[Ahhh... nevermind. I got it wrong. I was wondering how you got a negative average but didn't read enough of how you were working it. A thing to think about is number of ratings. For example, The Machinist has 8 good and no others, while The Longest Yard has 1 good and no others. I don't think you'd find anyone who thinks The Longest Yard >>> The Machinist but they both have the same overall rating. Maybe add in: If total > zero * .good or if total < zero * .bad. You'd end up with something like: Machinist: 1 * .8 = .8Longest Yard: 1 * .1 = .1I Heart Huckabees: -.60 * .3 = -.18Ocean's 12: -.63 * .5 = -.32Shows that both are better than average but that it takes in to account number of reviews. Note: I've been drinking and its late so this may not make as much sense as I think it does.
Eventually I'll get it to where you can sort by most positive reviews, etc. Me thinks it will take a few months to get the whole process completed.I trudge along the lonely road.
Wait, he's got onto something there, same thing was bothering me. How about an additive process instead of an average, i.e. each good review gets +1 each bad -1 like you have, but if 8 people give positive reviews and one gives negative it's just 8-1.

I'll add an absolute value column. I want to keep the average in so if people sort it by average, they may pick up on an obscure title.

You brave sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

Oh and After the Wedding.

Danish film, very good if you like foreign films.

I looooooove this movie.Corporation, I'll be happy to help with your spreadsheet, but I just can't commit to when. When I have spare time, I'll just start at a page far beyond where you are so that there won't be overlap.

Thanks! I'll keep updating how far along I've made it. I'm about to knock out page 5.

Page 5 (Post 250) is done. Link

Also added the absolute value column. Will work on publishing it as a spreadsheet that can sort instead of a static webpage. ETA: Link to sortable . Let me know if this works, new to google spreadsheets. Shouldn't be able to edit it, just sort it :goodposting:

Also, for those inclined to help, please post in the thread if you are working on a page (assuming most people use the 50 post per page view). That way we won't have duplications. If someone randomly picks page 200 to work on, there's a fair chance I won't remember it by the time I (or someone else) get to that page.

FYI, depending on how many movies are on a page, it takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes to get through a page.

Enjoy, and additional feedback is welcome.

I watched "Raising Arizona" last night... and I've gotta say, I was a little disappointed. The movie had its moments (mainly every time John Goodman screamed like a maniac), but overall, I just didn't think it was all that great. :lmao:

After back-to-back letdowns by the formerly invincible brothers Coen, I think I'm going to take a bit of a break and check out "3:10 to Yuma" next.

That one, along with Lebowski, are two of the biggest "I liked it much more the 2nd time" movies of all time.

Honestly? I can't really imagine sitting through that movie a second time.Lebowski had me in stitches the first time I saw it.

I guess that's why they call it a "way homer". Cause you only get it on the way home.

Say that reminds me, how'd you get that kid so darn fast? Me and Dot went in to adopt on account a' somethin' went wrong with my semen, and they said we had to wait five years for a healthy white baby. I said, "Healthy white baby? Five years? What else you got?" Said they got two Koreans and a negra born with his heart on the outside. It's a crazy world.

Raising Arizona: Watched it last night because of all the love it got in this thread... I wasn't very impressed. Decent movie overall and I probably would have liked it more had I watched it in '87 when it came out but it just doesn't stand up over time IMO. John Goodman was annoying as hell with that screaming... worst part of the movie. 2.5/5

Best part of the movie by far:

That could very well be it... maybe it just doesn't hold up over time.I actually thought Goodman's screaming was the best part of the movie... it made me sort of recall Walter Sobchak.

I just found the screaming way to long. I didn't find it funny and they held it way to long. If they cut it in half it probably wouldn't have bothered me but I was getting ready to fast forward through it the 2nd time.

The Hudsucker Proxy was pretty terrible, IMO. First Coen brothers movie that I haven't enjoyed. I wanted to quit about 20 minutes into it, but stuck it out only because the Coens were involved. I should have just gone with my instinct. I definitely would not recommend this one.Now that it's been established that the Coen brothers are, in fact, capable of making a bad movie, I'm a little apprehensive about watching O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Ladykillers... neither particularly appeal to me, but I became interested only because they are Coen brothers movies. Guess we'll see.
Hudsucker is weird, but I liked it. O Brother has great music if you appreciate Bluegrass. Still, it's very oddball. I liked Ladykillers a lot - though I am in the minority. I laughed several times watching Ladykillers.
Couldn't stand O Brother Where Art Thou. Don't understand why anyone has love for it. That said, I would much rather watch it again than suffer through Raising Arizona.Loved Miller's Crossing, great flick.

the only problem i had with "o brother" was the klan "musical" scene. the coen bros sometimes have a weird, jokey sense of humor that permeates a number of their films.

Obviously some of their material I don't get at all, but I'd rather see filmmakers take risks that fail then not take risks at all.

Tru dat. It's why so many of their movies are great, because they take risks.

I think no one does quirky better than the Coens. I wouldn't want quirky with every movie, but their films have a silliness in them that is one of a kind. In some ways, O' Brother reminds me of The Tandoori Express. Both movies do not feature a big, twisty plot. They rely on atmosphere more than anything else. I like movies like that for a change of pace.

Has anyone ever seen Lawrence of Arabia?
sure. it's a good period piece.
I think it's overrated, but definitely a must-see.
Well, be straight with me here... it this an enjoyable movie, or just a movie that should be seen because it's considered a classic?Ordinarily, I'd just dive right in, but I think it's like a 3+ hour commitment...I'm also planning to watch The Seventh Seal in the very near future. That movie looks pretty cool.

I saw Ghost Town this past weekend.

Rather, I saw part of it.

Heading into this, I thought Ricky Gervais was very funny, Tea Leoni was still hot, and I thought Greg Kinnear was incredibly likeable.

I also thought this comic twist on Sixth Sense might be funny, but I turned this movie off maybe 2/3rds into it.

And I almost NEVER quit watching a movie.

Just really bored.

hmm. it is a classic. i would put it in the same family of hollywood films of that era as "great escape", "river kwai", and the like. if you find those kinds of films accessible then you shouldn't have a problem with it.

If you like classic film, I think you'll like Arabia.

That's exactly my take on the movie.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Much like Superbad and Knocked Up, this is an uneven movie. But I laughed several times, so that's enough to make me recommend the movie.

I didn't think it was as good as either of the other two movies you mentioned. And I didn't think they were all that great either. Is the common thread here Apatow? Seems like his films have been going downhill.

I agree that they are all flawed. But he does work some belly-laughs into his movies.

Two:

The Hangover

One of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. Highly recommended.

Notes on a Scandal

Interesting drama with Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench. Not great, but well made.

I picked up a box of movies at a yard sale on the way to the cottage. The ones we have at the cottage now, I'm getting tired of rewatching.

In the box was a couple of gems I hadn't heard of.

Phoenix with Ray Liotta, Anthony LaPaglia, Jeremy Niven and one of the younger Baldwin brothers I really liked. It was a good cop/bad cop kind of movie without any real "good" cops.

A Wedding for Bella with Scott Baio was another I hadn't heard of. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It will probably be branded a chick flick and it wasn't incredibly deep or anything but the acting, particularly by the older mentally handicapped brother was fantastic. He alone made me cry. Not blockbuster material but I'd recommend renting it.

Mr and Mrs Smith was pretty much what I expected, lots of action. Jolie is damn good at action movies. Good movie.

Put me squarely in the overrated camp on Lawrence of Arabia, though the scenery is beautiful and O'Toole is great. I just couldn't get into that movie, though. The Seventh Seal, on the other hand, is AWESOME.

Thanks... definitely looking forward to Seventh Seal. :goodposting:

Best female action star of all time? Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone else who can compete with her.
I'd agree, for sure. The only others I can even think of being worth watching are probably Linda Hamilton, Uma Thurman, Rhona Mitra...thats about it. And that Asian chick who did her own stunts in Crouching Tiger.

Watching Three Burials of Melqiuades Estrada. Pretty decent. It's right in my wheelhouse. I love decent dramas set in rural Texas border (see Lone Star, Lonesome Dove, Last Picture Show, Hud, etc.). January Jones also looking eminently ####able.

Watchmen: Pretty freaking good. I have never read the book or comics so I was going in blind and was pleasantly surprised. Probably the best comic/superhero movie besides The Dark Knight. I didn't even notice that it was almost 3 hours long. 4.5/5

The Devils Tomb: Horrible. Fell asleep twice watching it. Cuba Gooding Jr. leading soldiers into a tomb in Afghanistan. This movie comes complete with cheesy flashbacks and bad acting. Avoid at all costs. .001/5

Fanboys: 4 Star Wars fanatics set out to steal a copy of Episode 1 from Lucas' house before it is released because one of them has terminal cancer and won't be alive for the release. One of the better comdies I've seen lately... if you know your Star Wars and Star Trek. Lots of hilarious references and some great cameos by people like Shatner, Seth Rogan, Carrie Fisher, Jay and Silent Bob, Will Forte and Billy Dee Williams. Oh and Kristen Bell dressed up as Leia  . 4/5
Shocked this isn't getting more love. I thought this movie was great and I don't remember the last time I laughed so much while watching one.
