Watched a couple of old ones today... Lifeboat and The Most Dangerous Game. I would not recommend either.
If you're serious about delving into older films, I'd recommend these:Night of the Hunter

The Bad Seed

The Thin Man

The Glass Key

Lolita (Kubrick version)

The Big Sleep

Fail Safe

The Bicycle Thief

The International: Not bad. Not great, but not bad. Kind of a thriller w/o much depth.
Agreed. Entertaining overall and Clive Owen is money, but you're right...it was missing something. But man, that shootout scene at the Guggenheim was pretty friggin' awesome.
Anytime I am watching a movie with Owen, I can't get Shoot Em Up out of my mind, and that is not a good thing. I mean, that shootout at the Guggenheim would have been better if he had a baby in his arms, right?

watched "the year of living dangerously" last night. great roles for young, attractive actors mel gibson and sigourney weaver in jakarta. directed by the sure-handed and capable peter weir of "truman show", "gallipoli", "fearless", and "picnic at hanging rock" fame. film puts gibson and weaver romantically together in the political upheaval of 1960's indonesia. it's a good, kind of sexy film. sigourney maybe never looked any better than she does in this film. some curious casting - character actor linda hunt, first and foremost - kind of takes you out of the film slightly but that's a minor complaint. weir is such an under-rated director based on his body of work. lots of directors could get lost in a story like this - post colonial politics, romantic - but weir keeps it all together. it's not message heavy like "the killing fields" nor an exotic trifle like "indochine" but kind of reminiscent of a graham greene in tenor.
Let me introduce you to Sigourney in Galaxy Quest
You're both forgetting Working Girl.
There's Galaxy's Quest, Zuul from Ghostbusters, and then everything else pales in comparison

Loved the Guggenheim shootout! The movie was decent overall. Why isn't Shallow Grave available on Netflix?

Had a little guilty pleasure arrive from netflix yesterday that I haven't seen in at least 10 years.

Over the Top

One of the best of 80s Stallone cheese. Best arm wrestling movie ever! I actually really appreciate the fact that arm wrestling matches are at least fairly realistic (at least to the stuff I've seen in bars and on ESPN2) and they didn't overdo it with the dramatics. Its a PG movie, so I can't wait to enjoy it with my son again in a few years. Cameo by wrestler Terry Funk is pretty cool too, as well as some Kenny Loggins on the soundtrack.

Few of the classic lines:

I drive truck, break arms, and arm wrestle. It's what I love to do, it's what I do best.

Mr. Hawk, you're going to die from cholesterol poisoning.

I can't rate this movie and do it justice. It is by no means a "good" movie, but it's great to watch. Best part about it is that the DVD starts over again immediately after its finished. I put it in when I got home and just left it on all night, I probably watched it 3 times.

When I turn my hat backwards, it's like a switch, I feel like a machine

I love Clint Eastwood and Gran Torino did nothing to temper that love for him. Sure the rest of the cast couldn't act their way out of a paper bag but it was vintage Clint. Sadly old man vintage Clint though. I'm gonna be bummed when he dies.

Ya notice he didn't say the N word in his joke at the bar?

not what i expected but loved it  . Eastwood made it good.

Yesterday was Hong Kong gangster flick day for me--watched Election and Triad Election by Johnnie To. In my opinion, not nearly as polished and accomplished as Sparrow, but very enjoyable nonetheless. Top-notch acting, and Election in particular had some awesome twists at the end. Not really "action" movies so much as mafia/honor movies with a lot of suspense. Really fun movies. 4/5

The Foot Fist Way

Funny. Any fans of HBO's Eastbound and Down should watch this. Same actor with largely the same kind of character. Very funny indy comedy.

Mean Streets

Don't bother.
I'm a big Scorsese fan, but that movie hasn't aged well. I'm sure it was an important film when it came out, but I won't be watching it again.
Yeah, I'm sure part of my disappointment was in expecting great things from a Scorsese/DeNiro film (not to mention Harvey Keitel). I found the movie to be more annoying than anything.

Guilty by Suspicion - little-known DeNiro flick about the Hollywood blacklisting of 40s/50s. Watchable but about it.

Hotel for Dogs - starts out kinda cute and quickly fades. Kids might like anyway but don't get it for yourselves, even if you love dogs.

Pope of Greenwich Village

A while back, I ripped on Eric Roberts for his selection as a cameo in Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. I take back every bad word I had to say. I also sometimes need to be reminded of how charismatic 80's Mickey Rourke used to be. The story was muddled, but the movie really is all about character interaction between Rourke and Roberts. Charlie......Charlie........... Its like a wiseguy's Rain Man.

3.5/5

Push

I generally like sci-fi, but this was pretty bad. I couldn't keep up with at all. Couple of cool action scenes like the fish market fight in the beginning, and the Asian Banshees were really cool, but thats about it.

watched two on cable this weekend.

Eagle Eye watched, or rather was on the television as I was doing a few other things. Overall, not the worst movie, just nothing memorable enough to even include in a writeup. Score it a 1.0/5.0

Pineapple Express

I am not sure what to say about this one. Was it supposed to be funny? I mean, was there was thing that was genuinely funny about this movie? I chuckled at the part where Seth Rogen was trying to piece his ear back together, but that's just because I'm morbid I guess. And Ed Begley Jr ranting and cussing was mildly amusing as it's pretty out of character, but the rest of it was pretty much a mess. Either that, or I simply do not have a sense of humor any longer, I don't know. I kind of enjoy Seth Rogen, but to me, he's not funny enough to carry a movie on his own, he's great in short blasts, but he's like a 15 minute comedy routine stretched into 90 minutes. I'll score it a 1.5/5.0.

Ong Bak 2: Tony Jaa >>> Jackie Chan or Jet Li. Not much of a movie but the action and scenery/sets were phenomenal. Not sure why they have it as 'Ong Bak 2'. It has absolutely nothing to do with the first movie. First movie was set in the current day, the second was set waaay back when (can't remember for sure but around 1400 I'd guess). For the fights scenes, 5/5. As an entire movie, 2.5/5.

watched "this is england" the other night on IFC. tale of a young boy caught up in the skinhead and white supremacist movement in england during the nationalist fervor of the falklands war. a little cloying and simplistic but i still enjoyed it.

Someone was watching StartZ with me this weekend :) Thought the same about Eagle Eye.

I freaking loved Pineapple Express

Can anyone weigh in on Apollo 13, Philadelphia, Road to Perdition, or The Terminal?

That Tom Hanks thread made me realize that I missed a lot of his more acclaimed films. TIA.

Apollo 13 is pretty good. I don't like Ron Howard much, but this is an entertaining movie.Philadelphia is pretty forgettable. There are memorable and emotional scenes, but I don't recommend it.Road to Perdition is great-looking, and there are some fans of the movie at FBG. But I think it's flawed.I couldn't even finish The Terminal. It's not bad, but Tom Hanks is far too big of a movie star to be playing a poor Russian character with a thick accent. I couldn't suspend my disbelief.

Philadelphia- Not exactly a very uplifting story but Hanks and Washington play well off each other. Solid, but more appropriate for a 300 level Human Resources class than a night at the movies.Apollo 13- Very well made movie about a great story. One of the classics from the 90s if not anything else.Road to Perdition- Love it, love Sam Mendes. Daniel Craig is great as the bratty son of Paul Newman. More about the relationship between father and son then a mob movie. Might be a little long as Mendes really doesn't work with the tightest screenplays.Terminal- I'm sure you'll find very polarizing viewpoints here. Put me in the love it camp, but its light, cliched, and touching. A simple story about a simple man, you don't have to put much work in to enjoy it.Hanks was pretty good about choosing screenplays from the early 90s on, you're not going to find him in too many duds, I've always enjoyed his work and progression from his earlier slapstick fare, not that I don't still probably enjoy that the most.

Dissappointed in The Illusionist. Very slow, some cheesy effects and a predictable ending. I expected better from such a great cast but even the acting was stale. I put this off after seeing The Prestige when it came out and that was a much better movie.

The Interview (2007) -- Steve Buscemi, Sienna Miller

Good enough acting job on each of their parts, but found the dialogue and interaction tough to buy into. 2/5

I loved Road to Perdition. Definitely an extremely underrated film.

Apollo 13 - Excellent film. Exciting, good cast, emotional finish.Philadelphia - Well acted, but somewht depressingThe Terminal - oddball subject, likeable, humorousRoad To Perdition - best of this bunch, excellent cast (first thing I've deen Daniel Craig in), great story, oscar worthy

First it seemed like it might be good, then it sucked, then it got really terrible.

I didn't care for Push, but this was worse.

I think you're being generous. In general, Nick Cage is ok, if in the right role. But for all that is good and holy, AVOID THIS MOVIE! It's just beyond bad. 0/5 *Avoid, avoid, avoid.

He's Just Not that into you - Really cute, even though you see it all coming. I'm such a sucker for these type flicks. I can't help it. Notting Hill, Love Actually, etc.

Plus Scarlett Johansen is stunning in this flick...but you know that already. Definitely worth a rental. 3.5/5

By the end of it, I just couldn't believe what I was actually watching on screen. How the story came from burying the time capsule to the say it ended in an hour and a half is completely beyond me? I've seen more plausible endings at 3:30 AM on the sci-fi network.I really wanted to like this, especially after seeing Ebert's 4 star review, and enjoying the director's earlier works The Crow and Dark City.

Ebert is completely off his rocker.

watched "no end in sight" last night. this felt a lot like a Frontline doc about the mishandling of Iraq by the Bush administration. it was really good regardless. it does not paint a pretty picture of the Bush inner circle, especially Rummy and Cheney.

I watched Notorious last night (Hitchcock, not B.I.G.). It was entertaining all the way through, but I'm sort of left wondering what the point was... it was sort of predictable and things ended up sorting themselves out just fine in the end. Kind of unusual for a Hitchcock film. Mildly disappointing.

Have you gotten into any Kurosawa yet?
