I watched Slumdog Millionaire last night. An entertaining and dramatic movie. It was predictable, but to its credit, it didn't really pretend not to be. It was a little unrealistic how Jamal's older brother grew up to be so ugly. Also, it was really silly when they all danced in the train station during the credits, but that's sort of irrelevant to the movie itself. Anyway, these are minor and irrelevant gripes, and I would recommend this to anyone who hasn't seen it. The prototype of a "feel-good" movie, complete with "guy meets girl, guy loses girl, guy gets girl" and "rags-to-riches."
The wife and I are fairly sick of torture in film. Is there a lot in this one?
nah, this is danny boyle after all. it reads more like charles dickens than eli roth.
Thanks. The wife is really down on torture as a device, so it's nice to see that's not a big deal here.
<_< Adebisi describes it as a "prototype of a feel-good movie" and your only question is not only is there torture in the film, but is there "a lot" of torture in the film?

That's ###### up man.

I've wasted about 3 or 4 hours of my life over the past week or so watching The Last Don and The Last Don II. They were pretty terrible. I'm a sucker for mafia movies, so I just had to see them through, but wow... these were terrible. The first movie started out okay, but it was a slow but steady decline until the ending of the second one. Definitely not recommended.
If you're interested in a light mob comedy, David Mamet's "Things Change" with Don Ameche and Joe Mantegna was entertaining.
If you're going mob comedy, nothing beats "My Blue Heaven".

Watched Tropic Thunder for probably the 4th time last night.

mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

The part with the head after the director explodes KILLS ME everytime

Watched The Count of Monte Cristo last night (the most recent version). Really enjoyed it; I had previously not been familiar with the story. I think I may go out and buy the book now. I understand there are numerous and significant differences between the film and the book.

if you can stand foreign films, i highly recommend this version. as a miniseries, it didn't have to adhere to the constraints of a movie theater audience. it's really good.as long as i am recommending euro-tv films, let me offer up lars von trier's "the kingdom". it's kind of spooky, weird fun.

I don't mean this to be a knock on you for liking the movie - I reckon if I saw the movie first I may think differently about it. But I read the book first and loved that. I was excited to see the movie when it came out. And then I absolutely, positively hated that movie. With a passion.I hope you enjoy the book.

 I completely understand that. In fact, there were several points during the movie when I thought about how much better the book probably was.

Then I read the Wiki page on the movie, which says that there are some major differences between the book and the movie (characters' relationships with one another, some characters omitted entirely, different ending, etc.), and I assumed that anyone who had read the book must have absolutely hated that movie.

Intolerable Cruelty was a pretty mediocre movie. Almost seemed like a parody of Coen brothers movie to me rather than an actual Coen brothers movie. Extremely predictable. But wow, Catherine Zeta-Jones sure looked hot.

Broke from the classics to watch Adventureland tonight.

What a buzz-kill this movie was. Don't buy into the marketing that it is like Superbad. This movie is a slow paced, depressing, coming of age teen romance. I think I chuckled once or twice. Stay far away if you are in the mood for a good comedy (like it's being marketed as).

 I thought it was funnier than a lot of the other comedies out lately (Pineapple Express, I Love You Man, Step Brothers). Definitely not as funny as Superbad was, but it was a better movie.

Dance Flick: oof. As horribly bad as expected. Not sure why I let the girlfriend still pick movies. Two or three laughs throughout the whole thing. 0/5

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. I loved Pineapple Express. I think the scene with the boss and the baseball bat was the only thing I laughed at. Really disappointed in this.

Coraline - the more I think about this movie... the more I want to see it again... and I rarely watch movies more then once. I can't say I loved it... but I guess it has been getting better the more I think about it. It was very interesting... and I think there is a message in there I missed??? Even though this isn't necessarily a stellar review... I highly recommend you check it out... very interesting.

The Shaggy Dog - I saw the edition with Tim Allen... I saw the original when I was a kid... but this was the first time I ever saw this version. It was really good... seriously... I likeed it a lot. I enjoy very immature humor though... so...

Miss March - a surprisingly funny movie. If you like 'The Whitest Kids You Know' I am pretty sure you will like this. I am not that familiar with The Whitest Kids You Know... and their humor is kind of odd... but I did like it. It wasn't a movie that was entertaining from the word go... but it consistently has it's laugh out loud moments.

I am about to watch Fast and Furious... will report back... if I remember...

Nighthawks

Sylvester Stallone and Billy Dee Williams vs International Terrorist Rutger Hauer. Fun, but terribly predictable and done better many times after its release.

3/5
That was Rutger Hauer playing the pre-plastic surgery Wolfgar as well. I would have sworn they used two different actors.

I was too young for the serious Kramer vs. Kramer when it came out, but caught it recently. Excellent movie. Dustin Hoffman is awesome as the workaholic, neglectful father who suddenly has to become a single parent while fighting to stay relevant in the dog-eat-dog world of Manhattan advertising. The kid was stellar; I can't believe it's the same actor who played Molly Ringwald's annoying kid brother in '16 Candles'. Streep was great in her limited role as the ex who returns from therapy and decides she's ready to be a mother again, fighting for sole custody.

Tried it and shut it off about a 30 minutes in. Downloaded a ####ty copy which probably didn't help. I'll give it another shot in the future on rental but it doesn't look too promising.
I really didn't like this movie. It was probably a pretty good movie, but was just too cruel for me to enjoy.

That's one I always meant to watch. Putting it on the list. :)

Oh, it's not an enjoyable movie. It's got one of the most depraved, evil characters I've seen in a film, and yet he doesn't physically hurt anyone.

Just watched Fighter and Fast and Furious... both were very good.

Fighter was kind of like a modern day Rockey... I thought it was good...

I liked all the Fast and Furious movies... and this one was pretty much more of the same... if you like the others you will like this one...

I am also watching the first season of Weeds... very very good so far...

Fighting: Not bad. Kinda dragged a bit but overall worth a watch. Channing Tatum is actually decent in this. 7/10

Drag Me To Hell: Decent enough. Raimi uses some Evil Dead tricks here, its good to see he still enjoys the comedy/horror genre. Some pretty funny stuff here and there with decent makeup effects. 7/10

Road Trip 2: Beer Pong: Mindless comedy, lots of boob shots and hotties. Why do these movies always have a dorky, cliche middle eastern guy? 6/10

LOL, my wife and I generally agree on movies. But she absolutely despised this movie....I thought it was fantastic. What it came down to.....she really didn't believe that most men are such pigs. I tried to explain that, in my experience, that movie sums up the mentality of 90% of men....she still doesn't believe it.

Top-50 movie of all time. Saw it years ago and thought it was great - but it took on a whole new meaning post-kids.

I agree man... this movie was pretty good. Ever since growing up on fight movies like Bruce Lee and Rocky and Eastwood movies like Every Wich Way but Loose... I always like a good fight movie and this one was pretty good. I am definitely more a fan of NON special effects fighting (as in... didn't like the Matrix and fights like that)... and the fights in this movie didn't have any special effects... I always prefer that.

Just finished watching it. While I will agree that it was marketed wrong, I really liked it for what it was. Not a gutbuster of a comedy, but there were plenty of scenes that elicited a smile. What it lacked in outright laughter, it made up for with better than average writing and direction, IMO. Solid 4 star film that might make it to 4 1/2 after a repeat viewing.

First season of Weeds was awesome... they have all the way up to 4 seasons... I think I'm going to keep going with this one...
It's really too bad that it peaked during season 2. It used to be one of my favorite shows, now it is just a characture of its former self, it really has nothing even to do with weed anymore besides side plots. I haven't even bothered watching the last 3 episodes heading toward the Season 5 finale, and that is after not missing an episode the first four seasons.

Definitely not a comedy. I put it in late at night last week and turned it off after about 20 minutes I thought it was so bad. I tried again a few days later and could appreciate it as a "Say Anything" type of movie. Ryan Reynolds was completely unnecessary and gave off a really weird vibe. Kristen Stewart was good and the neurotic lead grew on me, it was kind of nice to see someone besides Michael Cera play that type of role.3.5/5

Finally took my wife to see Harry Potter 6. I have enjoyed all the others, and this one was no different. Darker than the others, more "grown up" I guess. My 5 year old will not be watching this one for a while.

The only different observation about this one over the others is that each of the first 5 felt like they tried at least a little to be singular movies, you could watch any of them without seeing the others and catch up pretty quickly. This one did not. From the opening scene which is right out of the climax of 5 to the Empire Strikes Back like ending where they are prepared for a great battle/quest/job, this movie felt more like a bridge that cannot stand on its own.

Fanboys

Really dumb comedy about Star Wars nerds breaking into Lucasfilm to see Episode I before its release in 1999. Not a ton of laughs, but kind of earnest and fun to watch. Recommended to Star Wars junkies.

Top 5 comedy this year.
I'm a Star Wars dork, and I liked this movie a lot.
I definitely wouldn't classify myself as a star wars dork or even a big fan. They were good movies just as LOTR were. As long as you've seen the movies, Fanboys is well worth the watch.

I enjoyed it. My only beef is the Jack Black wannabe who lived in his mom's garage. He was ok, but no one does Jack Black like Jack Black.

The guy from Balls of Fury? Dan Fogler?Tons of similarities: overweight, black hair, grungy, and with musical talent. (Fogler has a band as well and has been on Broadway)

but I think Black's shtick is tired and find Fogler pretty funny. I can't believe I actually laughed a few times watching Balls of Fury.

I can see how his act would wear thin with people. Hasn't affected me, though.

Have you seen Black's cameo in Run Ronnie Run? That's the funniest thing I've seen him do in a long time. I enjoy his bit parts, more than anything starring him.

Haven't seen it yet, though I am a fan of Mr. Show. I liked Black in School of Rock and High Fidelity.

Reynolds was definitely necessary. In other movies, he would be the obviously evil slimy ######## boyfriend. In this one, he still is the slimy ########, but he doesn't slap you in the face with it. It's more subtle, as he presents the cool older guy image through the entire film. He doesn't do the image-change when the girl isn't around and he doesn't try to humiliate the hero. But by the end of the film, it's obvious he's just a pathetic loser who can only get the attention of younger crowd because noone his age would put up with his crap.
