i used to be a big fan of von trier but let him go after the dogma thing took off. "dogville" and the dogma ethos sounds better as theatre, i think.

Hush: Fairly good english Thriller. A couple is driving down the highway when the guy catches a glimpse of what he thought was a naked lady tied up in the back of a truck. He calls the cops and keeps following the vehicle. A few twists and some nice suspense make it one of the better thrillers I've seen lately. Nothing too original but one of the better in the genre. 3.5/5
Jesus Camp: Maybe the scariest, most disgusting documentary I have ever seen. How these people are allowed to get away with that kind of mental abuse on children is just shocking. These poor kids have zero chance at leading a regular life. This film just furthered my belief that the vast majority of Christians (or any other religion) are simply brainwashed kids who can't think for themselves and by the time they're old enough to form their own opinions, its too late. Just sickening. 4/5

other 2 films i saw of his were dogville and breaking the waves and thought both were excellent...he dedicated Antichrist to Tarkovsky...i can see why as the photography reminds me of Stalker...

i was all over "zentropa" and "element of crime". they were triumphs of style over substance but whatever. he really his stride with "the kingdom" series, which were funny, warm and weird. "dancer..." and "breaking..." were powerful, original films. '

I own this movie. I think this is probably the eighth time I've watched it. I know I am in the minority here, but I think this is nearly a perfect movie. You have two fantastic leads here in Forester and Grier. You have a great Elmore Leonard story. And throw in fantastic supporting roles by Jackson and DeNiro. I love this movie, and I think it's a peek into what could possibly be Tarantino's works 10 or 15 years from now. Brilliant.

I dont know if QT will ever be able to top it, IMO. 2 actors that dont get enough love in this flick are Eric Stoltz and Rosanna Arquette. Every scene they're in is pure gold, especially the whole adrenaline shot scene that starts with the phone call from Travolta in the car.

Definitely my favorite QT movie and IMO his best. Not the thrill ride Reservoir Dogs is and doesnt really have that "blow you away" factor of Pulp Fiction that left you in awe after the first viewing, but Jackie Brown doesnt have a weakness.

Absolutely. I look at Jackie Brown like I do at Casino. Just because Goodfellas is great and Casino is in the same genre does not mean Casino is bad as a result. If another director like Coppola made Casino, I think we'd all be ranking it in the top five all time great mob movies.

The Bank Job - finally got around to seeing this, and liked it a lot. Ending is a little bit of a reach, but its based on a true story and the rest is believable and entertaining. I dont remember Saffron Burrows being so hot. Statham was good, I like him best in roles like this when he plays a character of questionable morals. Not that its supposed to have any connection with it, but I liked this a ton more than The Italian Job. 7.9/10
Lars and the Real Girl - really liked this one. Kind of an offbeat, dramatic comedy. Ryan Gosling plays a quiet guy who keeps to himself, until he starts dating a life size doll named Bianca. Plenty of humorous parts come with it, and surprisingly his brother, wife, and the entire town embrace the situation and go along with it. Original and witty screenwriting, Emily Mortimer was good, Gosling was excellent. Not for everybody, but I think most here would like it. 8.2/10
IMO Gosling is the best young(er) actor going - Half Nelson, The United States of Leland, The Believer, Fracture, Stay, and Remember The Titans is a pretty good resume for someone under 30. Particularly his standout performances in the first 3 I listed. United States of Leland is excellent if youve never seen it.
Pride and Glory - solid cop drama. Id say We Own The Night was my favorite cop movie from 2007, and this takes that honor for 2008 from what I can recall. Thought it would be good, but better than I expected. No real twists per se, but the story moves along in interesting fashion. It has an old school feel to it, and its strength is in the acting, namely of Edward Norton's family - Jon Voight, Colin Farrell, and especially Noah Emmerich. Maybe Norton's best performance since The Score, mostly thanks to the subtleties of his character that he hits right on the head. 6.8/10
The Hurricane - first time Ive seen this since around when it just came out on DVD. Even better than I remember. I think I might even like it more than the more recent very good biopics Walk the Line and Ray. Denzel kills. If it wasnt for Spacey's fantastic turn in American Beauty, I think Denzel wins best actor of 1999. 8.5/10
The International - surprisingly decent. Clive Owen tries infiltrate a bank that provides cheap firearms to nations in conflict by trying to get employees to turn on the organization. There's a pretty cool shootout scene at the Guggenheim, but that might be the highlight. Not much else to say, just a good, dramatic thriller - although not the most believable. Armin Mueller Stahl was very good in a supporting part. 6.3/10
Watchmen - okay. the special effects were some of the best ive ever seen, but that was pretty much all it offered that impressed me outside of the overall cinematography. I never read the comic, but the flashbacks and jumping around of the storyline actually detracted from the movie building into something IMO (and I love me some flashbacks), and just made it seem disjointed. Just when you thought it was going somewhere, theyd flashback or something and once its done you feel like youre back at point one. the acting wasnt anything special for the most part, and I found the characters outside of Rorschach and the Comedian to be pretty uninteresting. the villain was barely developed, and the little that he/she was happened very late in the movie. the ending is anticlimatic, at best. Not so bad I wanted to turn it off or anything, but I wont try to watch it again. It starts off very good, but after the first 20 minutes or so, its all downhill. 5.5/10
In Bruges - despite going in with high expectations, it even surpassed them and I thought it was fantastic. Colin Farrell was great. Ive always thought he was a pretty good actor who chose some bad roles, so I wouldnt say I was surprised by how good he was, but he stole a lot of scenes. I thought the way Fiennes did his character he kind of stole from Kingsley a la Sexy Beast, but that didnt bother me. The conversations in the hotel room when theyre all coked up and at the table outdoors when Fiennes sits down with Gleeson were priceless. I really enjoyed the recurring "fairy tale/dream" references to the city and the movie almost is like an adult fairy tale in a sense and I thought it came full circle perfectly from Gleeson getting back to the top of the tower with the fog thru the end of the movie. Probably my favorite movie from 2008. 9/10

Meh. Watchable but no new ground covered here. The "twists" at the end were pretty mundane. Decent, but when the best performance from an ensemble cast is Affleck, you may be in trouble.

Decent little indy film. Thought it had a lot of the same vibes as Little Miss Sunshine, I would have even guessed it was made by the same director, but it wasn't. Arkin shines in a supporting role. Great performance by Amy Adams, but the story was really missing an antagonist.

Over-stylized dreck with characters that were beyond easy to dislike, contributing to it being so bad that I didnt turn it off just so I could see how it ended, which was so bad I laughed. Billy Bob Thornton was totally miscast, Winona Ryder just seemed out of place, and I kept asking myself why the rockstar was even part of the movie.
The only even half decent part of the movie was 3 performances. Kim Basinger was good, if not over the top, as a pill addicted divorcee who seemed to wish she was 30 years younger. Chris Isaak was surprisingly good as a rich, alcoholic, womanizing father (well, maybe not surprising
).
Brad Renfro stole the show though in no more than 10-15 minutes of screentime. I thought he was good in a movie a few years ago 10th & Wolf, but this was easily the best performance of his career. I think he couldve been around for a long time as a very good supporting actor had he not died.

If you're in the mood for a low budget tounge-in-cheek mockumentary, you should be pleasantly surprised here. Be warned that its all done with digital handheld and looks like it cost about $100 to make. It's about the comeback of a pro paintballer after being banned for 10 years after a "wiping" incident. The incident is re-enacted with He-man action figures at the beginning of the film, awesome. Fans of Human Giant or Wes Anderson type humor should also check it out. Jack McBrayer and Rob Riggle (Cop from Hangover) cracked me up every second they were on the screen.

I just finished Der Untergang or the Downfall. I had read many reviews that bashed the movie so I never watched it but figured I'd give it a shot this weekend. There may be some historical leniency but I can't imagine it went down much differently than depicted.
There aren't many "historical" depictions that I really buy into but this one grabbed me for some reason.

Definitely not a comedy. I put it in late at night last week and turned it off after about 20 minutes I thought it was so bad. I tried again a few days later and could appreciate it as a "Say Anything" type of movie. Ryan Reynolds was completely unnecessary and gave off a really weird vibe. Kristen Stewart was good and the neurotic lead grew on me, it was kind of nice to see someone besides Michael Cera play that type of role.Just finished watching it. While I will agree that it was marketed wrong, I really liked it for what it was. Not a gutbuster of a comedy, but there were plenty of scenes that elicited a smile. What it lacked in outright laughter, it made up for with better than average writing and direction, IMO. Solid 4 star film that might make it to 4 1/2 after a repeat viewing.We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. I loved Pineapple Express. I think the scene with the boss and the baseball bat was the only thing I laughed at. Really disappointed in this.I thought it was funnier than a lot of the other comedies out lately (Pineapple Express, I Love You Man, Step Brothers). Definitely not as funny as Superbad was, but it was a better movie.

Watched Tyson last night. After reading that it was him talking for the whole movie, I wasn't expecting much. I was interested throughout the whole movie, and would recommend it. I like watching boxing now, but the rise of Tyson happened when I was in HS, so I didn't follow him much or get to see any of his fights from his "glory" years. Even though there wasn't much boxing in it, I was sitting with my mouth open at some of the KOs - dude destroyed people. I think I'll be added some fight footage to the netflix queue now. Also agree with you that the guy is still off and has anger issues. Still interesting to hear from the celebrities point of view when all you have access to is the media's version.

Totally agree, the ending made me want to bang my head against the TVLove Election. Dont know if I'd call it underrated, but I think its great. Broderick and Witherspoon and both excellent.
Dont think I'll ever be bored enough that I'll force myself to watch Leatherheads.

Watched Cool Hand Luke for only the 2nd time today.
It was on the HDMovie Channel. After it was over, I immediately started it over and watched it again.
no homo - but there's something about Paul Newman in a movie that almost captivates me in a hetero way. His acting is just so believable and and he absolute captures your attention from start to finish.
I would put this in my top 10 movies of all time after 3 total viewings.

Rudo & Cursi - Mexican film (subtitled). A really good movie that takes its time and let's you really get to know the characters. Presents many moral dimemmas and does not short-change on the resolutions and provoked a lot of thought. Seriously good. 4+/5 stars
Italian Job - bought the HD-version on ebay. COuldn't remember it, but the cast made me think it had to be pretty good. Despite a wicked good start, it ends up floundering and ends sloppily. If they could have made the last hour as good mas the first half hour, it'd be 4 stars, but as made, I only give it 2/5

Agree. Bank Job was much better.Bank Job Trivia- Director Donalson said one of the most difficult days of filming was when he filmed the brothel scene. The scene called for the women to be walking around wearing only garters. However, Donaldson said that when he went to film the scene he discovered that most of the women shaved their genitals, which would have been anachronistic for 1971. So the actresses had to wear pubic wigs called "merkins." This caused a problem because the merkins were hard to secure in place and kept slipping, causing Donaldson much aggravation.
