I was in the mood for a good horror flick and had heard some positive reviews of "Drag Me to Hell" so I gave it a shot.

Oof. I turned it off about halfway through and immediately deleted it from my hard drive just in case I ever got curious about the second half. Homer-6-Months-From-Now owes Present-Day-Homer a serious debt of gratitude.

wife and I both enjoyed it a lot
I enjoyed this quite a bit as well, definitely surprised me. I'd give it about a 3.5/5 as I felt the leads were better people then I could ever hope to be and that was kind of depressing. Two attractive, intelligent, witty people in love with no vices and they don't fight or feel at all insecure at any point? Yeah right. All the over the top side characters were great, now those were people I could relate with. It's really too bad John Krasinski has zero range as an actor and can only play different volumes of Jim Halpert, because he is a really appealing actor.

State of Play

This is the British miniseries that the Russell Crowe film is based on. Just started watching it this week, and it's fantastic.
Just finished disc 1 of 2. Holy balls this is great.
Yes, it certainly is. Glad you're watching that instead of the Crowe movie.
Oh, is it bad? I read some good reviews for that film.
I thought it was pretty bad. There's a review posted here somewhere from the last month or so.

Darn it. Someone said something interesting about Ben Affleck in the Onion AV Club: they were discussing Affleck's excellent comic role in Mike Judge's Extract, and they said Affleck's better as a supporting actor than he is as a leading man.

No chance. The British series is brilliant.

just watched Next on TBS.

all i gotta say is that if i were Nic Cage's character, i would have been using that power to figure out what to say/do to pull a threesome with Jessica Biel and Julianne Moore's characters.

The Brothers Bloom: Meh... pretty boring. I'm think this was supposed to be a comedy but I'm not sure. It wasn't funny, it wasn't dramatic and there was very little excitement. Since it was a movie about con-artists, you know the big twists are coming and nothing is as it seems. 1.5/5
I really disagree here. I saw Bloom last night and while it had its flaws, it thought it was very clever and humorous. Not belly laugh comedy, but more sly and sardonnic. I have issues with both the males leads ( Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo) and sometimes I have a hard time watching them. But they really delivered here and we not a distraction to me. The star of the show was Rachel Weisz playing Penelope Stamp. Both the character and actress were memorable. I highly recommend this film for that alone, but overall, it really worked for me. 3.9/5 stars

I saw this in the theater when 500 Days of Summer was sold out. Despite my dislike of Maya Rudolf, I enjoyed it quite a bit. A little too indy/quirky at tiems and seemed contrived, but still solid.3.2stars/5

She was great. By far the best thing about this movie. I understand that it wasn't meant to be laugh out loud funny, but I don't think I had a smile on my face for much of it.

Two Lovers

Meh. Joaquin Phoenix was pretty good. But Gwyneth Paltrow? She's not some brilliant chameleon that can just become invisible playing a sad loser like this. Bad casting. This is a meandering, mostly pointless movie with an ending that is very weak. Thumbs down.

My wife and I were reasonably entertained with this film. I personally found it funny, quirky and different enough to keep my interest the whole way through. I would have no problems recommending it as a solid rental.

I just saw the American version this weekend. I haven't seen the British series so I don't have a frame of reference.I thought it was good. Entertaining with a couple good twists. But overall forgetful and certainly not brilliant.

Land of the Lost: Will Ferrell at his worst. I'm really not sure who the target audience was for this movie. It seemed very kiddish but there was also some foul language and adult jokes. Either way, it wasn't good... at all. 1/5

Im not sure if this or Year One looked like the worst comedy of the summer, but I dont think I'll ever be bored enough to watch either. And I was even in Land of the Lost. Thats how bad I expect it to be even with my alluring presence and aura.

Wrong. They both sucked equally. Horrible, no redeeming qualities. Although Land of the Lost had Kenny powers. That should have helped, but still didn't.

"Shrink"

Kevin Spacey plays a stoner Hollywood shrink to the stars who finds redemption by helping a minority student overcome the death of her mother. Cliched and tired, but Spacey still carried it on his shoulders to mild success. 2.75/5 stars

Absolutely loved this movie. Three leads are all dynamite and I can't say I'm much of a fan of any of them besides Ruffalo (Quietly became one of the best actors in the industry if you ask me). Brody was someone I couldn't stand when he began earning his accolades early in his career, but he has grown on me through the years. The twists and turns get to be a little much, but in the end they are probably justified. It's like a tighter, more elegant, version of a Wes Anderson film. Probably one of the best con movies I've seen in the last ten years, and I've seen most of them.4.5/5

Assassination of a High School President

Concept of "Brick" done crisper with much better actors. Film Noir in a high school setting with all the colorful characters one could expect. Bruce Willis's best role since I can't remember when? Wouldn't be surprised to see him nominated for Best Supporting Actor from this. Isn't as anticlimatic as noir films tend to be.

Loved the idea behind Brick. Need to add this pronto.Watched Fast and Furious over the weekend. I will confess that I enjoyed every movie in this series. Saying that, I think this was the best of them all. The opening car scene was by far the best and overall the movie was exactly what I wanted. Over the top car scenes, chessy car building montages and stellar acting from Vin Diesel and Paul Walker.

Maybe it's because I'm a huge movie snob, but the "straight to video"-ness of this one makes me very leery. Plus, I thought Brick was fine. Not great, but better than it gets credit for. I'll pass.

Don't get me wrong, I loved Brick. But this was better. It was a Sundance darling, not just a direct to video money grab.ETA: I don't remember seeing Brick in my local theater either. It doesn't take a monster budget for a noir piece. I guess its from the 2008 Festival, so my Willis prediction isn't going to pan out.

The Wanderers

All kinds of awesome. The closing music sequence of "The Wanderer" may be my new all time favorite. Terror from the Baldies was so laughably soft. The climax of the Baldies storyline cracked me up. The Ducky Boys were great too. If your a fan of cheesy awesomeness or The Warriors you have to check this out. American Graffiti for guys that aren't pansys.

I liked Brick a lot. Assassination was not nearly as dark or visceral. At times it was almost Nancy Drewish and the plotlines predictable and juvenile. Not to say I did not enjoy it, but it was really just a trifle.2.5/5

Next Door

This Norwegian film was one of the more erotic (at times) films I've seen, altho the interspersed violence and brutality made me wilt.

Seemed a bit sluggish at times, altho it is only about 75 minutes long.

Weird conglamoration reminded me of Barton Fink (hall scenes), Mullholland Drive, & Fight Club.

Very strange movie, but one I do not think I will ever forget. Some remarkably disturbing scenes, and I must recommend it, if you are a fan at all of the genre.

I wanted to see this when I saw the trailer, but Skribbles made me skeptical. I think Ill have to check it out now after your and cosjobs' endorsements

Never heard of this, but sounds worth checking out.I never got the hate for Brick by some people here though. I thought it was very good, not cliched at all. (not directing this at you specifically)

The Jacket

I just got around to watching this because time travel scifi almost always disappoints me and I am not a fan of Adrian Brody. Boy was I wrong. THis is a really good, tight scifi and Brody does a tremendous job in the lead. If you like the gene in the least, you should really check this out.

Liked this a lot..I think when it came out, they promoted it almost like a horror movie or something, and that hurt it. After liking the movie a lot, I thought the ending might be a letdown, but I thought it was good as well

Not a great movie, but Brody is excellent, as usual.

I don't know what it is. Just watched the new Wolverine. Decent story, good action, great effects, but I just never find myself satisfied from these superhero flicks when they're done. Spiderman, Iron Man, Hulk even Batman. I guess I can't take them seriously. Must be me getting old.

watched terry gilliam's "tideland" the other day. he opens the film with a direct address to the viewer and freely admits that some viewers will hate this film while a few will love it. he also said that he's been trying to find his inner child in his films and believes he's finally found his inner child: a little girl.

what's interesting to me about this film is that is his most personal film (even though it is an adaptation of a novel) but somehow feels the least "gilliam-esque" (perhaps because it is an adaptation). it's beautifully shot and the acting is fine with jeff bridges, janet macteer, and the little girl playing the lead.

i liked it on some level. it's sweet and simple really. it's just not what i wanted nor was it what i had come to expect from gilliam.

Rented 2 movies this weekend... pretty much hated them both...

The Wresler - hey, look at me, I've made really bad decisions my whole life... and I always take the easy way out. Given the chance to turn things around, I still screw up and do what is easiest. There should be a whole freakin' movie about me! Just awful...

7 Pounds - good concept... but jeez... it was like you could pretty much figure out what was going to happen at least mid way through the movie if not earlier... then it was like just waiting to watch it happen. Just not very interesting... and I thought the whole jellyfish thing was stupid.

Went retro again over the weekend....

Next of Kin

Patrick Swayze, Liam Neeson, and Bill Paxton are hillbilly brothers at odds with the Chicago mob led by Adam Baldwin and Ben Stiller. Do I really need to say more? Best enjoyed for all the references to the word "kin", which I can't name another movie that even uses the term. Final graveyard shoot out is kind of a disappointment. Its no Road House, but it ain't bad.

3/5

Waiting For Guffman

Kind of embarrassed to call myself a mockumentary fan when I hadn't seen any of Christopher Guest's work besides Best of Show until a few months ago. Humorous, but no new ground covered here from what I've already seen. Fun to watch Levy and Willard play off each other, but thats about it. I didn't understand the whole alien subplot.

2.5/5

Lucas

Maybe I would have enjoyed it when it was released, but I hated it now. The football related climax was unnecessary and pointless. Charlie Sheen and even the rest of the jocks confused the hell out me. I would recommend nearly every other coming of age 80's movie over this one.

I loved the Wrestler and thought it deserved the hype. He may have taken the easy way out socially and chose not to attempt to communicate his decisions to anyone, but he sure didn't take the easy way out on himself by putting himself through that much pain for relatively nothing only trying to gain acceptance and "stardom" among his fans. He was just a tortured soul down to the bone, a classic tragically flawed character, which is what movies should be all about in the first place.

I think that there are tons of movies with likable, practically perfect people. So I find characters who are deeply flawed to be far more interesting.
