This is just as much art related as it is movie related, but Tim Burton fans must check out this interview with Charlie Rose from last November. It's a fascinating look into the creative process, and they even touch on education-related themes that I think are very important.

wierdest thing about that particular drive-in... the house on the hill directly above it with straight-shot views of the screen. full moons every night.and strange that it never occured to me- but if I'm going to actually go see porn in person, a drive-in makes a hell of a lot of sense. I'm betting the trips to the concession stands were real :pickle:
in my early 20's, i went out on a date with this woman and she planned everything. she picks me up and told me that some of our evening would be spent at a drive-in. fun! as we pull up to the drive in, i get this incredible deja vu washes over me. it's the very same drive-in that i went to as a kid! my date picks up on my curious demeanor and asks me what's wrong. i tell her the backstory and we have a good laugh. we watched "alien", i think, but spent the bulk of the movie in her car's backseat enjoying ourselves.

closest thing we had was a drive-in trip to see what turned out to be a gay Pirate movie... mid-70s. don't remember it being pRony though. I'm going to bet that thing is campy gold at this point.
these were not my dad's best years as a parent. it took him the better part of 15-18 years of learning on the job to get the hang of it all. the last movie my dad took me to as a kid was this adian zmed vehicle. at the end of it all, my dad took me aside and said,"i didn't expect it to be like that. probably not a good idea to tell your mother that we saw this."
Dude, I live in Northern California in the Wine Country. Anyone that lived out here in the 70s may remember the drive in that existed on the Petaluma / Novato border. Nothing remarkable about a drive in, right? Wrong. This drive in showed nothing but porn. Hardcore porn. Seriously. In high school, a few of us one night. It was weird.

Yeah, and driving north on highway 101 there was a split second where you could see the screen. Imagine driving home at night and getting caught in bumper to bumper traffic!

I posted this in the Avatar thread, but I wanted to re-post here just because this is the "official" FFA movie thread.

Avatar

Wow.

Amazing movie. The short story is my friend from Industrial Light and Magic invited me to a private screening at Lucas Ranch. The theater was beautiful, the sound was incredible, and I admit is was cool watching the movie alongside the people that contributed to some of the special effects.

But the movie...just incredible. My first thought after seeing this movie was of George Lucas. Because I don't want to know what Lucas SAYS about this movie. I want to know what he THINKS. How can Lucas watch this movie without envy? In Avatar, James Cameron takes all the promise of the last three Star Wars movies and even some of the same technology and gives us a far better movie than Lucas is capable of creating. There's no doubt that Lucas has a brilliant creative mind. But Lucas simply cannot write a movie or competently direct actors to produce a film this good.

In some ways, Avatar achieves the same effect that WALL•E did so well: Avatar has long stretches that are pure CGI, but the execution is so good you get lost in a story that in 100% simulated. I think that's a special feat. I have long complained that CGI is woefully inadequate in that it takes you right out of the story instantly. But in Avatar, Cameron and the effects groups have succeeded in creating a world where you sometimes forget it's all fake.

The movie has obvious parallels to the current war in the middle east. And the Native American metaphor is also thinly veiled. Avatar is a bit like Inglourious Basterds in that it's almost a fantasy wish-fulfillment about the plight of the Native Americans. Some will dismiss Cameron's politics here as simplistic or even anti-American.

I think Avatar was fantastic.
Thinly veiled? They hit the audience over the head with early and often, right down to Wes Studi as the voice of the native chief.Visually this movie is everything you say and much more but artistically it is pretty much a one dimensional remake of Dances With Wolves on an alien planet. At least Costner's characters had layers and depth, Cameron's are about as one dimensional as they get (irredeemably evil military commander, 100% money driven corporate representative, completely benevolent indigenous species and a main character who is about as conflicted in his allegiance as a fat person choosing between a Twinkie and another Twinkie.

Visually this is, without question, the most stunning movie I have ever seen, everything else is as formulaic as it gets.
very, very :pickle: ... as in, I agree with everything 100%.subtlety not exactly Cameron's forte. if the movie had any of it, I think it had enough of a story to have made this thing transcendent instead of just a fun watch. but it actively frustrated me while I watched as each point of possible plot-turn went with the hammer instead of the wiggle. but as I said, still thought it was fun to watch and have no regrets about shelling out $16(!?) per to see it.

I really wish the story had turned like this:

Sorry- my spoiler isn't working... but I'm not really giving anything away here.

drop the corporate suit character and the "unobtainium" ... pointless. have the story be about Weaver's biological research- she's trying to find something to help cure some disease or whatnot on earth. the work she does may lead to a cure, but will irrevocably damage/kill pandora. not brilliant, and doesn't even change the overall structure of the film much since her bio-pharm bosses will fill in as Ribisi's character, but at least there's some point of conflict and moral uncertainty in where it goes from there.
That's a solid idea. Regarding the writing in Avatar, I think it's clear that some directors have their fortes. For example, Tim Burton is a brilliant artist, but I think he has deficiencies as a director. George Lucas is one of the most original visual visionaries in film. But he can't direct a Ford commercial - much less a full length movie.

taking a long time to work through the prisoner series, but uniformly intelligent, ahead of its time & well done.

recently saw surveillance and next (gamer, pandorum & sukiyaki western django on deck... latter from the director of audition and ichi the killer)...

surveillance is by david lynch's daughter (first and only other movie since boxing helena, whch i never saw)... captures some of her famous father's signature atmospheric menace, moodiness and goofiness (includes actor from third rock and actress from SNL), and stars bill pullman of lost highway. i found it interesting at first, but telegraphing the ending muted and dampened the payoff. the ending was depraved enough to make caligula look like a good feelin family film in comparison (of course some people will now see it BECAUSE of this disclaimer). i can't recommend it.

next - nicholas cage sci-fi, based on a philip k. **** short story about a man that can see two minutes into the future. he is simultaneously being tracked down by the feds to help foil a nuclear plot, as well as by the bad guys, to prevent him from lending an assist to the feds and compromising the planned attack. kind of an interesting premise (similar to another **** short, minority report... was the denzel washington vehicle of a few years ago ALSO based on a #### short?), directed by new zealander lee tamahori, who i think also directed the brilliant once were warrors. still though, had its moments, but ultimately dissatisfying (even by lowbrow action/adventure standards), especially the incomplete feeling "non-ending", and the "events" leading up to it.

stephen king has to be the most prolific generator/impetus of movies from his novels, but **** has quite a few... some excellent (blade runner might be my favorite movie, with 2001, clockwork orange & seven samurai), pretty good (total recall and minority report), fair to middling (the rotoscoped scanner darkly), not so good (next) and heinous (paycheck), pretty much runnning the gamut and spectrum of possibilities.

Mother of Tears

I haven't watched this yet, but it's waiting on my DVR like some kind of twisted freak in your cellar. I've seen a lot more Dario Argento films than I'd care to reveal. They are often repulsive and vile. And yet, much like a traffic accident with multiple decapitations, it's hard to look away.

Hold me. I want my mommy.
Blech. Argento movies are always disgusting, but the sheer joyous terror in his classic movies made it worth it. This movie is disgusting AND boring. The killer monkey should have tipped me off.

Had this in last night but couldn't get into it at all. Some cool stylish camera work and some nods to hardcore gaming fans (like teabagging your dead opponent), but ultimately not much more than a perverse little turd of a movie. Was really looking forward to it and it had some good ideas, but the execution was horrible. Butler needs a better agent. The guy from Dexter looked like he was having a lot of fun as the villain, thats really the only nice thing I have to say about it.

1.5/5

I know, right? Butler has a great role in a little gem called Dear Frankie. A beautiful indy film. He's excellent in that movie. Methinks Butler is cashing in on his 300 success rather than looking for good roles.

a few pages back there was discussion of best american horror films of past decade...

not american, but del torro's devil's backbone was in 2001.

has anybody seen versus? i think i saw it years ago, but reordered from netflix (evil dead like camp comedy/horror about japanese gangsters vs. zombies)...

Totally. That is a great date movie - and the best part is the movie is actually good. Some date movies stink.

Star Trek - this movie was meant to be a spoof, right?
Hmmmmm. I am looking forward to seeing this, and yours is the only negative review I've read.
i'm wondering if i rented the right movie. i'd heard pretty good things too. i honestly can't believe what i just watched.it was 2 hours of trying to piece together every cheesy line.

"dammit Jim I'm a doctor not a physicist"

"I'm giving her all she's got captain!"

the guy who played Bones was trying so hard to be like the guy from the tv series, it was hysterical really.

the accents for Scott, Sulu, Chekov :fishing:

i guess i was just expecting something different.

karl urban was the new bones (he was the hitman who took out matt damon's girlfriend on the bridge in bourne 2... the german woman from run lola run)... most reviewers thought he did a good job of "channelling" mccoy...i thought the funniest scene was when scottie asked for a towel after being beamed up to the enterprise...

BTW, in the middle of player and it is pretty much unwatchable... might be the worst movie i have ever scene, so at this point just watching to confirm it is a a new nadir (i agree with above that it an interesting premise, but horrific execution... & the dexter actor is best part... that is like joe theisman saying going into shock was the best part of his compound leg fracture!)...

to paraphrase churchill, this was a bomb inside a disaster inside a turkey... so far, it is making battlefield earth look like citizen kane...

there was a Simpsons episode where Bart gets on Krusty's TV show with the line "I didn't do it". At the end of the show after it had run its course, Lisa says something like "Now you can become more than just a shallow character with a one line catchphrase". At that point, they cue every character to somehow enter the room with their own patented catchphrase

"Doh"

(Burrrrp!)

"High Everybody!"

"Excellent"

"Hiddly-Ho!"

etc.

After watching Star Trek, I felt like Lisa --> "If anyone wants me I'll be in my room"

500 Days of Summer - pretty darn good! It was nice to see a movie that changes it up a bit and is realistic. Can't remember the actors name but I was quite impressed by him. I can't remember what else I've seen him in but I sure wasn't looking forward to 2 hours of him as the lead. Best and funniest romantic comedy I've seeen in a looong time. 4/5

Great film, but didn't change the fact I wanted to smash Zooey's face with a hot iron. I wish she would play something other than the same character in the every film. There is something undeniably attractive about her, but it wears thinner each time I see the same character.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He was in Brick and I'm pretty sure he was a main character on 3rd Rock from the Sun, although I never watched that show so don't quote me on it.I think his resume is going to be pretty impressive when his career is over.

Used to despise the kid on 3rd Rock, has started a very impressive resume as an actor. Lots of potential with this kid and he seems to be interested in the right diversity of roles. His work in Mysterious Skin was supposedly one of the best performances of the decade, I haven't had a chance to check it out yet.I think he even has promise as Cobra Commander with the GI Joe movies.

Charlie Wilson's War

This is by no means a great movie. It's moderately entertaining. Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are adequate. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is the reason this movie is worth seeing. I am pretty much at the point where I don't need to see Hanks and Roberts any more. They are way overexposed, and they aren't chameleon-like enough to get lost in their performances.

I did not like Brick. Levitt is not a mature actor yet.

I love the concept. I didn't think the acting was very good.

Movies I watched recently:

Moon - awesome indie sci-fi flick and Sam Rockwell gives one of the year's best performances playing a couple versions of the same character. Special effects were understated but very good.

The Hurt Locker - agree with most others that this was an exceptional war film. I liked it a lot.

In The Loop - really good comedy that felt like a Christopher Guest movie on politics.

District 9 - I liked it, but didn't love it. Interesting idea and some cool effects, but not a lot else.

Book of Eli

I am a big fan of post-apocalyptic films, so I went ahead and caught this one at the theatre. THe photography and acting were first rate. And the storyline was ok- except for the integral reliance on The Bible. THat was a pretty big handicap for me. It could have been a solid 3.5 stars, but its heavy-handed theology cost it .6 stars in my book. Worth watching if you are a fan of the genre or The Bible.

2.9/5 stars

Pretty much agree across the board with you here. Except I have not seen In the Loop yet. Red Box does not carry that one, so I am tempted to buy it rather than pay Blockbuster $5. Is it worth owning or should I wait for the Netflix queue? How was Gandolfini?

I've heard great things about In The Loop.

not sure if it's worth owning or not. I could see watching it a couple times though if you like British humor. Gandolfini has one of the smaller roles in it, but he's good.I thought it was cool seeing the chick from My Girl all grown up. I guess she's been working regularly since 2007 but I don't remember seeing her in anything else.

I watched Watchmen tonight. I barely remember the graphic novel from when I was younger, and I read a ton of negative reviews of this movie, but I kind of dug it. Definitely a bit on the long side and it had some parts that didn't really seem to fit, along with some overly graphic violence. Overall though, it felt like watching a comic book. I really wanted to see it in the theater but chickened out after everyone started bashing it. I guess going in with low expectations might have saved it for me.

i thought pandorum was great... definitely reminiscent of alien...

more terrifying and more of a mystery/suspense (on top of sci-fi/horror) in the sense that they wake up with no memory...

i like how the puzzle was pieced together as their memories coalesced over time, and built from multiple viewpoints...

i thought the pacing and intercutting in revealing the unfolding story to the characters and audience was very well done...

highly recommended (if you don't hate the sci-fi/horror genres)...
