watched "hard candy" tonight. ellen page, of "juno" fame in her first big role, plays a young woman that baits and traps a man she believes in a pedophile. she believes he may know what happened to a friend. it is essentially a two person film that has moments of tension. it runs on a little too long but is still pretty good.
I liked this a lot, although it was painful to watch at times as a guy.Ellen Page in Hard Candy >>>>>>>> Juno
those two movies are so different that i can't really compare them. chocolate and cheese. that said, i am considering watching that roller derby flick she was in - "whip it" - just to see her in a film as an adult. i've been digging her in those cisco commercials of late.

True...her characters in both are quite similar though (teen ahead of the curve in wit, logic, and conversation)

Watched "Legion" last night. If the thought of Angels with M-16's seems ridiculous to you, this aint your movie.

I thought it was pretty cool. Very "Assault on Precinct 13" ish.

Roots - I had not seen this since it originally aired in 1977. I am surprised at how well it has held up over 33 years. Sure there are some obvious flaws, particularly geographically (the story primarily takes place in Virginia but is clearly filmed in California) and I am sure the story is as much artistic license by Haley as it is absolute historical fact (the story follows Haley's family from Africa in 1750 through the end of the Civil War). However the story is gripping and well written, the acting is very strong almost across the board. (Some notable actors in Roots: LeVar Burton, Ed Asner, Ben Vereen, Maya Angelou, Lloyd Bridges, Cicely Tyson, Robert Reed, Louis Gossett Jr., Lorne Greene, Ian McShane, John Amos and many more you will recognize)

I was particularly impressed by how the directors chose to be completely candid in their approach to presenting what is obviously a very sensitive subject. N-words, rapes, lynchings etc., all horrible facts about slave life, are dealt with in a very direct manner. Perhaps this should not surprise me but I was expecting something far more sanitized from 1977 broadcast television. I was particularly impressed with the portrayal of the conditions on the slave ships, absolutely horrific. I am not saying this is a 100% accurate portrayal of slave life in America but I think it comes impressively close, particularly the emotional toll of being treated as sub-human and having no control over any aspect of your life. The production is even more impressive when thought of in the context of 1970s television.

As an amusing aside about sanitization I found it hysterical that they had no problem showing topless women in the context of African villages but when there were love scenes it was back to the standard prudish broadcasting practices that earmark American television (all the violence in the world is fine but heaven forbid we see a boob presented in a sexy way).

It is a nine hour marathon production that I strongly recommend people revisit or watch for the first time. I believe the final episode is still the third most viewed show in American television history (51% of households tuned in).

The Lovely Bones - different, not great, some cool effects, a bit of suspense, and a good performance by underrated, IMO, Stanley Tucci.

Brothers - good movie, could have been a wow ending, but fell short IMO. Some good energy on screen, but overall nothing I would strongly recommend. Though I am continually impressed by Tobes McGuire, surprisingly. Gyllenhal was good, the plot was good. Overall it was just good, never approaching great IMO, but the potential was there.

Excellent movie.
Really? I thought it was a little out there. She was supposed to be what, 14? Come on. I had trouble suspending my disbelief.
I guess the exact age didn't matter to me since the important part was that it was an adult male and a teenage girl.

Anyone seen Big Fan with Patton Oswalt ...hadn't heard of it then saw an earlier thread referencing it. Got good reviews - looks like it could be excellent.
I haven't seen it, but I've read a lot of glowing reviews. Looks good.
Just watched it last night, it's available on Netflix instant watch. It was pretty good, not exactly a laugh out loud comedy though. It deals with obsession more than anything. Reminded me a lot of Bottle Rocket with a darker tone, I was kind of unprepared for it really. I thought it was heading for a let down but the third act had a surprise or two for me. It was written/directed by the guy that wrote the Wrestler so expect something a little more along those lines more than a goofball comedy.3.5/5
Sweet. That's kinda what I thought it would be like.

Not a huge fan of Hard Candy. Cool premise, just not that great.

I would agree that it wasn't great. Although I liked the acting and the premise enough to recommend it.

she says that she's 14 but she clearly used that to bait the guy. the whole fiction she has created is to lure him, frighten him, and unbalance him throughout the movie. conceptually, the movie works for me for quite a while before it overreaches and falls apart.
That's pretty much how I felt about it. Concept was unique and kept me interested for a while, but when it fell apart for me it did it in a big way. I thought the ending was just silly and way over the top.

Paranormal Activity sucked. I saw Blair Witch in the theater and loved it, maybe this needed to be seen with a group too. Just too many boring scenes in between the night scenes. A couple of creepy moments gives it a 1.5/5

Pandorum: Very good sci-fi flick even though I'm not a big fan of Dennis Quaid. Not sure what it is about the guy but I just don't like him. A few things in the movie still don't make sense to me like why the Mexican (?) guy couldn't speak english and why he and the chick were trying to kill each other. I didn't see the 'twists' coming although you knew something had to happen when they were talking about 'Pandorum'. 3.5/5

Whiteout: It started out great... what more can you ask for than Kate Beckinsale stripping down and getting in a shower? After that, it was all downhill. The killer was pretty obvious about 15 minutes into the movie. I fell asleep before the ending and when I woke up in the morning I told the girlfriend what I thought the ending was going to be and got it spot on. 1/5

I was referring to this guy. I had no idea it was Cung Le.

Closer. The actor is Vietnamese. He couldn't speak English because he didn't know the language (the ship was filled with people from all over Earth no assumption was made that a universal language on Earth had been decided upon).

He was fighting with the woman over resources.

:shrug:I wouldn't call Cung Le an actor though. He is an MMA fighter.

Watched The Breakfast Club again after ten years or so.

I am amazed at how well this movie holds up. It doesn't seem dated at all.

Anthony Michael Hall's story about attempting suicide with a cap gun is still a very sad and very funny scene after twenty five years.

Watched this about 2 years ago and felt the same way. I was really expecting it to feel more dated but it has held up very well.

A Perfect Getaway: What a horrible piece of garbage. The movie was done fairly well but the overall plot was ridiculously stupid. 1/5
Umm watch it again cuz your spoiler is 100% wrong. I thought the same thing but a secind watch shows me that was your interpretation which was wrong.

Maybe I need to watch it again, I liked it but I was in agreement with Cliff on that scene.
trust me i had the same complaint but after watching it again and knowing what we know the interpretation is completely different and plausible

There are multiple scenes with it. In the tent, taking a piss... and I can't remember the others now. I'll probably watch it again but no time soon.

I know. Just trust me. I fast forwarded to all the scenes that "bothered" me and realized how wrong I was the second time I watched them.

Wow. Just a horrible double feature last night.

GI JOE

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen

By the end of Transformers, I wasn't even paying attention. I just wanted the damn thing to end.

Watched 2012 last night. Mindless action after the first 5-10 minutes. Longish movie that is non-stop. If that's what you are looking for then this is right up your alley.

I liked the Woody Harrelson character and the escape in LA was so over the top it was funny, but the rest of it was :excited:

:excited: Those are two of the worst movies I've had to endure in awhile. No way could I have done it on the same night.

Orphan Had decent expectations for this, and it exceeded them. Good direction and very well done building of suspense. Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard were very good as usual and carried it along nicely, title character was pretty creepy. One thing I didnt understand was why the kids wouldnt tell their parents something was up with the adopted orphan. I realize the orphan threatened them, but wouldnt you trust your parents to help you out in that situation?? As the movie went on, I kept thinking the twist was going to Farmiga was delusional or something and imagined this girl up (her miscarriage?), or it was someone she knew as a kid. Glad it didnt turn out that way, or that it was some kind of special/supernatural power the girl had. I thought the twist was great and original......8.1/10

Food, Inc. - Well, I'll never eat again :goodposting:

They should market this as a dietary video.
I second that. Today, as a matter of fact, I bought local, grass-feed beef and will continue to do so (even though it's 3x as expensive) because of that movie. I'm gonna change my whole way of shopping for health and moral reasons.

If you have read Michael Pollan's Omnivore's Dilema or Fast Food Nation (the source material for Food Inc.) you know that one of the most difficult things for the authors was to try and gain access to slaughterhouses and meat processing plants. Those places are usually sealed tighter than Fort Knox.Well Shaun Monson made a documentary called Earthlings, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, and after years of work managed to sneak cameras into many of these facilities and let me tell you that it isn't pretty. No studio would back the release of the documentary because of the graphic nature of this footage. It is definitely an agenda driven piece (it also focuses on animals as pets, entertainment, clothing and use in science) and I don't agree with all of it but much of it has me questioning my own habits from both a health and ethical standpoint.

If you have ever heard someone say "If I knew where my food came from I probably wouldn't eat it" this movie will show them why they say that.

You can watch it free at www.earthlings.com but be warned there are extremely graphic depictions of animal suffering (it cannot get more graphic so take this warning seriously). Of course it is this capacity for suffering inherent in all animals that should make us all question the system that provides us our food.

The Watchmen

I never read the graphic novel or comic book or wahtever it was so I had background idea of what this was going to be. And I also have no idea if it stayed true to anything. So this is my opinion based solely on the movie - glad I didn't waste any money to watch it. I don't know what it was trying to be nor did I find any character mildly entertaining. The action scenes rather sucked and when I saw a scene that was in a preview I remembered it felt like that scene was forced into the movie simply to make sure that the previews looked good.

Very disappointing and ungood.
I liked the graphic novel and I liked 300, so I wanted to like this movie. Aside from beautiful visuals, I don't think I'd ever watch this movie again.
I just made time to watch this movie. What a craptacular movie it was.Kelly Leak was good though

Surrogates Decent. Although not exactly the same, reminded me enough of I, Robot. Radha Mitchell continues to rise up my charts (watch the movie Feast of Love and you will certainly agree - which was surprisingly good for a rom-drama actually. She's got unexpectedly fantastic twins). Nothing great or all that surprising, but a decent enough watch 6.7/10
I was surprised by how much I like this movie and I do see the I, Robot comparisons, especially with the same actor playing the founder of the surrogates and robots in each movie. I like these types of movies so it could be that I am just a whore for the genre but it was good.

Saw it this weekend and I agree with your review and score. I like these kind of quirky, small and gritty movies and this was good but not great. Patton Oswalt was good, I think they needed to use Kevin Corrigan, his close bud, quite a bit more.
