I went through all the films in chronological order in a short period of time. Ran was next on my list but I never did watch it. I watched all of them upstairs but wanted to watch Ran in my home theater in my basement. I was hoping to get my wife to finally watch a Kurosawa flick with me and actually had if from Netflix at one time but returned it without watching it. I got hooked on The Wire and my Kurosawa fix took an abrupt end.I think it's time to finally watch it.I don't think Dersu Uzala is a great movie but it's arguably his most important film. The backstory to it is amazing. It was his first film after his suicide attempt. Low point of his professional and personal life. He couldn't get work so he directed a Russian film, his first one in color and the first one without Mifune. wow.Someone needs to do a movie about his life. Is there one?

I knew absolutely nothing about that. very interesting.I also saw it in the theaters with my folks when it came out. Knew it was by the guy that did my beloved Seven Samurai.

The Lovely Bones

I'm usually all about these kind of movies. This one just rubbed me the wrong way. Victims of a serial killer dancing around and smiling together in heaven or some sort of limbo? Hmmmm, I'm not buying it. Haven't read the book but I hope it was misinterpreted here. Too much CGI, not enough emotion.

Also thought the end of Tucci was incredibly weak as well. If all it took was rattling an icicle, couldn't one of the first victims figure out how to end him before he killed a dozen or so? Very creepy that the ghosts of those children, or maybe just the Salmon girl, were still following him that close all those years in the future. Maybe I'm over-analyzing here.

Oh yeah, I thought Susan Sarandon was great in it though and wish she got some more screen time

Wind Chill

One of the best horror/scary films I have seen in a while. There are actually characters that I cared about, get to know and then see grow through believable changes. That's hard to find in a drama nowadays, much less a horror movie. The thrills and shocks were good and the movie does its business and ends in a refreshing 88 minutes. There are a helluva lot of 100 minute films that would ahve been much tighter, had they been willing to come in at the hour and a half mark.

Emily Blunt is the star and she did a really good job.

This thing was exec produced by Soderberg and Clooney, so it piqued my interest enough for me to rent it, even tho there are virtually no reviews. I am pretty sure its a direct to dvd movie that sat on the shelf for a year or two before they finally sold it to Redbox for fifty dollars.

I highly recommend this one. Its smart (relative to the genre), scary and fun.

3.5/5 stars overall, but 4.5/5 for a horror movie

Saw "The Losers" today.. Never read the "Books" so can't compare it to that.. we enjoyed it quite a bit.. I'd give it 3 1/2 out of 5.

Good action, some funny lines, good story lines, some nice twists..

I'd give it a 4 out of 5 but I HATE movies that end with... "Hey, we'll tell you how it ends.. IN THE SEQUEL!"

Saying that.. I'll be paying for the next Losers movie I'm sure.. they sucked me in.. :bag:

Wade, that was a punch him in the face look, not a throw him off the building look
I will help you legless pooch. Call me legless pooch one more time and you will be headless Jensen.Legless pooch sounds cool, like you are a pirate
:lmao: Agreed on the funny lines but the story was awful

I Love You Man - Better than i thought. I laughed out loud more than a few times. Paul Rudd is a pretty underrated actor, and i thank god that Seth Rogen didnt play his buddy in the movie. 8/10
Just saw this tonight. Hilarious movie.Paul Rudd is very underrated.

I have never watched "How I Met Your Mother", so I am not familiar with Segel, but he was very good. (I will add that he is not aging well. I thought for sure he was nearing age forty, so it was surprising to see his IMDB page list him as being born in 1980).

Anti-Christ (Netflix Instant stream)

Still trying to wrap my head around this flick. It is a very dark, and deeply disturbing film. I'm sensing an underlying theme of "Lilith" from the Garden of Eden. Was Eden evil? She called it "Satans church". Have any of you seen this film?

that's lars von trier, right? if so then i stay far away. i used to be a big fan of his but i have given up on him. he's too far gone, y'know?

I've been using Netflix to try and see all the most recent best picture nominees. Inglorious Basterds and Avatar were the only ones I saw at the theater.

Watched An Education yesterday. The whole premise of a guy my age with a 16 year old girl made me tense. I really couldn't shake that. Good movie though. Alfred Molina is great.

Precious last week. That was a little tough to watch. A good story with some good performances.

Up in the Air two weeks ago. I really enjoyed this. I'm sure it's been talked to death already.

Hopefully A Serious Man will eventually make it to me. It's been at the top of my queue for a month. Also still need to see Blind Side.

same here. has said Long Wait forever. seems like if you don't get a new release the first day it comes out, it could be a month or two before you finally get it. annoying part of netflix.

Now's probably a good time for me to admit that I was never a big fan of Blade Runner either. Sure, it was influential to hundreds of sci-fi plots after its time, but I just didn't think it was that great. Went back and forth with a film professor on this once before and we concluded that I was an idiot so I'm just happy to see I'm not completely alone on it.

I would much rather watch Children of Men (Which is also on his list), and its not even really a choice in my book.
I watched Children of Men tonight and enjoyed it, and it was a fresh storyline for me. It was sad to see no floating cars in the future though. For a two hour movie with fairly little action through the first half, it seemed to pace itself fairly well and I never really lost interest (It helps that I was watching it in the dark and quiet). I thought the acting was fairly good (least worst Clive Owen I've ever seen), Michael Caine was a little annoying though and as somebody said, I wasn't sad to see him killed, and I'm surprised we haven't seen more out of the girl who played Kee because she did a respectable job. The whole movie I was a little confused on why the baby was so important, and not Kee, and what exactly was the Human Project? Worth a Neflix. 7/10As a side note, I have never been more disappointed with a topless 19 year old in my movie watching life, pregnant women just aren't my thing I guess.
 The whole premise of the movie is that humans can't have children anymore. There hadn't been a child born in almost 20 years. The Human Project was a group of scientists/others who were dedicated to finding a cure for the infertility. So the baby (and the mother) is incredibly important/amazing/politically charged/etc.

But it seems to me that the mother is the important one, not the baby. I would figure everybody would be out to get to the woman not the child.

Both would be important. I love the battle scene. Where everybody stops fighting as they walk through the battle ground. One of my favorite movie scenes of all time

The child was important as a political symbol. That's why the rebels wanted it. They didn't care about finding out why. They just wanted the societal/political/religious power that the baby would represent.

In terms of research and figuring out what separates the mother from other women, I see what you're saying. But no one had seen a baby for close to 20 years. When the youngest person alive died it was a day of world-wide mourning. The baby symbolized hope--just its existence carried with it incredible power and influence.

Yeah, that looks excruciating.

I watched American Ganster this weekend and I liked it a lot. One of the reasons I was hesitant to watch it is because I'm not a real big fan of cop movies, and it seems ganster movies, after watching the most popular ones, are very cliche. Well, this was absolutely not a cliche ganster movie. With the ganster in the movie being a black American instead of Italian, it was very different. Also, the lead ganster was not a 'flashy' guy, wich I liked. I thought Crowe played the cop role very well. I like that it wasn't so over the top. He seemed to play it somewhat understated, sans cheesy cop sayings and stereotypes. Denzel played the lead very well too.

Slammin Salmon

Broken Lizard has been pretty consistent with the quality of their films since bursting onto the scene with Super Troopers, with the exception of Club Dread for many. This one did not disappoint, but I feel like I've seen this movie before, about 4 or 5 times in the last few years. No more restaurant movies for a while please. Michael Clark Duncan is as hilarious as I've ever seen him as the Champ.

3/5
Never heard of this. I'll have to keep an eye out for it.I didnt like Club Dread much after the first viewing, but I think thats mostly because I was looking for another Super Troopers and its just not that good, but its still funny. I think Beerfest is just about as good as ST.

Do they have any other movies?!
This was their fourth and it just came out on dvd last week so you haven't missed anything. I have a buddy that swears Club Dread is the funniest movie he's ever seen, definitely their weakest effort imo.
Got this queued up for tonight. Big Broken Lizard fan.1) Super Troopers

2) Club Dread

3) Beerfest

4) Puddle Cruiser (their 1st release, low budget, decent but definitely their worst)

Blindside: It was good. Very contrived and unrealistic, but still a good story. 3.5/5

Sherlock Holmes: Liked it. The surprising twist at the end was not very surprising at all. Jude Law was great. 3.5/5

The best comparison I can think of for this movie is a 1970's version of The Wire. That in itself sets it apart, but throw in great acting by everyone except T.I., and a compelling antihero like Frank Lucas, and its off the top of my head my favorite crime movie from the 2000's not called The Departed

Flash Gordon

Heard of this, never even seen a clip of it. Holy costume overload batman. I always thought Flash was fast, not a Jets quarterback. I don't even know how to explain what I just watched. I'm positive I didn't understand it. Will try again with shrooms sometime. Queen soundtrack wasn't nearly as good as their work on Highlander, was pretty (corny) great though. Favorite random scene was at the beginning when the assistant is awoken by a piece of the moon falling from the sky and hitting his bed. His surprised response...."Cowabunga!"

It's over your head unless you're on drugs/5

You missed out on this when you were a kid. You would appreciate it more if you were 7 when you first saw it.

Don't need drugs to appreciate one of the most awesomest movies of all time!"Oh well, who wants to live forever?!? Bwahahahaha. DIVE!!!"

Cool, I'll keep that in mind for my boy. I'll be revisiting this with him in a few years, he's almost 3.

After a lot of negative reviews I had very low expectations but I thought The Men Who Stare at Goats was pretty good. Probably not something I would recommend but worth a view imo. 2.5/5

:goodposting: It got pretty good reviews in this thread from what I could remember. Definitely not for anyone, but if you know what to expect, it delivers. Not sure what people wanted from this movie?

It doesn't really go anywhere and its mostly light comic fair, but I enjoyed it a lot.

Speaking mostly about reviews when it came out. I don't really remember what the consensus was in this thread.

Watched "Crazy Heart" last night. I really liked it. Wife thought it lacked a lot of plot, but it was a good film. Easy to see why Bridges won the Oscar. Excellent music as well.

Finally got most of my DVD collection uploaded here

The collecterz website is pretty cool, especially if you have a scanner. I uploaded 681 dvds in about 5 hours.

The Men Who Stare at Goats: Umm... what was there to like about this? I missed about 20 minutes of it when I doozed off but really, I don't think I missed much. Not funny. No intriguing story. Just nothing. .5/5

Legion: Went in expecting some cool angels and some fireworks. Didn't get much of either. Why were they trying to save the baby? It never says why it is so important... unless I missed it. I wasn't expecting much and I got less. 1/5

Daybreakers: Not bad. Not good. Mildly entertaining but doesn't matchup well against other vampire/disease movies (Blade, 28 Days, * of the Dead, I am Legend). It could have been a little longer and explained the 'new society' a little better. 2.5/5

The Slammin Salmon: Probably Broken Lizard's worst film but saying that, it was still damn funny. Great one-liners. Wasn't a fan of Michael Clarke Duncan's role. He did pretty good but the charactor just wasn't interesting. Steve Lemme kills it (ejacudor :lmao: ). Kevin Hefferman probably had his worst role in the Broken Lizard movies. Cobie Smulders  . The scene with everyone sending champagne to the "happy couple" had me in tears. 4/5

Finally watched The Hurt Locker last night. Enjoyed it, but I think it suffered from high expectations.

As a series of events, I thought it did well. I an neither a direct participant or scholar on the Iraq war, but the movie left me convinced it made an effort to make the setting realistic - the backdrop was what it is really like to be over there fighting. As a single, unifying story or character study... well, I guess I'm left thinking all the awards this film got were an opportunity to give a fistful of Oscars to a movie with a female director.
I liked the movie, but it suffered from too much hype.

We Are Marshall was on TV this weekend. I recorded it, and just got done watching it. Wow... what a story.

I don't even think it's possible for me to critique this movie. At least it just wouldn't seem right to me. It's a pretty amazing story that I think anyone would like regardless of how they feel about football. Yes, I recommend it.

I gained a lot of respect for Bobby Bowden for doing what he did in the movie.

watched season 1 of Pushing Daisies. Thought it was terrible. I know... if it was so bad why did I watch the whole season? Let's just say it was kind of like I lost a bet... sort of. Just sayin' it was not voluntary.

The show has a narrator that just seemed very annoying to me. Found out the directors wanted to make a show with a 'fairy tail' feel to it... I think they succeded. It is like a fairy tail... very overly dramatic. By far the best part of the show over everything and everyone else is Chi McBride's character. He was the only person that made me laugh.

Recommendation: stay away

Avatar - Good flick, Dances With Wolves redux in the future. Very entertaining but not close to an all time classic type of movie.

District 9 - Loved it!!! Very cool Sci-Fi. I really liked the plot and it actually left the door open for a sequel.

Is it okay to admit that I thought Sherlock Holmes was pretty darn entertaining? Downey, Jr. and Jude Law had nice chemistry. Wasn't expecting much, but I came away thoroughly entertained. It's one I could turn around and watch again.

4/5

Just wathced "Ninja Assassin". HOLY COW! THAT WAS AWESOME! HOW DID I MISS THIS EARLIER? If you like Ninjas at all, this movie is the best Ninja movie in a VERY long time. It's really bloody, so don't watch with the wife or kids. But I will defiitely be hoping for a sequel or more of this genre done this way. AWESOME AWESOME movie. Great fight scenes and decent enough plot to carry it.
Just watched this this weekend, and I'll agree with the above assessment. Maybe change "AWESOME AWESOME" to "Really fun/entertaining".
