The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Creative and kind of interesting, but a miss overall. At least for me. :wall:
Agree. Gilliam is one of those artists for whom I have immense respect, but I never seem to be able to sit and enjoy his movies as much as I think I should.
his later stuff has been so disappointing. "tideland" was a total trainwreck. unwatchable really.
I'm on board with all of this. I tried Tideland, and it was one of the few films I wasn't even interested in giving a chance. I shut it off within the first few minutes. Gilliam lost his mind years ago, and I feel as if Fear and Loathing was the last great effort we receive from him. Clever script, that Gilliam wrote, but the film turns into a total mess by the time it's over, I realize that was kind of point, but it seems to have carried over for the last dozen years. I would rather watch Time Bandits than Dr. Parnassus again. I don't think it would have been any less muddled if Ledger was able to finish his role. Some great moments, but fails as a whole. The parts I liked, I really liked.

If you like this type of mind bending fantasy, be sure you've seen The Fall, Mirrormask, and the City of the Lost Children. I couldn't possibly pimp the Fall enough.

Seriously? Are you really posting from inside the theater?Worse than tuna.
I really enjoyed Iron Man 2.
Surprised here. I thought it was disappointing. Not Transformers bad, but more on par with the newest Terminator.
I thought it was exactly as good as the first Iron Man. Maybe it's all about expectations. I hoped to laugh and to watch some stuff blow up and that's exactly what I got.Nothing is as bad as Transformers.

this is one of my favorite films of all time. it was startlingly original, clever and original.

I'm a big fan of CoLC as well and enjoyed The Fall very much too. Never seen Mirrormask, but seeing it compared to the other two means I will definitely have to check it out.

I don't remember too much of it, except the terrifying vision of giant ape-chickens and a guy with a box of french fries as a head. I'm not sure if it was actually "good" but definitely unique and an overabundance of imagination.

Zombieland was awesome. I wish there were more short, fun movies like this :lmao:

Bill Murray was money: "I just played 9 holes at Riviera. Just walked on. It was empty!" :lmao:

 Agreed. I saw Moon, Serious Man and Zombieland in the last week and Zombieland was the best imo.

Crazy on the Outside

I'm admittedly kind of a sucker for these cheesy, low-budget, B comedies. I liked Joe Somebody a lot, I liked this enough. It is what it is, the same Tim Allen we knew in the 90s. Liotta doesn't get to have nearly enough fan and as usual JK Simmons doesn't get enough screen time but kills it when he's on.

Legion

Also a sucker for B horror movies involving a group of strangers locked in a building against demons trying to get in. No, seriously, I am. This time it's angels, but who's counting? Not nearly as fun as other entries in the genre (From Dusk Till Dawn, Demon Knight, Feast). Pacing is too fast for it's own good and the atmosphere is never fully developed, no sense of terror or dread which should be the essential theme here. Old demon lady cursing at people was entertaining. The angel Gabriel is introduced way too late in the movie as the central antagonist. Again it is what it is, and poorly executed at that.

The Wire

The wife and I are about to finish season 4. I've seen the entire series and I'm re-watching with her. I won't go on and on, but this is the best drama in the history of television - and to take it further - most dramatic films don't even measure up to The Wire.

I watched Feast again last week, love that flick. 10x better than almost any horror or sci-fi that makes it into theaters these days.Im also a sucked for movies where people are trapped somewhere, or just movies where the entire thing takes place in a limited amount of places (Bug, American Buffalo, etc). If the acting is any good, im glued

I wish they would start producing at least the Tales from the Crypt movies again. Demon Knight was awesome, and Bordello of Blood wasn't SO bad. I'm all for twisted stories of irony and dark humor. As soon as I get finished watching all the episodes of Trailer Park Boys I'm going to queue up the entire series.

For Your Eyes Only

Finally hit the 80's on my way through the Bond library for the first time. Well done, but nothing really stands out. No uber hotties, no interesting bad guys, just a smuggling tycoon that eats walnuts while participating in gunfights. A step back to reality after Moonraker, I suppose. The age difference between Bond and Bibi Dahl was a tad bit unsettling. Belongs somewhere in the middle of the pack of Bond films.

I thought Zack & Miri was completely awful. Worst movie I've seen in a long time. Badly acted, completely predictable and even the #### jokes weren't that funny.
Do you really go into a movie like Zack & Miri looking for good acting and a twist ending? Rogen did the same thing he's done in nearly all of his movies.
I disagree. His movies are usually pretty clever. This one was not.
I'm on board with Drifter. Usually a fan of both Smith and Rogen, but I can't describe how much I loathed this movie.

The Girlfriend Experience

Steven Soderburgh directs real life porn star Sasha Grey in this excellent cinéma vérité piece about a high-priced prostitute. I liked it. It's not the kind of movie I'd see again, but it's very well done. Recommended to viewers that tire of ridiculously big acting performances and Hollywood formulas.
It was hard watching Sasha grey in a real movie after I've seen her take it in the exit...Goodish movie though and I thought she did a fairly good job, I was kind of confused by the end of the movie with all the jumping around. Sasha grey is pretty damn good looking.
I thought this movie was boring as hell and mainly because Sasha Grey (who is hot and VERY naughty) looked bored through much of it. I think she changed her facial expression once or twice in the entire film. I was really disappointed with this because I'm a huge Soderbergh fan but I wasn't impressed at all with Sasha Grey's acting. Has me leery about how she'll do on "Entourage" this season.

Clearly, Sasha Grey is not an actor. However, I think Soderbergh cast her because her character is pretending to be something she is not. She's pretending to be a high-priced prostitute that caters to rich men. But she is devoid of the intelligence and culture that would attract those kinds of clients.

I wasn't expecting her to be Meryl Streep. :hifive: But I couldn't generate any interest in the film or her character or anything that happened because she seemed bored throughout the entire film. Her inability to create a character of interest prevented me from feeling involved in the story.

he didn't do any better with the other non-actors in "bubble". grey is a performer but most definitely not an actress.

I agree with that. For me, I sometimes get tired of seeing big time actors act all super acty in their acting. It's just too much. So while I'd loathe to see an amateur like Grey in every movie, it was refreshing in this one case.

What surprised me is Grey is an interesting person. I've seen her interviewed; read her posts on Twitter; seen her podcasts and she is an interesting person. She's not your typical vapid porn star. So I expected to see something in terms of her character but instead she was just blank. Maybe that's what Soderbergh was going for; I don't know. But it prevented me from carrying anything about the story (what story there was; it really meanders a lot).

I thought Girlfriend Experience was excellent for what it was. I really enjoyed it.

Recently watched Downfall. Very good flick.

We are in a movie rut at the Dogg house. We've seen a lot of the modern films that are critically lauded, so we're going back to some of the classics we missed over the years. Here's what I have in the queue coming up:

Sorcerer

Heaven Can Wait

The Producers

Moonlighting

Lenny

Interiors

Save the Tiger

Mephisto

Julia

The Ruling Class

Tess

The Candidate

The Last Detail

Heartland

Shampoo

Bound for Glory

Kagemusha

Day for Night

The Man Who Would Be King

Night Moves

Nashville

Carnal Knowledge

A Man for All Seasons

A Bridge Too Far

Don't Look Now

A Touch of Class

An early Kate Beckinsale and Chloe Sevigny vehicle called The Last Days of Disco. I actually liked this movie but it made me want to slap both of those two and every other young person in New York in the 80s before it was over.

I haven't seen anything on that list either. Kind of disheartening.

I'm not so much ashamed as I am excited. And don't get me started on foreign films. I like foreign films a lot, but I've missed a ton of the classics (Fellini, Bertolucci, Bergman, Kurosawa, etc.)

these are all standouts for me for different reasons.

The director (Nicolas Roeg) of "Don't Look Now" was a former cinematographer so it's a very visually impressive looking film.

Cool. I think I'll enjoy a lot of movies on this list. I culled a lot of movie sites to find these movies, and almost all of them feature actors or directors that are my favorites. I like Warren Beatty, but I've only seen a handful of his movies. I like Peter O'Toole, but just like Beatty, I am way behind in seeing some of his greatest works.

Yeah, that wasn't so true about Barry Sonnenfeld. The genius behind the camera of Miller's Crossing and Blood simple went on to direct Wild Wild West, Men in Black, Men in Black II, The Addams Family, and Addams Family Values.

I thought "Men in Black" was an entertaining film. "The Addams Family" wasn't so bad for what it was. "Wild Wild West" was insanely awful.

Sure. I just hoped he'd take on more dramatic material sometimes.

beatty is real hit-or-miss with me. it's not so much his work in them as the films themselves. i dig "mccabe" and "bonnie & clyde" but much of the rest of his work is very meh for me. two of his movies that i haven't seen but want to are "parrallax view" and "reds".

Parrallax View is very good. I loved Bugsy. Bullworth was a weird movie, but I enjoyed it.

Heaven Can Wait is a very clever and entertaining movie. Charles Grodin delivers, as usual.

From your list The Man Who Would Be King is hands down my favorite. It's one I can watch pretty much anytime it comes on.

Grodin is always funny. Makes me want to watch Midnight Run again.

it's a movie that is really to love. lots of fun all the way through.

Curiousity got the better of me. I checked out The Human Centipede trailer. :lmao:  :bs:
That looks awful. Not sure why that movie needed to be made, and no part of me wants to see it. Still, how could it be worse than the Twilight franchise?
Best part of Human Centipede is that it's the first in a franchise. Wanted to get people accustomed to the squeamishness before the sequel comes out.
