Without getting too much into spoilers with Shutter Island I just have to mention a couple of things that bothered me that haven't been mentioned. That is the cheesyness of some scenes. When the US GI's mowed down the Dachau guards, it almost seemed more like a Tarantino scene. Even though the GI's all started shooting at the same time, the guards fell in a row. Also the cliff climbing and driving scene with DiCaprio and the warden were really cheap looking...and the opening boat scene.
Just some things that surprised me coming from Scorcese. I liked the movie overall because of the atmosphere and some great acting from just about everyone. Not great but I always enjoy a Scorcese movie the first time. The don't have the rewatchability that some of his earlier movies did though.
I like what he did with the soundtrack too although some of the abrupt endings of dramatic music might have been a little much.

"look, you guys wear the same size Tshirt"The more I watch Knocked Up the more I like it. I kind of dismissed it as more of a chick flick at first, and while it might be moreso than 40YOV or Superbad, it really isnt. The strongest/funniest part of the movie for me is the supporting characters - Rudd, Segel, Baruchel. Its pretty much become one of those movies where if its on a premium cable channel, I'll watch for 15 minutes or more. I definitely would put it above FSM.Im assuming his wife is the chick who is Paul Rudd's wife in KU then? Id definitely take her over Heigl even though Heigl looks pretty young for 31 and the other chick probably isnt 40 but looks older. She looks like she'd be more fun though, plus I'll always remember her from Big Daddy when I was 15.......never been a big Heigl fan either.
Yeah, she is in all his movies now - was the drunk chick in 40YO Virgin.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine......Dont remember much from the first 3 X-Men, but all of them were some of my least favorite from this comic book to movie fad. That said, I thought this Wolverine movie was better than all of them. Dont know much about X-Men, so maybe the storyline was better in 1 or all of the first 3, but I found this one to be more interesting with better action. Wouldve liked more time spent on the crew that Wolverine was in with his brother at the beginning, but oh well. Deadpool was pretty sweet. Wouldve like some more screentime for Gambit, even though the kid they had play him seemed kind of douchy. Definitely some cheesy stuff, but its a comic book movie after all. One question for someone who knows more about X-Men than me: are all mutants immortal or something? The opening credits show Wolverine and his brother fighting in every war that America participated in. I didnt realize they were immortal until that......7/10
Hamlet 2.....Dont really find Steve Coogan funny in anything Ive seen him in, but I thought this was decent, had some good laughs. I was 3 sheets to the wind by the time this was over, so I dont remember much, but I do remember laughing a fair amount of times and not being disappointed by the time it finished....5.8/10

Plot:
"The story revolves around the life of boxer 'Irish' Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and trainer-brother **** Eklund (Bale), chronicling their early days on the rough streets of Lowell, Massachusetts, through Eklund's battle with drugs and Ward's eventual world championship in London."
Cast:
- Mark Wahlberg as professional boxer "Irish" Micky Ward
- Christian Bale as his older half brother Dickie Eklund
- Amy Adams as a gritty bartender, Ward's love interest
Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg have been training very hard to get in shape for the film. But the film goes beyond boxing and will be a real lens on Ward's life and his family.

Based on the screenshots they have, not sure how much Bale has been "training"....looks like he lost a ton of weight for it, not as much as The Machinist but Im still not sure thats humanly possible

not at all... based on that, i was expecting something a little different, so the end was still surprising... and there were a lot off differences in the rest of it... i wouldn't have rented it if i thought it would be an issue (they comped us equivalent of a movie and a third for making a bed size mistake, so it was free anyways!
)...hamlet with dogs sounds right...the flashback where you find out how stacy keach got his nickname is disturbing...pretty much all character actors besides keach (himself not exactly ever an A-list leading man), but very good ensemble cast...maybe the best bar fight in a movie ever (vince young has been cast for the remake)... note to self... NEVER ask stacy keach to lick boots (especially when holding a glass of beer)... hopefully that is a sufficiently cryptic and interest-piquing spoiler...

I liked this movie a lot. There's one scene where the authoritarian coach is yelling at Coogan, and Coogan blurts out, "I hate you, daddy! You never supported me!" It's that kind of irreverent humor that endears Hamlet 2.Kenny Powers said:

On another note, I watched Fight Club for like the 10th time last night. I had a friend that actually hadn't seen it. Surprising how this movie might be MORE applicable today than 10 years ago. It's message of the individual versus the collective is very prescient.

Fiancee talked me into watching it this weekend. I knew nothing about this movie from a storyline perspective. I had known about it from all the hype surrounding it, but had no idea what to expect. The visuals at first were pretty cool, and I was into it at the beginning, as I thought the story had some promise.
But the movie was too freakin' long and the storyline was dragged out and boring. The tree-hugger message was a little heavy too, I thought. I'm not a fan of going to a movie and having someone's political views shoved down my throat.
The most entertaining part about this movie was going out to IMDB afterwards to read the message board about this movie. I think there are people out there who think this stuff is real.
Anway, can someone point me to the general area of where the previous Avatar discussions were in this thread? I searched a few random pages around the timeline that I thouhgt they may have been posted, but no luck. I'm interested to see what other FBGs thought.

How to Kill Your Neighbor's Dog
Anybody seen this? 2002 release starring Kenneth Branagh. Saw it a few years ago and loved it, saw it recently and still loved it. There's a reason there aren't many comedies featuring dour British writers with plots that don't wrap up neatly, but I think the dialouge in this one is brilliant and funny, and the sentimentality that shows itself is far more effective than in most serious dramas. Love this movie.

Watched this last night. Solid concept and well-acted....last 20 minutes was pretty powerful (in a subtle way)Question....Saw The Road last night. That was a fun watch
I wanted to shoot myself at the end of it and I'm typically the happy-go-lucky guy in the crowd.
At the very beginning when the father is awakened to see fire outside of his window. Rather than wake up his wife to alert her that the world is basically ending, he rushes to the bathroom to fill up the tub with water. What was that all about? Just a matter that he somehow had enough sense to realize that water supply would soon be ending so he got as much as he could right then?
I hope there's a better explanation cuz doubtful that is what anybody would really be thinking in that situation.
Also is there an explanation of what catastrophe actually happened to make this occur...Worldwide Nuclear explosion?

The original. I either hadn't seen it or it's been too long to remember, I was always a Star Wars guy. Good use of models that still look impressive. Story is engaging but a little overlong and not much pay off at the end. Decent, but really no better than a good episode.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
It's been about a year since I've seen the series, definitely don't watch this if you haven't seen the series because you'll be cheating yourself out of a season and a half of outstanding television. Really no point to this except Lynch gets free reign to get freaky. Show did better with Cooper in the spotlight instead of Laura. I really would have liked to party with her though and it did help me make a little better sense of how her actual relationships with the shrink, James, and Bobby played out. Couple scenes that just gave me the willies and that's why I continue to watch Lynch's material. No way am I even attempting to make sense of it all, the first half hour with Kiefer Sutherland has nothing to do with anything and is completely pointless.

Saw Blade Runner for the 10th+ time the other night...what a beautiful movie. It really has it all and the special effects have held up very well with age (actually until the last few years)...but great none-the-less. Sensational acting for that type of movie (Ford, Almos, Hauer and Hannah). For you young bucks that really like sci-fi, great, great movie if you have not seen it yet.

We were discussing the dearth of good horror movies in the modern era. And someone in my David Lynch thread said that Lynch makes scarier movies than most horror directors. I agree. Lynch is funny, because while I can't say I've ever "enjoyed" a David Lynch movie, I am always drawn to see more of his work.

Have you seen Twin Peaks?Season 1 is done well enough and linear enough that you might actually forget for once you're watching something of Lynch's. I enjoy it above and beyond any of his films, Lost Highway being my favorite.

I read into it and I guess it was Bale who replaced Pitt, who had already replaced Damon.Aronofsky was supposed to direct but left after Pitt did, the new direct David O Russell has turned in some quality work with Flirting with Disaster, Three Kings, and I heart Huckabees.Wahlberg was apparently always going to play Ward, my bad.Sounds like a bit of a cluster #### with a ton of potential.

I loved Twin Peaks. It's one of my favorite all time TV shows. Of Lynch's films, I've seen Mullholland Drive, Lost Highway, Wild At Heart, Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Dune.Weird David Lynch trivia: did you know he turned down a chance to direct The Return of the Jedi?

Flirting with Disaster has always cracked me up, glad I watched this for the first time before I totally hated Ben Stiller. That was an entertaining movie. Watched Up and Ingorious Basterds this weekend.
I really enjoyed both. Very well made films.
QT creates some really wonderful tension in Basterds throughout the whole movie. That said, I actually thought the very few blatantly "Tarantino" touches in it were not necesary (the freeze frames when a character is introduced along with a flashback and the overlay writing pointing out characters as such). Normally I love that but it seemed out of place here. I also thought the soundtrack was one of his weaker efforts. A lot of rehashed sounds from earlier movies.
I've now seen every 2010 nominated Best Picture except for An Education. So far, I'd rank them:

I thought precious had done good acting performances (monique was surprisingly good) but was lacking as a whole. I just didn't think there was a ton of substance there not was it particularly well put together

We may have been through this but not as a separate thread. For those of you that follow this thread, would you watch Shakes the Clown (again if yu have seen it) and weigh in here? It is the kind of movie with way too much to catch the first couple of times through. I have upwards of at least 30 people that have seen it and now have watched it 20+ times easily.

Glad a fellow FBG recommended this recently. A very funny film once it grew on me a bit. I've never really seen anything I can compare it to, maybe the Coen's Ladykillers. Imagine a 3 man team of super detectives at the age of 7, that just forgot to grow up. Now they are 18 and surrounded by adult situations as they take on their big case. Clever, stupid, and genuinely funny. The characters are so naive that it tiptoes the line of being a spoof at times.

Twin Peaks is a lot of fun. While it does get very weird, it could be the most accessible Lynch product.Just realized that the only David Lynch related movies I've seen are The Elephant Man and The Straight Story. And he was only the director for those. Also never saw a single episode of Twin Peaks.

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans......I figured no matter how bad this was, this is the type of role I love seeing Nic Cage in and Herzog directed it, so Id at least be entertained. Liked it more than I expected. At first I wasnt buying Cage's character, but as he spirals more and more out of control, he seems more comfortable with himself and his actions and I thought he just got better and better the entire movie. Easily his best performance since Adaptation. Actual crime/investigation isnt anything all that new, but the subplots and sidestories really carried it for me. Not only did Cage get more interesting as the film went on, but everything did. Liked Val Kilmer, Id rather see him take supporting roles like this than waste his time starring in straight to DVD movies. Wish Michael Shannon had a bigger part. Worth watching just for Cage if you like him when he's actually in a good movie.....7.4/10
