Mean Creek

I usually get into these dark teen brooding types of dramas (Donnie Darko, Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys), but this one really didn't work for me. It's quality filmmaking, but I just couldn't relate to the characters for the most part (don't these kids laugh?), especially in the third act. And the soundtrack was great in bits, but after an entire movie of it, it was just too much. Some excellent acting by both Josh Peck and Rory Caulkin.

oh, see, i really loved this movie. i thought for the most part the actors did really good work despite their ages. the writing gave depth and nuance to characters. they were believably complex kids in a slightly convoluted situation.my review from 2 years ago...

Dont remember much about this movie, but I remember it being decent. Nothing all that good, but not bad either.

Thats about my feelings about it. I thought the fat bully (Josh Peck) looked familiar, I can't believe he grew up to be the skinny drug dealer kid in the Wackness.

Never saw Wackness or Mean Creek but I hope Peck and his fellow cast members don't screw up the remake of Red Dawn because that's one I know I will see.

Rory Caulkin is probably the best child actor I've ever seen. Kind of unfortunate for him that he looks exactly like his brother. One of those films you probably just have to catch in the right move. I couldn't enjoy the cinematography because the shots usually involved the grating, depressing soundtrack. Nice use of digital rather than straightforward, static, shots.

Last Airbender - Had to see for myself. Not as bad as I envisioned, but bad. (The Happening was worse than this though). Lot of money up on the screen, but the script/acting/direction are all DOA. No life in this movie at all, simply an excuse to jump from set piece to set piece and CGI effect to CGI effect. That's not always a bad thing, but here it's just plain boring. Given what I've read about the animated series, this was a real missed opportunity.

I watch a lot of really bad Direct to Video stuff, so I've seen much worse. I had set my bar pretty low for this film, but I'll admit it was higher before I read the reviews.I liked the concept of the story, just not how it was stated or acted.

The story and concept are really cool. It's the dead dull execution that ruined it.

Watched "The Matador" last night. This film had promise, but farily mediocre overall. Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear were good, but this material wasn't very interesting. Hope Davis turns in yet another great acting job. I am thinking I need to watch a lot more of her films.

Using my new search function knowledge I stumbled onto this. I thought this movie was surprisingly very good. One of the bigger surprises of the last few years for a movie I didnt expect to be good or funny at all and was both at an exceedingly high rate.

Barton Fink is great. Hudsucker Proxy and Burn After Reading were not.

I watched The Road, Pirate Radio, and The Soloist recently. Road was good but the book is definitely better. Pirate Radio is very good. Soloist was pretty meh, although it's a somewhat interesting story.

I haven't seen Fink since it was released in 1991, so I might feel different about it now.

It is a decent addition to the horror/zombie genre, but not nearly as good as the first one. For lack of a better description, I just thought the movie was 'ugly'. I guess I didn't like the fact that the kids were involved so much in the movie or that the makers of the movie kept trying to hard to make the dad seem like an uber-zombie or something. Slightly above average for the genre, but I don't think I'd watch it again.

The Lovely Bones: This movie really drives home the importance of post production film editing because whoever was in charge of it for this film (I'm looking at you Peter Jackson) was horrible. This movie had an interesting enough premise (many film approach the premise of the dead viewing life from the other side) but it just seemed to have no idea what it wanted to be.

Three scenes jump out as examples of this:

2) Susan Sarrandon as the zany mother-in-law coming to stay with the family. - Okay wtf? Did I suddenly end up in a romantic comedy with Hugh Grant and J-Lo? This sequence had no place in this movie.

3) Ronan's anger in the afterlife influencing Wahlberg and making him pursue Tucci with the baseball bat. While I like how they resolved that scene the fact that Ronan, who previously suggested no remorse at her death, A) was now angry at Tucci & B) her mood influencing the living were just sprung upon the audience out of nowhere. Zero development of these premises prior to that scene.

Bonus #4) So now she can not only be seen by the living, which I thought was well established early in the film, but she can possess them too? And she decides to not go to heaven because she has business to take care of on earth then it turns out that business is to kiss the British tool (our happy Hollywood ending) instead of y'know, draw some attention to the guy who is dumping her body in the sinkhole. Sure we get to satisfy our need for justice (revenge/blood lust) a little later but the wheels completely fell off for me at this point.

Ultimately I left this film thinking "What the hell was that supposed to be about?" and "It could have been 30 minutes shorter too."

Wanted to like the film, but ended up disappointed.

I liked it. Thought Morgan Freeman was amazing as Mandela. Interesting bit of trivia I learned. Freeman really wanted to do a bio movie on Mandela and had been trying for years with a partner but they couldn't make it work. Eastwood then approached him with the Invictus idea. Freeman went to meet Mandela to get his blessing and started off by saying "We've been trying so hard to make the bio project work, but we think we've found another way that illustrates who you are..." and before Freeman could finish Mandela says "Ahh, the World Cup".

I look at 28 Days/Weeks later like I do Alien/Aliens. The first movie is a horror film and the second is action flick. Hard to really compare the two since they're different genres.But then, I play mental tricks on myself all the time.

IIRC, The only time it showed them together in the same room was during Wiebe's third attempt at the record and then he only casually strolled by when Weibe was playing.

Like I said, it's been awhile but what exactly is so funny about this?After some research it seems that Mitchell played Wiebe head-to-head about a year before the event depicted in the doc so I'll presume they spoke.

Yeah, that's it........but I got a better color scheme than that yellow shirt. It's a blue ringer T. Most of the time nobody knows what it means, but every once in a while, somebody will come up out of nowhere and want to have their picture taken with me.

Windy City Heat

I watched this because I think dollar for dollar Bob Goldthwaite is possibly making the best films in the industry right now. "Sleeping Dogs Lie" was brilliant and "World's Greatest Dad" was very thoughtful and provocative. Bobcat makes you think about important things, no matter how uncomfortable. That he sometimes enhances the discomfort to a level that many viewer find the film unwatchable is his flaw as well as his genius.

I do not know if I have ever had a film make me more uncomfortable than than Windy City Heat. Its basically a 90 minute practical joke, where everyone in the film, except for the lead (Caravello) is in on the joke. The things he is put though made me shudder and its cruelty almost made it unwatchable, even for me. What finally saved it, is that I imagined his friend/antagonist (Don Barris) and Melvin Scupper and Caravello as LHUCKS. That really made it work for me and I was able to watch it through to the end.

Other things that I found surprising was Jimmy Kimmel co-wrote it and Dane Cook is actually funny in his limited role.

It is a decent addition to the horror/zombie genre, but not nearly as good as the first one. For lack of a better description, I just thought the movie was 'ugly'. I guess I didn't like the fact that the kids were involved so much in the movie or that the makers of the movie kept trying to hard to make the dad seem like an uber-zombie or something. Slightly above average for the genre, but I don't think I'd watch it again.

I look at 28 Days/Weeks later like I do Alien/Aliens. The first movie is a horror film and the second is action flick. Hard to really compare the two since they're different genres.

Except in the latters case the sequel is better than the original.

I agree with the minister here. Alien is such a dramatically different movie than Aliens it is really unfair to compare them. Aliens is a great action movie and is more humorous and engaging (as well as being one of the most quotable movies ever) but Alien is one of the most terrifying movies I have ever seen. Alien is a straight laced horror drama with no comic relief (ala Bill Paxton) and it creates a mood that is unparalleled in the genre.Plus you have Ridley Scott v James Cameron.

I hesitate to make a choice as to which was the better film. It appears IMDB is deadlocked too, both get an 8.5 on over 165,000 votes.

Agreed.It's been awhile but I thought the movie showed the first time Wiebe and Mitchell were even in the same room together? Was that stated or only implied?

The fact that Wiebe and Mitchell may get along doesn't change the fact that Mitchell ducked Wiebe during the competition in Florida.

Being familiar with the film, this is a humorous sentence to me. I feel like maybe you need to take a minute to compose yourself.

I wasn't offended just curious about what I may have missed.There are a few articles floating around about the factual errors in the film but I don't see enough to change my opinion of this film.
