Also, if that Miles Davis film ever happens where he is supposed to play Miles, thats a big opportunity to impress and IMO he'd nail that role.
This goes to what we were talking about: Miles Davis was an angry, charismatic guy. And I don't think Cheadle has the range to pull this off.

Haven't seen it. It didn't look very good. Did you like it?

Yeah, I thought it was well worth watchingPetey Greene was an interesting guyAnd I thought Cheadle was excellent

Coffee & Cigarettes

Interesting concept but hit and miss, and more miss than hit.

The Bill Murray and the Wu-Tang dudes were very funny. A well written and well acted vignette.

Meg and Jack White were okay.

The rest were kind of meh, and dragged on too long.

Watched a couple more movies last night:

The Book of Eli:

It was OK. I liked the basic premise of the movie, but more times than not it toed the cheesy line (especially the very end with the chick). Still not sure how I feel about the big revelation about the Eli character either - thinking back there were times it made sense and other times it wouldn't. Don't think I feel the need to watch it again to see if it makes sense though.

Baby Mama:

Saw this on the rack at the library. Figured it would be terrible, but I'm usually in the mood to watch Tina Fey for an hour and a half, so I took a shot. I was pleasantly surprised. Silly for sure, but there were enough moments that made the viewing worth while- I'd probably watch this again over other recent comedies like FSM and Knocked Up. (of course I have a thing for both Fey and Poehler) You could do a lot worse if your s/o brings this home.

I'm going to brace myself for an onslaught as I type this:

Don Cheadle is a very average actor.

Cheadle has appeared in several good movies, so there's always something to enjoy when he's onscreen. But he doesn't have much range, he isn't charismatic, and I've never seen him in a role that lived up to all the hype.
Completely agree.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo: Pretty good. The version I had was dubbed which really sucks and missed out on a few of the things that were written in Swedish (what did she tattoo on the guys stomach?). Liked the basic premise of the movie but really hated the ending. 3/5

Cop Out: If you really like Tracy Morgan, watch it. I thought I liked him going into it (love 30 Rock) but was sick of the guy halfway through. I guess he is just better in really small doses. 2/5

Book of Eli

How could a post apocalyptic action film with Denzel, Oldman, and Stevenson be this bad? Very cool cinematography made it feel like it was something straight out of the Dark Tower series, and two very cool gun fights is about all it has going for it. The excellent sound in the gunfights was something I hadn't experienced since Open Range. But seriously, it sucks and the third act is absolute garbage....

The "revelation" I had kind of figured out, but I didn't know it was going to be to the extent that he was always blind. How is he able to look everyone in the eye then when he talks to them? The hints were always talking about smelling things from a distance, during the gun fight at the beginning he never shot first only returned fire, when he approached the house he claimed he didn't see the no trespassing sign, and he was always worried about those darn sunglasses.

*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close();2/5

I thought I would love this film, I was left completely empty. All of these guys phone in their performances, just stupid.

Gone in 60 Seconds (1974)

Really not much like the remake at all besides being about stealing cars and a chase scene with Eleanor at the end. The chase is really the only thing worth watching it for, the rest really isn't that interesting at all and it ends abruptly. But the chase is awesome and is at least a half hour of pedal to the floor stunts. The Slo-mo jump was really corny.

2/5

I figured once they tracked down the duplicate name of the daughter who left for Australia, it was a little easier. That, and the guy was under the assumption that she was killed and the murderer was sending him the flowers.

The tat said something like " I am a sadist and a rapist" or something like that. Wasn't there a way to switch to subtitles? Can't remember the last time that wasn't an option on the disc.

The movie was pretty bad. But mostly, these two ladies are far funnier than this material.

I seem to be the only guy that loved this movie.

Frozen River

A tale of mothers and the desperate things they do to keep their families intact. Thanks to those in this thread who recommended this movie. Seriously. This is a beautiful, haunting movie. I loved it. One of the best movies I've seen in years. Some in our society will rail against immigrants for being in this country illegally. But when you are fighting for your family's survival, immigration laws are irrelevant. Brilliant story. Kudos for the casting, as well. Almost every character was pitch perfect.
  :goodposting:
I caught an interesting double feature this weekend. Saturday night I saw Winter's Bone (still in theaters) and Sunday it was Frozen River. In many ways these are remarkably similar movies. I agree with the consensus about Frozen River and I can say without qualification that if you enjoyed FR you should definitely check out Winter's Bone.

I am always impressed when movies feel so real that you question if you are watching actors on location or real people living their lives on film and Winter's Bone definitely felt like the latter. Jennifer Lawrence delivers an excellent performance as 17 going on 40 year old de facto head of her household (in just about the most destitute setting imaginable. The family in FR are Rockefellers by comparison) caring for two siblings and an ill mother, while she must try to find her drug dealing father who skipped out on his bail bond after putting up the family home as collateral on the bond. Lawrence's performance is all the more impressive considering she was 18 years old when it was filmed.

Dale Dickey and (maybe) John Hawkes deliver Oscar worthy performances as well as the set and costume directors. It truly felt like watching the lives of a small disenfranchised community in the Ozarks that most of us probably do not even imagine exists.

The supporting cast is excellent, and I enjoyed the little Deadwood reunion (Hawkes and Garrett Dillahunt), and the appearance by Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer from Twin Peaks). While not without flaws the story is very tight and well told.

I don't normally do the rating thing so I won't start now but this comes pretty close to being a perfect movie IMO.

While they are both excellent movies I enjoyed Winter's Bone more than Frozen River (again they are very similar) and I don't think it is because I saw WB first. I felt FR had a few minor issues with pacing and came dangerously close to being cliche at a few points (at the very least there were a couple points in the movie that I found overly convenient ways to advance the plot). This is not a knock on FR, I truly enjoyed, and strongly recommend it.

Completely agree, and I actually said if I were to recommend Cheadle's best performances outside of the well known Hotel Rwands, its Talk To Me and Devil In A Blue Dress. He'd be great as Miles

Started this last night. I seem to recall some positive reviews for this movie, but so far this a perfunctory police drama with several cliches I've seen before. Does it get better after the first 40 minutes?

I just saw this and I think I like it but I'm not exactly sure.
Liked the beginning, but petered out there at the end.

Watched, Observed and Report this weekend. Basically a dark comedy version of Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Multiple parallels and similarities between the two but much, much darker.

How does this happen? Does one studio hear about another making a mall security guard movie and say, "Hey, remember that crappy script we saw a few years ago? Kevin James owes us a couple movies on his contract, right? Let's green light this."

Saw this about a month ago. Pretty bad. This may sound weird coming from me but there was also a lot of gratuitous swearing. It was to the point of distraction.

It grew on me the 2nd time I saw it since I knew what was coming and it wasnt the type of movie the previews would lead you to believe, but still no better than average.

I agree that the first 1/2 is better than the second half.

Brooklyn's Finest....from beginning to end, struck me as a movie where the parts where better than the whole, with a "tie the story together" scenario you could see coming to boot. Cinematography and lighting make it look like Fuqua's 2nd son after Training Day, but the characterization is totally different. Agree the most with Cosjobs and Hooters reviews on it, but what cop movie doesnt have the cliched bad cop, old cop, or undercover cop in it that is any good? You could call it cliche, but its really just part of the subgenre. Since we were on the Cheadle discussion, I thought he was solid as usual in this, but Ethan Hawke was the best of the bunch. Gere made the most of his time with the weakest part, though. All 3, and Snipes and Omar to a lesser degree, made the movie better than it was. The character development was great, but storyline didnt quite do it justice. When youre halfway through and none of the stories coalesce, its clear its not going to be a great movie, but still one where all 3 main characters keep it interesting and above the rim. Wire clientele definitely didnt hurt. Dont understand the complaints calling the movie crap because although youve seen some things here before (like in 75% of movies that are coming out these days), strong characters and acting will always allow me to enjoy a movie - especially one like this ....7.4/10

Last night I watched Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

(for the first time I should add). I am sad that I didn't see this one when it came out. There were some really funny parts, but overall it suffered from the 80s syndrome - when I watch a movie from that era I hadn't seen before it comes off as cheesy, but if I had seen it before, it has a built in nostalgia factor that pushes it to greatness. Don't get me wrong - I liked it and was glad I finally watched it, but there was just something holding me back from loving it.

Winter's Bone was tremendousBest movie of the year IMO
It's hard to argue with that. It's still in the forefront of my consciousness and it will no doubt be the measuring stick I use for every other movie I see this year.I can't imagine it not getting a lot of consideration for best picture but I can easily imagine us discussing next year how it got robbed by a big budget picture with lots of star power.

Boondock Saints Hilarious. I was thoroughly entertained. Dafoe just kills it in this one. His Paul Smecker is a great character. Smecker and "the funny man" make this movie. I also liked the use of music and religion in this one. This movie was fun.

Great movie and a very disappointing sequel.I strongly encourage anyone who enjoyed Boondock to check out the documentary "Overnight" which follows the writer/director of Boondock, Troy Duffy who became an overnight success when BS was picked up by the studio. Duffy couldn't handle the instant success and proceeded to burn every single bridge and completely alienate himself from the entire Hollywood scene. Dude was a huge train wreck and the documentary, which started as a misguided attempt to document his meteoric rise, is highly entertaining as it ends up as a cautionary tale about how not to handle success in Hollywood.

Oy. What a waste of time. This is the perfect example of a movie where almost everything is in place, but without a good script, the movie is pointless. The actors, sets, art direction are all fine. With movies, story and script are critical. And this script is amateurish.

I guess I could see that. The actual material is something that's easier to relate to now and find funnier than other movies of the time like Revenge of the Nerds or Breakfast Club.

 A few of my friends really thought the Ugly Truth was funny. I thought Butler was almost painful to watch with the over the top male chauvinist routine. Not a lot of upside here.

Gerard Butler was excellent in one of my favorite movies (Dear Frankie), and he was very good in 300. But this guy is wasting his talent on a lot of romantic comedy bull####.
