Took a break last night and rewatched Pineapple Express.

For my money, the best comedy in the last few years. Sure it breaks down into a cheesy action movie towards the end, but even that has funny parts. (What's down there, a ####### Rancor?). Franco absolutely kills in this movie. Where movies like The Hangover had 0 'rewatchability' for me, PE has grown on me more on repeat viewings.

that's Major League II, which sucked rocks

Bull Durham was 1988

Major League was 1989
Yup. KP has his Major League's mixed up.The first one, while it has it's cheesy sports cliche theme of a bunch of rejects make good, is friggin' hysterical.

Pedro Cerrano: Bats, they are sick. I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid. I ask Jobu to come, take fear from bats. I offer him cigar, rum. He will come.

Eddie Harris: You know you might think about taking Jesus Christ as your savior instead of fooling around with all this stuff.

Pedro Cerrano: Jesus, I like him very much, but he no help with curveball.

Eddie Harris: You trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?

Jackie Brown - Very, very good. Not QT's best but it was a different side to Tarentino. I much more close to the vest movie. Not as mant bang bang shootouts and more meat and tension. I really liked this movie and the soundtrack was outstanding.

Saw 2012 last night. What an insulting movie. I love epic disaster flicks and crazy special effects but I can't get by the absolute disregard to even attempts to maintain credibility and some semblance of continuity.

I enjoyed it, surprisingly. I made fun of it a lot before it came out and expected utter crap when I watched it. It was fun though and had about every movie cliche ever in it. I know it was bad but it ended up being a lot more fun than I expected. The man crush I have for John Cusack doesn't help.

I'll try a few more and mix them into my list. Scanning over the lists here and in the other thread I posted, a lot of them seem to be comedy movies, which is always hit or miss with me. Kingpin is a top 5 comedy movie for me, but I don't think it's a sports movie. I'll mix in a couple of the 'serious' ones and report back. I don't believe there hasn't been mention of the best football movie of the bunch yet: Varsity Blues
Kingpin is a hoot. I think it qualifies as a sports movie.
Kingpin was a great movie. Bill Murray's hair deserves special mention in that one.

I wont argue that its Tarantino's best, but it definitely is my favorite movie by him.

I love this movie. Lots of good things in the movie, including Robert Deniro's last great iconic performance.

Though not as good and a different kind of animal, Id say his role in Meet the Parents/####ers is pretty iconic.More iconic that Jackie Brown actually since a lot of people have never seen JB. DeNiro is a big reason why JB is my favorite Tarantino movie.

I can completely understand why JB would be someone's favorite QT movie. He doesn't do his normal schtick of different time lines, Mexican standoffs and loooooooonnnnnnnnggggg running dialogue. He holds back just enough to create a really great tension in the bag switch scene. You never knew what turn you were going to take.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - I was hoping it would be more roll on the ground laughing funny but it was good none the less. Michael Caine and Steve Martin had a great chemistry and the one-upsmanship of each character kept getting better and better.

Conversations with Other Women - Indie flick in every sense of the term. Operated throughout the entirety of the movie with split screen which didn't bother me a bit. Very reminiscent of Before Sunset and I enjoyed this movie quite a bit thanks to great performances by Aaron Eckhart and Helena Bonhem Carter.

I really like both of these movies. :2cents:

Hurt Locker - I agree with the common feeling on this board that it was over-rated. A couple of intense scenes...the snipers in the desert was one...but overall didn't keep me that interested. Main character was overdone.

How did they get Ralph Fiennes to make an appearance? That was random.

Same with Guy Pearce and David MorseAlthough it tailed of halfway-3/4 through, it kept me interested the whole time

Wife thinks it's absolutely stupid - I wonder if it's a never smoked pot thing.

12 Monkeys - Don't know why I had never watched this before, it's right up my alley. I thought Brad Pitt was great in this, while Bruce Willis kind of annoyed me. I liked how they tied things together, and there was never really any huge confusion with respect to the time travel angle (which is hard in a time travel movie). Good stuff.

4/5
Back in the days when Madeline Stowe was hot. Now she has so much collagen in her lips it looks like she was punched in the mouth.
she's gorgeous in Revenge. absolutely gorgeous
Vice President of the Flat Chested Broads Society (FCBS) as well
Does that make her President ?

Robert Forster was absolutely fantastic in that movie. DeNiro's character was good, but his role was pretty minor. Hard to call that role iconic imo.

I hate the Meet the ####ers movies, so I didn't include them for this discussion.

Robert Forster proved that Hollywood woefully underused his talents in that movie. If DeNiro had only two minutes in Jackie Brown, It'd still be the best thing he's done in about 15 years.

Moon: I kept waiting for something to happen... and waiting... and waiting... then I fell asleep. Woke up to see the last 2 minutes of it and thought I'd been asleep for a good half hour. Skipped backed to the last part I saw and realized I was asleep for about 5 minutes. What a boring movie. 1/5

Clash of the Titans: Visually awesome. Not too much good other than that but nothing really bad either. Decent popcorn flick if you're watching it on Blu-Ray and have good sound. No chance I'd watch it any other way. 2.5/5

Wife skpped town so I rented a bunch of movies over the weekend...

"It's Complicated" - Very entertaining in a "Something's Got to Give" or "as good as it gets" kind of way. Older folks love story but some funny moments. (Wife was in town to watch this one) 3.5 out of 5 if you have a lady friend. a little less if you're a dude watching it by yourself.

"Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call NO" - My brother suggested this. I thought it was good, not great. 2.5 out of 5

"Book of Eli" - 4 out of 5. Really liked this. In fact, most "end of the world" movies seem to try to hard to be deep. I actually wished this one had gotten a bit deeper. Good action flick with some nice plot devices (like the location of the ending place). It started with a few elements of Waterworld going on with Oldman's crew but I thought it was the best flick I watched all weekend.

"Green Zone" - I really like movies in the middle east but this one didn't hold my interest very well. About halfway through I started missing the point of what was going on (I was doing some work on my laptop) and didn't feel the need to rewind and figure it out. Mostly I just wanted it to end before Mad Men started.

"The Informant" - Started this one pretty late in the evening (after Mad Men ended) and I was pretty drunk. But from what i recall it was pretty funny and interesting til I fell asleep about 45 minutes in. I'll re-watch it today.

DVR's Zombie Land and Terminator Salvation this weekend. Need to carve out some time for a good double feature.
Then you need to carve out Terminator Salvation.
Bummer. Nothing redeeming at all?
T2 is one of my top 5 favorite movies. In light of that, I even enjoyed T3.TS is such an mess I don't even know where to start.
TS had GREAT potential. It even starts down the right path before turning in to a pile of dog doo.

I don't know which bothered me more, the fact that the humans had an open air, operational base (complete with floodlights) in what was practically a suburb of Machineville, the 15 minute hand-to-hand human vs. terminator battle, or Christian Bale's performance.

I think it might have been the horrible CGI Arnold that put the cherry on top.

My Neighbor Totoro 5/5

I'm working my way through Hayao Miyazaki's films and I am pretty much done.

Totoro is one of five of his that earned maximum points from me. He has a gift for noticing behavior, especially in children, and capturing it in his films. I don't think I have ever seen another director who manages to display pure joy. It's there in Ponyo, Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service, and it's hinted at in other stories.

I love how he doesn't necessarily put villains into his stories. Many are simply snapshots of the struggles that we face growing up. He has a wonderful understanding of the human condition.

His female characters are all strong and captivating.

Every time I enter his imaginative worlds, I wish that they really existed. To have people behave in that way instead of lying, cheating, killing and hurting others. As such, they are all uplifting experiences and make me want to revisit them often.

Disney needs to give North American releases to everything Miyazaki has ever done as soon as possible. Pixar is the only thing that comes close to Studio Ghibli and John Lasseter worships Miyazaki's work for good reason and regularly uses it for inspiration.

Although these films have children as the main protagonists, everyone can enjoy them. I'm 48 and they touch me deeply.
I have been beating the drum for Miyazaki ever since I saw Spirited Away (perhaps my favorite animated movie of all time, and a strong contender for inclusion on my desert island movie list) and have devoured almost everything he has made since then.Miyazaki is the Japanese Walt Disney and people, particularly those with children need to expose themselves to his work. Seriously, this guy is a treasure and I think people are doing themselves and their children a disservice by not watching his films.

Ever since his first feature film, Nausicca & The Valley of the Wind was butchered in the editing room prior to it's American release (HBO only) Miyazaki has insisted on a no editing clause for foreign translations and the quality of the voice work in the dubbed versions has been excellent. Nausicca, which was originally released in America as Warriors of the Wind was re-released in it's proper form and is a phenomenal film.

The films I think are absolute must see quality:

Spirited Away

Nausicca & The Valley of the Wind

My Neighbor Totoro

Princess Mononoke (this is by far his most violent film and is probably not suitable for young children)

Kiki's Delivery Service

Porco Rosso

Castle in the Sky

Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo are also quite good but I don't put them in the class as those listed above.
I agree with your list and all should be seen. I love Ponyo though and would still want to own Howl's Moving Castle.Other Studio Ghibli films are worth a look too. Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns both have heart and imagination. Grave of the Fireflies has to be one of the saddest and most touching films I have ever seen.

What about the original The Longest Yard KP?What's the complaint there?
Never seen that either. I think I realized awhile ago that I never seem to love sports movies, so I probably haven't seen as many as most around here. It's not to the level that I hate them, but I can't remember seeing won that I thought was great. People ##### about Titanic - "well, you know the boat's going to sink". Also works for probably 95% of sports movies - you watch Miracle, and you know WTF is going to happen at the end. I just always find them meh b/c like jdog stated, they are full of cliches, and they are predictable.
I would put The Longest Yard very close to the top of my all time best sports movies list. I am having trouble coming up with one I enjoy more. Rocky, which is in most ways not cliche, comes close. I was serious about Horse Feathers too, but as a Marx Brothers movie it has obvious appeal for other reasons, ditto for M*A*S*H. They're both great but not truly movies centered around sports.I think TLY is definitely worth checking out as a true sports comedy. Although I think Major League is hysterical so what do I know?ETA: Not sure I see many similarities between Major League and Bull Durham.
I would put Seabiscuit at the top of my sports movies list. Seven Oscar nominations, but it was released in 2003 when LOTR was rewarded for the work done in the entire trilogy. Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper were outstanding and I think Seabiscuit is one of the most underrated dramas ever released. The racing scenes look and sound fantastic on blu-ray too.

Oh I absolutely think it's worth owning all of them.Grave of the Fireflies isn't Miyazaki but Studio Ghibli did the animation. I am not sure if a more powerful and heart wrenching animated film has ever been made. Apparently there have been two live action versions produced but I have not seen either...yet.

A couple comments from the GotFF Wiki page:

Roger Ebert considers it to be one of the most powerful anti-war movies ever made. Animation historian Ernest Rister compares the film to Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List and says, "it is the most profoundly human animated film I've ever seen."[2]

While the 3yo napped, I popped in The Damned United today.

Didn't know anything about the guy or the story, but really liked the movie. Sheen is a hell of an actor - I recognized from Frost/Nixon and he was great in that as well. Looked up his other movies, and didn't know he was Lucian from the Underworld movies too. Quite the mix of movies on his resume. Anyway - agree with others around here that it was one of the better movies of last year.

I lived through that time and it was an extremely realistic story. Sheen was Brian Clough and Colm Meaney captured Don Revie well. Sheen is great as Tony Blair in The Queen too.

Good to know - I read that it was a fictionalized account, so I am curious how many liberties they took while telling the story. Still haven't seen The Queen, but heard multiple times that he was great in that too.

For sure. As was Pam Grier. DeNiro's role was definitely more more of a support for them and SLJ, but I thought his was great in JB and had enough screentime where his role was more than a minor one.
