Recently viewed movie thread - Rental Edition (6 Viewers)

28 Weeks Later Second time I watched it, liked it better this time. Great opening sequence and then standard zombie movie. Robert Caryle really bothered me the first time, not as much this time around
 
Up in the Air Loved it until the twist. That was just wrong.

But Clooney was good. Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga were also good. The Cameos by Zach Galifianakis and JK Simmons were classic. Great humor and a good look into Corporate America

 
Finally watched "Crazy Heart" last night. Aside from a great acting job by Jeff Bridges there wasn't much to it. :kicksrock:

 
Wife and I took our daughter and her friend to a Drive-in on Friday to see 'The Other Guys'... Plenty of :excited: moments but not enough to make me want to watch it again... 3 out of 5..

I am really starting to hate trailers that have parts that don't exist in the movie.. There were parts where I was sitting there going.. wait for it.. wait for it.. and then Nothing.. :goodposting:

Also, I understand it was used to move the plot along but I felt they took two of the characters out way too early.

The Other Guys - Pretty funny. I don't think it is Ferrell's best and certainly isn't as quotable as Anchorman or Old School.

Fat Boy and Little Man - Simply fantastic all around. I can not believe how far down Joffe has come and the fact that he tries to defend the work he has done since his run in the 80's is laughable. I don't understand how he went from The Killing Fields, The Mission and Fat Man and Little Boy to Elisha Cuthbert in a cage and an episode of Undressed. This movie was very moving to me and all the actors were great. John Cusack, John C. McGinley and Paul Newman are all fantastic.

 
The Art of the Steal:

Fantastic documentary about something I am sad to say I've never heard of before watching this - the Barnes Foundation. Interesting story about a man who became rich and decided to spend his money on paintings other people seemed to think were crap. Turns out he was right and to say the least his collection is worth a little bit of money. After his death the struggle started over what to do with the paintings and how to go about it. Don't want to yap too much about it or give too much away, but I was fascinated on many levels with this story and would highly recommend this to the documentary viewers out there.

I've been waiting for a good mindless comedy to come out on DVD and it looks like I'll have to wait a little longer...Hot Tub Time Machine was horrible. 1.5/5

I have two kids. After you've watched all the good Disney moves 178 times each, all the secondary movies 68 times, and Blue' Clues until you yourself are blue in the face, you move on to Robert Rodriguez movies (although the first Spy Kids was all right).
 
Just watched Public Enemies tonight. Average at best. Thought that it was poorly constructed - not at all clear what the director was aiming for. I'm generally a huge Michael Mann fan, but this was not his best work.

 
The Joneses: A great satire of what seems to be pretty common place these days; keeping up the Joneses. Duchovny and Moore were pretty good as the "parents of a family" who are placed into a high-end community to market new products. I was expecting a little more comedy out of it (there was little to none) but it was good nonetheless (except for a horrible ending). 3.5/5

Big fan of William Friedkin thrillers and this one didn't disappoint. Agreed with jdogg that I didn't care for any of the main characters, but I still didn't mind watching how it played out. Friedkin had a habit of making his material unpredictable with enough surprises to keep me interested. Exposition was a little slow setting up the characters, the plot doesn't actually begin till about the half way point.

I saw this last week. There were a few laughs but it was pretty uneven.And yes it is a movie about a hot tub that is a time machine so you're not expecting perfection but nobody attached to the film noticed that the kid is supposed to be 20 years old but he was conceived in 1986?

I can't search for it since it's only 3 letters (lame) and I'm not going to scour through 300 pages of this thread. I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard some mixed reviews, and wanted to see what anyone here thinks of it. I've heard from "amazing" all the way down to "horrible".

I watched the first 15 minutes or so. It's cheaply constructed but seemed to have some good ideas. I've been meaning to finish it.

If you keep in mind that it's an independent film with the budget of about a buck fitty, I think you'll enjoy it.I thought it "worked" and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I agree. I liked it too. Very enjoyable
 
We were bored last night so we got around to watching Jennifers Body. Good Lord what a steaming pile of crap that was.

2/10. Would have been a 1 if not for the lezbo kissing scene.

 
Ride the High Country(1962) - 3.5/5. Peckinpah western. enjoyed it. reminded me a little of Unforgiven.

My Name is Trinity(1971) - 4/5. Spaghetti western. fun movie.

Lonely Are the Brave(1962) - 4.5/5. Kirk Douglas said this was his favorite. I cant disagree.

also watched a few "banned" films...



Cannibal Holocaust(1980) - 3.5/5. pretty good story to go along with the gore-fest. before Blair Witch, there was this...



In the Realm of the Senses(1976) - 4/5. lots of sex. based on a true story. i dig it.

Salo(1976) -3.5/5. holy ####. pretty disturbing. powerful people can be cruel and sadistic.

This movie is great, but ####ed up. I would recommend more people checking this out - as you stated, it's a gory but still has the Blair Witch feel. If I remember correctly, when it came out the director got hauled to court b/c people thought he actually killed a couple of the characters on screen b/c it looked so real.

 
Just watched a French film about life in the immigrant suburbs of Paris. One of my summer interns is from outside Paris, in the same suburb where this film took place, so it offered a personal connection. But it was also well regarded - the director received Best Director at Cannes in 1995 - and I found the film quite interesting. It did, however, drag a bit in the middle. Either way, would highly recommend.

say this movie a couple years ago, was an interesting watch. Though my viewing experience was hindered as I struggled valiantly to read the subtitles since there were coloured white and it's a black and white film.
 
Watched Drag Me to Hell last night. Didn't realize this was Sam Raimi until I started watching and said to my wife, "this has to be Sam Raimi".

Typical Raimi fair - camp, over the top violence, cheezy acting. It was okay.

 
Serpico

Amazing how much energy Pacino brought to each one of his iconic roles, while portraying characters that are completely unique. Loved Lumet's directing and all of the throw away lines Pacino mutters. A deserved classic.

If you haven't seen it, the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode where Charlie plays Serpico for the entire episode is epic.

Seen it, but after watching it, I'll need to see it again. I forgot all about that.

one of those films that is more to be admired than loved. it could have been friedkin's "apocalypse now" in many ways...

I strongly agree with this. I will probably never watch the first hour of it again. But once they load up the trucks it becomes much more entertaining. The tree clearing scene was especially awesome.

:lmao: I'm just sick of Cera as a lead which pretty much ruined it for me. Put someone else in that role and I'd have liked it a lot more.

 
Haven't had a TV, or even time to watch one, since the fire- but caught a couple of movies a couple of weekends ago while staying at a friend's place.

I work with a woman named Zac (sic) and always call her name out ala Roberto Benigni from Down By Law (Jarmusch). Seeing it again, I think for the first time since seeing it originally in the theaters, reminded me of how much I loved it- Jarmusch frames each scene so beautifully from a visual standpoint, it's easy to get past a pretty flimsy plot. Seriously- it's almost as if he story-boarded each shot and then filled in a plot afterwards… fantastic use of black and white too. Really loved the final scene- mash-up of Robert (bob) Frost poem and a little bit of the final scene from the Third Man (another fave) with Waits and Lurie walking off down divergent roads. John Lurie carries over his early 80s Lower East Side hip-cat routine from Stranger than Paradise and Tom Waits does his lovable loser act with Benigni hamming it up (surprise). Probably my favorite of Jarmusch's movies. Great sound-track/score too.

I still love, love, love Tati's Mr Hulot's Holiday. He was able to create and flesh out characters with almost only sound affects and body language more fully than most recent movies do with dialogue and plot. The dining room door alone probably had more depth than most Michael Bay characters. Hulot is one of my all-time favorite comic characters and this is one of my favorite comedies… I'm fumbling with words to describe my love for this one…
