I'm just sick of Cera as a lead which pretty much ruined it for me. Put someone else in that role and I'd have liked it a lot more.

Cera-lite (Jesse Eisenberg) is even worse.

I don't think Cera is horrible, he is just played out. Same shtick in Arrested Development, Superbad, Juno, YIR and Nick and Norah. Eisenberg will reach that point in a couple more movies but I can only recall two of his (Zombieland/Adventureland) so he really doesn't bother me yet.

Oh yeah… also saw 500 Days of Summer and came away mildly happy despite the lead doing his best to channel Keanu Reaves' performance and character from The Lake House (… yeah, I saw that thing… ). Liked that the characters were allowed to be imperfect. Also liked the cutaway song and dance routine, despite the millionth rip-off blue-birdy from How to Get A Head in Advertising. I still don't get how any old person in a movie gets to live in beautiful, huge spaces and drive fancy cars.

Watched Drag Me to Hell last night. Didn't realize this was Sam Raimi until I started watching and said to my wife, "this has to be Sam Raimi".

Typical Raimi fair - camp, over the top violence, cheezy acting. It was okay.

Amazing how much energy Pacino brought to each one of his iconic roles, while portraying characters that are completely unique. Loved Lumet's directing and all of the throw away lines Pacino mutters. A deserved classic.

Pacino is always amazing - especially in his classic films. But this movie had some problems. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I remember thinking that this movie was way overhyped.

Really kind of amusing that a character like that goes around with his reputation and everyone he meets can't go 5 minutes without doing something corrupt. It's a morality tale, it doesn't have to make perfect sense as long as the protagonist makes his point.

It was based on a true story. I liked it, and they did some interesting things with the film, like starting with the end.

I'm sure I am in a tiny minority, as most people really like Serpico.

Had some tense moments and I appreciate the 'trippier' type of horror movie with the dream sequences, etc.. Overall I was just expecting a little more. Ending was cheesy, which also left me with a bad taste in my mouth after turning off the movie. Good and worth seeing in context of other movies of the time, but overall not a great movie - even in the horror realm. Probably 6-7/10 here.

Went to see Salt with the g/f last night. Not too bad, but Angelina needs to cut out the whole anorexia thing she has going. She was a great woman action star in the Tomb Raider movies, as far as women action hero's can get, but in this one she was dreadfully thin. Hard to get past someone being built like that and being an action star. Decent movie, good action, decent twists.

IMDB says they both started in 1999, and Cera had numerous film/TV credits by the end of 2000 whereas Eisenberg had just one. As far as i'm concerned, they both play the same character in eveything i've seen either of them in. Cera's character is usually a more humorous version of the character Eisenberg plays. I haven't seen Eisenberg in a non-comedy film yet, but I'll see how he does in the upcoming Social Network. Another thing worth mentioning is that Michael Cera is 5 years younger than Eisenberg.

Youth In Revolt: Getting really sick of Micheal Cera. His 'alter ego' in this movie was great but good lord is his regular shtick played out. A couple hilarious scenes in an otherwise forgettable movie. 1.5/5

I thought YiR was very good. Great cast, great writing. Looking forward to the sequel.

Considering the changes they made, it's hard to see them going forward with Revolting Youth.I don't think the book is a classic or anything, but the movie totally gets the conceit of Francois wrong. Nick Twisp is already a genuine, honest-to-God sociopath in the book. Francois doesn't make him that way, and never really achieves the kind of "separate character status" that he does in the movie. In fact the movies' conclusion (I can just be Nick Twisp!) is pretty much 180 degrees from the book, where he wins Sheeni through the triumph of his sociopathology.

Considering that those traits grow even more pronounced in Revolting Youth, I just don't see how they make that movie considering the changes they made to Youth in Revolt. They turned the whole Carlotta thing into a three minute joke in the first movie, and there's a twist in the second book that's about 1000 times more fanciful.

Uhhhhhhhhhhh so this happened:

Movie Trailer: A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop (aka Zhang Yimou’s Remake of ‘Blood Simple’)

News that Zhang Yimou would be remaking the Coen Brothers’ wonderful debut feature Blood Simple caused us to scratch our heads in puzzlement. But every new image and bit of footage from A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop (formerly Amazing Tales: Three Guns and The First Gun) has suggested that, hey, maybe the whole project is actually a good idea. Now there’s a trailer for the North American release of the film, and it looks better than anything we’ve seen so far. The trailer starts off pretty serious — the fact that a man’s wife is having an affair is revealed, and he hires a hitman to deal with the situation. But then there’s a bit of comedy the follows right after, and it’s a very Coen sort of juxtaposition.

I understand the way they went.. But yea, taking out the sheriff would have been good.. Better yet, going out "Butch Cassidy & The Sundance kid" style would have killed..

But then there goes the sequels. Which, IMO, wouldn't be a bad thing.

i like it a little more than both of you, i think. it's power is not really in the overt horror but rather the psychological. i don't think the ending could have gone in any other direction. i do think polanski largely wasted the considerable talents of cassavettes here.

i like it a little more than both of you, i think. it's power is not really in the overt horror but rather the psychological. i don't think the ending could have gone in any other direction. i do think polanski largely wasted the considerable talents of cassavettes here.

I think Polanski's Repulsion is a far superior thriller.

Maybe it goes in the Goodfellas category where I am missing something by not seeing it long ago. I was surprised that the character of Rambo was as 'deep' as it was. I know it's an action movie, but I couldn't stop laughing to myself that the premise was he got harassed for being a drifter and somehow it escalated to an all out war in the forest. The end was decent as well. I am not a huge action movie guy, so I could be slightly harsh with the ratings here. A 5/10 for me is average - decent one time, but I probably wouldn't pop it in again and probably could think of 40-50 action movies I'd rather watch over it.

I agree that's where the power was, I guess I was thinking there would be more there. Don't think the ending could have gone differently, it just came off as being a lot cheesier than the rest of the flick

God didn't make Rambo.........I did.Brian Dennehy being a richard and a power slide in the police station are both excellent ingredients for a great movie. Also, did I mention there is a giant knife and some sweet dirt bike jumps?

The 2nd half was a lot of fun, but the the first 45mins of scenes on Krypton, him as a teen, him getting his 'education' for 12 or so years after getting to the Fortress of Solitude were getting painful to watch for me. If I watched it again, I'd probably skip right to the later part of the movie. The FX were pretty bad, but you have to expect that. Still worth the watch, but the first 1/2 drags the grade down a bit. 6/10.

The 2nd half was a lot of fun, but the the first 45mins of scenes on Krypton, him as a teen, him getting his 'education' for 12 or so years after getting to the Fortress of Solitude were getting painful to watch for me. If I watched it again, I'd probably skip right to the later part of the movie. The FX were pretty bad, but you have to expect that. Still worth the watch, but the first 1/2 drags the grade down a bit. 6/10.

Drowning Mona

Wasn't aware this film existed until recently. Fun to see a now great actor, Casey Affleck, learning his technique. Very dark and pretty funny. Script was excellent but the whole thing fell apart the last 20 minutes or so. I completely lost interest by the end.

I didn't catch that as I was watching it. I thought the psychologist was one of John's students, not his son.

I find Cera's characters to sometimes be more humorous, but mostly more neurotic.If you havent seen Eisenberg in anything but a comedy (meaning probably Zombieland and Adventureland), then watch Rodger Dodger, The Squid and The Whale, and The Education of Charlie Banks and you'll see why he's a better actor.

I've stated I'm not an action guy, and I've missed out on a lot of these movies years ago. Some hold up, and some don't. These are good movies, but I didn't find them to be great. Watching them for the first time doesn't help. I think The Running Man is a great movie, but that's because I've seen it a bunch of times and embrace it's cheesiness. If I'd watch it for the first time now, I'd probably give it about the same ratings.

Also, I think my ratings are a little different than others - a 6 is a good movie that I would watch a couple times again. To get into the 7-8 range you are talking best movie of the year or so (at least in that genre), so maybe the rating was a tad low, but still wouldn't get higher than a 7. Would you feel better if I didn't post my rating?

I know, and I realize my ratings are a little harsh for older movies I haven't seen. I'll take a little break from the the classics and looks like next up might be Knowing. (hope that's not an all time fav for you...)

Taken for what it is, I enjoyed Knowing.

Just finished Season 1 of Hung last night. It's basically HBO's version of Weeds with a male in the lead. Mostly fluff, but a compelling storyline or two here or there. His pimp, Tonya, really annoys me. Entertaining, but really nothing special here. Kind of curious as to why it takes place in Detroit, setting really hasn't come into play so far.

ETA: I'm half way done with the Life and Times of Tim. Now this is some funny stuff. Slacker Tim gets into crazy, exaggerated, Curb Your Enthusiasm on crack type of situations. Except he really doesn't care. Love it.

I can't search for it since it's only 3 letters (lame) and I'm not going to scour through 300 pages of this thread. I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard some mixed reviews, and wanted to see what anyone here thinks of it. I've heard from "amazing" all the way down to "horrible".

If you keep in mind that it's an independent film with the budget of about a buck fitty, I think you'll enjoy it.I thought it "worked" and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I watched this based on recommendations in other threads. I liked it, it was very original and visually interesting. It grabbed me. I was a little confused at the end. Come back after you watch it and see if you can answer this for me:

Hung is ok. Much like Entourage, the acting and writing is mediocre. But I still find it mildly entertaining. Life and Times of Tim is hilarious.

Movie Trailer: A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop (aka Zhang Yimou’s Remake of ‘Blood Simple’)

News that Zhang Yimou would be remaking the Coen Brothers’ wonderful debut feature Blood Simple caused us to scratch our heads in puzzlement. But every new image and bit of footage from A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop (formerly Amazing Tales: Three Guns and The First Gun) has suggested that, hey, maybe the whole project is actually a good idea. Now there’s a trailer for the North American release of the film, and it looks better than anything we’ve seen so far. The trailer starts off pretty serious — the fact that a man’s wife is having an affair is revealed, and he hires a hitman to deal with the situation. But then there’s a bit of comedy the follows right after, and it’s a very Coen sort of juxtaposition.

Watched the trailer... I don't like the look of it. The acting in the trailer seemed kind of corny and the original Blood Simple is just one the greatest movie debuts of all time. Much like I don't get the point of a lot of American remakes I don't get the point of a foreign one and it doesn't make it more original to remake a movie.

I don't mind some remakes. But to me, there is absolutely no point in remaking Blood Simple - as it's a perfect movie.

First Blood:

There are several series that I haven't seen any of the movies of, so I am going to correct that over the next few weeks -Superman, Rambo, and Mad Max being in the mix of those movies. After I got over how silly it was for the police to be messing with him to that level to begin with, it became an average action movie for me. Wouldn't watch it again, but I didn't turn it off. Maybe in the range of 5/10 for me.

Wow.. Still one of my all time favorites..

I'd say I've seen it at least 50 times.. and I'm not exaggerating.. use to watch it at least once a Month back in 8th & 9th grade. Still catch it a couple times a year..

yep, love it for a few reasons. first, it's just a great action flick. also, the music is awesome. and I like the fact that Rambo shows some semblance of a personality in this movie, which completely disappears in subsequent sequels.

I thought it was better than Training Day, which I thought had an absurd plot.

Black Death: A group of christian mercenaries, led by a young monk (Eddie Redmayne), go off in search of a village that is unaffected by the plague. The men believe that village has outcast god and is under the rule of a necromancer who has been bringing the dead back to life. Haven't seen Redmayne in anything before but thought he was great. He, the young monk, goes with the mercenaries for his own reason (to find a girl) and end ups being forced to question his faith. Lots of gruesome scenes throughout (witch burnings, torture) so it won't be for everyone. Christianity is also made to look pretty awful. Good movie all around. 4/5 (71% on RT)

Centurion: Another film set in (shortly before) medieval times... this one, not so good. The Roman 9th Legion is attempting to concur northern Britain when it faces resistance from the Picts. The Picts use guerrilla warfare and the land to their advantage to some how wipe out the entire legion save for a handful of men. So far so good for the movie until that point. The battle scenes were excellent and the sets were great. After that, it completely falls off... and the battle is about 20 minutes in. The remaining men attempt to rescue their captured general from the Picts village and are then unmercifully hunted for the remaining of the movie. Oh, the hunt is led by a woman who can pick up a rock and know exactly where the men are. This 130lb woman can also take out roman soldiers in a straight up fight. Among other ridiculous things, as the men are being hunted in rugged terrain in the middle of nowhere, they come across a hot blonde living in a hut by herself. I had no idea that hot blondes lived by themselves in the forest during medieval times. Not the absolute worst movie ever, but it was pretty bad. Some how it got a 55% on RT. 2/5

Something else I noticed about Centurion was that they dropped a few f-bombs during the movie. Got me thinking when/who created that word and whether it belonged in the movie or not. A quick look on wiki shows that it was around AD1500 for the first usage... about 1350 years later than this movie was based in.
