Monty Python: Almost the Truth

Always loved them but this is insightful. Even my children 12 and 15 like Monty Python now. They think it is goofy and weird by today's standards (re: the fish slapping dance) but I am teaching them to appreciate the voices, drawings and subjective humor. Will they ever get it? No. But they like it and giggle. That is good enough for me.

i was home from work yesterday and able to watch "big fan" via netflix streaming while my son napped. i like patton oswalt a ton but this was a pretty disappointing movie. it had stuff going for it in the early going but pretty much #### the bed in the second half. the ending was even worse. i wasn't expecting "taxi driver" or "the fan", with de niro and snipes, but it seemed afraid to go dark. if you wanted a character study then make the script work just a little harder. i knew it was coming off the rails when there was a montage in the middle. that said, i've seen worse over in the SP...

Patton Oswald skinning people up would have been Actually reminded me a lot of the Shark Pool, his obsession with the call in show seemed to subconsciously exceed even his obsession for the team.

I was terribly disappointed with this movie and it was my first exposure to Oswalt who everyone says is so funny. Because of Big Fan I find it difficult to gear up to watch his other work.

Patton is the kind of personality that would probably be awesome to hang out with, and he looks like has fun with everything he does. But, I've never seen him be "hilarious".

Edge was the least interesting to me and seemed to be out of his element for whatever reason throughout the movie. Still worth it to me because I always get a visceral response from listening to people who love what they do and have so much passion, no matter what the topic is. The doc was watchable for that, but still fell short of expectations.

I agree with this. I had high hopes and was expecting more. IMGL is one of the few discs where I found the extras more interesting than the feature itself. Some of the deleted scenes should have certainly been left in, and I thought the press conference was quite interesting as well.

When I was 10 years old, I was deep into Python. Movies, TV show, even records. I didn't understand more than 30% of the jokes, but I loved it anyway.

Did you watch The Comedians of Comedy on Comedy Central. He made me lol several times in that show. Hilarious.

Jack came off as sort of dooshy, but I am a fan and I at least admire the passion. Edge was just there for the doc - I am sure he has passion about what he does, but it didn't seem to come across like the other 2.

Maria Bamford doesn't make me laugh. But The Comedians of Comedy featured Oswalt, Brian Posehn, and Zach Galifianakis - three of the funniest current comedians.

it's probably my favorite scorsese. it's very much of the period but what keeps it from being another "wild night in the 80's" genre pic are the little things like the ending of the movie. it's funny, tense and a little weird all at the same time.

I know Griffin Dunne has directed some stuff and still works, but I'm surprised he hasn't had a more successful career.

After Hours is highly underrated and feels a bit like an early Coen brothers movie to me rather than Scorcese. Great dark comedy.

My favorite acting moment of Cage ever was when he and Rhames deliver the twins on the street and the look on Cage's face when he realizes the one in his hands is dead. Very morbid moment, but that one looks pretty much sums up the entire life of his character.

I've tried to watch King of Comedy a couple of times and could never get through it. It's been a while and I'll probably give it another shot soon.

I didn't enjoy as much as others... mainly because it did have the Coen's feel. I just felt like it showed just how talented the Coen's are and it maybe revealed some flaws of Scorsese. I still love Scorsese but a lot of the movie felt forced compared to a lot of the Coen's works which hurt it when I was watching it. Maybe not a fair analysis but I couldn't help but draw the parallels. Even the casting of Cheech and Chong in small roles is Coenesk to have some talented role players in bit parts who kind of define the movie without being meant to define the movie.

just a bit unfair to judge work against stuff made after it, no telling what influence the original work could have had on the later. I think the Coen's tell a better story than Scorsese, but don't have near the camera technique. A lot of the shots from Miller's Crossing were original and imaginative, but also reminded me of something Scorsese might do. Specifically, the scene with Polito screaming.

I"ve repeatedly said I'm a big fan of KoC. Rupert Pupkin was my message board and FF team name of choice for a long time.Its a tough sell though for most, with Sandrah Bernhardt and a fantastic Jerry Lewis. Curious to hear what you think.

Pirate Radio

Here's a movie that tries hard to be sentimental. And it works. Not a great movie, but very entertaining and heartfelt. Thumbs up.

Overall I would say I enjoyed this movie but it seemed to miss the mark on multiple occasions. It never really develops an identity, there are a lot of characters with a similar amount of screen time so it becomes difficult to relate to any of them (e.g. I never picked up on Rhys Darby's character being the butt end of jokes but then it becomes semi-prominent in the last 5 minutes, it seemed misplaced).The worst part for me were the antagonists. The government officials are worse than caricatures. They are purely one dimensional to the extreme (that may have been an attempt at humor by the writers but it didn't work for me) and they have horrible dialogue. They actually named one character "####"! Seriously. Boss Hogg and Roscoe P Coltrane would have been more credible antagonists.

I think the best part is the running tribute to Baldrick (from Black Adder) in the character of Thick Kevin.

There were many entertaining moments relating to life on the boat. The characters on the boat were very likable and the actors had good chemistry.

I probably will not watch it again but it's good enough for a go 'round.

I've read some fairly negative reviews of this movie, and I don't get it. I thought it was really fun. I can't remember the last new horror movie I enjoyed. And as a bonus, this movie is very funny at times.

Terminator Salvation

I expected to hate this movie given all the bad reviews, but it was entertaining. Not a great movie by any stretch. Still, kind of fun.

Nothing special, but very enjoyable. Many modern action films stink, so I suppose by that standard Salt was a cut above.

The Road - hard to watch but well done, definitely kept me interested. One very creepy part.

Quarantine - Started slow but very intense finish. Thought it was pretty good.

Excellent movie. Although I would never have called Cage "bad" here. I think he was hamming it up for good reason.

Sunshine Cleaning

I know I sound like a broken record lately, but this one was OK. Had an interesting premise, but seemed to jump around and not really give you much on any of the characters - not good when it's a character driven movie.

Although despite the weird eyes, I do have a thing for Amy Adams.

The Insider

Never was too big of a fan of Michael Mann's camera style. For every interesting shot he has, it seems like it his surrounded by 5 jarring ones. Interior scenes were especially absurd, he brings a sense of urgency to several scenes that don't really need it. Crowe turns in a dynamite performance and Pacino works as a good foil to show off how good he is. I just didn't find it to be a great film.

The Hollywood insight and satire was totally money, the murder mystery part of it sucked. Fun to see so many Hollywood players play along and while I've never been a huge Altman fan either, he brings this together seamlessly. Bruce Willis cameo was great.

Running Scared (1986)

Billy Crystal annoys me, not a fan of Gregory Hines, but I enjoyed this a lot. This was a great 80's buddy cop movie. In the same class as 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop. Tons of one liners and some decent action scenes.

The Devil's Rejects

Not a fan of "torture porn" horror movies, but if one of them had to work, this one did. Rob Zombie just has an uncanny feel for a good horror flick. His camera work is great, and choice of music couldn't have been better. Best horror film I've seen in a long time, about a million times better than House of 1000 Corpses. Guess I'll have to give the Halloween remakes a chance. Loses half a point for being vile, disgusting trash; but it's great vile, disgusting trash.
