Real effects >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> CGI. This is why I like Carpenter's The Thing so much.
We need a good non-CGI bear attack movie. I wanna see a bear pull a helicopter down from the sky or knock someone's head 20 feet off with one swipe. I'm going to get to work on the screenplay. No CGI, but the bear is equipped with a chain gun for the finale.
As long as we're making a bear action thriller, why not add monkeys?
Gorillas, Chimps, or Baboons?Gorillas were very poorly represented in Congo, that was such an awesome novel turned into such a disappointing movie.
 I loved this book when it came out and was really disappointed with the movie. I could see this movie as a remake

Watched After Hours for the first time last night. Hard to believe that Scorsese of all people was involved in laying the groundwork on the kind of running gag that made Ben Stiller famous. Love the opening and closing camera shots. Loved how dark it was. Great film.

4.5/5
I DVR'd this flick about a week ago and watched it last night.Really well acted movie. Not just Dunne but Garr, Arquette and Heard.

I read a couple of reviews and it was stated that Scorsese originally wanted to end the movie with Dunne trapped inside the sculpture, but everyone else was against it. Everyone. The writers, the producers, the crew, and Scorsese relented.

It took me a few minutes to recognize the older woman at the bar: she was Mrs. Wormer from "Animal House".

Watched The Ghost Writer last night. I know there was a previous discussion on this one. Unlike most of you guys, I liked the ending and felt that it fit the rest of the film pretty well.

Blood Simple - 8/10

Cohen Brothers movies are either hit or miss. This one was a hit. I love how patient the movie is. Might be my 2nd favorite Cohen Bros. movie after Miller's.

Great movie. I am a fan of almost every film they've made. Barton Fink, not so much. I do prefer their dramas over their comedies, but even their light work is entertaining - Ladykillers included.

In the Mouth of Madness

Lesser-known John Carpenter thriller starring Sam Neil. Goofy, gross, funny, wacky, and nonsensical. I can't believe I'm recommending this movie, but all this insanity makes for a really fun movie.

Two thumbs way up.

Event Horizon - 5/10

Too bad all the footage that Anderson had to cut out is lost because it might be interesting to see what was intended rather than the mess we got.

Ghost Writer

This movie had lots of potential. Excellent acting, beautiful photography, and a solid script. Plus, Ewan McGregor's protagonist is quite prickly, which was an interesting twist. But man did this movie blow it at the end. Mrs. Dogg and I looked at each other and said, "Is that all?"

I'm glad I saw the movie, but what a disappointing ending.
Gonna watch this over the weekend, I will be prepared to be let down at the end.
If you're into action packed thrillers, this movie will bore you. It's a subtle, smart movie that relies on characters more than action. Worth a rental despite the end.
I liked this for the most part but, as you have said, the ending was not very satisfying. I thought it was building up to something better.

Was it the inlaws this weekend and caught Anamorph on IFC with the wife and BIL. Looked to have everything going for it- decent cast, headlined by Willem Dafoe, art-inspired serial killer, spooky lighting, etc. Complete and total mess of a movie, all the more so because of it's promise. Despite being inspired by art (and Bacon in particular), the movie doesn't bother to go into it and just lets the art-inspired killings drive the narrative without any reciprocity. Plus, characters behaving sooooo stupidly and without explanation... grrr. Don't bother with this one- even if you think it's got promise.

Let The Right One In

Swedish vampire movie. Well done. 4/5. I preferred the Swedish voices with english subtitles, since the dubbing was particularly bad for a couple key characters. Note, there are a few parts in this movie that some people might take offense to. (with regards to the portrayal of children aged 12)
*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close(); After watching, I read up a bit online and it seems that some import pieces of info. were left out of the movie.

2) The father is an alcoholic, not gay. That's why when the neighbor came in looking to drink, it was awkward for the kid.

I just saw an ad that they are making an English language version of this movie. Not sure why they need to do that. The original is so great. Just watch that.

Love this movie. Didnt think it was a mess at all
loved the concept, tons of potential. didn't like the execution.
W.S. is a hack. Everything he does is full of potential it doesn't live up to. He's like the Jamarcus Russell of film making.

Zero Effect: Surprisingly good modern film noir in which even Ben Stiller is tolerable. Bill Pullman has a great performance, but I might be biased as I always like him. Overlook the holes in the plot and you have a not-quite-edge-of-your-seat but enjoyable, not run-of-the-mill private eye movie. Good if you're looking for something fairly light. 4/5
Good show.
 No one ever talks about this movie. I thought I was the only person out there who liked it.

That's what my friend's wife, who is a complete and utter hosebeast, said when they were over and we started watching The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Same skank I talked about wanting to run over with the car when we saw Inception with them, and she loudly exclaimed upon exiting "That was stupider than Twilight!!!!"

From IMDB
According to the DVD documentary, the first cut of the film had a longer "Visions from Hell" sequence, more blood, and a different, though similar, ending. The test audience didn't like it, so it was re-cut with an alternate ending involving what director Paul W.S. Anderson called "The Burning Man Sequence." The second test audience didn't like that version, and the film was edited again. The final cut is a less-intense hybrid of both test screenings, with significantly less gore.

Director Paul W.S. Anderson and producer Jeremy Bolt planned to put together a director's cut for some time, but most of the footage was lost or destroyed after post-production. A few of those scenes, which appear on the Special Collector's Edition DVD, survived only in videotape form, sometimes without dialog or sound effects. The DVD also includes storyboards of a space walk sequence that was abandoned for budget reasons, and the alternate ending, with commentary by Paul W.S. Anderson.

According to the DVD commentary, sequences deleted from the "Visions of Hell" include orgies and sadomasochism killing the Event Horizon's original crew.

Paul W.S. Anderson's initial cut of the film ran to 130 minutes and was quite graphically violent, so much so that both test audiences and the studio baulked at the finished product. Paramount ordered him to cut the film by 30 minutes and tone down some of the violence, a decision he now regrets.

Some of the lost footage includes a great deal more of the Bosch-influenced Hell sequences and of the orgiastic video log that was found in the Event Horizon. This was shot by both director Paul W.S. Anderson and Vadim Jean, mainly on weekends.

I don't know what you're talking about. Which guy? The guy that kicked the gun there?No... I can't remember very clearly now. I posted the same question when I watched the movie about a year or so ago and nobody had an answer for it. If I get bored I'll search for it.

watched the original swedish version of "the girl with the dragon tattoo". my wife is reading the series in her spare time. this film is slightly better than okay. it's well done but the script/plot is weak. it plays very much like an adaptation of a mystery novel.

also watch "red road" and liked right up until the end. nice performances, nice cinematography and one of the more unexpectedly graphic sex scenes i've seen in a mainstream film. unfortunately, the plot kind of craps out in the end and settle on a more conventional ending. it needed to go darker.

That's how I felt too. I know that it's pretty much what the novel is about, but I thought the violence was a bit gratuitous especially the bit with her guardian or whoever that guy was.

that wasn't so off-putting for me. what i found interesting was that it became very tame following all that. older, crusading journalist meets fiercely independent sexually omnivorous woman and it becomes entirely too conventional. why does she have to change? because the author - an older formerly crusading journalist - gets to indulge his fantasy.

Speaking of that - I saw Twilight yesterday. The first one. It was pretty dull and overly dramatic - but I'll probably watch the second one when its on HBO.

Orphan was ok. Standard "creepy kid" flick with a twist. All the usual fright tricks are included, many very predicatable. The acting was good all around and the little Russian girl definately fit the role as the creepy kid. Nothing particularly special about the movie though. Maybe I've just seen too many in this genre. 2/5
Somehow I ended up watching The Orphan last night.

Creepy kid.....disturbing stuff...not a great movie at all. Worth one watch. Bizzare twist/payoff (which we thought runied the movie).

2/5 stars.
My daughter got me to watch it this weekend. I would agree with what was posted here, maybe even bumping it to 2.5 but no more.

Eh. Its not so bad. I generally like teen movies and vampire movies. This one didn't do either of those particularly well but its not horrible.

Here's one thing I don't get - both Kristen Stewart and Edward Cullen fall madly in love with each other in like 10 minutes. So much so that he's willing to give up his life for her, and she will do the same. But why? There's nothing particularly spectacular about either of them. In fact, they are pretty dull. And boring. They look good - but is that really enough to make someone fall ridiculously deep in love with each other instantaneously? Maybe for Kristen Stewart - she is 17. But Edward Cullen is like 100.

The fact that the climax involves vampires playing a pick up baseball game in the middle of the woods is my clear #1 reason of why it sucks.

Got a free Redbox code and rented "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". Really good, and you can already tell where they're going to screw it up in the Americanized version.

Solid acting, and an interesting cold case murder mystery.

Warning for some: It's subtitled, so get ready to do some reading.

Dear Mr. Scott,Please do us fanboys a favor and make sure they are Aliens movies and not a lone Alien. Hooter's adolescence still hasn't gotten over the massive disappoint after realizing the dog alien was the only thing we were going to get.

P.S. Awesome idea by the way.
I am not sure what you are trying to say here.Is it just that you didn't like Alien? I have always thought it was unfair to compare the two. They are just so dramatically different, they don't even really belong in the same genre.

What's a dog alien?

Dog alien is in reference to Alien 3.After you go from Alien to Aliens, you shouldn't go back to Alien again.

Despite multiple images from this movie being quite disturbing and sticking in my mind weeks after I saw this movie, the twisted side of me wants to see the full unedited version :scared:

By completely toning it down, casting some boring people for the roles, and slapping a PG-13 rating on it to cater to the emo, computer hacking teens?

Saw Transformers 2 over the weekend.

The first one was stupid. It was good popcorn fare, but that's about it. The action sequences were too fast and they made all the transformers look the same instead of just making them look the way they were supposed to. But overall, it wasn't so bad that I didn't enjoy the time spent - free of course, you couldn't have forced me to pay money to see it.

So when the sequel hit HBO and I caught the very very end I thought to myself, ok gotta check this out when its on late and the family is sleeping and I just want to lose myself in a useless two hours of fun. Finally did this weekend.

Why did I bother? The action was worse, the acting was worse which I didn't think possible. The whole thing reeked of everything being forced for no other reason that to make it look big and expensive and loud. There was a person transformer - WTF? I mean really? This is how they've chosen to destroy another solid childhood entertainment venue?

I can't even give it a 1/5 for entertainment purposes. Even Ms. Fox on camera every now and then running and bouncing wasn't enough to save this crapfest of craptasic crap. I can't imagine actually paying money to see this.

Bin - freaking - goThere's 3 eyebrow raising scenes that are going to get stripped down for sure.

I got a request for you guys, I hit up the treadmill or elliptical just about every day for 30 minutes. Music bores the #### out of me while I'm working out, so I'm looking for a good TV series to watch. The problem is the running time of an episode is either 45-55 minutes or 22 or so minutes for most TV shows. I'm not sure if there is anyway around this with commercials and all, so if that is the case whats the best <30 minute TV show for me to watch while working out?

On a movie note, I watched Repo Men tonight. Entertaining but little more, the plot was very predictable and Forest Whitaker's eye bugs the crap out of me every time I see him. Gets a half point taken off for ripping of the ending of Vanilla Sky. 1.5/5

I was curious, so I looked up what the hell has happened to his eye since his Bloodsport days. Turns out he didn't have a Stuart Scott type accident, he just has a lazy eyelid that he is considering getting fixed.

He had the eye issue during Bloodsport (1988) and The Color of Money (1986). In fact it sure seemed like something was up with the eye as far back as Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982).I was more surprised with how much weight he had lost in Repo Men and am wondering if he will keep it off.

British TV is (usually) commercial free and oftentimes closer to the 30-min mark, someone more knowledgeable than I might be able to recommend a good Britcom.

HBO shows fit the ball. I'd say go with Curb your Enthusiasm or Flight of the Concords. I believe both shows (and probably all "half hour" HBO shows) have a running time of 27-28min per episode.

along those lines, there are some shows from the canada that are pretty good. obviously, if you like sketch comedy then "the kids in the hall" are for you. if you are more for darker comedies - think "curb your enthusiasm" to some degree -then i would recommend "the newsroom". i haven't seen the entire series but what i have seen has been interesting.
