Watched American Beauty again over the weekend.

Still one of my favorite movies and I'm tempted to give it a perfect 10 rating.

This movie would be better if there was someone besides Mena "Fivehead" Suvari in it.

I don't know. I think she's perfect for the part. She's not overly hot but thinks she is, just like her character.And anyone else might not be as believable in falling for Lester.

Point taken. I've just always disliked her, which takes me out of the movie.

I get it. I feel the same way about certain actors.I just love all the subtle things that the movie says without saying. Like when Lester offers Angela a sip of his beer. She accepts but is so inexperienced (contrary to what she tries to portray) that she can't even drink a beer properly and it dribbles on her face. It's just so in line with the "Look Closer" theme. Love it.

Altered

Better than what I was expecting. Good ole fashioned campy monster fun with plenty of gore and non-cgi effects. Has plenty of holes, but doesn't seem to care. Doesn't always make sense at times, but again the film doesn't care. Alien was actually pretty good considering the budget. From the creator of Blair Witch Project, but filmed in the traditional sense.

Just saw Hot Tub Time Machine over the weekend.

Might be that I got laid off on Friday. Might be that I got laid off Friday AND had to make our 4th move this weekend since our fire in July and feeling just a wee bit suicidal. But I was pretty meh about it. Not enough funny lines or situations, despite a good cast. Thought the kid had the best material and did a good job with it- followed by Cordry, who played the jag-off ####### way better, IMO, than a Galkonis (wtf his name is from Hangover). Or maybe I wasn't in the mood.

Get Him To the Greek:

Seems like this is the standard for comedy movies lately - be fairly funny for about 45mins to an hour and then drag on for the next hour. I think The Hangover is like this, as are several other comedies lately. There is some funny stuff in here for sure, but I just found myself checking the clock towards the end. I'd probably watch it again if I stumbled across in on HBO, but that's about it. Worth it for the songs/videos if nothing else. 5/10.

I agree, mostly. Although I really liked the movie and laughed several times. Many modern comedies seem to follow the Judd Apatow model: very funny at times - especially early, but a bit preachy and overly dramatic in the final 1/3. It's a shame that more comedies don't aspire to be true, 100% comedies anymore. Observe and Report did a decent job breaking from this mold.

That's exactly it. Not a formula that has a lot of rewatchablity for me, hence the lower score from me.

Yes. Although for some reason, some of his movies were better the second time. Don't know why, but I liked The 40 Year Old Virgin more the second time.

How To Train Your Dragon

Saw this in the theater and loved it. Now I am re-watching with the family. Wow, does this look stunning on blu ray. I am very impressed with this movie. One of the best animated films I've seen in years, and easily as good as most Pixar movies.

I saw it in the theater and loved it. The thing I really loved is the hero didn't come out unscathed after the final battle and that he was able to incorporate it to the dragon

Definitely. The more I think about this movie, the higher it gets ranked on my all time list.

Punisher: War Zone

Holy crap. I can't remember the last time I saw such a violent movie. This movie has far more brutal kill scenes than most horror films. The violence was so graphic, it kind of reminded me of Robocop. In many ways, this is just a standard action flick. But I do give it points for some of the creative kills.

Absolutely adore this film for the reasons mentioned. The decapitation by boot stomp was my favorite. The technique used to fix a broken nose was pretty solid as well.

I liked it a lot. I liked the fist half of the movie about the operations of the casino more than the second half about all the personal stuff. But an excellent movie, nonetheless.

i haven't seen it since it was in the theaters. i liked in conceptually but i felt the execution was lacking. proyas seems to favor style over substance.

If Blade Runner is slow, consider me a fan of slow films. Set aside Blade Runner's brilliant, revolutionary visuals (and that's impossible), and you still have a great story with one of the most beautiful, poetic endings in cinema history.

I saw this movie based off the hype from these forums and I was pretty disappointed. It has interesting ideas, but it doesn't feel like a modern sci-fi to me, especially when compared to the Matrix which was supposedly made with the same sets and whatnot. The story was pretty neat but the execution could have been a whole lot better. One main problem I had was the strangers look stupid. For a 'modern' sci-fi the strangers look like villains you would make in an old school pioneering sci-fi film. Usually I like Connelly a lot, but I didn't like her so much here. She's a performer in a place full of people (can't remember the setting) but she doesn't even acknowledge that there are other people in the room, she's looking at the ground the whole time; felt really unnatural. Rufus Sewell is a meh actor imo, not good enough for a lead role.

Good point.Little Scrappy Doo in the background just about caused me to turn off the movie. Glad I didn't but their appearance doesn't lend itself to cinematic tension.

Listening to the Ebert commentary, this movie is a tribute to classic German silent films. So while I won't try to convince you that the Strangers look cool, I should point out that their look (and much of the movie's look) is a pursposeful homage.

Thought the Strangers were top notch, probably couldn't have been done better. I thought the homage was great. They inhabit dead bodies, what are they supposed to look like? Special Effects fest at the actually fit in the context of the story instead of the cgi crapfest that ends so many Hollywood Sci-Fi films done in the last 20 years. If you look at this as an interpretation of a graphic novel or similar material, it couldn't possibly have been done better. Liked the comic book style over substance. Maybe I'm appreciating it more now than when I watched it, which is probably a sign that the concept was better than the execution.

Holy crap was it bad. Granted I have much love for the original and while it was cheesy, it had some things going for it: Daniel was a dork that you could root for, you had the sense that he didn't know as much as the Cobra Kai's entering the tournament which gave him the underdog thing to root for, and they were old enough that any love interest had some meaning.

BIG problem with this movie is that the characters are 11 and 12. Just cringe-worthy watching the supposed love interest develop and watching Jackie Chan woop on 6 12 year olds. Add that to how evil the bully kids were at that age and how much Kung Fu little Will Smith knew by the time the tournament started (prime example is the final move), and it is just silly.

I would stay away from this like the plague.

Great stuff, but I enjoyed Yojimbo and Seven Samurai a tad bit better. I think I'm a little more comfortable with his stories in B & W. The King's fool character was a little too much Jar Jar Binks for me.

Saw Eastwood's the Hereafter tonight. #### sandwich.Horrible pacing. Horrible writing. Poor narrative structure not helped by horrible pacing and writing (circular narrative following three stories). Terrible score.Considering we don't see many movies since the kid- when we see one, it better be decent... (tickets are now $13 in NYC...!, let alone baby-sitting fee)- this felt completely pointless.

This movie looked absolutely horrible the first time I saw a preview, which I dont think Ive ever said about a Clint directed movie. I wont watch this when its on HBO.

Just like Billy did in the original even down to the same music. The Laurence Fishburne character, although interesting, was on waay too short. Not an awful movie, just wish I would have waited until it became a free movie on Comcast OnDemand.

I liked it enough, especially compared to the AVP's and most movies like it that are coming out these days...Fishburne's character seemed pointless and distracting to me though. Actually thought the swordfight scene was pretty sweet

That seems a little extreme. I have liked enough of Clint's work, and disagree with many people's opinions on some of his films, to give pretty much anything he does a fair shake. Swordfight was cool. I like that the Predator decided to man up and go toe-to-toe instead of wussing out behind the cloaking device and shoulder mounted long range nuclear accelerator gun thing like they normally do.

Fo sho.Don't waste the time/money in the theaters (although the tidal wave sequence is decent big-screen), but it's fine for TV/free/already-payed-for-premium channel. I'm particularly harsh on films I see in the theaters since the our 3yo was born due to lack of time/energy and expense for it. Hereafter was a bad film for me given that- but it's not a bad film in an a more objective sense- still not great though.

I think The Hangover is like this, as are several other comedies lately. There is some funny stuff in here for sure, but I just found myself checking the clock towards the end. I'd probably watch it again if I stumbled across in on HBO, but that's about it. Worth it for the songs/videos if nothing else. 5/10.

I agree, mostly. Although I really liked the movie and laughed several times. Many modern comedies seem to follow the Judd Apatow model: very funny at times - especially early, but a bit preachy and overly dramatic in the final 1/3. It's a shame that more comedies don't aspire to be true, 100% comedies anymore. Observe and Report did a decent job breaking from this mold.

That's exactly it. Not a formula that has a lot of rewatchablity for me, hence the lower score from me.

Yes. Although for some reason, some of his movies were better the second time. Don't know why, but I liked The 40 Year Old Virgin more the second time.

Definitely liked Knocked Up more the 2nd time around

Watched American Beauty again over the weekend.

Still one of my favorite movies and I'm tempted to give it a perfect 10 rating.

This movie would be better if there was someone besides Mena "Fivehead" Suvari in it.

I don't know. I think she's perfect for the part. She's not overly hot but thinks she is, just like her character.And anyone else might not be as believable in falling for Lester.

Point taken. I've just always disliked her, which takes me out of the movie.

I dont like her, but cant say I dislike her so much where it would hurt a movie as good as American Beauty. Good point by Dufresne as well.Now Julia Stiles, dont get me started. Cant stand that #####

Want to see this pretty much solely because Jackie Earle Haley plays Freddy
