I'm not sure if I posted a review of The Illusionist (the French animated one, not the Edward Norton thing) here during my hiatus. If not, I wanted to make sure my high-quality movie buddies knew it was my top film of 2010 (even above Winter's Bone and Black Swan) and one of my favorites of the 21st century so far. Absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking, with the best three-word denouement you could imagine.
Nice. I liked The Triplets of Belleville, so that's enough for me to add it.

caught "the fantastic mr. fox" over the weekend and was entertained. it's classic wes anderson really. it's slight even for a children's book adapted but it's fun. like all of his films, how much you might like this film is dependent of your tolerance for quirks. if your threshold is high then you ought to enjoy this. it's kind of a throwback to "rushmore" in some ways.

The Kids Are All Right

I've been avoiding this movie ever since the early Oscar buzz. Well, Mrs. Dogg was watching this last night, and the parts I saw were embarrassingly bad. Horrible, cliche dialogue. Terrible. I didn't see one thing that convinced me this was worth my time.

i didn't think it was terrible but it was a disappointing for me. cholodenko has made some interesting films like "high art" and "laurel canyon". i think this particular film got slightly misrepresented to the audiences. despite the story, it's not a story about gay families, gay relationships or anything like that. it's a fairly conventional family dramedy. it's not offering much of anything new despite the circumstances surrounding the characters.

That's an admirable defense. But the dialogue I heard sounded like it was written by a high school student.

Meek's Cutoff

Beautifully filmed, yet bleak story of three families following a guide (Meek) along a shortcut from the Northwest passage. The drama is generated by the party against the environment, the families against the guide, and an Indian is thrown in for an extra serving of dramatic conflict.

This is Kelly Reichart's fourth film, all set in Oregon. I really enjoyed Wendy & Lucy, but not so much Old Joy. This film reminds me more of the latter.

If you had a problem with the lack of dialogue and endless scenes of the characters simply walking across the landscape in The Way Back, this film make make you suicidal. It makes Way Back seem chatty.

While an admirable piece of filmmaking/cinematography, it left me wanting more: characterization, conflict and resolve.

2.9/5

I wanted to love it but scott pilgrim vs the world really did nothing for me. I found it ok but it did not suck me in. I found myself bored in some parts, probably a 2.8/5

Saw Easy A. It was okay but I got a little annoyed at how everybody was so clever and witty with the snappy dialogue. It's okay in a character or two, but when everybody is firing off one liners at each other it gets a tad annoying.

I like Scott Pilgrim better

i am conflicted about this film. it looks good but i pretty much hated "Wendy & Lucy". the reviews have been very positive, so i might have to give this a go.

Wendy & Lucy put me in a coma that only repeat viewings of Evil Dead could cure.

Yeah. This movie had no business being nominated for an Oscar.

Yeah the execution was pretty dull but something about the premise resonated with me. Then again I really struggled with the drowning guy/dog poll.

Saw August Rush last night.

Let me start by saying that yes, you have to suspend disbelieve for a couple of key plot devices. With that in mind, let me also say that this was the type of movie that you watch and then say: "you know, they should make more movies like this," but they don't because nobody watches movies like that (does that make sense?).

In a nutshell: I LOVED this movie, even though I had to suspend disbelief, even though it was over the top, even though the producers were playing with my emotions. That was all ok, because I TRULY ENJOYED watching this movie. It made me feel good about people, it made me feel good about life, and art, and myself. And I had a good time watching it. So to that end, this movie felt like this generation's "Searching for Bobby Fisher" (another movie that nobody really notices, but everybody who watches it enjoys, a movie for both kids and adults, a movie with "heart" even if it is a little contrived).

There are so few movies that a dad can watch with his kids (7 and 10) and both the dad and the kids can REALLY enjoy. If you think about it in that way, this movie belongs in the same conversation as Iron Giant, Toy Story, Searching for Bobby Fisher, Billy Eliot, The Power of One, The Water Horse, and some others I'm sure I can't think of right now. Not perfect movies, but a damn fine way to spend an afternoon.

wow...last time I was in her was page 394...that sounds like way too many pages to go thru for like 3 good movies. Can I get a synopsis?!

Watched Invictus a couple days ago. It was solid. I think Damon is a good actor, but didnt believe him here. On the other hand, the film ephasizes Mandela and Morgan Freeman nailed that role down to the dialect and delivery.

ETA: 7.7/10

Get Low was liked a lot by a few here. King's Speech - mixed reviews. And since you have Danny McBride in your avatar, I'll warn you that Your Highness was terrible. I'm a McBride fan, but this movie was lazy with almost no laughs.

The Way Back - Huge disappointment. I'm a gigantic Peter Weir fan - heard tons of stories about him from my old pal Bill Kelley (writer of "Witness") & even got my director cousin to consult on locations with him for his Geisha movie. The story of a desperate walk from the Gulag to India seemed right up the alley of a director with such a remarkable sense of place. After spending 2+ hrs & 5000 miles with this small band of escapees, I not only couldnt develop much care for their fates, but still couldnt completely distinguish between them. 2.4/5
Wait a sec... I'm a Weir fan too and am only just now connecting that he already made Walkabout once.

James Gandolfini, Diane Lane, and Tim Robbins star in this movie about a crumbling family filmed for the first reality TV show shot in the 1970s for PBS. Excellent movie. Particularly worth seeing for Diane Lane - who was so good I didn't even recognize her for most of the movie. Playing currently on HBO.
Hmmm... I wonder which family this was. Friends of ours were one of the subjects for this too... I never saw it as an adult, but I remember my folks being mightily embarrassed for them.

So the wife Netflixed only one movie for our trip to Orlando (where I knew there'd be nothing we'd want to do, especially with our 3yo asleep by 8 every night).

I can't wait to review that one movie... Skyline. It. Was. Incredible. I  my wife.

Just checked, it wsan't them.eta: It was called Six American Families... I assume a followup a few years' later to the famed originator that the HBO movie is about.

It was funnier when Albert Brooks did it.

The Loud family. Noted for the son being the first openly gay US TV personality.

I really enjoyed Skyline. It delivered everything I want from an alien apocalypse. I really appreciated that they didn't resort to the choppy hand cam can't-quite-see-the-alien-clearly stuff. Instead it was all like: BAM! Hier r d alieunz and deyre eatin' ur brainz!Seven thumbs with a bullet.

Yeah, it was the Loud family. My mother in law remembers watching it in the 70s.

I wish I could honestly tell you but I saw it a loooooong time ago, maybe even in the theater. I have very fond memories of it and thought it was very funny but I am too far removed to put it into a current perspective. I do really want to revisit it, if I can find it.

I haven't seen a ton of Brooks' movies, but I remember really liking Modern Romance.

Only 916 votes on IMDB (7) and not many on Rotten Tomatoes (88%) either.I think I need to bump this up my queue.

Ive heard good things bout Get Low, will have to check that out soon...For some reason, my mother buys me movies that neither of us have ever seen but she buys them for whatever reason, this years was Kings Speech. Havent seen it yet, have moderate interest, and its still at her house, so who knows when I actually watch it :lol:On the other hand, I thought the previews for Your Highness looked great. That disappoints me, but its not like I havent disagreed with you in the past.:therock: :football:

I'm liking it enough to continue. I just think the movie worked better as a teen romance than it does as a superhero movie.

I'm telling you that I am a HUGE McBride fan. I've even seen The Foot Fist Way - and I'm a big fan. Your Highness goes 8 minutes at a time without a laugh. And the funniest line from the trailer isn't even in the movie!

I've finally figured out why this movie doesn't work: Michael Cera's kind of the new everyman. He's the skinny, mild kid that we're supposed to root for. But here, Cera's character is capable of superhuman strength and incredible martial arts skills. FAIL. Our entire reason for rooting for a guy like Cera is removed.
