True Grit: I had no idea 14 year old girls were so intelligent in the wild west. I also didn't know that they could fall down 30+ foot holes and be perfectly fine. If you get smashed on the head with a giant rock? No biggie. Shake it off and you'll be fine in a minute. A lot of stupid in this movie that I wasn't expecting. 2.5/5

If you're applying these standards to every movie you watch, you will be sorely disappointed.

I don't. I hold each movie to different standards. From a movie like this, I expect realism. A 14 year old girl in this era would be no where near that intelligent or composed. Throw in a few zombies or aliens, and I don't care if the girl is a rocket scientist. But in a 'real life' drama like this, I want realism.

That's the M.O. of the Cohens though. They use snappy dialogue as a way to paint a portrait of the character. People don't talk like they do in Miller's Crossing either, but the style of speech gives a better idea of the type of person the character is more than 10 minutes of screentime could explain to you.It's the same way with the girl in True Grit. She was raised to be self-sufficient by her father. She's probably parroting what he said in a similar situation before. So while she wouldn't be THAT smart, it's certainly plausible that she'd be smarter than a lot of the men she encountered.

I know it is blasphemous to say here, but I'm not a big fan of the Cohens. What does raising a girl to be self-sufficient have to do with a 14 year old girl knowing the law inside and out? I'd be fine with her being smart but it is just too over the top.

I think Ferrell is way overexposed and am generally tired of his shtick. At this point my expectations for most of his stuff are incredibly low, which probably explains why I actually enjoyed The Other Guys. I was expecting zero laughs and got some pretty good ones so I walked away happy.I wouldn't watch it again but I enjoyed it the first time.

I think Ferrell's hilarious when he doesn't have to carry a mediocre movie. For example, I think Anchorman is one of the only movies he's done where the script was worthy of Ferrell.

Meh: Raising Arizona (I have a strong dislike for Cage and I only watched this about a year ago)

Raising Arizona might be the only reason why I haven't hunted Cage down like a dog and kicked him in the nuts.Great movie. It keeps getting better every time I see it.

After seeing Cage #### the bed for years on end it was hard to appreciate that he actually made a decent movie.

Though I love dumb comedies and physical comedies, most of my favorite comedies derive from really good scripts. I'm not saying Ferrell is a comic genius. I'm just saying he's funny when the script is good.

Ambivalent. Big fan of some of their movies. Hate some others. Liked: Fargo, Lebowski, No Country.

Meh: True Grit, Raising Arizona (I have a strong dislike for Cage and I only watched this about a year ago)

Bad: Blood Simple, Burn After Reading, Ladykillers, O Brother

I'm under 50% like with the Coen Bros myself, but I'm glad they're around as America's auteurs. In fact, I usually get more enjoyment anticipating their treatments of announced projects than I do watching them but, for some strange reason, that doesnt make me hate them. Plus, when they have one that hits on all cylinders, it's a great joy to dig something that is at once weird and commercial.

It is entirely possible that they actively educated their child.She was not discussing quantum theory, merely discussing issues that were germane to her situation, like not getting screwed over on the price of your horses. I doubt her mother would have sent her on the journey in the first place if she weren't quite capable.

Dexter:

Mad Men seems to be out most of the time, so I grabbed this on the way out of the store last night. Like the basic premise of the show, but there are a couple things in the 1st episode that were bugging me (mostly the voiceover, but I knew that going in). The one thing I really had a problem with:

His dad not only knew about his tendencies, but decided the best thing to do was train him to avoid the law and kill serial killers? sheesh.

I'll watch a few more episodes and report back. I think the problem that I have with TV shows is that I seem to want them to be one or the other. Either be serious - Six Feet Under, etc, or embrace that the show is a unrealistic - Buffy. Dexter seems to be toeing the line for me of being having both serious themes and ideas and mixing ideas I think are a little unrealistic. That's one reason I couldn't watch House with my wife.

I'm still kinda trudging along with Dexter. Episode 7 was the first one that I really liked and thought might propel it forward but the next episode was back to the same old, same old. Outside of Dexter himself, the rest of the cast are a bit too cheesy/stereotypical. Especially nearly everyone on the police department. I love the interaction with his father during the flashbacks the most. Since there's not much else on right now, I'll continue to watch but I've been pretty disappointed so far.I am with you. I think that the best scenes/drama in the show are with his father. However I just find the "lessons" from his police officer father to be so cheesy. Just can't buy it. Agree that everybody in the police department is almost unwatchable. Also could do with a lot less of the "I am cold and can't feel any human emotions" voice overs. Kinda goes with the territory of being a killer - don't need it spoon-fed to me every 10mins. That said, I am interested in the main plot line of the Ice Cream Truck killer. Probably power through the 1st season to see who that is and how that wraps up. Hoping that the show comes into it's own later, as a lot of shows need 1/2 a season to do.

For A Few Dollars More, while bearing the similar title has no relation to AFoD, apart from many of the same actors.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is really one of the best films ever made.

Lonesome Dove is the finest example of what broadcast television was capable of in any era. I don't think it has ever been matched, particularly when you look at the cast (Duval, Tommy Lee Jones, Diane Lane, Danny Glover, Chris Cooper and an assortment of other actors who have gone on to great success).

for the most part, i don't care for the genre but leone really did something special with this film. he's an auteur and it's stylized to great effect. just some truly great scenes and characters to be enjoyed. i can't recommend it highly enough. it's just that pleasurable a cinematic experience. when it is on AMC or Turner, i am completely powerless to resist it. it's one of those films that i will watch regardless of where i am in the viewing. 1pm or 1am it doesn't matter.

Id consider you 1 of the biggest film fans around here, along with JDogg, Krista, KP, Hooter, Groovus, Floppo and a few others. Innocent Blood isnt groundbreaking (well, maybe it was 20 years ago), but I would say its must see for all the above if you havent seen it.

Not that at all, now through the whole movie I'll be thinking about realistic/not realistic. In all honesty, I've never really liked a western, so didn't have my hopes up too much anyway.

Never seen. I'll admit that I haven't seen that many, but the 10-15 that I have seen I haven't liked. Just figured that it was something with the genre/characters. Really don't find that time/life interesting or relatable.

Granted, you seem to watch a lot of ####ty summer blockbusters, but I think it's time for you to treat yourself. Besides everything that's already been said, the Good/Bad/Ugly has perhaps the greatest soundtrack of all time imo; Ennio Morricone at his very best. Good rock n roll movie. Loved the acting from Kristen and Dakota. Some hot scences as well.

Good stuff. I am sure Lita Ford hated this movies and wanted no part of it the way she was portrayed as they did not even talk about her in the credits as to her success post Runaways.

Actually I agree with both. It's because every time I see the word 'hooter' I giggle like a school girl.

Interesting. I agree with most of this but would switch Blood Simple and Lebowski.

Agree with Andy re:Blood Simple...good film that IMO is underappreciated because of it's relative obscurity as compared to the other more "well-known" Coen films. Watched it again last night as a matter of fact due to this thread and really enjoyed.

I give lots of movies >5, just not many lately. I run a video store, so I feel the need to keep up somewhat on what is out there and May is usually a dump month for all the ####ty movies that game out in January/Feb. Looks like June has quite a few more good ones to take a peek at.

I'll bump Good/Bad/Ugly up the list and report back.

This list is going to be really hard to top. I'll still take Up in Smoke as #1 all time. Best part about it is you can get a good buzz by the time Low Rider is done, laugh for the next 20 minutes, and sleep though the rest.I saw Stoned Age for the first time a couple weeks ago, seeing Jake Busey almost blew my mind because before that I thought I was watching something made in the mid 80's. Its like Dazed and Confused except I haven't seen it 400 times.

You're good people in my book, Chaka. This is one thread where we've managed to keep the tool factor way down compared to some of the rest of the mega threads. The usual suspects in here are like my 2nd family who I've never met.
