I enjoy Boondock Saints every time I watch it. Fun story, good action, funny dialogue and Dafoe is awesome. What's not to like?

Perhaps I am influenced by my enjoyment of the documentary Overnight about the Boston bartender, Troy Duffy, who wrote Boondock and thought he had become an overnight success story and then proceeded to burn every bridge and piss away every shred of his success. Good stuff. Either way I enjoyed Boondock and will continue to do so unashamedly.

The sequel otoh sucked Hulk nuts.
:goodposting:

Movie snobs wont like it, but if you can get past the sub-par acting(except for Dafoe), it is a good movie. The sequel wasnt very good, but it is far from the worst movie i have ever seen.
I think even the most jaded viewer should appreciate Dafoe's performance at the very least. Great character.
I doubt any viewer would appreciate the performance after turning the movie off less than 1/4th of the way through.A big pet peeve of mine throughout this thread has been people reporting back about how awful a movie was after the first 15 minutes and then turning it off. If you don't have the attention span to at least sit through the movie, at least have the courtesy not to complain to us all about how bad you thought it probably would have been if you watched it.

That said, 2001: A Space Odyssey was freaking awful. Turned it off after 15 minutes.

That movie about the Hogan's Heroes guy was way worse.Him and Kinnear sitting side by side choking their chickens while watching pron is a scene unfortunately scorched onto my retinas.

oh, just wanted to mention that "pillars of the earth" is laughably bad. ian mcshane flogging himself with a cat-o-nine-tails should not elicit giggling from the viewer.

i can tell you were paying real close attention.

Not liking it isnt exclusive to movie snobs. I was just playing the percentages, people with no taste wont like it either. ;)

Oh yeah, Young Guns 2. Except people actually got shot in that one. Terrible, overrated movie by people who were told it was cool before they saw it. I can't believe anyone would watch it twice.
An unrealistic shoot in movies?

Thankfully for you, you must have never seen Antichrist :X

Watched a couple episodes of The League last night. There were some really funny parts to it, but it's still uneven overall. Sadly, I think a lot of the FF stuff is the least funny bits of the show.

I like the show, but it seems that they are trying way to hard to be funny. Comedy shouldn't seemed forced. Plus, its hard to like any if the characters. I probably wouldnt watch the show if Taco wasnt in it.

I thought Auto Focus was outstanding :shrug:Dafoe should have won an Oscar for that performance.
I liked Dafoe's performance in the film better than the film itself. Of course, I was kind of creeped out by the film because I used to watch Hogan's Heroes...
Yeah, I used to love Hogan's Heroes.

I've only watched 5 or 6 episodes, but Taco is the only reason to watch it. Completely carries the show IMO.

Biutiful this is only the second Javier Bardem film (No Country) and the fourth Alejandro Inarritu film I have seen but I think these two are among the best in the business at what they do. Inarritu uses his characteristic slow revealing story line but unlike his other work (Babel, 21 Grams, and my favorite, Amores Perros) we are given only one story line and not many other threads that need to be interwoven into the main storyline. All the action centers around Bardem. And while he is the protagonist, and is overall a sympathetic one, we are frequently reminded that he is also deeply flawed and not necessarily a hero that the audience should root for.

There are obvious themes relating to racism and illegal immigration but Inarritu also uses some interesting techniques relating to reflections and shadows, and likely many other things that I missed, that offer the considerate viewer many opportunities to ponder and wax philosophic about after the film is over.

I have no problem recommending this for those of you who are appreciative of foreign cinema.

I want to see this. I've only seen Bardem in No Country for Old Men and Vicky Christina Barcelona, but I am extremely impressed with his abilities.

hombres - gots to be checkin "The Sea Inside" (Oscar winner where he and the miraculous Belén Rueda - from The Orphanage - just flat ####in tear it up, tho in the name of kind of a down story) & John Malkovich's directorial debut, "The Dancer Upstairs". both are better movies than NCFOM. the one where he got his 1st big notice as some gay cuban poet was overwrought for my tastes but those two get my guarondamtee.

Just added The Sea Inside to the queue. That looks good. Although I'll take your NCFOM comment with a grain of salt because I love that movie.

:goodposting: I wouldn't agree that they are better movies than NCFOM but I think he gives better performances in both. I also liked the other one you referenced, though, the name of which I can't remember now either.Chaka, that was a perfect review of Biutiful. Couldn't agree more.

I dont know if you started from the beginning or not, but I thought it got better as the season went along and that the 2nd season was even better. I agree with the FF stuff being the least fuuny parts, but the show really starts to just feel like a show about 4 friends being jags and FF is really just the backdrop. I thought the FF content was pretty minimal by the 2nd season. Taco is definitely my favorite but Ruxin and Kevin I think are pretty funny too.

Madama Butterfly

Took my mom to see a an HD broadcast of Puccini's famous opera originally performed at the New York Metropolitan Opera. I am a Puccini fan, and I'd never had a chance to see his most popular work. Very beautiful and tragic. Deadwood fans would have noticed that the lead male role is named Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton.

Battle: Los Angeles - If for some bizarre reason you go into this expecting Lawrence of Arabia you're gonna hate it. However if you go into this expecting a human v alien throw down (like you should) it's a near perfect film. It delivers exactly what I want from this kind of film. In the same way that I enjoy Starship Troopers I would happily watch this again and again if it is on.

Just Go With It

Grown ups was bad, this was worst. It's loooooooooooonnnnnnnng and not funny. I know these are a money machine for him but Sandler really needs to give up acting in these and try some more dramatic range. If he just produced movies for his buddies I think we would have a lot funnier material.

2/5

What's to pay attention to? First two minutes sets the scene, then you get 12-15 minutes of character development (which couldn't be easier as they are all complete stereotypes) then 90 minutes of street to street fighting with the aliens (with about 7 minutes total of shlocky human interest thrown in) before the climactic confrontation with "the brain bug".Pure awesomeness.

The creatures and aliens are always what fascinate me the most. When it comes to this type of movie I spend almost the entire time squinting at the screen trying to get the best mental image. This used to be so much easier to do before all the CGI crap we have now. Seemed like to save money there is like a fog around the aliens every time they are on screen. That and the fact that it was 3 am and I was drifting in and out of sleep didn't help much either.I guess the crappy visuals and shoddy camera work wasn't doing much for me, but my expectations were very low.

Actually it doesn't play out like that for the whole film. One of the reasons I like this (as I did Starship Troopers and, to a lesser extent, much lesser, Skyline) is that they give us plenty of clear shots of the aliens. The fighting opens in a fog and the first encounter is harried so we don't get to see much at all, which I think is intentional (Film 101: don't reveal too early) but after that you get plenty of full frontal alien.

Starship Troopers

What a hilarious movie. I've seen it about six times now, and it hasn't lost its charm. Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards are two of the worst actors on the planet, and they get to chew up some terrible dialogue here. The movie's even funnier if you think of it as a parody of classic American WW2 films.

The production values are not as light as ST (everything is ST was well lit and crisp, BLA has more of a Black Hawk Down grittiness to the film quality and camera work) and the dialogue isn't as campy but it is definitely hilariously melodramatic at times ("You're my little marine" :lmao: ) and very entertaining. I still take ST over BLA in a draft (it's probably not even close) but BLA is definitely worth it for those that like the genre.

The sequels look terrible, but I will never tire of the original. Paul Verhoeven is the bomb.

Oh, and I love how Gary Busey Jr. plays the violin in this movie. That's less realistic than Denise Richards being a pilot.

starting season 2 of "party down" now. it's really kind of fun. great guest actors pop up in each episode to pair with the fine ensemble cast. season 2 even has kristen bell.

Both sequels were pretty awful. One of them was marginally less awful than the other but that mostly had to do with the fact that I enjoy looking at Jolene Blalock.

Very underrated. If you're looking for something silly, check out Comedy Central's Workaholics. Underneath all the dumb is some hidden clever.

I certainly hope so, if you got through them and weren't drunk or stoned (preferably both) I would be sincerely worried about your mental health.Or at least more worried than I already am.

She's cute, fo sho.

Having over 40 plane hours within five days, after having traveled a lot anyway recently, made my options awfully sad at some point. :(

The Adjustment Bureau: Made it 30 minutes in before giving up on this one.

Barney's Version: Made it 20 minutes into this one.

Somewhere: About 30 minutes of this one. Did Sofia Coppola make every scene last about twice as long as it should in Lost in Translation? If she did, it worked there. It failed miserably in this one.

Unknown: This movie was awful, and I knew it would be awful, but they had me at "Bruno Ganz". At least entertaining enough to keep me watching through the entire movie, so it was better than the three above.

Cedar Rapids: Elicited exactly one mild chuckle from me.

True Grit: Some pretty varied opinions on this in the thread. I am right in the middle. I was kept interested, and I liked Jeff Bridges's performance a lot even if I needed subtitles for it half the time. Saw the original when very young so don't remember it, so I probably liked this better than if I were watching a remake of a beloved original. Didn't have quite the directing style I'd expect from the Coens, though there were a couple of breathtaking shots. I'd rate this between a 2.5 and a 3, but rounding down because of the lead character's distracting nostrils. 2.5/4

Blue Valentine: I think I have a weird fascination with Michelle Williams, and thought she was fantastic in this as always, as was Ryan Gosling. Sure, it's depressing, but that's right up my alley. What bothered me about the movie was that we saw the happy couple at the beginning of their relationship, and the unhappy couple at the end, but I really didn't get a sense of what happened in the middle to make her so entirely resentful of her husband. Yeah, I get that she wanted to do more with her life and that he was a bit unambitious, but that didn't seem enough to make her do a 180 on him, especially since it was evident all along who he was. So a bit unsatisfying in that regard, but still enough good stuff to give it a 3/4.

Exit Through the Gift Shop: Everyone has already seen and commented on this in the thread, so I'll have to go back and read those comments now. I didn't find this an especially well-put-together documentary, but I found the subject matter extremely compelling and enjoyed this movie very much. 3/4

So many movies appeal to people differently, I am rarely surprised when people disagree. But True Grit is a movie where I am shocked that people didn't like it as much as I did. I found it to be immensely entertaining.

Loved it. I'm wondering what you mean by, "I didn't find this an especially well-put-together documentary."
