Fast Five: Fasterer and Furioserer

I slam many action movies - and for good reason. Most of them stink. But here's an action flick that gets it right. Completely impossible, totally over the top, absolutely nonsensical, and definitely worth seeing.

...and by the way, just so you know, all of life's problems can be solved with cars. Just sayin'.

Ishtar

This movie has been all over HD Network this month.

If you went in without any knowledge of the history of the movie it would come off as a decent comedy with a few not so subtle political undertones.

Obviously, they cast against type with Hoffman playing charismatic and over-the-top, and Beatty playing shy and bumbling--and that is what sinks the movie. It was implausible that a tall, ridiculously good looking guy would be so clumsy, and the short ugly guy would be so suave. Every scene between the two felt strained and unconvincing.

If Beatty and Hoffman had played their natural types the movie would have felt a lot more authentic.

It seemed that that everyone involved was trying too hard, and that made the film ponderous.

Not a great film, but not one of the worst ever.
:goodposting: This wasn't nearly as bad as its reputation. Same IMO for Hudson Hawk.
I thought the same thing. I found that movie entertaining
Lol, I just happened to watch this yesterday morning thanks to Instant Watch. It was as awesome as I remember it being, one of those just way ahead of its time.

Super 8.....Really enjoyed it. From start to finish, the kid actors, all unknown really, dominate it and their dialogue/interactions are throughout were reminiscent of the Goonies and Stand By Me to me. The story kept me intrigued, I thought they revealed the story/info at a perfect pace, and that helped keep the last act as interesting as it was. Saw it with my 14yr old sister, and 53yr old mother, and we all liked it. It definitely spans ages and genres, but it was just very well done all around when it comes down to it....8/10

The Kings Speech: Overrated. Great performances but just not that interesting/entertaining. Will he or won't he fix his stammering problem?!?! I wasn't exactly on the edge of my seat and we all knew pretty much exactly how it would play out. I don't get the over the top love for this. 3.5/5

Paul: Too many funny people in this to pass up even though it centered around an annoying alien with annoying Seth Rogan's voice. The movie would be far, far more enjoyable without him. Bateman, Wiig and Peeg were good. A could funny scenes (mostly Wiig) but mostly forgettable. 2.5/5

I know how you feel. Watching Black Hawk Down is such a waste of time because we just knew that, sure some guys were going to die, but the rest are going to make it out.And Lawrence of Arabia? Helloooo? Everyone knows he died in a motorcycle accident, so what's the point?

Don't even get me started on Passion of the Christ.

Haha? It followed a pretty typical formula. The story was pretty weak.

What are your feelings on the movie "Gandhi"?

I think you're trying to be funny here but it really isn't working.

I'm just trying to understand your criticism. You said "we pretty much know how it's going to turn out." That's not true. We knew EXACTLY how it was going to turn out because it really happened. You don't like historical dramas because they lack mystery?

Historical dramas can be great, this one just didn't do it for me. There was no suspense. No intrigue. Just a guy working on a rather boring problem which we knew he'd solved and go on to be king. His relationship with the Dr followed the exact same lines as a relationship does in a romantic comedy.

What makes them good? An entertaining story. Not a story about a guy with a speech impediment.

Green Lantern - After my geeky excitement of finally seeing this character on the big screen wore off, all I was left with was disappointment. Saying that Reynolds is a bad fit for the lead role is an understatement, but honestly that's not even near my top list of complaints.

I couldn't believe that with such a rich history of material to pull from, the makers of this film came up with a lazy, generic plot that had no intrigue whatsoever. I never felt at all like anyone was ever truly threatened, and it seemed to me that what little material actually was pulled from the comics merely served to insult the intelligence of the fans.

The acting in general was pretty shaky, but it's hard to fault most of the cast when the dialogue was one embarrassing cliche after another. However, the main actress (Lively?) was so downright horrendous that I felt physically uncomfortable every time she was onscreen. The only performance I enjoyed was from Mark Strong and I kept wishing he was featured more, as there was a noticeable spike in quality during his scenes.

I know there have been some solid comic book movies of late, but this isn't one of them. For those on the fence about seeing this, I'd say it's more on par with Fantastic Four, but about a half star worse. I'll give FF some credit for at least seeming to know that it was silly...

Worse than Fantastic Four? I didn't know that was humanly possible.

On the bright side, Tyler recently found some great pics of her

Hey now. The first one was kind of enertaining. The second one blew though.
Action films are all just so terrible these days, I think our standards are extremely low. And it's hard for me to quantify what works and what doesn't. I just saw Fast Five: Fasterer and Furiouserer last Friday, and I was immensely entertained. So who knows? I think the difference between a big, dumb action flick that's good and a big, dumb action flick that's bad mostly resides in the intent. It's almost like the viewer can subtly differentiate between the crass and the genuinely enthusiastic.

Ive seen you mention that you liked that movie multiple times, and I cant tell if you're serious about liking it or being sarcastic, because its just called Fast Five

I liked it a lot. But I still enjoy saying Fasterer and Furiouserer.

Has there ever been a well-written comic book movie?
:confused:Batman Begins and Dark Knight???? For starters
Begins was a clunky mess & DK's strength lay more in acting & production. I never minded the earlier Batman/Superman franchises all that much - tho i never thought they nailed it - but, starting with Spidey1 (perhaps the worst dramatic continuity i've seen in a major motion picture), the wheels really began to come off the bus. I've always been mystified by how Hollywood screws up such well-established templates so consistently badly.

Have they screwed them up? I'd argue they nailed it. By writing at a level that can be appreciated by 13 year old boys, these films are guaranteed to rake in a lot of money. I'd call that success.

Writing wise, I defintiely think Batman Begins is the better of the 2, so I dont know what to say to that.I probably wouldnt call any of the Spiderman movies "well written", but the first 2 were at least good and entertaining. The first Iron Man I thought was well written, as well as the Hulk with Ed Norton. Outside of those, Id be reaching for more to say that were well written. I wasnt impressed with any of the 4 X-Men movies Ive seen, but the new one is supposed to be good.

Definitely. I don't think any fan of literature would say that Iron Man was great writing. But there's a script that propels the story very well.

I actually watched it for the 2nd time last week on FX. When I saw the 2nd Iron man, I thought it was good but didnt compare to the first. After watching the first one again, I remembered why. I pretty sure I put it right below both Batman's as the best superhero movie of recent memory (or ever?).

I thought Iron Man was excellent. I can't complain about anything in that movie. What vexes me is the hate for Iron Man 2. The sequel was largely the same in tonality and scope. So were people expecting more of the same, or a radical departure?

Thanks to whoever recommended Kill the Irishman. Solid entertaining movie. Just slightly over-the-top at times but well made and gritty. It's sort of what I expected to see when I watched Boomtown Saints but sadly didn't get.

My only complaint...It needs more Walken. 3/5

Really enjoyed the Doors doc, When You're StrangeAnyone even mildly interested in the band will like this. Filled with some incredible footage but I wish they gave more time to Jim's life and death in Paris. What an amazing and fast rise and fall. 3/5

I think youre saying that in general, not directing it at me, about the Iron Man 2 hate. I liked it a lot, just didnt feel as good as the 1st one. Im a sucker for backstory and the rise to fame/recognition/hero, etc., so thats probably the biggest reason why I prefer the first (and why I have trouble saying Dark Knight is better than Batman Begins). Also, since I think my review got overlooked because of Cliff and Andy's extremely interesting debate on hitorical movies, I think Super 8 plays out nicely as a comic book movie (sans superhero).

This is near the top of my queue. Extremely stoked to see it.

Yes, I was referring to the surprising backlash by others directed at Iron Man 2.
