Funny- I thought the books were pretty pedestrian... even for the adolescent set. Great concept though. I actually prefer the movies to the books, as I usually do with Crighton movies (his books are/were painfully DanBrownesque formulaic). I only read the first two though... so... well... I'm still going to judge the whole series based on that, so there you go.Mrs. Dogg tried to watch the movies with my son. And their complaints were that 1) They were too scary, and 2) the movies were too sensational and they didn't capture the magic of the books. Now, I understand that this is a common book-to-movie complaint. But Mrs. Dogg loves the books, and she was disappointed with the movies. What the hell is going on with this movie series?! Havent read the books, watched the first couple of movies, quit in the middle of the third because - like everything Hollywood touches - the sequels were going away from story in the name of CGI. I've looked in on the others when theyve been on the tube & it's been more of the same. Now, they got ads out for the last in the series & the previews have the look of a freakin horror movie. Did the book series similarly devolve or has the movie series resorted to this as the only remaining spectacle? My son loves the books, but he's a bit young for the movies. Years ago, I tried to watch the first movie. But I couldn't stomach all the nonsensical gibberish. But this is certain: if my son was steeped in the movies, I'm sure I'd appreciate them. After all the stories are iconic and the actors are top notch.'El Floppo said:This kind of shocks me.The books certainly aren't great works, but like Crighton books- they translate pretty easily into movies. I've actually enjoyed seeing them in theaters- and you know how rarely I get to theaters any more.'jdoggydogg said:I've never seen the Potter movies. Still, Rickman is the bomb. totally disagree. The Harry Potter movies aren't very good for someone who hasn't read the books.
I like this one. What are these for again??
Like I mentioned earlier, I don't think anyone in their right mind would consider Harry Potter with great literature. But when you read great children's authors like Roald Dahl and Astrid Lindgren, you form an appreciate for the genre.Funny- I thought the books were pretty pedestrian... even for the adolescent set. Here's a movie where all the complaints I've read about it are well reasoned. But I'm still glad I saw it.Sucker Punch:
Cut down to it's core, the movie has a pretty decent central plot of a girl retreating to a fantasy land to deal with what she is going through as an abusive step father throws her into a mental asylum and she is due to be lobotomized. However, this plays as a stupid, braindead version of Pan's Labyrinth with ####ty CGI. I know I have low tolerance for most CGI, but I thought the action scenes looked terrible. Horrible slo-mo cartoonish graphics that made the movie look like a cut scene from Resident Evil or something. Can't imagine anybody over the age of 13 or who have discovered the world outside of their parent's basement thinking this movie was good. 2/10

thread. was also a couple comments here last wkend, i think. So no one else has seen Super 8???![]()
Youre missing out. Its worth seeing in theaters. Tell your kids Cars 2 will be better on DVD and go see Super 8
Thanks wikkid, I guess I shouldve done a search, but I didnt remember anyone reviewing it in here. I saw it last weekend, and no one responded to my review, so thats what lead to my last post.Cosjobs - Im surprised about your complaints. Now ET came out before I was born, and I see what you say that it was a homage to Spielberg films of that period, but I felt it stood on its own as a different movie. For your specific complaints, I didnt feel any of them. In the first scene, they tell the viewer the main kid's dad is a terrible father. I thought there was a grey area in the middle for sure. Its hard to differentiate his feelings of responsibility as a dad vs cop, but I thought there was a grey area. I didnt notice anything regarding the sound. I thought the fat kid/director had plenty of charisma. Thats probably youre biggest complaint that confuses me. Kid was great.Super 8
I was really looking forward to this, so I went out and caught the midnite showing last night. I was hoping that it was going to recreate the magic of the old Speilberg/Amblin movies I remember so fondly. The entire film felt like an homage to those films, attempting to catch the art direction, tone, and focus, and doing commendable job. It worked out ok as a movie and I pretty much liked it, but it did not have nearly the impact its predecessors had. Maybe that's because I have changed so much I can no longer appreciate it the way I once had, or maybe it was just not in the same league as the earlier ones.
My main beefs were: the father of the protagonist was just too non-stop of a ####/jerk. I see that a lot in movies now, a family member being portrayed absolutely black and then at the end of the film they are really just a super guy. A little grey in the second act would be helpful. Also, most of the scares were when the director cheated with sound at deafening levels. Its one thing to scare me because something pops out of the darkness, its another thing to jolt me out of my seat with sheer noise. Finally I did not like the casting of the boy director. A fat kid was fine, but couldn't he have a little bit of charisma?
Overall, pretty good, despite my long complaints, I just had such high hopes. Go in with lowered expectations and you should enjoy.

Is detritus those popcorn seed covers that get stuck in your teeth? Hate that -

I have been hesitant with this one because I hear it is pretty darn depressing. I'll move it up my list.Blue Valentine
Fantastic. I've reviewed many a B movie and many an action flick, and I'll reiterate my love for a vast many genres. But this movie is right in my wheelhouse. Let's face it: many movies are written and produced with the intention that a high school kid could enjoy. Blue Valentine is written for adults. There's no fluff here. Only a stark, beautiful examination of a crumbling family. Ryan Gosling and Michele Reynolds are perfect here. Blue Valentine is one of the best movies I've seen in the last five years. High recommended if you are tiring of the typical Hollywood detritus.
It is sad but I wouldn't say depressing. Very real.BTW, jdd, since I have a crush on her I have to correct you and say it's Michelle Williams.I have been hesitant with this one because I hear it is pretty darn depressing. I'll move it up my list.Blue Valentine

Fair enough, I can see us having different reaction to the characters (father and kid director). I really wanted to like the director, but I just felt they did not develop his positive stuff enough to balance his flaws. But again, that could just be my reaction more than actuality. On the other hand, every time I was "startled" it was because of a huge jump in decibels, rather than what was happening on the screen. Not a huge deal I guess, but it cheapened it to me, compared to an on-screen event that scares me.Thanks wikkid, I guess I shouldve done a search, but I didnt remember anyone reviewing it in here. I...I owe you at least that. But i wont plead my case. I wont search down the symposial email i've sent to all my young standup proteges which breaks down the 214 choices the Great Zero makes during The Producers' first ten minutes in forging the greatest scene of performance in film history. I want to, I really want to, but i cant escape the feeling that, no matter what i say to you or how you reply, it will just *choke* never be the same....:( Mine, too. i saw both this and "pre" some time ago. i think the acting is better in this but i liked "pre" more. something about leto and armey worked.watched the first "red riding hood" of the BBC trilogy last night. good but not great. i felt like there was a soderbergh influence there but didn't serve the movie well. looks good and pretty well done by the actors. it's just a little thin in the script.Without Limits: I'm not old enough to remember him, but I have a lot of interest in the story of Prefontaine. Of the two biopics about him, I prefer "Prefontaine" instead. Good acting by Billy Crudup and Donald Sutherland, though. 3/5
You need to see The Wire.I still wonder how the Sopranos would have differed had the mother not passed away. The Sopranos - I gave up renting this about halfway thru Season 4, but my neighbor lent me Seasons 5 & 6 recently & it had been 5 yrs, so whatda#@&%?! I'm terribly disappointed that they never established a Shakespeare-history-play structure of mob hierarchies, felt that mood & consistency suffered from the tug o war for the soul of the show between the three big writer/producers (Chase, Winter, Weiner) and have wished premature death on AJ from the moment i saw him - especially since all that angst & ####upery never resulted in having Tony consider giving him a role in the Family as a way of straightening him up. Yet I couldnt take my eyes from the screen - maybe not the best, but easily the most compelling television (granted, i havent seen The Wire) of our time.
it had its moments of greatness and certainly was a game-changer in a lot of ways. still, all things considered, i would rather watch "the wire" than "the sopranos".Sopranos was merely very good after the second season
I think the first two seasons of The Sopranos were a lot better than the remaining seasons. Still, a mediocre episode of this show is far better than most TV shows. Love The Sopranos. But The Wire wins because it was far more consistent.
