About to watch The Score with Marlon Brando, Ed Norton, and Bobby DeNiro.
I don't remember much about this movie. Let me know if it's worth re-watching.Be sure to watch the extras on the DVD if you have them. They show Brando and De Niro doing the same lines a few times, and they're pretty unique with each take. Really helps shed light on their abilities.

the thing to remember when watching this film is that brando wanted to do his part pretty much in drag. it makes the film much, much more entertaining than it really is.
gtfo :lmao:I didn't knwo that. and even in purely retrospect, it's true.I"m a bit ashamed to say that I'll still say buy-bye on occasion the way Norton does when he's "in character".

I know what you're saying. Although I must say the new trailer looks pretty sweet.
i am not swayed by the trailer at all. the recent CGI-only films - "beowulf", "polar express" come to mind - leave me cold. this has travishamockery written all over it, i think.
I know what you're saying. But "How To Train Your Dragon" is CGI-only, and it's outstanding.
Yeah, but I'm pretty sure- based on the films sf mentions- that he's underwhelmed by the motion-capture technology in those particular CGI films. the characters are all dead behind the eyes, despite moving around quasi-realistically. "Dragon" is a pure CGI animated film more in the lines of non-CGI animation.I'm with sf about those first two, and bit with Tintin too- but I admit that the trailer won me over by the end.

bit i read was that he showed up for the first day of shooting in drag and make-up. frank oz, the director, was like "WTF?!" it kind of killed the working relationship the two had for the rest of the film.

The Company Men- giant corporation seeing it's second year of losses starts laying off everyone in sight just to 'look' like their doing something and goose the stock price. First layoffs include the rising star regional sales director (ably performed by one Ben Affleck) and the movie follows his struggles in looking for a new job and his loss of identity. Another wave of layoffs happen and we see what happens to the lifelong employee who started on the factory floor and worked his way into an executive office (Chris Cooper), dealing with the reality that even though his life seemed to end the world is going on without him. Meanwhile the CEO of the company (Craig T Nelson), happy the layoffs are finally getting the stock price up, can't wait for the new corporate building to be constructed so his office will triple in size. Excellent performances also turned in by Tommy Lee Jones and an older and gruff looking Kevin Coster. Pretty sobering movie about the current state of capitalism. 3.5/5

Two hours you'll wish you'd spent doing something else.
anything else. what a crapfest of a film.
You guys can't be serious? It's a standard genre heist pic with arguably the best three actors from the past three generations. Just cool to see these guys on screen together. It's a pretty straight forward movie yet none of them mailed it in. Movie goes by briskly and not really any major suspension-of-disbelief moments that kill these type of flicks.

Need to turn in your man card if you don't like this one.

 I liked it. I've found Andy Dufresne to have odd tastes in movies. Especially the part about not liking anything made before 1990.
:goodposting: I think Andy is one of the hardest to peg around here as far as where they are coming from with movies.

If you haven't seen it yet, watch Oldboy on Netflix Instant. It's a 2004 Japanese film (with voiceover). A film professor pal recommended this and I was blown away.

The premise = a businessman is inexplicably kidnapped one night and imprisoned in a hotel-like room for 15 years. Then he's just as inexplicably released, setting off a series of insane events as he seeks revenge on his mysterious nemesis.

It's REALLY well told and very well shot. Lots of violence, sex, etc. with remarkably deep character development for an action flick. Definitely watch it.

It's the quintessential film that shows what a hack a once great actor had become. It is so painfully obvious that Brando's phoning it in that it's really uncomfortable.

It's 1975. And yes, I can't be pigeonholed. Another example: I watched the completely implausible Law Abiding Citizen this weekend and thought it was pretty entertaining.

Brando is barely in it. Maybe it's uncomfortable for you to see the fat and old Brando. It's not a memorable part by any stretch but definetly not a hack job. Hack job is something like DeNiro in 15 Minutes or Showtime.

deniro has been largely mailing it in over the last 10-15 years. brando's last good role? maybe "don juan demarco" back in '95.

no other film in the history of cinema has been as disappointing to me as The Score.I remember driving over the mountains from Tahoe to reno to catch it on opening night. With the talent on board, both in front of and behind the camera, I was giddy with anticipation. Is was also my favorite genre. But it was so bland, tepid and mediocre, that the my colossal disappointment registered the greatest gap I ever experienced between expectation and reality.

I have not watched it since, and based of positive notes from some folks I respect here, I will give it another go with bottom of the barrel expectations and see if it goes down better.

Another in a long line of movies that are ruined because they have to bend logic in order to have the "good guy" win

Predator

Terminator

I know De Niro's been choosing a lot of bad movies. But really, What Just Happened is excellent and very recent.

Those are to obvious. Even Chaz Bono knows those are prerequisites. A movie like The Score is how you catch someone slipping.

Nah. The Score is a decent heist flick, but it's not nearly as good as Mamet's Heist. The Score isn't mantastic enough to be a man card movie.

Winter's Bone: Took me about 4 viewings to finally make it through this. The lead actress had a great performance. Overall however, I thought the movie really dragged in parts.

The Pursuit of Happyness: Kept falling asleep during this one. Again, very good acting by the lead, but I wasn't really entertained.

At the time Indy surrendered to Belloq, and chose not to blow up the Ark with the rocket launcher, he didn't know that it would kill all the Nazis. At that moment, Indy decided to give up. He chose to fail his mission.

As far as Belloq's ritual, I think that was a reaction to Indy's meddling, but I don't remember for sure. I may have been influenced by an old Cracked article.
According to the Indy Wiki, the original plan was to fly the Ark to Berlin, but Indy destroying the plane (after fighting that guy who got killed by the propeller) forced Belloq to take it away via truck, then eventually by boat.
INT. WELLS OF THE SOULS

Shliemann smiles down at Indy.

SHLIEMANN

I'm afraid we must be going now, Dr.

Jones. Our prize is awaited in Berlin.

But I do not wish to leave you down in

that awful place...

(he give a sign)

...all alone.

Belzig and the Nazi move Marion to the hole and, to Belloq's

surprise, push her in.
Now a new figure approaches the German Mechanic. It is

Gobler; he yells to the mechanic, indicating the plane.

GOBLER

Get is gassed immediately! It has

an important cargo to take out!

In the distance, the Flying Wing lands and rolls toward

the men. Gobler spins and heads back toward the main camp,

which is hidden from view by a rise. Indy and Marion watch

him go.

INDY

When the Ark gets loaded, we're al-

ready going to be on that plane.
Belloq and Shliemann arrive just as the sec-

ond fuel truck blows up. The concussion knocks many of

the observers flat. Belloq, Shliemann and Gobler watch

the scene in alarm.

SHLIEMANN

Sabotage!

BELLOQ

We must get the Ark away from this

place immediately!

SHLIEMANN

(to Gobler)

Have it put on the truck. We'll fly

out of Cairo.

Horrible Bosses

I really wanted to get out of the sweltering heat (105F) this afternoon and heard surprisingly decent reviews for this, so I gave it a shot.

Overall, for a summer adult comedy, I liked it. Less than the Hangover, the Greek or even bridesmaids, but still a pretty solid summer fare with some good laughs. The three leads were very engaging and I enjoyed spending time with them. Spacey, Farrel and Anniston were uniformly fun and creepy, but Spacey definitely took top prize in the horrible boss category.

not great, but more than a diversion, I recommend it

3/5 stars

Looks like a solid rental.

Wall Street: Moneny Never Sleeps

I loved the original, one of my favorite 100 films. I had somewhat low expectations going in with this being a sequel and all, but was pleasantly surprised. $ Never Sleeps is a very entertaining movie. I've heard complaints that the moview was too long, but it went by very fast for me, and I couldn't believe it actually lasted over 2 hours.

Douglas is very solid. Easily the best acting job I've seen LeBouf pull off. A very timely movie considering current day events. I really like this movie.

Bruce Campbell joins Twitter, confirms Evil Dead remake.

We’ve been hearing rumors that a remake of Sam Raimi’s starter horror film Evil Dead might be in the works. That’s not quite as bad as it sounds, since it’s Raimi that’s rumored to be remaking it. Tonight we got confirmation that, yep, it’s really happening. That confirmation comes from Bruce Campbell, star of the original Evil Dead series.

Bruce joined twitter last week and immediately started posting and answering fan questions. When asked if the Evil Dead remake was still happening he responded, “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.” Ash seems to know what he’s talking about.

So it’s happening and from what we’re hearing, happening soon. Dread Central claims Raimi is headed to Detroit right now, where he’ll begin work on the Evil Dead redo. They claim it’ll be a small, low-budget indie in the mold of the original, low-budget Evil Dead movie.

Despite some poor reviews, I am looking forward to seeing this movie. It's on my DVR.

First official trailer for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

I thought the first movies was disappointing. The second looks like more of the same.
i liked the first one well enough. it bogs down like most ritchie and big hollywood films do. RDJr makes it fun, if not interesting.
I really enjoy Downey. But being a fan of the Jeremy Brett BBC Sherlock series, I think the movie was too fluffy.

completely different genres. BBC/Masterpiece school vs Ritchie/Hollywood. i don't think we'll be seeing guy helming any Masterpiece projects anytime soon. although it would be a great mash-up opportunity...

I was surprised by how little i hated Ritchie's Holmes. Of course, i didnt see it til my expectations were ground down to the point that anything less ridiculous than that inane fisticuffs scene would have improved my impression. As a purist, i had intended on boycotting it, but Frostilicus sent it to me amongst a treasure trove of DVDs in return for a kindness, so i watched. Not only did i find a way to enjoy it, but my major concern - that the franchise would cheapen a cultural institution - was largely assuaged. The sequel will be a larger challenge. I know from my cousin's recent experience directing Pirates4 that producers use the huuuuge backend $$ involved in sequels to get their grubby fingers on projects in ways no one would ever let them in originals in order to give ascendancy to market-tested over creation decisions. There were a lot of bitter pills which powerful creative people swallowed on P4 (and now its looking like cousin & Depp et al WILL be shooting P5&6 late in '12) with profit participation in a $billion-grosser as incentive & that scares me. Though the hiring of the great Stephen Fry as Mycroft is a step in the right direction, i still worry about the Smartest Man in Cinema History being dumbed down for an entire generation by the series.

The movie was entertaining. I'm not claiming it sucked. But I can't help but compare it to the vastly superior new BBC version of Sherlock set in the modern era.

Tried watching the first one 4 or 5 times and didn't make it more than 5 minutes at any point. Not a good movie, imo.
