First official trailer for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

I thought the first movies was disappointing. The second looks like more of the same.
i liked the first one well enough. it bogs down like most ritchie and big hollywood films do. RDJr makes it fun, if not interesting.
I really enjoy Downey. But being a fan of the Jeremy Brett BBC Sherlock series, I think the movie was too fluffy.
completely different genres. BBC/Masterpiece school vs Ritchie/Hollywood. i don't think we'll be seeing guy helming any Masterpiece projects anytime soon. although it would be a great mash-up opportunity...
I was surprised by how little i hated Ritchie's Holmes. Of course, i didnt see it til my expectations were ground down to the point that anything less ridiculous than that inane fisticuffs scene would have improved my impression. As a purist, i had intended on boycotting it, but Frostilicus sent it to me amongst a treasure trove of DVDs in return for a kindness, so i watched. Not only did i find a way to enjoy it, but my major concern - that the franchise would cheapen a cultural institution - was largely assuaged. The sequel will be a larger challenge. I know from my cousin's recent experience directing Pirates4 that producers use the huuuuge backend $ involved in sequels to get their grubby fingers on projects in ways no one would ever let them in originals in order to give ascendancy to market-tested over creation decisions. There were a lot of bitter pills which powerful creative people swallowed on P4 (and now its looking like cousin & Depp et al WILL be shooting P5&6 late in '12) with profit participation in a $billion-grosser as incentive & that scares me. Though the hiring of the great Stephen Fry as Mycroft is a step in the right direction, i still worry about the Smartest Man in Cinema History being dumbed down for an entire generation by the series.
The movie was entertaining. I'm not claiming it sucked. But I can't help but compare it to the vastly superior new BBC version of Sherlock set in the modern era.
There is no comparison. I have never looked fwd to ANYTHING from Hollywood the way i presently am toward the '12 seasons of Sherlock & Downton Abbey from the Beeb. The Brett will always be the standard (i'm packing for a move & am keeping very few of the 100s of videocassettes ive recorded over 15 yrs here, but my compleat Holmes was first in the box), but i was delighted by the BBC update.

I was very skeptical when I heard the words, "...remaking Sherlock in the modern era." But I love the series, and I think the dude who plays Sherlock is incredible.

I've figured out the problem I have with Ritchie's Sherlock:Ritchie does a lot of things well. His editing, photography, pacing, and frenetic style set him apart from most directors. But with Ritchie's Sherlock, there's no menace. It feels like a cartoon - which is totally fine since Ritchie does that very well. I just think the movie could have used 20% less flash and 20% more substance.

i liked the new Sherlock at first blush but it settled into a more conventional program. it's still very good but less a re-imagining of Sherlock than it is of "House" or "CSI". For Guy's part,I suspect he accomplished exactly what he had in mind. Nothing more and nothing less.

For my trip to Kentucky for the 4th of July weekend, I loaded up some of my favorite movies and re-watched them on the airplane on my iPod:

The Departed

I've seen this about seven times now. Every time I watch The Departed, the more ridiculous the negative reviews seem. There's only problem with this movie: it was directed by the dude that gave us Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas. Those are three of the greatest films in cinema history. Should The Departed be ranked as highly? No. But this is like blasting Tennessee Williams because he's not Shakespeare. Much like Casino, The Departed will always suffer from being a lesser Scorsese film. The Departed is crisply written, every single performance is pitch perfect, and Nicholson delivers an iconic role as good as any he's ever played. DiCaprio, Damon, Baldwin, Martin Sheen, Wahlberg and Farmiga all nail their roles.
The resolution to that movie that's performed by a bit character that we'd barely seen up until that point was so jarring to me that it ruined the movie completely.
No more jarring than DiCaprio getting capped and the elevator scene panning out. The last half hour of the movie was crazy and the final scene didnt feel out of place to me.
Except for the rat.
What rat?
I think the final shot is looking out the balcony towards the city, and a ####in' rat runs across the railing of the balcony. Completely cheesy way to end a great movie (I've come around quite a bit on this movie since the first viewing)
I knew what he was saying, didnt have a problem with the rat. And certainly nothing as miniscule as that would be reason for me to dislike a movie. Really just had a laugh at it the first time and brushed it off. Glad you like the movie now though

About to watch The Score with Marlon Brando, Ed Norton, and Bobby DeNiro.
Two hours you'll wish you'd spent doing something else.
anything else. what a crapfest of a film.
You guys can't be serious? It's a standard genre heist pic with arguably the best three actors from the past three generations. Just cool to see these guys on screen together. It's a pretty straight forward movie yet none of them mailed it in. Movie goes by briskly and not really any major suspension-of-disbelief moments that kill these type of flicks.

Need to turn in your man card if you don't like this one.
:goodposting: I like this movie a good bit, and I dont see what there is to actually consider it bad. Some said Brando mailed it in, okay, he's in the movie for what, 5-8minutes overall?! I thought DeNiro was solid in a role unlike others where he doesnt take risks and is thorough, and Norton comes back with the Primal Fear/multiple personality angle and thought he was great. I didnt think people disliked this movie until reading this thead tonight.

And for the best 3 actors of 3 generations, I probably wouldve agreed with you on Ed Norton a decade ago or when this movie came out, but Id undoubtedly say Dicaprio has surpassed him.

Wall Street: Moneny Never SleepsI loved the original, one of my favorite 100 films. I had somewhat low expectations going in with this being a sequel and all, but was pleasantly surprised. $ Never Sleeps is a very entertaining movie. I've heard complaints that the moview was too long, but it went by very fast for me, and I couldn't believe it actually lasted over 2 hours.Douglas is very solid. Easily the best acting job I've seen LeBouf pull off. A very timely movie considering current day events. I really like this movie.
Money Never Sleeps was a nice surprise as a sequel. Douglas has been selective but solid in his recent movies. I thought he was fantastic in King of California, maybe my favorite role of his.More importantly, if you think this is LeBoufs best acting, I highly recommend seeing A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints. In the Inception thread tonight, I said that its 1 of the few movies that Ive seen where I was in awe while watching it. AGTRYSaints is one of the few other movies where I felt the same way. Lebaeof isnt really the reason why its great, but he's part of it. Its a true story that is just phenomenal overall. Its in my top 5 of movies from the 00's

Insidious

I had no intention of ever watching this, but it was about the only thing at Redbox I had not already seen.

Probably because of my rock-bottom expectations, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Its more like Poltergeist than anything else I can think of More of a tribute to 70s-80s SciFi/horror than Super 8 was, even though it never wore it on its sleeve like 8 did.

Minimal blood, no decapitations, strong leads & goofy sidekick ghosthunters combine for quite an entertaining 90 minutes.

The last five minutes seemed tacked on and counterproductive, but other than that, I really appreciated the effort and the technique used to deliver it.

3.6/5 stars

Bruce Campbell joins Twitter, confirms Evil Dead remake.

We’ve been hearing rumors that a remake of Sam Raimi’s starter horror film Evil Dead might be in the works. That’s not quite as bad as it sounds, since it’s Raimi that’s rumored to be remaking it. Tonight we got confirmation that, yep, it’s really happening. That confirmation comes from Bruce Campbell, star of the original Evil Dead series.

Bruce joined twitter last week and immediately started posting and answering fan questions. When asked if the Evil Dead remake was still happening he responded, “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.” Ash seems to know what he’s talking about.

So it’s happening and from what we’re hearing, happening soon. Dread Central claims Raimi is headed to Detroit right now, where he’ll begin work on the Evil Dead redo. They claim it’ll be a small, low-budget indie in the mold of the original, low-budget Evil Dead movie.
I am on board with this. Love the original for what it is, but still would be fun to see an update of this - even with a limited budget.

If Raimi wasn't directing, I wouldn't be interested. But the thought of seeing this in the theater makes me all atwitter.

Agreed. Has there been any other 'reboots' that have come out where the original director was the one directing the update?

not exactly reboots, as they were never franchise films but both "the vanishing" and "funny games" were redone for hollywood by their original directors.

I did not know that. Haven't seen Funny Games yet.

Rango:

I give this one props for originality and action scenes/animation. However, it does get a knock from me for being so dark and sort of unpleasant to watch. This is one that I am glad that I watched it before I let the son watch it, as this one is definitely on the older side of the PG rating. Probably wait a couple years to watch this one with him. This movie is still worth the watch, and I had fun but I think that Pixar and Dreamworks have been setting the bar so high lately I walked away from this one thinking it had no heart or payoff in the end - it just was. Oh yeah, I completely thought that was Clint Eastwood... 6/10.

Ridley Scott was about to direct an Alien prequel, but it morphed into something new.

Watched Ep 1 of the BBC Sherlock Holmes. Really enjoyed it. British television is just so much smarter than American television. I had a bit of a problem with how they wrapped up at the end following the climax but overall, I'll definitely be adding this to my very short list of must watch television.

i'll also say this about the new sherlock series: i *hate* this moriarty.

Maybe a couple of lesser known if you are looking for funny that I recently rented:

Summer Heights High Season 1- Summer Heights High is a Logie Award-winning[1] Australian television mockumentary series written by and starring Chris Lilley. It is a parody of high-school life epitomised by its three protagonists: effeminate and megalomaniacal "Director of Performing Arts" Mr G; self-absorbed, privileged teenager Ja'mie King; and disobedient, vulgar Tongan student Jonah Takalua. All played by Lilley, the characters never interact. It lampoons Australian high school life and many aspects of the human condition and is filmed in a documentary style, with non-actors playing supporting characters. 7/10

The Life and Times of Tim Seasons 1 and 2 - The Life & Times of Tim is an HBO comedy animated television series, which premiered on September 28, 2008. The series was created by Steve Dildarian, and is about a hapless man in his mid 20s named Tim (Steve Dildarian) who lives in New York City with his girlfriend Amy. Throughout the series, Tim constantly finds himself in increasingly awkward situations in both his work and personal life.[1] The first season aired in 2008 and has since been aired in numerous countries, and has developed something of a cult following. 7.5/10

WAS an odd way to go - certainly no match for Eric Porter in the Brett series - but ive seen the kid in other Beeb stuff and he's an excellent actor. They more than make up for it with their Watson, though - Freeman (from the original "Office") is a perfect foil/partner. Best Watson i've seen & i've seen em all.

Masterpiece Mystery!: Sherlock: Series 1 ?

I watched Country Strong. I liked it a lot... so... definitely don't go see it.

Basically, I think if you like country music you will like this movie. If you don't, you probably won't.

I don't know how to explain it, but the a lot of the scenes had a very 'surreal' look to them. I gotta admit, they did surprise me with a few things at the end, but i'm not very good at picking up on stuff.

The Dilemma

Exactly two funny parts and a couple good renditions of the Herb Brooks speech. I guess it's better than the crap Sandler has been releasing.

2.5/5

Horrible Bosses

Laughed a lot. Good "R" rated comedy without any gross out humor I can remember, been a while since I've seen one of those. Leads play well off each other. Aniston's mouth is unbelievable, and it's awesome. Good to see Spacey back in "Swimming With Sharks" mood. This was a good film, not just made for laughs.

4/5

Brando is barely in it. Maybe it's uncomfortable for you to see the fat and old Brando. It's not a memorable part by any stretch but definetly not a hack job. Hack job is something like DeNiro in 15 Minutes or Showtime.
deniro has been largely mailing it in over the last 10-15 years. brando's last good role? maybe "don juan demarco" back in '95.
I know De Niro's been choosing a lot of bad movies. But really, What Just Happened is excellent and very recent.
:goodposting: Underated movie and DeNiro at his best.

I agree, although I think I inferred a meaning you didn't intend.

Invictus

Standard sports movie with Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon doesn't offer much innovation. But I enjoyed it.

However...

What was the deal with that horrific "Colorblind" song during the helicopter scene? That was straight out of a bad Disney movie.

Rufus Sewell (a personal favorite) is starring in a new Masterpiece Mystery on PBS starting Sunday night called Zen. He is a detective in Rome. Show has gotten very good reviews.

Cool. He was good in Dangerous Beauty.
Love that movie. He was also excellent in dark City, which is woefully underrated IMO
Did you ever listen to Ebert's commentary on the Dark City DVD? Pretty fun.

Did you ever listen to Ebert's commentary on the Dark City DVD? Pretty fun.
No. Interesting. Will have to check it out.

Super 8 - I purposely didn't ready any reviews before seeing it...I was quite pleased and told my brother afterwards it reminded me a lot of the goonies. Solid film...the ending felt a bit rushed and at times had the feel of "B" sci fi, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.

4/5

Rufus Sewell (a personal favorite) is starring in a new Masterpiece Mystery on PBS starting Sunday night called Zen. He is a detective in Rome. Show has gotten very good reviews.
Exxxxcellent. A month of Poirots/Marples has had me yearning for class warfare. I think Zen is a DaVinciCode-ish thing - Blighty was as excited about it as Sherlock, if i recall. Of course they were all abuzz about last summer's Kenneth Branagh Swedish mysteries and they turned out to be a snoregasbored. Something to break the summer viewing tedium anyway (although Animal Kingdom FINALLY became available on my RedBox - a report on that tonite).

I love Branagh, but he was woefully miscast as Wallander. Great series of mysteries, BTW, in written form. Also had Swedish TV versions that were far better than the Branagh ones.

He's a big fan of Dark City, and he dissects all the references to classic cinema.

Dark City is a pretty big cult hit. Id assume most of the regulars here would agree that its great.

The Dilemma

Exactly two funny parts and a couple good renditions of the Herb Brooks speech. I guess it's better than the crap Sandler has been releasing.

2.5/5
Saw this a week or 2 ago. Meant to make a post, but I guess I didnt because of how meh it was. Vince Vaughn carries it, and this movie is further proof that Kevin James isnt funny. 5/10 is pretty accurate.
