There's no difference between a 5 and 10 star ranking system. Each rank is just a multiple/divisor of two compared to the other.

Another Year

I'd call myself a Mike Leigh fan. Topsy-Turvy is one of my sentimental favorites, and Secrets & Lies and Abigail's Party are both very good. But Leigh really tests the view with Another Year. Acting is good, writing very good. The problem lies in the complete lack of any discernible plot. With Leigh, it's always about the subtext - which I enjoy. And yet, one can only watch these people babble on and on for so long. Another Year is well made - as is the case with all of Leigh's movies. But it's just dreadfully boring.

But what about the character with the sexual fetish/neurosis?I love Leigh- Naked, Secrets and Lies, Topsy-Turvy are all fantastic, IMO and I have a soft-spot for Life is Sweet and High Hopes... he had a pretty good run for me. But somewhere along the way I burned out on his usual plot lines. I think that's part of why Topsy-Turvy worked so well for me- it was a break, or at least a side-step from the typical character-driven social studies driven films into something more plot-driven.

Topsy Turvy is bar far his best movie for the reason you mentioned. This latest effort feels unscripted - which is a device that works in Curb Your Enthusiasm. But with Curb, there's always a plot line with some conflict. With Another Year, the conversations just go on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on...

I watched Avatar again in non-HD, and still enjoyed it. More than I expected on a rewatch. Without even seeing Rio I dont think Im going out on a limb by saying its much worse than Avatar.

That's cool. I just know I wouldn't like "The Last Samurai Dances With Pocahontas Smurf" without the 3D. You'd probably hate Rio. I thought they were about equally enjoyable.

This is going to be my main beef if/When Netflix separates. I have about 3,500 films and shows on there with a star rating and that is really the only thing I have to keep track of what I've even watched or how much I enjoyed it. The star system is an instant reminder that I haven't seen something yet or how much I enjoyed it if I had. Otherwise, I forget.

What do you mean, you people?

You people that can suffer through an entire movie like the one I mentioned above? If a movie gets rotten reviews, I won't watch it. If I think it sucks rocks within the first 15-20 minutes, I'll turn it off.

I gave the movie 15 minutes of my time because I was waiting for the show to come on after it and was reading as well, so not giving it my full attention. But even minimal attention yielded a pile of crap so big I had to laugh at the sheer awfulness of it all.

But Andy said a 6 on his scale sucked. The equivalent 3 on a 5 pt would be a solid good. I think the problem is most users of a 10 pt scale use it like the grading scale, where under 6 is fail and 7-10 is equal to 2-5 on a 5 pt. But there is no conformity on how it is sued so we have to get into the mind of a 10 point scal person to understand what they mean. And frankly, I don't really care how anyone else chooses to grade a film. And am not trying to lobby. I'm just saying until it will take me a while of seeing your scores before I know what you think. I use a #/5 because its pretty universally understood. Plus I can use decimals and really get very close to expressing exactly how I value a film.

Considering the movie, if it kept you interested you dont think it deserves a higher rating??I liked it a lot, was basically non-stop suspense. I could see how some people would get bored since the movie takes place in 1 scene/area basically, but if its keeps your interest, I dont see how you wouldnt enjoy it.

I thought it was great.

I recently saw this and also loved it. I thought it was extremely suspenseful. I was on the edge of my metaphorical chair for most of the movie.

Definitely. My son watches the animated series. From the bits I've seen, it's very good. There's a movie that deserves to be remade.

1 - Mankind is diminished by this movie's very existence. Ex: Human Centepede

2 - Horrible in every way, except that the story is less offensive. Ex: Shark Boy & Lava Girl

3 - Horrible in almost every way and probably a vanity project. Ex: Glitter or Gigli

4 - Usually a comedy that but ends up being irredeemably un-funny. Or an action movie with no internal logic. Or a kids movie with excessive profanity. Ex: Step Brothers/The Other Guys/Ant Bully/Terminator: Salvation/Troy

5 - You could see what they were trying to do, but nothing ended up working and you wanted it to end sooner rather than later(but you end up forgetting about it as soon as you turn it off). Ex: The DaVinci Code

6 - Not awful, but nothing too memorable and/or rewatchable either. Ex: Road To Perdition

7 - Hey! That was pretty good, and in a pinch I'd watch that again and enjoy it as much the 2nd time. Ex: Inglorious Basterds

8 - That was really good and I'll probably buy that one on Blu Ray because I'd watch that a few times. Ex: Memento/Inception, •Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

9 - I enjoyed that one and clearly that is one of the best movies in the genre. And/or it was likely groundbreaking. Ex: The Matrix, Black Hawk Down, Die Hard, Jaws

10 - Fits the criteria of level 9 rating, but adds something extra that makes it personal to me. Ex: Miller's Crossing, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars

HBO had something on last night be M. Night Sham about people trapped in an elevator with an old woman who was satan. I only caught the last 15 minutes but I must tell you that in those 15 minutes I determined that what I was watching might have been the biggest pile of movie dog poo ever created. How does he keep finding funds for movies? Do these things even go into the theaters anymore?

It's worth actively watching with him. Remarkable storytelling.

I like the Newsday rating system I grew up on.

4 stars is a classic.

Step Bros would get 2.5 stars.

Midnight Run would get 3.5.

Indiana Jones and Last Crusade got 4 stars if I remember. Might have gotten 3.5 stars.

4 is good, but 5 gives a little more nuance and flexibility. But at least if you are using a 4 star, I can understand your grading.

I guess I was thrown off a bit by your 6.5 is getting into insulting territory. I love seeing what other people's rating systems are. I THINK mine breaks down to something like this:

10/10: One of the best movies of all time - perfect or damn near perfect.

9/10: Great movie. Maybe not GOAT, but one of the best movies that came out that year/best of the decade.

8/10: Damn good movie. Equivalent of making a 'best of the year list' or one of the best of the genre.

7/10: Good movie. One that that I would watch a few more times, or that I like but know isn't that good, so a lot of guilty pleasures end up here.

6/10: Slightly above average. Probably would consider watching it 1-2 more times, but didn't get much out of it.

5/10: Average movie. OK, I got through it, but wouldn't pop it in again.

4/10: Below average movie. I made it through it, didn't like it, but could see something in it that I would still consider suggesting to others

3/10: Bad movie. Got through it, didn't like it, and didn't see anything to warrant suggesting to anybody else.

2/10: damn bad movie - couldn't get through it without using the FF button.

1/10: Terrible movie - had to turn it off.

What's the need to be so precise with a 1-10 scale? We all see so many movies differently.

4 star scales works well because we will all agree more. You know what a 4 star movie is as oppossed to a 3 star movie. Just a better barometer IMO.

Well, when people use a 4 star scale, they usually throw in the half a star. Not a lot of difference in having 8 levels for movie ratings and having 10 is there?

Oh yes. The first time I ever sat down to watch it with him, there was this touching scene with an old man weeping over the loss of his son. Incredibly touching.
