Horrible Bosses:

Wanted to mix in a little comedy with the horror movies. Ended up not really digging this one. Sure there were a few funny scenes, but after I got over the initial shock of a foul-mouthed Jennifer Aniston, for me the movie got stale for the last hour or so. Not in any rush to watch it again. 5/10.

I think this was the first time I saw all of the trailer for Hangover 2, and holy #### does that look terrible.

The Office:

I never look forward to popping in shows/movies after people telling me for years how funny it is and how much I HAVE to watch it. This is the rare exception when I am mad I didn't listen sooner. After starting about 3 weeks ago, I have plowed through the first 3 seasons. Hardly a bad episode in the bunch, and there is always something that cracks me up in each episode. Thought they made a mistake at the beginning of 3 by having the Conn. branch and the Penn. branch, as I didn't like the chemistry of the other branch, but that was corrected quick enough. I think I have heard that it has begun to tail off, but still looking forward to the next few seasons if they are able to keep up the humor.
The Office is hilarious. Hangover 2 looks awful.
The hipster hater in me would love to hate the American version of the office. I just can't. Even the one line from Creed each episode cracks me up. Jim and Pam are exhausting, but everyone knows that.
I'd go so far as to say the first bunch of seasons of the American Office were outstanding. It's really only in the last 2 or so years that's it's started to tail off, with last season and the current one being particularly bad. Saying Jim and Pam are exhausting is not near extreme enough, a more apt descriptor would be insufferable; at least since after the baby was born.

I loved the British Office. But this American iteration is every bit as good. At least until the last couple seasons.

Saw the last 20 minutes or so of Scott Pilgrim vs the World on HBO and did a lot of  :wtf: before eventually settling in and finding myself kind of liking the video-game anime pop-culture bizarreness of it. Enough so that I decided to watch it from the beginning on another night, when I caught the first 10 or so minutes (but not from the absolute beginning)... this time I found myself not so interested in the video-game anime pop-culture bizarreness which just felt overwrought and forced.

So... I know the movie was discussed in here- any recommendations as to whether it's worth a full watch (caveat- with a 3month old baby, my movie watching time is precious... I've been catching 20 or so minutes of this and that at night while I put the baby down and would have to make an effort to find and watch a full movie)
I like it. I think it's original (enough) and clever (enough) and provides me with entertainment. Sometimes, that's all I want from a movie.

I dont say this directly at you, but I feel like theres a few curmudgeons on here that almost any comedy ends up 2.5/5 (I think I told cosjobs Im switching my scale to 5) or worse. Basically, a comedy needs to be the best in a few years to get a decent rating by many of the familiar people in this thread is what it seems like.

Disclaimer: Havent seen Horrible Bosses, it just seems very rare that a comedy gets more positives than negative in here, its like movies arent funny enough for us snobs in here
You are calling me one of those curmudgeons, but I can take it. You asked me a similar thing after I said Bridesmaids wasn't that funny. I listed quite a few movies in the last few years that I thought have been really good, but honestly I haven't seen much in the last year or so that I would highly recommend. I will admit that the way my ratings are set up you will rarely see a really high rating for a comedy or horror movie out of me because it would be quite rare that I would list one in the top 10 movies of the year (which would be an 8/10 on my scale). Been thinking about that, and might put a genre-specific tweak to my ratings like I did for my horror reviews above. I think one of the big problems with the current comedies is the run time, and I partially blame that on the Apatow factor. Bridesmaids suffered from this - no need for a comedy movie to approach the 2 hour mark. (same thing with horror) very rarely do I feel they have the plot to keep me interested that long. I think where HB fell short is that they got away from the interaction with the bosses, which was fairly good and then put the 3 guys out on some silly plot to kill them (really, they couldn't just try to mess with them back? Had to kill them?) Just got bored with the movie at that point. Hooter brings up that Charlie Day was annoying as well and that grated on me too.

Personally I am not satisfied with just getting 3 :lmao: moments for sitting through a movie for 2 hours. There has to be something else there to sustain my interest and want to watch it again to get over a 5/10 for me. I will admit that there have been a few I haven't liked but I tried watching again and dug more, but neither of these really made me even want to try to watch them again. Stuff I have liked lately (not that all are really new), were more because I knew little about them and ending up being surprised - stuff like Fanboys, Baby Mamma, Easy A, Super, etc.. What has been failing for me is the big budget comedies that are hyped by everybody and end up showing you most of the funny scenes in the trailers.

Saw 3:

Was talking to a co-worker and couldn't remember which ones I had seen. I thought only a couple, but wasn't sure so I went back through and started the series again to see. So far, I think this was the best of the series. Seems like a decent blend of the first two. The first one tried to do some back story, but the acting was HORRIBLE and production was about 0. The second had a better budget and acting, but they threw so many people into it you couldn't keep anything straight. This one had a messy beginning, but stabilized after a bit when it was following just the 2 main sets of characters. Also evident they decided to ramp up the gore in this one too. Kinda liked the very end twist too.
Is this the one with Angus Macfadyen and the indian doctor? I thought that was probably the best one besides the first, IIRC.Big fan of Trick R Treat as well. Had some nice humor as well as some of the freakier stuff Ive seen in a horror in awhile

I agree on its rare for me to consider a comedy in my top 10 or so for the year, especially best as opposed to favorite, which is why my ratings I think are more genre to genre than overall comparative, and like you say, how a comedy or horror could go up to the 8/10 echelon of whatever.I dont think I could ever see Charlie in anything and dislike him.

And I had never seen that guy before. Don't know WTF he is. Also not a huge fan of Sudeikis, which is probably a big reason I wasn't entertained after they moved away from the bosses and focused more on those 3.

He's one of the 3 main actors/creators of Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Its one of the best comedies on TV for me, recommend checking it out.

Contagion B-

The first half, following the outbreak was great. I cringed at every touch of a doorknob or cough and it was scary watching the spread of the outbreak.

But once the virus became an epidemic and a race for a cure or vaccine, it lost a lot of momentum.

Some good performances in the show, Jude Law was pretty good as the conspiracy theorist.

And it really does not help that I am getting sick

Big Charlie Day fan from It's Always Sunny. Never liked Sudeikis either. But they were both terric in Going the Distance which is a rom-com that is really good that has flown under the radar.

Watched Bull Durham for first time in a while. Can a movie be more perfect? Every scene. Brilliant. Really underrated performance by Tim Robbins. Gets overlooked because you forget he's acting.

It's hard to touch a classic. But screw it I want more Crash Davis. Want to see him managing his first big league team.

Just watched Footloose for the first time ever. Obvsiously parts of the film dont age well and have high comedy potential, but overall it was an enjoyable flick. Some of those 80's songs are great!

Killer Elite

New action thriller with Jason Statham, Clive Owen, and Robert De Niro. Not bad. Kind of exactly what you'd expect. I guess I'd give it a C+. Good action sequences. But it's largest failing is that most of the people in the movie are pretty amoral. So there isn't much heroism to root for. Still, if you're drunk with your buddies and want to kill a couple hours, there's this movie.

Sunshine

Was looking forward to this quite a bit as so far I'generally a fan of Boyle's films, really liked Trainspotting and 127 hours, and I enjoy good sci-fi films, but this one missed the mark. The main issue I had was the plot; the overall story arc was good enough but the journey to get to the end point was pretty dumb throughout the hour and 45 minute film. There was 8 people on the spacecraft, and from start to finish I was pretty well cheering for the ####### character since he was the only one who wasn't a complete idiot, and I don't think that was Boyle's intention. I know most in here hated the change of pace with 15 odd minutes left, but I thought that was the best mini-plot in the film. Still, the movie the acting and visual awesomeness was enough to make it worth watching.

I loved the intellectual material - hated the antagonist. Remove the antagonist and you have a smart movie.

The Conspirator- Very good movie, great pace throughout. Interesting story that I never knew about. Someone else mentioned in their review of the movie that their wife even liked it and I'll second that. Historic films usually make her cringe and she wasn't very optimistic heading in but enjoyed it too. My only comlaint was that the lead actor (James McAvoy) had a little too much of modern attitude in his speech and mannerisms. He should have learned a little from what was a stellar cast. Oh, and I just can't take the Mac guy seriously. 3/5

Funny, I thought the exact opposite. Particularly about the intellectual material. The only intellectual character seemed to be Mace, all the others let feelings get in the way, which is inexcusable when your mission is to save MANKIND.

Wife and I did a movie marathon this weekend.

Troll Hunter-Enjoyable. Some plot falls...but overall decent flick. Probably not good enough to watch again. 3/5

Sucker Punch-Fun movie. Lots of fighting and shooting. I dug the way the sound track played to the action. Decent lead from dream to reality. I recognize all the flaws, but I absolutely enjoyed it. Mrs TRF...meh. I'd watch it again. 3.5/5

The Rite-New twist on the Exorcist. Freaky. Decent, not great. Won't watch it again. 2.5/5

Just Go W/ It-I went in to this one knowing I'd hate it. Stupid premise. Not so great acting. Many parts were forced. For some crazy reason I liked it. I found that while watching it, Mrs TRF and I would both have the same goofy smiles on our faces. Go figure. I understand it was a crappy movie. It worked for me. The thing I like about Sandler movies is that he always has a sound track I can identify with and always seems to have banter indicating that he's enjoying himself in the movies. 3.5/5 (for me...however, I'd never recommend it in public)

For me, I liked the "mankind could cease to exist story" a lot more than the "ooooo this ugly, mean bad guy might kill everyone like Jason...Friday the 13th style!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I enjoyed Sucker Punch, and I have a theory about the source of heavy criticism for the movie:Viewers expected lots of naked chicks. The movie doesn't have that.

Just a theory

Yeah the "mankind could cease to exist" story was good as I said in my initial post, my problem was the characters were all idiots in their attempts to save mankind. Except for Mace.

Funny, I thought the exact opposite. Particularly about the intellectual material. The only intellectual character seemed to be Mace, all the others let feelings get in the way, which is inexcusable when your mission is to save MANKIND.
For me, I liked the "mankind could cease to exist story" a lot more than the "ooooo this ugly, mean bad guy might kill everyone like Jason...Friday the 13th style!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Agreed. The sun was a far superior antagonist.

Bridesmaids.

Put me on the side that this was vastly overratted. Did I laugh throughout? Yes. Was it a good movie? Yes. Guess I just came away more dissappointed then anything because their was a great movie in there.

Wiig's character was just very unlikable for nearly the entire movie. They just didn't develop her character enough. The last scene with her was completely uninspired.

Melissa McCarthey was amazing though.

Overrated I guess because I liked The Breakup a lot more and that wasn't a raging success. Going the Distance was also a much better rom-com.

Last scene should have been Wiig parking in front of the police car on the side of the road. She get's out with a crowbar and smashes her brake lights. Cop stares their in disbelief. She drives away hoping the cop will pull her over. Nothing is happening. She gets misty. Then what's that...his siren. Boom. Great ending.

The ending of him just showing up at the wedding was just weak writing.
3 out of 4 stars barely. I'd recommend it. Good but could have been a classic.

Meek's Cutoff

Beautifully filmed, yet bleak story of three families following a guide (Meek) along a shortcut from the Northwest passage. The drama is generated by the party against the environment, the families against the guide, and an Indian is thrown in for an extra serving of dramatic conflict.

This is Kelly Reichart's fourth film, all set in Oregon. I really enjoyed Wendy & Lucy, but not so much Old Joy. This film reminds me more of the latter.

If you had a problem with the lack of dialogue and endless scenes of the characters simply walking across the landscape in The Way Back, this film make make you suicidal. It makes Way Back seem chatty.

While an admirable piece of filmmaking/cinematography, it left me wanting more: characterization, conflict and resolve.

2.9/5
Just saw this and enjoyed it a lot. Although it moved really slowly at the beginning, I thought the pace picked up enough til the end that I was never really bored with it. Though I should say, maybe I'm strange in that I never have a problem with a movie moving too slow if I care about the characters or are interested about the story; but this film had both. It was also the most genuine film I've seen in a long time (which I really appreciated), in that there's no moment in the film that took me out of the watching experience and made me self-aware; I was pretty engrossed once the dialogue started. Bruce Greenwood, Michelle Williams, and Will Patton were all great, as was the Indian fellow. I'd give it something like 4 or 5 out of 5.

Just watched Footloose for the first time ever. Obvsiously parts of the film dont age well and have high comedy potential, but overall it was an enjoyable flick. Some of those 80's songs are great!
That movie was a lot of fun.
Chris Penn. :headbang:
hmmm... I remember hating this movie when it came out originally and hating it when I saw it again years later just to make sure if I had missed something. fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice, I won't get fooled again.

I don't get the love for the intellectual material of the movie. A lot of the scientific stuff was obviously inaccurate but that didn't really bother me as that obviously wasn't what Boyle was going for. What bothered me was how un-itellectual all the characters were.
Cilian Murphy, as the supposed brilliant physicist, had the most inane reason for going to Icarus 1, '2 shots are better than one'? How about the opposite '1 shot is better than none', and they all even went over how the likelihood of their being anything valuable on Icarus 1 was slim. Then there was Tre making a huge mistake on such an imperative thing, you'd think someone would double check his results or whatever considering all the #### he was responsible for. Then there was the 2nd in command guy acting like a little child on Icarus 1.
These people are supposed to be the best and brightest the world has to offer in an attempt to save the world, but it felt like they were just a random group of 8 who they picked up from some science course at the local community college.

ah- I hear you.By "intellectual matter" I meant the approach to how the film was put together- the intellectual matter being the film process and not the obvious 3's Company idiotic plot catalysts you pointed out. I appreciate Boyle's method here even if I originally didn't like the movie much as a result of the plot devices you pointed out.

Also, I think I was more agreeing about the antagonist ruining things as much as anything else, and that the movie would have been better without- or with more ambiguity as to whether there really was an antagonist.

This sums it up for me. By "intellectual material" I don't mean to imply that that material was quantum physics. I'm just saying that the thoughtful material worked a lot better than the cliche bad guy material.

Real Steel -I'm still a sucker for an underdog in a boxing ring story. IMAX raised in a smidgen. 2.6 / 5 stars

Moneyball - I am a huge baseball fan and I loved the inside view of team management. THe acting was top shelf. 4.1 / 5 stars

Drive - Best of its type and takes the type up a few notches 4.25 / 5

The Guard - Gleason and Cheadle lend weight to fairly standard fare and raise it substantially. Clever and fun 4.2 / 5

Are you watching all these in theaters or are you streaming or downloading screener DVDs online?

127 Hours Enjoyed this quite a bit. Well done flick and the perfect length for its subject matter. The ending (the very end) felt a bit hackish.

The Men Who Stare at Goats This one's been on the DVR and I finally got around to watch it. Meh. It was far from great but it wasn't awful. I'm not kicking myself for not rushing to see it sooner.

I put off watching 127 for a long time, but when I finally viewed it I was quite impressed. It was quite solid.I found MWSaG very disappointing, but I will give it another shot some time.

Finally Saw City Of God based upon the high praise.

Yes, it was excellent. Totally believable, stylish, had you on the edge of your seat.

It was not overhyped.

To me, this was 1 of those movies where "the whole does not = the sum of its parts", and by a big margin

Sucker Punch-Fun movie. Lots of fighting and shooting. I dug the way the sound track played to the action. Decent lead from dream to reality. I recognize all the flaws, but I absolutely enjoyed it. Mrs TRF...meh. I'd watch it again. 3.5/5
I enjoyed Sucker Punch, and I have a theory about the source of heavy criticism for the movie:Viewers expected lots of naked chicks. The movie doesn't have that.

Just a theory
Mark me down as rather seeing that chick do her stripper dance then the mind-numbingly bad action scenes. I got to the point where I was just fast-forwarding through just to see how it ends.Movie was phyiscally irritating.

i would agree. i remember watching this and wondering what the last good movie that spacey was in. somehow his movie career went sideways.

12 Angry Men - 8/10

Mark this as another pre-'75 movie that I really enjoyed.

I really liked that they had the characters display the intense emotions they did without having it seem like overacting (which I find endemic in older films).

All the performances were terrific. As was the camerawork.

The Ides of March - exceedingly average. disappointing considering the cast. Ryan Gosling just can't carry a movie for me. Needed more Clooney and Hoffman

I read enough tepid reviews of this movie to be pleasantly surprised by it. I liked it

I can see that. I was expecting a visual feast, and that's what I got. I think Snyder's new Superman film is going to kill.

Beyond the Sea, but that was also 7 years ago

The Green Lantern: Not very good. Probably a step below Thor. Not sure how they could have done it much better with the material they had to work with. 1.5/5

Horrible Bosses: Big fan of most of the actors in this movie. Sound good laughs and a decent plot. Definitely re-watchable. Enjoyed it more than the majority of recent comedies. 4/5
