Batman Returns is even worse than I remembered. The original Batman was pretty decent, but that whole franchise was a joke pre-nolan. I remember how big of a deal the first one was in 5th grade when it came out but damn they really bastardized the whole thing compared to begins and tdk.

I was flipping through channels last night and forced myself to watch the end of Batman Returns to remind myself how bad it was, however, it was actually even worse.

As someone who watched both Nicholson's Batman and Batman Returns in their entirety within the past 6 months, I was amazed how bad Batman was and that I thought Returns was relatively much better. I wouldnt call either good, but I think DeVito/Walken > Nicholson here and Id rather watch Returns again if I had to pick one.

Really? At least the first Batman kind of fits in with a mafia/kingpin type story. Returns storyline just was really bad. Devito and Walken were good, but the movie itself wasn't. And Catwoman with 9 lives? Trained Penguins?

Been listening to a podcast that they referred to on /filmcast. They go into detail with their reviews - I think the shortest ones are about 45 mins for one movie. They do a whole series, which is what started me on the Saw movies again, as it's a blast to watch the movies and then listen to the podcast afterwards. Anyway, been laughing my ### off at their review of Nightmare on Elm Street 2. Their take is that Nightmare 2 is basically about repressed homosexuality and Freddy taking over the main kid's body represents the kid coming out of the closet. Makes a lot of sense and is quite funny to think about - might have to watch that crapfest again soon to look at it through that lens.

The Hangover is much better with a theater full of people.Spinal Tap is awesome.

Comedies probably more then any other genre except pron are very time sensitive. Animal House is good but I didn't think it was a riot. I would imagine it was a riot when it came out though. Recently watched Spinal Tap for the first time and thought it was funny and very smart. I think 25 years ago it would have blown my mind though and I can see and appreciate that.

Watched Hanna with next to no expectations and I genuinely enjoyed it. loved the camera-work and direction, and really liked the fairy-tale narrative and characters. Some good action thrown in too, which helped it move along and kind of cover up the cliched story-arc of the title charcter needing to get from point A to point B filling up the movie. The fairy-tale aspect also helped me forgive a ton of plausibility holes. And I would have preferred not ultimately learning who this kid was- felt like it wasn't needed at all and a bit of mystery would have helped maintain the fairy-tale... but ambiguity doesn't seem to play well in the US.

Movie was also pretty funny and Chris Hemsworth has some chops.

I thought they gave a ton of respect to Elba as Heimdall. Stevenson definitely felt wasted, but Volstag is a pretty weak character to begin with. I have read plenty of Thor in my day and always thought The Warriors Three would not translate to the big screen. I was pretty much right. That line and the deadpan delivery of the pet shop scene both cracked me up as much as any line from a recent comedy I can think of. I just don't know enough about the characters and lore to intelligently comment on anything else. I did enjoy this more than X-Men: First Class.

Some good action thrown in too, which helped it move along and kind of cover up the cliched story-arc of the title charcter needing to get from point A to point B filling up the movie. The fairy-tale aspect also helped me forgive a ton of plausibility holes. And I would have preferred not ultimately learning who this kid was- felt like it wasn't needed at all and a bit of mystery would have helped maintain the fairy-tale... but ambiguity doesn't seem to play well in the US.

I want to see this.

Beats, Rhymes, & Life - The Tribe Called Quest Documentary. Great doc on the the greatest hip hop group of all time. Great music is a given, but the back story of the break up of the group is very interesting. Very well done and a must watch for any hip hop fan.

Got good reviews but the structure of this movie really bothered me. First of all, it's 1hr 24mins. Any movie under 1h40min makes me suspicious they didn't have enough good material. The first hour of this one was Jake Gyllenhall trying to figure out why he has to solve a mystery on a train, groundhog day style. You learn what that's all about and then they fill the last 20mins with some sentimental junk to get to a passable running time. Not impressed at all. Somebody had an semi-interesting plot idea (which has kind of been done before) and force-wrote a movie out of it.

Time Out: French movie about a guy who starts a Ponzi scheme after losing his job. Somehow I had misread it to the think the guy was going to become a hit man after losing his job. Turns out, watching a Ponzi scheme develop is not very interesting. 2/5

One of the most boring films I've ever sat through. It went nowhere and took a long time to get there.

Go see it. To me it's a fantastic follow on to Eastwood's man with no name western films set in the present day. The pacing, editing and cinematography are all very interesting and the supporting performances from Brooks, Cranston and Perlman are great.

Have you tried Now Playing yet? Addicted to this one now - I ripped through the Back to the Future and Karate Kid series then moved on to the Saw series. Currently going through some of the other horror movies before moving onto some of the slightly more series ones like the movies based on Phillip **** stories, the Scorsese/Leo combo movies, and they are currently going through the Hannibal Lector movies as well.

Grown to love Better off Dead over the years. Didn't realize until recently that the Asian dude in the car who wants to race is the badass from Karate Kid 2.

First 30 minutes are superb. Rest of movie doesn't measure up. Nice try but a misfire.

I'm probably alone on this, but I hated One Crazy Summer. One of two movies I've ever walked out of (the other was the Batman movie with Arnold)... I remember sitting there cringing every time Bobcat came on screen and finding the rest of it totally unfunny and cliche- almost cynical in trying to mix goofball "comedy" with a teen-romance forumla.

Not a cinematic masterpiece by any stretch. And I don't think it has anything important to say. And the story's kind of stupid with really only one joke repeated over and over.

But it's kinda cool, bordering on fascinating and I dug it.

That said, I personally felt that Rubber was an interesting balance between B-movie homage and a damning statement on the horror industry today. For me, Rubber claims that the horror genre has become lazy, content with churning out absurd villains and two dimensional characters. The audience will eventually become dissatisfied and effectively be ‘killed off’: though the critics will remain to highlight the flaws, in a vain attempt to improve the situation. But the words will go unheeded, with the ridiculous antagonist simply spawning more absurd clones of itself and thus dominating the market with mediocre trash.

I just liked the camera work and seeing a tire learn its powers by first runing over stuff and then exploding some heads.

Red State

Settled in last night for my first horror film of the season, or so I thought. I hadn't seen a trailer or read much, if anything about this film, except that it was Kevin Smith's attempt at horror. What I got was unexpected, and satisfying. What we have here is a rare attempt of a genre buster. Films like From Dusk Till Dawn and Devil's Rejects immediately come to mind. This film starts as a Hostel type horror film and turns into a botched ATF Waco-style raid. It is unpredictable and fun. It isn't overly gorey, but there are of course a couple of fairly extreme scenes. Michael Parks is awesome in it. Smith's direction has come a long ways since the static shots of Clerks. I know the people that have commented on it say it was hack stuff here too, but I have to disagree, easily the best directed film shot-wise Smith has done.

Ok, now the bad, the storyline is very choppy, and the ending is stupid, tacked on, and awful in just about every other way imaginable.

If you are a fan of film and horror I think there is enjoyment to be found here. If you are just a fan of one or the other you may be disappointed in a big way.

Decent addition to the franchise. Better than 2 and 3, enjoyed it about the same as the first.

Was a little disappointed in the ending though...

...thought they were actually going to go against the 'rules' and let her get away with it. The villian always dies/gets defeated in the end and I thought it might have been more interesting to let her get away scot free.
