Children of Heaven

A young boy loses his sister's shoes, the family is poor and can't afford another pair, fearing punishment they keep it to themselves, and needless to say complications result. Reminiscent of The Bicycle Thief, this is a simple plot centered around a simple problem. The acting from the brother and sister is believable. I was entertained.

:) One of my favorite movies. So I have to say that I don't understand the kvetching about what's available on Netflix streaming. Granted, I'm not trying to find the latest blockbusters, but after going "all streaming" I've been beefing up my instant queue and find about 3/4 of what I want is available.

Somehow I've been on a run of really creepy movies.

A Somewhat Gentle Man: I'd generally happily watch anything with Stellan Skarsgard in it, but this contained the creepiest sex scene I've ever seen. And after another later creepy sex scene, and absolutely nothing happening in the movie (other than creepy sex scenes), I gave up. Unwatchable. 1/5

Marwencol: Documentary about a guy who creates dioramas of scenes from his life after a near-fatal beating. I'm sure there's some "strength of the human spirit" lesson here, and it's somewhat interesting, but also very creepy. 3/5

Mother: Raise your hand if you've ever seen a Korean movie that's not creepy. I don't see many hands raised. This is actually a very good movie from Korea, despite undertones of incest, or a mother trying to prove her ######ed son is innocent of murder. Fantastic acting and good style, full of surprises as well. But damn creepy. 3.5/5

Carlos: Huge disappointment to me. I considered whether to go with the five-hour miniseries or the three-hour feature, and finally decided I didn't want to miss anything and went with the miniseries. Bad idea. The story of Carlos the Jackal has to be fascinating, but you'd have no idea based on this movie. Disjointed, uncompelling...the movie suffered badly from an absence of context or conflict and gave no concrete idea of who this guy was or why he was doing what he was doing, or how he really was connected to the Japanese Red Army, for instance. Decent acting but not enough to make this worth the time. 2/5

Waste Land: This Brazilian documentary about "pickers" in the largest landfill in Rio was simply one of the best documentaries--and maybe one of the best movies--I've ever seen. I won't say anything more here other than run to see it. 4,578,231.98/5

got caught up in this when it was on AMC a few months back. watched all 5 hours. kept hoping for it to get better.. as you said, completely disjointed.

Ditto. Absolutely brutal movie. Not the worst movie I've ever seen (that honor has to go to Leonard Part VI), but still just a bad film.

Friday the 13th (1980):

Been awhile since I have visited a lot of the original horror movies they have been pumping out the remakes for, so I ordered up the 1st 4 of these through the library. I was surprised on both ends of the spectrum for this one. For the bad, I forgot just how bad the acting was in this one, but I guess that is expected to a point on the budget we had here.

What I didn't realize is that this movie was attempting to more of a murder mystery and less of a straight up slasher. They made a point of hiding the killer and giving you lingering shots of 'suspects' and other clues - killer driving a Jeep, killer has the same color pants as the crazy guy, shots with a counselor and the owner with axes/machetes, etc. Just thought it was interesting since I think about the series and automatically think straight slasher (which it turns into later). Where the mystery fails is by not ever introducing you to the killer in the movie. Hell, you could have had her working at the diner the first girl goes into at least.

Get the feeling that his movie was made as a stand alone movie, but after they put in the final scare (which is awesome), I guess they felt they had to run with that idea for 85 more movies. Still enjoyed this movie for what it was trying to be even if it fell short of the goal.
Part 2 is pretty solid, too.

Super 8: Pretty solid. It started getting a little over the top towards the end. I was expecting a lot more action/garbage from it since it. The kids were pretty entertaining. 3.5/5
Really liked this. I wouldnt call it a popcorn flick, but you could, and if you do, its the best Ive seen in years. I thought the kids were great and reminded me of The Goonies and Stand By Me, not even sure what the last movie Ive seen I could say that about. I think there was less action than expected to add to the intrigue/mystery of the monster and keep the suspense up, which I had no problem with. Id probably go 4.2/5
I loved this movie. One of the best summer movies I've seen in a long, long time.

Whew. I'd read so many good things about this that I'm glad to hear others felt the same as I did.

Raise your hand if you've ever seen a Korean movie that's not creepy.
I stopped trying after watching The Isle.My review:

If you only see one existentialist art house horror porn film this year, then you must see The Isle. The Isle is a Korean film about a disturbed woman that services small fishing floats. By service, I mean she brings the men coffee, has sex with them occasionally, and stabs them with a screwdriver if she doesn't like them.

The Isle is one part "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and one part "I Spit On Your Grave." Sort of a cerebral feminist slasher flick. Too gross to appeal to mainstream audiences and too slow to appeal to suspense fans, I am not sure who this film was made for.

On another topic, who wants to fish in a lake where there are no bathrooms?
So I have to say that I don't understand the kvetching about what's available on Netflix streaming. Granted, I'm not trying to find the latest blockbusters
Asked and answered. The selection of indy films and documentaries is excellent. But you can almost never find a good new release from a major studio.

Attack the Block

Tremors/Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels mish mash. Awesome hiphop/techno soundtrack. Best creature feature in a long, long time. The "black out" style creature effects were great.

4/5

Another Earth: About a girls struggles with revealing to a man that she killed his wife and kids in a car accident... oh yeah, and another planet has shown up right beside our own (aptly named Earth 2). It takes a while for the other planet to really enter into the plot and you (I was at least) sitting there the whole time trying to figure out what the hell the point of it was. And really, there isn't much of a point to it. It could easily have be taken out and had little effect on the movie (kind of like how this giant planet right next to ours had ZERO effect on things like our tide, weather, sun...) Brit Marling was pretty damn good (and very hot). Dreary and dark movie, enjoyable but flawed. 3.5/5

One big issue I had with it was with the car accident (and the tides/weather/sun thing). How in the hell can things so obvious be missed!? I'll put it in spoiler tags but it really has nothing to do with the movie...

Air-bags? Ever hear of them? When a car gets hammered from straight on, airbags deploy. Also, the kid in the bag seat gets launched through the windshield. Umm... the car he was in, was not moving! How the hell does this happen? Nevermind that later in the movie it shows him wearing a seatbelt.

I've grown tired of the superhero genre and have actually skipped watching a few of them. But after hearing good reviews, I gave X-Men: First Class a shot and it was very good. It's mostly the sequels that I don't like, preferring the storylines that focus on how people came into their superpowers, or in this case formed their group. I'm not that up on the who's who in X-Men but still enjoyed it. 3/5

In the vein of revisiting scary movies from the 80's that you haven't seen since you were a kid, I attempted to show my wife Sleepaway Camp Friday night. We didn't even make it to when people started dying. I told her that the only thing that I remembered from the movie was the ending. Now I know why. The acting was literally unwatchable. I told her, we can try it again some other time, or I can just tell you what happens. She just went for the ending. Her reaction:

 Liked this one a lot. Low budget, but the pace keeps it above the traditional 'B-movie' feel.

In Time : very not good. Would have made a great PKD short story, but becomes a jumbled mess over 110 minutes.Timberlake surprisingly ok in it. Figure this movie is his foray into the "can he carry a movie" club. Can't see this doing big BO, but I'd love to see him given something to do.
saw this last night and actually enjoyed it. went in with low expectations and was entertained for 2 hours. end was a bit of a letdown but there really wasn't a good way to wrap it up, imo
For some reason I couldn't suspend the whole 'time clock on your arm' thing. Especially when people could just grab your arm and take time from you. I just kept thinking that they'd have put in some kind of safeguard so you had to willingly give away your time. When a movie pulls you out of it and makes you think those kinds of things, you can't let other things go like...
When the dude is worth a thousand years, why doesn't he send a car to pick up his mother? Or pick her up in a cab?

What's the best version of The Shining to see for someone who has never seen it? I still have never seen it before ( :bag: i suppose) and figure I should see it sometime soon, but looking at the wiki page there appears to be 3 different versions, the US Cut (144 min), International Cut (119 min), and the Original Cut (146 min). Am I right to assume the original cut is the one to see?
I do not believe that the original cut has ever been released on DVD or VHS. I also have not seen the innternational cut available, so the US cut is your only option. IIRC, the original version has a scene or two after the US version ends, but very few people oddly enough have ever seen the original ending.
Yeah I actually watched the film last night, and after doing that I went on the film's wiki page and on there it made it sound like Kubrick had a change of heart after the first week the movie was released and demanded all theaters physically cut the last 4 odd minutes of the film out. The wiki page also made it sound like the original ending killed a lot of the ambiguity which would have been really bad imo, so I think the US Cut is probably the one to see.
Its been awhile since I saw this but what was ambiguous about the ending? I thought Jack freezes to death, Shelley Duvall and the kid live, and thats that.
The movie has a lot of ambiguity, at least from my point of view.
The 2 biggest ones for me is are there really ghosts in the hotel or have the 3 characters just gone mad? Each character sees the "ghosts" at different times, and in different scenarios. The kid sees them pretty well anywhere, Jack sees them whenever he's facing a mirror, and Mrs. Torrence sees them when she's completely mortified and confused. imo, the throughout the buildup of the film its suggested that there really are no ghosts and they've all gone crazy, but then once a "ghost" unlocks the cellar door letting Jack out, I can't think of any other explanation except for the ghosts being real. But also I don't think it was ever explained that once Jack came out of there he was limping..The other obvious one was the very last scene of the movie shows a picture of Jack surrounded by hundreds of people captioned something like "The Overlook Hotel Ball, 1921", which I don't get at all considering the rest of the film is set in the 60s or 70s and Jack looks roughly the same age in the 1921 picture as he does in the other parts of the film.
Jack hurts his leg/foot when Wendy knocks him down the stairs. When she closes the storage door, he collapses, grabbing his leg.

Dunno.Just distracted me at times. I guess more props to Mike Myers for nailing the accent if his is authentic.

I dig. It didn't bother me, though.

I liked First Class too, but then again I liked Wolverine and that got panned. I never know quite what to think of these X-men flicks.

Wolverine wasn't as bad as it was made out to be, but it wasn't as good as you would think the Wolverine Origin story should be either.Along the lines of my complaints on Transformers 3 regarding continuity, I have a complaint regarding First Class and Wolverine: at the end of Wolverine Prof. X is walking.

Wolverine was terrible - although it was so bad it was entertaining.

Captain America was hard to get through. Just awful. I liked Thor and thought the new X-Men was terrific.

Only thing that kept me going was the incredibly hot female lead in Captain America.

While I was watching it I kept thinking "man, this could be really good" but it never really materialized. Too much time was spent with the USO stuff. I don't know if that is part of the comic book dogma or what, but really what reason was there for it? Why wouldn't you deploy your super soldier? The final fight and crash was very anticlimactic and the crash really didn't even make sense.

i rather liked the fact that it deviated from the established comic book narrative. it was kind of refreshing really. it made sense to have your super soldier to motivate and inspire rather than the very real possibility of him getting killed and demoralizing the war effort. it was campy and fun rather than trying to be dark or gritty.

It would be very difficult to justify the costume and shield without the USO aspect of the film. It is where he realizes that he is a symbol (an idea even) more than a soldier. Without that context all you have is a weirdo in a funny costume.

NYRipper isnt on netflix...which version of Gates of Hell is the one you mean? Im assuming the Trauma version is Argento's and not one from 04 with Colin Firth?

With the wife out of town last weekend, I got to catch up on a lot of guy-type movies that she wouldn't watch:

The A-Team - Enjoyable movie although a bit silly at times. I guess that's to be expected Still, better than The Losers or The Expendables which are similar movies.

Tron: Legacy - See above. Decent extension of the story even if they leave the whole concept as unfleshed out as the original did. I actually thought they should have been even more Matrixy with the fight scenes and whatnot.

I Am Number 4 - Twilight with aliens. Got it. I felt like there was a good movie in here somewhere but all the high school movie standard trappings made it pretty annoying. There were also some pretty giant plot holes that were unforgivable.

On a 5 scale, I'd give The A-Team a 3, Tron a 2.5 and I Am Number 4 a 2.

All 3 could have been better with some better writing and effort.

Added to the queue. Might be tonight's instant watch
Ok. Well, I can recommend far better movies if you're into extreme horror.

I can't find the Fulci Gates of Hell, so Fulci's City of the Living Dead or Zombie will suffice.Yes, the Argento version is correct.

Cannibal Holocaust is on netflix. It is slow and cheesy, but it's the closest I've come to losing my lunch watching a movie. Kind of a Blair Witchy, faux documentary, what happened to the the expedition thingy.

Elephant (SPOILERS below, in case you haven't seen it..)

Really expected to enjoy this going in, but I really disliked it leaving. I appreciated what Gus Van Sant was going for (or at least what I think he was going for), but it came out just dumb and meaningless imo. There was essentially no back story about either of the shooters, which I can see the point of going that route, but what I don't get is why there was no character development of any of the other kids. By the time the shooting happened I didn't really care who got shot, with the exceptions of Michelle and John. A lot of the character behavior and reactions to things throughout seemed stupid as well. One of the kids gets shot and the teacher tells him to "get up"? That Benny kid just strolls along through the hallways when the school is on fire and there's shooters on the loose? The jock and girlfriend hear the first gun shots but for some reason decided to hang around til dozens of kids were shot and killed before they tried to escape? John has the discussion with his dad about what was happening inside the school like 20 feet from the schools doors? It's a monstrous school with thousands of students but the hallways are always empty? A lot of things just didn't make sense, and not in a good way.

I don't remember if I wrote up The American... I can get past minimal dialogue if the actions of the characters are engaging or interesting, but this one dragged and had some plausibility holes that I couldn't get past. Beautifully shot though, and nicely acted by Clooney and I'm in  :stalker: with his co-star.
