Water for Elephants:

Was pleasantly surprised by this film based on the book. For those who read the book - no, there was very little they could do to put the twist in the movie but overall they did well. No surprise, but the stand out was Christoph Waltz and it is worth the movie for him. My main beef while watching is that they didn't do much at all with the other characters in the circus - the focus is all about the love triangle. Long story short, you could do a lot worse lately for a romance/drama movie. 7/10.

Friday the 13th Parts 2-6:

Haven't watched a lot of these in a long time. 2 is weird because they are still trying to play it like a murder mystery as in the first installment, but what the hell is the point in that if we knew it was Jason for this one? 3 Was god-awful, and I think the worst of the series. I realize it was in 3D, but why throw dumb crap like popcorn at the audience when you could use it to have Jason pop out. Part 4 is worth for Corey Feldman shaving his head and ####### with Jason. Part 5 is bad, but I give them mild props for attempting to think of something different. However, when you are at movie 5 in a series, why would you not give us a killer that has been established. Silly to have 1/3 of the movies without Jason in them. 6 is probably the 2nd best of the franchise and I think the real turning point for all the rest of the movies. This is the one where they stop being cute, realize that these movies are about Jason killing random kids in cool ways, and just go with it. Jason gets resurrected by lighting for this killing spree.

I would rank the first 6 movies: 1, 6, 2, 4, 5, 3.

Not sure if my mind can take many more of these. I think I remember the others, and will just skip right to the 00s Friday the 13th remake.

Just watched Bridesmaids. I swear i read that it was supposed to be funny. It wasn't. The big girl had some moments but that was pretty much it. I should have known better as soon as one of the previews was some hair dresser showing girls how to get some beach wave curl hair something. My lady thought it was stupid too so at least i know she is cool.

Yes, terrible. If I want to watch a couple hours of beautifully scenery, I'll watch National Geographic or Planet Earth. The story was absurdly boring and a beautiful naked woman can only add so much.

I saw Dungeons and Dragons. That was terrible. By comparison, The American is Citizen Kane.

I saw Dungeons and Dragons. That was terrible. By comparison, The American is Citizen Kane.

Haven't seen it. Of course there are different levels of terrible. Giant Shark vs Mega Octopus is a terrible movie. But thankfully, it knows its terrible. The American thinks its a top notch movie, when it isn't even close. The director should stick to his music videos.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World:

Kept meaning to get back to this after the last time I popped it in and lasted about 20mins. Now that I knew what I was getting into, I had a little more fun with it but in the end I still didn't like it very much. To me it failed on both main fronts - first off as an 'action' movie it got very repetitive and I felt the ex fights kept getting less and less interesting. As a 'rom/com' it failed because neither character seemed to evolve at all and in the end I was disappointed that he ended up with the girl (would have loved to see him with the drummer again). Give it points for inventiveness and giving me something I hadn't seen before, but about half way through the movie I was bored with it. 5/10

Trust:

Newer movie about Clive Owen's 14yr old girl meeting a guy on the internet, for whatever reason not running for the hills when the guy's age is found out, and ends up at a hotel with him. Rest of the movie is about the fallout after her best friend finds out and alerts the principal/police. Thought it was fairly well done, but IMO they didn't dig deep enough into the psychology of why the girl acted the way she did. Some good performances all around, especially from the daughter and was very surprised when the credits start rolling and I read that David Schwimmer was behind the camera. 6/10

Carrie:

This has grown into one of my favorite horror movies. Psycho moms and bullies are far more realistic and scary to me than a random killer. Sort of the anti-Breakfast Club in that there is somebody in this movie that you can relate to and it gets you into the movie that much more. DePalma's camera work is great in this movie and the score is so damn unsettling. This film continues to creep me out big time. I think the only knock that I have on the movie is the final scene in the house when it is crashing down - looks pretty cheesy. Would have been just as effective if they cut right before that after the showdown with Carrie and her mom. 9/10

Hey Cliff- what are some of your favorite movies? Honestly not trying to bust your chops here- just curious since the visual side of film-making doesn't seem to interest you (am I wrong about that?).

Any specific genre? True Romance, Seven, The Man From Earth, Shawshank, Usual Suspects, City of God... plenty more but those are a few.I love the visual side of film making but Italian countryside, villages and a hot chick just doesn't do it for me. Maybe I'm forgetting something from The American. Basic scenary just isn't very captivating to me. When I think of visually great movies I think of 300, Gladiator, Sucker Punch, LOTR, Braveheart, Sunshine, Hero, etc. And there is a beautiful woman in pretty much every movie now. That just comes down to your preference in woman.

First one is a cult classic, but this is an action extravaganza. They probably could have just went ahead and named it something else. Only thing I was dissatisfied with was the conclusion of the Vin Diesel/Rock hand to hand combat fight. The most unrealistic part of the entire series!

Easily the 2nd best of the series, but it is really nothing like the first one. If you've skipped the rest of the sequels or even the original this is worth checking out if you like action movies.

I think its not only the best of the series that I have seen (I may have missed 3 and/or 4) but its probably the definitive car chase movie I ever watched.The interaction between Diesel and the Rock was classic.

Not my favorite genre, really, but a very very good movie.

the score when Carrie is walking through the house after she gets home from the dance, with candles everywhere, is one of my favorite pieces from a movie ever. so creepy, yet beautiful.

Tower Heist

Financial revenge/heist caper with all-star cast follows a paint by numbers storyline and plot. Predictable results elevated somewhat by the solid cast. Stiller does good work, Tia Leone was very interesting, and Eddie Murphy still has a dose of charisma, but looks like he's been in the joint the last two decades. I liked it okay.

The whole score is disorienting as it goes from soft and dreamy to a score that sounds like it's taken from Psycho. Adds so much to the mood.

The Change-Up:

Yes, it's a Freaky Friday/Like Father Like Son/Vice Versa ripoff. Yes, it's pretty damn funny. Really enjoyed this one and would probably say it's the most consistently funny movie of the last year or so. Liked it quite a bit better than Hall Pass, Bridesmaids, etc. and thought overall it was better than Horrible Bosses. Bateman carried this movie, so if you don't find him funny you should look elsewhere for a comedy. Shocked me that you see Leslie Mann's breasts so much in this one as well. 7/10

Alien Raiders

Low budget "Thing" type alien movie set entirely in Hasting's Supermarket. Better acting, dialogue and script than any scifi I've seen out of Hollywood in a while. Highly recommended if you're a fan of the genre. Its showing on TMC thru Sunday night. I watched it because it had 100% Rotten Tomatoe rating. I concur.

I like the style that Mann brought to the movie, but still think he excels more at the gritty cop stuff and less with building suspense. Also surprised how much I liked Peterson in this one. Red Dragon had better actors and a better ending. Not sure I understand where all the love for this one is coming from. I think it was interesting to see the original take on this book (if I remember right, it's closer to the book than Red Dragon was), but still think I'd prefer watching the later incarnation of the series.

I'm a fan of Manhunter over Red Dragon I think because it doesn't rely on the extremity of the violence that the latter incarnations of the series do (excluding SotL of course). But I think the music really kills it's replay value in 2011. Reminds me of Scarface in that regard.

The plot (what there is of it) gets a 5, but the CGI battles get an 11. Talk about eye candy! The last hour is awesome and definitely makes it worth watching.

Add this to The A-Team, The Expendables and The Losers group of action/renegade kick ### group/caper films that all came out at the same time. Enjoyable at times. A bit long at times. Another movie that's a near miss. In this recent genre, I'd put this one behind The A-Team and ahead of The Losers with The Expendables brining up the rear.

I don't remember that much violence in Red Dragon. Plan to revisit these over the next couple weeks though.

Thinking about it more today I think the main faults the movie has are: 1. Lector isn't very menacing in this one. Much didn't come out of him giving the killer Graham's address either. 2. The tooth fairy was interesting, but it felt like they didn't bother to introduce him until way too late in the movie. Overall, I just think Mann made a poor decision to not have much focus on Hannibal in this one. Might as well not have even been in this one. I would give the movie an average rating - 5/10.

30 Minute or Less: Really didn't think I'd like this one. Not a fan of Eissenberg or McBride but Ansari killed it. Lots of laughs. One of the better comedies I've seen recently. 3.5/5

Lucky: A serial killer wins the lottery and begins a dysfunctional relationship with the girl of his dreams. It got some pretty poor but I'm not really sure why. Tom Hanks' boy is pretty solid (doubt he'll reach his fathers level). The chick in it (Ari Graynor) is unbelievably annoying for the first half hour of it but as the movie progresses it wears off. Pretty solid dark comedy. 3.5/5

One ridiculous plot hole: Hanks' gets his winning lottery ticket by killing a girl and taking it from her. 3 months later the detective goes to the convenience store and gets the security footage from the day the ticket was sold... 3 months ago! The guy gives him a VHS tape. At best, a VHS can hold about 8 hours. So 24/8 = 3 x 90 = 180. Would any convenience store have a rotation of 180 tapes (assuming this was the last tape in the rotation)? And its not like they saved this tape because the girl went missing that night. Not sure why little things like this bother me so much.

Manhunter:

Really wish I would have seen this one when it came out. Now it is too hard to separate the others from this one and get the image of Hopkins' Lector out of my mind. I like the style that Mann brought to the movie, but still think he excels more at the gritty cop stuff and less with building suspense. Also surprised how much I liked Peterson in this one. Red Dragon had better actors and a better ending. Not sure I understand where all the love for this one is coming from. I think it was interesting to see the original take on this book (if I remember right, it's closer to the book than Red Dragon was), but still think I'd prefer watching the later incarnation of the series.

I'm a fan of Manhunter over Red Dragon I think because it doesn't rely on the extremity of the violence that the latter incarnations of the series do (excluding SotL of course). But I think the music really kills it's replay value in 2011. Reminds me of Scarface in that regard.

I'm a big fan of Manhunter- used to have it as my go-to recommendation for people wanting to rent a movie as most people hadn't seen it and most enjoyed it. That said- it's pretty dated (Peterson's acting, writing in general, soundtrack, and Mann's very specific 80s art-direction) and suffered in straight comparison when Silence of Lambs came out and raised the overall level of pretty much everything. fwiw- I still enjoy the Lector in the original as a more subdued role/character and I still love the dated soundtrack- big fan of Shriekback, and can't listen to InnaGaddadaVida without thinking of this movie. Also- I can't watch the new version without preferring the old... more out of a "why did they have to go and remake something that was already good" reasoning.

I agree with your wife, she isn't hot. Her boobs are nice, but that's about the only compliment I have for her.

watched "tron: legacy" last night on a lark. a big mess, i thought, and a miss too. felt like it was aiming for "blade runner" meets "matrix" but wasn't willing to do any of the hard work required in getting there. nothing felt earned somehow. the cgi version of bridges was damned creepy while bridges himself felt like a caricature of "the dude". michael sheen should be taken out back and shot. olivia wilde, however, is a *hot* POA and seemed to know how to play her role in this very humdrum flick.
