What the hell were you expecting out of Fast Five, Chaka? I don't usually like brainless action movies, but I had a ton of fun with the first and fifth of this series. And no, it is not any more unbelievable than the A-Team was.

This is not an issue of expectations and I am not really looking for believability. There are plenty of films in a similar vein that I completely enjoy. Fast Five just felt lazy, and kind of insulting, from the opening scene to the very end.I am very good at keeping appropriate expectations and suspending disbelief for movies, but this movie didn't even try. It was the action movie equivalent of an Austin Powers film, no story just a bunch of skits loosely stitched together for the sake of box office receipts. There were some good moments, I liked some of the interactions between the secondary characters and some of the 'stunts' were entertaining (I enjoyed the car going over the cliff and it didn't bother me that the landing would have easily been fatal to any human who attempted it). But for the most part even the 'stunts' and fight coordination were lazily thrown together (that whole train heist was a joke, right?). And forget continuity of any kind, Ninja Assassin had better continuity than this 'film'. The best thing going for it were the production values, clearly the film had a big budget. Despite that this film was a huge mess. I will give it credit for crossing the line from 'awful' to 'so awful it's kind of entertaining' but it took almost 90 minutes to get to that point.

The first AP film was pretty good mostly because of the novelty of the character. AP II was one of the biggest messes of a film I have ever seen. The third one was slightly better but still pretty much terrible.

Watched Hanna with next to no expectations and I genuinely enjoyed it. loved the camera-work and direction, and really liked the fairy-tale narrative and characters. Some good action thrown in too, which helped it move along and kind of cover up the cliched story-arc of the title charcter needing to get from point A to point B filling up the movie. The fairy-tale aspect also helped me forgive a ton of plausibility holes. And I would have preferred not ultimately learning who this kid was- felt like it wasn't needed at all and a bit of mystery would have helped maintain the fairy-tale... but ambiguity doesn't seem to play well in the US.

I want to see this.

First 30 minutes are superb. Rest of movie doesn't measure up. Nice try but a misfire.

Between the gaping plot holes and Cate Blanchett's crapy "Southern American" accent this was not a good movie, no matter how much I wanted it to be.

why is it that actors go for either the southern accent or new york accent? they rarely ever try the midwestern nasal, for example. i think she could nail a minnesota accent and make it much more entertaining for the audience.

It's because those accents are very distinctive, highly recognizable and easy to emulate. Hugh Laurie deserves recognition for his Midwestern American accent.

Crazy, Stupid Love:

Steve Carell is told by his wife that she wants a divorce. Ryan Gosling is a womanizer who is there to pick his mopey ### up and show him how to be a man again. Shenanagins ensue as lives and characters become blended together. Despite this synopsis, the wife and I enjoyed this one a bit and both of us laughed several times. You could do a lot worse in the rom/com department, and I would say this is one of the better ones that I have watched lately. The only thing that I would take out would be Steve's son in the movie - kid was annoying, creepy, and in the movie way too much. 6/10

A Nightmare On Elm Street ('09?):

Rewatched this one since I saw the original recently. Remember not really liking this one, but couldn't remember why. Have more specifics now. Mainly they didn't know what they wanted to do with Freddy. IMO we either needy scary silent Freddy or over the top joking Freddy. What we get here is creepy child molesting Freddy that can't deliver any lines. They went over the edge by having him a molester and showing those reveal scenes. Besides that, there is 0 originality to this one as they just ripped off scenes of the other one. Was probably one of my least favorite of these reboots/remakes until I watched... 4/5

Friday the 13th (00s):

WTF was this? 0 surprise that this was by the same Producers and director of the TCM remake. Despite being a completely different character and franchise, this felt like damn near the same movie as the new TCM. For some reason we decide to turn Jason from a zombie(?) who comes back to kill off camp counselors and avenge his mom's death to an inbred looking kid who grows up to be a cannibalistic (implied?) master blacksmith who has perfected booby traps and labrynthian underground mazes. He is also taking hostages for another stupid subplot. In all of them, this felt like the biggest money grab. People who didn't care about the franchise mixed TCM and Hills Have Eyes in a blender and put Friday the 13th on it. Stay away 3/10

I know you are trying to dog it, but this makes it sound kind of awesome. I do remember it being nothing like the previous Jason movies where he is a plodding, methodological, killing machine. From what I remember this dude was hauling ### around blasting bow and arrows. Cool in its own way, but I agree, just name it something else.

I think I would have given it more of a pass if: a) it wasn't titled Friday the 13th or b) it wasn't so much like the the TCM and Hills movies that came before it. That #### is lazy, even for something with Mr. Bay's name attached to it.

Saw this a few months ago..It seemed to really get trashed here and everywhere else, but it was better than expected and Id say better than most box office horrors these days. I actually like how they changed the backstory and made him a child molester, I thought the reveal progression was done well. I turned into a Rooney Mara fan here. I like what Ive seen from Jackie Earle Haley recently, but I thought he couldve done more (although he really didnt get much opportunity too). My biggest complaint with him actually was his makeup, thought it was pretty bad but maybe that was moreso because it reminded me of Gary Oldman's character (Mason Verger) in Hannibal...Id probably give it like a 2.75/5

The Terminator:

Been a long time, so I thought I'd pop this in again. I know I have been watching too many horror movies lately, but was surprised at how much a couple scenes reminded me of a slasher movie (mainly Sarah's roommate and boyfriend getting taken out). The outdated f/x of the terminator at the end aside, this is still one hell of a movie. Impressive how thought out the plot is, and despite being a time travel movie, there really isn't any holes. Have to watch the second one soon, but one thing that I forgot is that in this movie it is dropped that they were a) winning the war vs. the terminators and b) they destroyed the time machine after sending Reese back. So did they not destroy it? How did they send Ahnold back in T2? Long story short, this movie has everything - suspense, action, love interest, sci-fi, etc. Very tough to pull that off as well as it did. 9/10

I guess the problem I had was that for a horror movie (I guess any movie) to be good you have to either be cheering for the killer or for the victims. Up to this point Freddy was the main focus. He was bad, but his one liners and fun kills had us going in the other movies. Making him a creepy child molester makes it impossible to be on his side. However, I didn't really like any of the kids either. They were basically stock horror movie kids that we really didn't get to know well enough to care about them either. In the end I just became bored with it. And yes, the makeup seemed bad too. I think the only think I liked that they tried to introduce was the idea of micro naps as you become sleep deprived. Makes it possible to jump into dreams while doing everyday things which added a little bit more tension to it. I sure it was assumed, but my above rating was supposed to be 4/10.

This is a great movie - especially when you consider that it pulled off an impressive and ambitious plot on a low budget.

Had a few laughs. More silly then funny. They criminally underused Colin Farrell in this. The Foxx scenes were not horrible but unnecessary and that time could have gone to Farrell.

Fast Five.

Found it a bit frustrating. Lot of build up to scenes then no payoff. Like when they won the blue car, how do you not show the race? The whole practicing of avoiding the cameras was a whole waste.

The whole big car chase scene was more clunky then cool. Suspension of disbelief is one thing but in this Diesel and Walker might as well sprouted wings and flew away with the safe.

Another thing was they didn't show enough Brazilian ### unlike Tokyo Drift which focused a lot more on the "scenery."

2/4 stars.

Just like Andy, there are a ton of older movies I haven't seen and as I look through lists there are a lot of foreign movies and directors that have interested me that I have not gotten to yet.

I am rambling b/c I didn't know if anybody else was interested in playing along. I am going to go back to doing it by director. I made a list 20 or so with 3-4 movies of theirs each that I haven't seen or it's been so long. Everybody from Spielberg to John Ford to Kubrick to Miyazaki. Don't want to make it into a full blown movie club (unless there is enough interest), but I thought if people wanted I could start a thread for each director as I go. Could talk about them, the movies, your loves and hates, etc, etc.

Anyway, first up on my randomized list is a fitting one. I have been interested in seeing Tree of Life, but after looking at things I realized that I still have not seen a single movie (just parts of Thin Red Line) of Terrence Malick's. The plan is to at least get through Badlands and Days of Heaven by the end of next week and go from there.

Is there interest in a thread for his movies, or should I just post thoughts in here??

Not sure I could handle a marathon of Malick. I put Tree of Life in a couple nights ago, but it exhausted me in a hurry. Was really enjoying it though, I love how Malick lets a story unfold, rather than just telling it if that makes any sense.

If you like quirky movies you should check this one out. Also has Olivia Crocicchia (Katy from Rescue Me) but the less I say about that the better hi: Homer).
