just read the description on netflix:added:
It was one of those movies I thought I would like and tried to watch, but it never engaged me and I ended up doing other stuff and not paying attention. Not sure whether the movie was bad or the competing distractions were extraordinarily interesting that night.

Cashback: English comedy about a guy that breaks up with his girlfriend, gets insomnia and decides to spend his nights working at a grocery store. I really enjoyed it. Lots of narrating and flashbacks that I normally dislike but the flashback were hilarious and the narrating was very good. 3.5/5

The Descendants - Howbout we just give Clooney the Best Actor Oscar he so desperately desires so he'll stop making end-of-the-year inner dissonance movies where he's charming in service to the life process. And they should change the "y" to an "i" in the director's name anymore. My dad - family occasions being the only thing that gets me in movie theaters anymore - nailed it: "Why did i just pay ten bucks to go to a wake for a stranger?!".
This is the best movie of the year? I don't get it. Slow, tense, depressing. Clooney's character was good, the rest were pretty standard, and I did not feel the side story of the family money and land was all that realistic. Agree with pissah on most points above. Then again, have I seen a better movie this year? I don't even know.
This kind of conversation has followed just about every Alexander Payne film.
Guess that makes him as predictable as he is overrated
I don't think predictable applies, but if it does it's more likely that it makes the public predictable than him. Loved Election. Liked About Schmidt. Loved Sideways. Haven't seen the Descendents yet, but he has a unique voice as a writer and director and the only thing predictable is that he doesn't feel the need to resolve things like a Disney film.

Good news. I had not realized that season two had been released.
The third (and last) episode of season two just aired in the UK. Haven't watched them yet but I'll get around to it soon.
So their "seasons" are only 3 episodes? That's stupid. I thought "Season 1" was only 3 episodes because it was a midseason replacement, or something. Didn't realize it was supposed to be that way.

I think the sly insults from his fanbase are pretty predictable. You like Louie too, right? I've liked a couple of his movies too, but this one was total blah.. odd that it's in the convo for best of the year but I admit, I haven't seen anything I'd call great this year

I am a huge fan of Payne. All of his films expose weaknesses or foibles of the human condition that I never experience as intensely with other directors. I find the portrayals very touching and moving and I can see why the very best actors (Broderick, Nicholson, Giamatti, Clooney) participate in his projects: because he provides them that rare opportunity to contribute a performance that goes a step beyond.

The acting by the leads is always excellent, that's for sure. His films are fine, I've seen them all (I think - wikipedia is on strike).. I just feel like if you want to call a film great there ought to be more story than he sometimes provides.

He's only done four as writer/director: Election, Schmidt, Sideways, & Descendants.i think that dissociative emptiness/confusion many of his characters convey reflects the plight of modern man. Its not pretty and its not traditional and it certainly does not come with a payoff, but for me it comes to the heart of the emotion and portrays it perfectly.

Ides of March:

A lot of heavy hitters in this movie, but I walked away a bit underwhelmed. I think I was into it right up the point:

When they introduced the sex scandal angle. I guess I am just tired of it, and assume 1/2 these guys are laying pipe across the country on their campaign trails. I was perfectly fine with it being about Gosling's character waffling about which side to be on, and the behind the scenes politics about giving promises for endorsements, etc.. I thought that brought enough interest and tension without bringing in that he diddled an intern too.
Also think Clooney's direction was a little off as well. I remember there being some weird lingering shots of seemingly nothing that were a little distracting. Still recommend taking a peek at it because of all the great actors, but would maybe temper the expectations a little bit. 6/10
:goodposting:
I really dug the movie and it's easily in my top 20 of 2011.
You are starting to sneak onto my list along with Andy and Cliff of opposite opinion reviewers. ;)

What about the movie put it in the tops of the year for you?

I loved his transformation for idealist to a ruthless political guy. I could nitpick here or there was I thought it was extremely well-done. Most of the credit has to go to Gosling since he knocked it out of the park with his performance.

It sucks, but they don't have the budgets we do and episodes are 90 minutes.

I've only seen Sideways and Election. Sideways is one of the most overrated films I've ever seen, but I loved Election.

First episode was spectacular. Didn't care for the second as much, but it was still good. Still have to find time to watch #3.

We watched "The Devil's Double"...the story of the guy who was forced to be Uday Hussein's body double. With Wikipedia down, I can't say how many liberties they took, but the wife and I enjoyed it.

That dude was a legit psychopath and it seems as though his father knew it. Sick mofo.

Had no idea he directed Election. For me, It'd be loved Election, loved About Schmidt, really liked Sideways.

The Family and I caught the movie OCEANS on the movie channels over the weekend. Pretty simple movie with not much to it, but we all loved it. The visuals were amazing and the kids actually all settled down to watch it. They were running around like wild animals before I turned it on. I think it was a solid 5/5. Most family movies are either too boring for the kids or too boring for the adults. This was great for everyone.

Paper Man:

Odd little movie with Jeff Daniels as a down and out writer who still has an invisible friend. I think it had potential, but it fell a little bit short. Something about the relationships just seemed flat. Gets a bonus point for being something different. 6/10

Paranormal Activity 2:

Usually a sucker for these "lost footage" movies as I have stated before. This one suffered from sequelitis and I thought there was a little too much possession going on and one too many people being dragged around the house. There was one scene I will admit got a jump out of me though. I would probably rank the first one slightly higher than this one. 5/10

Black Swan

What a disappointing movie. To begin, I'm an Arronofsky fan. Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler are two of my favorite movies. The Arronofsky quality I admire most is his unconventional style. He doesn't seem interested in cliches. But with Black Swan, we have a standard psychological thriller. Some of the camera moves are so cliche, I can't tell if Arronofsky is giving us a tongue in cheek homage to Wes Craven. Watching the movie, it almost seems like Arronofsky assumes we've never seen a movie like this before.

I liked the actors very much. Cassell, Portman, and Hershey are all outstanding. I'm not much of a Portman fan. She's eager, bright, and nice to look at. However, Portman lacks range and she lacks charisma. Still, this role is perfect for her, and she delivers.

If Arronofsky hadn't dorected Black Swan, I might have gone easier on it. But I expect more from him.

You saw Contraband on opening day and waited over a year to watch Black Swan?

I thought The Fountain was kind of weird and silly. And I don't think Hugh Jackman's a good actor. All that said, the movie seemed original and thoughtful, so I can see why you'd like it. Honestly, it's probably a movie I should revisit some day to give it another shot.

I know right? Well, my main moviegoing friend has really bad taste in movies. He's bright, but rarely wants to see art films. It's sad, too. Because about 12 years ago, my city opened up a real art house cinema. While I'd love to see some of these movies on the big screen, many of my friends would rather see an action flick.Plus, the wife isn't interested in seeing films in the theater. So most really good movies we watch together on DVD or blu ray.

I can't argue, because I looked over the list of the best movies of 2011, and I think it was a pretty weak year.

JD- fwiw, I'm right there with you on Black Swan. IIRC, my criticisms of it were about it being cliched too- but more narratively than cinematically. The old art/fiction vs reality/truth and sanity vs insanity themes were tired to begin with (for me) and the movie did nothing interesting or original enough with them to interest me. Oh right- just remembered that Portman's little flapping wing dance over and over and over again bugged the #### out of me- as did the sound of her breathing being so highlighted throughout the dance scenes.

Agree with this, although I dont want to give it another shot anytime soon. It wasnt kind of weird and silly it was.I dont think Wolverin is a good actor either, which kind if surprises me how much I like The Prestige.

Another movie Ive seen in the last couple months but didnt review. Mostly agree with what you said and would also give it a 3-3.25/5. I didnt think most of the relationships were flat, but that this was one of those indie dramadies where the emotion is more subtle. I thought the Daniels-Emma Stone relationship was very interesting actually, and they played off of each other well. I thought his wife (Kudrow) was a weird relationship that didnt work. Yes, they were separated, but it felt like it wouldve made more sense if they were just divorced and then Stone befriends him (I guess this is where Reynold's fictional friend would be more necessary though, so maybe Im wrong). This movie made me realize how much I enjoy seeing Jeff Daniels. He's a really good character actor, and I think he does understated, quirky characters so good, he has a little more range and is more talented than most would give him credit for. Im surprised he doesnt do more comedies as well.

Agree, which is what kept me in the movie. Most of the other stuff didn't work as well for me - Kudrow/Daniels, Daniels/Reynolds, Stone/creepy ### Culkin kid. Still worth a watch though.

Jackman strikes me as a nice guy. But he's kind of like the male Natalie Portman: good-looking and earnest, but not very compelling.

Midnight in Paris:

Probably a great movie who are in love with the idea of Paris and/or the era of the 20s. I am not in either camp, and this movie bored me. Owen Wilson was a problem for me, and despite saying the words, didn't seem to show emotion about being in the time he fantasizes about. Don't think he can carry a movie. I think I would have gone along with it if he had "met" a couple of historical figures in the past, but the string of artists and novelists that he meets at night got a bit tiresome. Felt like name dropping without a hint of trying to develop anything out of it. Also, the orange tint was really starting to bug me - I was starting to wonder if my damn TV was broken. 4/10

I will admit that this is the first Woody Allen movie that I have seen, but I just don't see where all the praise and awards are coming from for this movie.

Sorry about that, I was putting together a list of my favorite DVD releases of 2011 recently and got mixed up.

Let's face it: Owen Wilson is a terrible actor. I liked him in Bottle Rocket. But the guy's a one-note Johnny - and that one note is pretty dull.

Huh. Still one of my favorite movies of last year.
I can't argue, because I looked over the list of the best movies of 2011, and I think it was a pretty weak year.
I still havent seen this either, but wasnt Black Swan from 2010?Also, Im no spelling stickler, but since you typed his name every other sentence, its Aronofsky ;)
You're right. KarmaPolice said it was last year, but it was 2010.
Sorry about that, I was putting together a list of my favorite DVD releases of 2011 recently and got mixed up.
You *******! :)

I will admit that this is the first Woody Allen movie that I have seen , but I just don't see where all the praise and awards are coming from for this movie.
:shock:Loved Owen in Tenenbaums.

Black Swan wasn't the best of 2010 but it was better than anything I've seen yet this year

Screener of The Artist just leaked, we'll see what happens there. Need somebody to hardcode some English for the text parts first.

Tonight, going to finally get around to Twinkle Twinkle Taylor Dayne or whatever that's called

I'd count all these Allen movies as must-see:Hannah and Her Sisters

Annie Hall

Manhatten

Bananas

Sleeper

Take the Money and Run

Other Allen movies definitely worth seeing:

A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy

Deconstructing Harry

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Cassandra's Dream

Allen defintiely isnt my thing, but thought Sweet and Lowdown was excellent. Sean Penn as a early 1900's jazz guitarist was :moneybag: I thought Cassandra's Dream was pretty good, didnt even feel like an Allen movie which was probably why I liked it.

One that you didnt list that I liked was Small Time Crooks
