Watching Miami Vice.

So far it's awesome. Way better than Drive... well for me at least.

I'm starting to consider attempting to pull off Sony's haircut in this movie.
I have no idea why you would compare Miami Vice to Drive.
Cars, crime, revenge, a forbidden relationship. You see the two movies were virtually the same... it's just the 80s soundtrack in Miami Vice actually made sense.
Didn't like the Miami Vice movie at all, and I'd call myself a Michael Mann fan.
I'm a huge Michael Mann fan and I thought it was terrible. Even if it didn't pale in comparison to the TV show (which I believe it did) I still thought it would've been a boring movie. Looked great as all Mann films do but poor casting, weak story (especially if you've seen the TV show and saw the far superior Season 1 episode) and just a complete waste of time.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Mann's Collateral is a better movie all around.
Why? Collateral was really ####ing good, my 3rd favorite Mann film after Heat and Last of the Mohicans.

Liam Neeson is the best actor working today, making the most consistently watchable movies, and it's not even close.
He's real good, but not close to best. I am surprised he is still being cast as a bad ### so often (Im guessing The Grey, Unknown, Taken, A-Team, Clash of the Titans, Batman Begins). He definitely is believable though despite being close to getting his AARP card.A movie with him and Banderas from a few years ago, The Other Man, I watched a few months ago and it was a real stinker though.
Neeson is a big, physically imposing dude. He'll be able to pull off the bad ### roles for awhile yet.
Is he really that big or physically imposing??? Not sure here. He is physically imposing for a 60 year old, but its not like Im picking him to win a fight over someone like Mark Wahlberg who is a foot shorter than him but 20 years younger.

Neeson is like 6-4, 6-5. Are we talking fisticuffs or melee weapons here?

He is absolutely big and he doesn't need to be ripped to be physically imposing. Besides, we're talking Hollywood, not real life it doesn't matter how old he is, it's how old he can play. So yeah Wahlberg could plausibly take him in a film where Wahlberg is the hero but Neeson could plausibly take Wahlberg in a film where Neeson is the hero.

ETA I'm like a wine advocate when it comes to movies. I have a thing for aged cheese.
And it seems that you also like really bad wineMiami Vice better than Drive :lmao:

Neeson wields swords in about half his movies. Which end of the spectrum are leaning toward? More Briar Gates, or more Rob Roy?

Rob Roy is awesome. Tim Roth is one of the all time best bad guys.

Mother:

Great movie with a great performance from the lead actress. A Korean film about a mother taking it upon herself to investigate a murder that her son has been arrested for. The police are no help because it is an open and shut case for them. Won't go much into detail, except to say that this one is a recommend watch. The one weak part of the movie for me was the son, and was finding him really distracting throughout the movie. 8/10.

The Tunnel:

This one is less found footage and more fake documentary. A camera crew is sent down to investigate why Sydney's project of recycling an underground lake are abandoned and why there are hushed rumors about the homeless living down there disappearing. There was some good stuff here, but they make a big mistake of going back and forth between the footage as they were exploring, and the people talking about their experiences after the fact. Really kills the tension when they cut to somebody talking about the experience instead of just having the audience live it themselves. OK entry in the genre. 5/10

Really don't like Mohicans, so I would replace that with The Insider. Wasn't a huge fan of the ending, but overall I thought Collateral was great.

Really enjoyed this film. I didn't find the son distracting, he was mentally handicapped it seemed natural for the character to me.I am surprised it did not get a best foreign film nomination but I only saw A Prophet and The Secret in Their Eyes which were both excellent so perhaps the other three nominees were also on par with Mother, in which case I should queue them up immediately.

4th or 5th, with Ali being the other.Watched Ali again a year or so ago, and thought it was much better than I remembered. I think most of that has to do with it starring Will Smith and, to a lesser degree, Jamie Foxx, so I had a hard time taking it seriously at the time. In retrospect, both actors proved themselves as talents when given a dramatic roles since that movie (Ali may have even been both guys jumping points for those serious roles), and knowing that, I think I saw this differently. Both gave very strong performances, and thought it was very well done.

I think Rob Roy would be great even if Roth wasnt involved. With him as the villain?? Fugggeeiitabootiiit, he elevates it to that upper tier. I think this was one of the first R-rated movies my dad let me watch, I was likely 12 or 13 at the time. The scene where Roth rapes Jessica Lange was a  moment and I still remember thinking "wow, that guy is ruthless and doesnt give a funk"I dont think that role sealed me on Tim Roth being a great actor, but it certainly made me remember him and Im not sure Ive seen a performance where he disappointed me. Big fan of his 1997 run - Gridlock'd, Hoodlum, and Deceiver. In Gridlock'd, he pulls off a great role as 2Pac's erratic but likeable addict buddy. In Hoodlum, he does a great Dutch Schultz. In Deceiver, well, he does a great deceiver. Tim Roth is the man.

Please elaborate on not liking Mohicans. Its almost a prefect film to me. A war that is rarely discussed let alone in a movie, DDL and Wes Studi, unreal scenery with a moving soundtrack, great direction. I dunno. As for The Insider, I do need to revisit that. Remember nothing about it except that Pacino and Crowe are in it. No way it bumps itself to Heat or Last of the Mohicans level, but it could still go in that top 5.

He had an underrated line in "Reservoir Dogs".Describing Lawrence Tierney's character: He looks just like the Thing.

Ali was good, but I can't help but compare it to When We Were Kings. Ali is the coolest dude that ever lived, so Smith had an impossible task.

Not sure what it is. It has been a few years since I've seen the movie, just remember it looking really good but not doing a thing for me. Probably needs a rewatch in my older age, but I just remember a feeling of thinking that it was just a little too much with the drama or something. I wish I had a better reason for you.

Four Lions

Comedy writer Christopher Morris makes his feature directorial debut with this outrageous comedy about a group of young Islamic Brits who fancy themselves bloodthirsty jihadis of the first order. The film showcases Morris's satirical talents at their vicious best in a scathingly hilarious indictment of true believers and the social systems that create them. Viewers took note and bestowed it the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the L.A. Film Festival

I don't really care for Last of Mohicans either. Must be a Wisconsin thing. ;) . It's a well made movie, it just didn't do anything for me. Top 3 Mann movies for me:

1. Heat

2. Thief

3. Manhunter

If you are a Mann fan and haven't seen Thief, I would recommend doing so.

Really don't like Mohicans, so I would replace that with The Insider. Wasn't a huge fan of the ending, but overall I thought Collateral was great.
Please elaborate on not liking Mohicans. Its almost a prefect film to me. A war that is rarely discussed let alone in a movie, DDL and Wes Studi, unreal scenery with a moving soundtrack, great direction. I dunno.
Not sure what it is. It has been a few years since I've seen the movie, just remember it looking really good but not doing a thing for me. Probably needs a rewatch in my older age, but I just remember a feeling of thinking that it was just a little too much with the drama or something. I wish I had a better reason for you.
Ask Andy which version you should watch if you revisit Mohicans. I am pretty sure he has broken down the differences between the theatrical and directors cut releases and makes a solid argument for one version over the other.

It might qualify as more of a guilty pleasure but I love The Keep.

There's the theatrical (which you can only find on VHS or laserdisc), the DVD, and the Blu Ray versions. Yes, THREE versions now.I think the Blu Ray version is the one to watch nowadays. It's not perfect (the final confrontation between Chingach#### and Magua is still a bit watered down), but it at least restores the Hawkeye character to a badass. The DVD version made him kind of wimpy. Here are the differences.
The DVD "Director's Expanded version" contains several new shots/scenes:A new shot of Chingach#### running in the deer chase.A new shot of Hawkeye walking towards Cameron's Cabin.A new shot of Magua shooting a British soldier point blank with musket. Some new shots of the Siege on Fort William Henry.A new sequence, which was shown on the CBS version in 1996, shows the previously talked about but never shown, Major Heyward's diversion. It shows the British Army in perfect formation shooting French soldiers and Huron Indians.A longer version of the Britsh surrender is shown. Colonel Monroe and General Montcalm discuss political matters.Newer shots of the British Army leaving the Fort are shown.A new but very brief shot of the French cheering their victory while entering the Fort. Some new shots of the Huron approaching the British through the trees. Some violent shots of soldiers being hacked to death by tomahawks are shown. Some new footage of the group rowing from the Huron are shown. After Hawkeye and the others have fled, there are two new but brief shots of the Huron approaching Cora and Alice. The whole "I will find you" sequence has been changed. The original had footage of Cora, Alice and Major Heyward being taken up a mountain. This sequence was accompanied by the song, "I will find you" by the Irish group, Clannad. In this version, the song is gone and the sequence is about thirty seconds longer. It has different shots of Hawkeye, his brother and Chingach#### running up the mountain and following the Huron War party. Their are also beautiful shots of the group being led into the sunset.A brief shot of Hawkeye spying on the Huron village.A quick shot of Major Heyward burning alive has been added but his screaming has been deleted in the rest of the shots.New shots of Uncas fighting the Huron and Magua have been added. When Magua slits Uncas' throat, a new sound was digitally added. When Chingach#### rolls under Magua, a new sound of the tomahawk swinging is heard. When Chingach#### kills Magua, the pike from the battle axe is no longer shown impaling Magua. The scene where Hawkeye goes to comfort Cora has been deleted. There is a much longer version of the Uncas funeral scene. Chingach#### talks about the Frontier life and how it is changing.Hawkeye's statement to Major Heyward in the Fort, "Someday you and I are going to have a serious disagreement," has been removed. At night in the burial ground, Hawkeye's line about his father saying "Do not try to understand them, and do not make them try to understand you, for they are a breed apart and make no sense," and Cora's response later have been deleted. When escaping in the canoes Hawkeye's line "Isn't there anything better to do on the lake today, Major?" has been deleted.Cora's line behind the waterfall, "If the worse should happen, if only one of us survives, something of the other does too," and the first part of Hawkeye's following speech have been deleted. After telling Major Heyward that he ain't no scout, and ain't in no damn militia, Hawkeye's line "Clear it up any?" has been deleted. The Director's Definitive Cut Blu-ray reinserts the Clannad song 'I Will Find You' but it is not the version from the Theatrical Cut or the soundtrack album. The song now plays over an extended sequence of shots and none of the lyrics are English. Previously in the Theatrical Cut the sequence was significantly shorter and the beginning of the song was sung in English.

The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down

A mockumentary/how to guide to partying in L.A. I enjoyed it a lot. It is to LA hipsters what SLC Punk was to punk rockers. Very entertaining if you can get into it, its on instant watch.

3.5/5

Four LionsComedy writer Christopher Morris makes his feature directorial debut with this outrageous comedy about a group of young Islamic Brits who fancy themselves bloodthirsty jihadis of the first order. The film showcases Morris's satirical talents at their vicious best in a scathingly hilarious indictment of true believers and the social systems that create them. Viewers took note and bestowed it the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the L.A. Film Festival
i've heard nothing but good about this & that it was quite a sensation over there. British comedies have a much greater chance to be original because they dont have to go to the same place that American comedies do in order to get made.:edit: and, if youre indeed new to the boards & not aliasing - welcome

Galaxy Quest

Decided to re-watch this one. Fun family movie, especially since we've been watching the original Star Trek series these days.

I haven't seen it in years so it may not hold up well and it definitely takes itself seriously, certainly more than it would if it were made today. Today Nazis fighting Demons = instant camp. In the 80s not so much. But it has a great cast with Prochnow, McKellen and Byrne and I like Scott Glenn though he isn't really an a-lister, and I thought it was creepy and fun to watch.
