The Fisher King:

There were some fantastic moments in here, but overall I found it a little too long and a little too much. Gilliam seems to be one of those directors who I appreciate and root for, but never really end up loving his movies. I think the only exceptions are The Holy Grail and 12 Monkeys. Still, underneath it all, this movie had a great story that is well worth checking out. 6/10

Brazil is one of those that I personally think is genius, but I would never recommend it to 99% of people. Most would hate it, but I think it's wonderful.

it starts off really strong before settling in somewhat to a less funny, less wry tale. gilliam has a hard time reining williams in. still a fantastic movie and it has one of my most favorite
in movie history.

Thought this one was laughably bad. I know it was targeted at the MTV crowd that is now over 20 years younger than me. Brazil has been recommended to me as being the perfect movie for me more times than all other films combined. Probably more of a message in that than what the film offered.Much as i'm supposed to & have tried, i dont like Terry Gilliam movies. Not even Fear & Loathing worked for me. The only one i've successfully revisited was Fisher King. Fell in love with it on my 3rd try, fell right out on my 4th. Now, i watch when it's on & am pretty sure my bipolarity determines more of how i'll feel about it than the quality of the film itself.

awful. you know how when there's a habit in people that you find drives you nutz, you eventually find out that it ends up to reflect something you hate in yourself? that's the level upon which i react to Terry Gilliam movies. his own dazzle-you-with-card-tricks-then-punch-you-in-the-solar-plexus style is too close to my own conceits for me to be anything but irritated by it.

The Guard. Two things for sure:1. Funniest movie of 2011.2. Brendan Gleeson's performance blew away any other. Just knocked it out of the park on every level. A classic. Ridiculous to see who got nominated for best actor after seeing this.3.5 out of 4 stars.
:goodposting: This was better than most of the crap getting nominated for stuff.
I just watched this last night. It is awesome.I did have to put on subtitles, though.

Youre nuts...12 Monkeys is greatETA: And I dont get all the critical acclaim for Brazil. Its like its so bizarre that people think it has to be genius or something.

First one was hit or miss but overall decent. The second one had me in stitches. I thought it was freaking genius (even though I understand why others would not see it that way). One of my 5 favorite comedies from the last decade (I haven't made a list but I'm pretty sure about that). I was hoping the third would be at least equal to the first but it was just not good.

First was much better than decent, it was great. I dont remember the 2nd being better, but I was pretty hammered when I saw it.

I like The Monty Python Movies. Didn't he direct those? Otherwise, I mostly agree.

I'm willing to revisit the first one but for me comparing the first time watching each, Guantanamo Bay>>>>>>>>>>>>>White Castle.

I seem to be becoming very impatient with movies. Only made it about halfway through Drive. SAY SOMETHING!!!!

Thought this one was laughably bad. I know it was targeted at the MTV crowd that is now over 20 years younger than me. The main thing it did was replace story for a few huge dancing sets with what looked like 40+ people. So if you dig hip/hop and newer country music and dancing I can see how people like this one as well if not more than the original.

The main thing this one whiffed on is that no matter how much they said it, I never go the 'isolated' feel that the first one had going for it. In the sequence where they sneak off to go dancing, it seems like they are about 20mins away from a pretty big city. In '84 they had to go that far just to get to a dive bar to dance. Also, like most remakes, they had to over explain everything - so you know from the very first scene why the town is the way it is. You don't get that good reveal scene like in the first one about Ariel's brother.

They also struck out on the acting big time. Quaid replacing Lithgow as the preacher was a joke, the kid they got for Ren was a dancer without acting experience I think, and I thought Willard was terrible in this as well. Basically it felt like everybody was going through the motions until they got to show off their dancing again. I only saw 2 improvements - the uncle character was good as an adult figure who sticks up for Ren, and Ariel is better to look at. Everything else was garbage. 4/10
The original wasn't a very good movie either.

I found it to be a refreshing change of pace from the Tarantino inspired flicks where they talk for no reason. Nothing wrong with talking only when something needs to be said and no reason a hero can't be a man of few words.

Galaxy Quest

Decided to re-watch this one. Fun family movie, especially since we've been watching the original Star Trek series these days.
Love this.
 I think Evolution also fits this mold of tongue in cheek campy sci-fi that works!
Wait... tne Duchovny thing? Hated that.
Same here. I'm a big fan of Duchovny, Julianne Moore and Ivan Reitman and I thought that film was pretty bad.

Sure. The original has cheesy scenes like the barn dancing and tractor fight. I still think there is some good performances in that one, and it had heart. Not the best movie from the era, but I still have a soft spot for it.

Evolution is a full on schtick/spoof on sci-fi. Its been a decade since Ive seen it probably, but I still remember it for that, and liking it enough. Duchovny and Moore were fine, and Orlando Jones and Stifler were good in their supporting roles. Also has Ted Levine, Akroyd, Sarah Silverman in smaller roles.

Anyone see Hannah - the girl raised to be a assassin...

I really enjoyed this movie. I'm not sure about the ending completely, not sure what I would have done but overall a very good action/drama flick.

I wish they tied up a couple more ends at the end but it was still pretty good.

Can we assume they killed the family?

I thought Hanna was a big disappointment. A great premise that didn't deliver. If they'd replaced some of the closeup shots of her sad, sad face with a little bit of asskicking, I would have probably liked it. It was a dull film, and if it had a point I never caught it.I could see how folks who liked Drive might like Hanna as well, though. Just not for me.

Watched Young Adult. Wasn't surprised to find it to be a little overrated, given Diablo Cody's involvement, but it was pretty OK I suppose. Good characters and performances from Charlize Theron and Patton Oswalt. Some funny dialogue, and the premise was good. Not something I'd be eager to watch again though. Quirky and hip. I'd rate it with Juno.

I agree with KP on Hugo, it was just kind of a dud for me. The boy can't act, the girl from Kick ### does OK muddling through a phony British accent but there's nothing inspiring here. Sasha Baron Cohen and Emily Mortimer are wasted. Aside from the visuals it seemed like a big waste of time, even moreso than Avatar, which at least had giant smurfs on pterodactyls. All of us in this house loved The Artist, but none of us liked Hugo.
This. I was never engaged by the story or characters in Hugo. Maybe if Avatar had never been made it would have had a wow factor for me, but I doubt it.
I have pretty much the same response. I can't argue with the a strongly made and organized film, but it just felt boring. Also felt like the tone jumps from "kids' movie" to "adult movie enthusiasts' movie" too much and never really lands on either one. Also- watching on non-3D tv made it super evident that there were "wow" 3D scenes/moments thrown in for effect that felt a little like filler when not in the desired dimensions.Question about the book- did it include the whole film element in it? I got the sense while watching and guessed that Scorcese got a bit bored with the train station idea and needed something to interest him, so added the silent film director story. I'm sure I'm wrong there- just saying what it felt like while watching.

I really liked Hanna. IIRC, I admired how it conveyed a fairy-tale tone throughout, with just the right amount of ###-kicking to support it without being gratuitous. Thought the technical and imaginatove aspects of the film were really well done: lighting, sound, art-direction, direction- they all popped for me enough to appreciate them and the movie. And I have no interest in seeing Drive.

And I have no interest in seeing Drive.
This I don't understand. I can understand seeing it and not liking it but not even giving it a chance?
 seeing the trailers never made we want to watch it.. Probably shouldn't base my viewings solely on trailers, but if a trailer doesn't "draw me in" I have a hard time feeling the need to watch it. So many movies I want to see and so little time that the Trailer better peak my interest or it has zero chance of hitting my "My see" list. When it reaches basic cable, and there isn't anything else on, then I may give it a shot.

I was really directing that comment specifically at Floppo not at the entirety of the movie viewing audience. It just seems to be one of those films that evokes a strong response either way and has been discussed at length in this thread. I was on the fence about it myself, actually that's not true I dismissed it outright, but it was discussed so much here that eventually I decided that I should form my own opinion rather than dismiss it outright. I am very happy I did.

it had Rosanna's li'l sis nekkid & running and that's about it.

Margin Call

Watched this afternoon while wife was doing first afternoon of jury duty selection.

Excellent cast, real drama, and timely, important subject matter. Spacey was, again, incredible. You'll feel dirty when you leave, but you will have just seen one of the best pictures this year. Just go see it. Don't worry a bit about it being too dry or cerebral or anything. It is extremely well done on several levels and one of the best endings to a film I've seen.

4.8/5 stars
agree with all of this. can't think of a better movie I've seen that came out in 2011.I'm surprised a first-time director was able to get this cast. Great screenplay.

DVR'd this on HBO Saturday and I plan to watch it this weekend. I'm looking forward to it, if not only for the Chemical Brothers soundtrack.

The Life and Times of Tim

I have been watching a lot more of this HBO comedy, and I am becoming a big fan. You really need to check this show out. It's very dry, but hilarious. Give it several episodes, because it's an aesthetic that grows on you.. I am re-watching episodes I'd already seen before and laughing more the second time around.

I'll watch it from the chat here. But from the trailers, it looked to be like one of the "Fast and the Furious" movies. Never wanted to see one of them.
