we need a wallaby update
A lot of ins, a lot of outs, a lot of what have you's. I think we may have someone on our boards that deserves a punch in the face. I can't comment too much more on it. Won't be any updates for a while. I didn't want to give the offender any personal satisfaction by complaining about it.

Caught up on some silly horror movies too:

Freddy vs. Jason:

This one is a weird combination of silly and actually quite good for the series. Though it was the sole reason for the movie, the final battle didn't do a whole lot for me, but I was impressed with how they got them together and thought that was quite well done. A must see for fans of these series - I would say it's the 3rd or 4th best Jason movie, and 2nd or 3rd best Freddy movie.

Hatchet:

Decent little slasher movie from the last few years. Kids take a haunted swamp tour and get stalked by madman Victor Crowley (played by the dude who did the late-era Jason). It brought nothing new to the genre, but thought it was a fun throwback to the 80s slasher movies. Now they have the ability to put in a ton of gore that they couldn't do then though - this one is bloody as hell. I would put this one on par with some of the better Friday the 13th movies.

Child's Play:

Been years and years since I have seen this one. Unfortunately it does not hold up very well. There are a couple quite tense scenes that I was impressed with, but that is enveloped in 80s crap for the most part. Thought I remember liking the 2nd one more at the time, so maybe I will revisit that one soon too.
If you are on a horror kick, and you haven't seen it already, I really recommend Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon it has a really nice balance of satire (not over the top like Tucker & Dale) and slasher. It is not perfect but I thought it was creative and very entertaining.

Trying to watch The Grey but this movie is awful so far.
Sorry you're not enjoying it. I found it to be one of the more interesting films I have seen this year.
It seems to be a like it or loathe it movie. I liked it a lot.
wow. I really hated that movie.
It's okay. We're still friends.
I just like Neeson's character. "All right, I was going to kill myself, but if I go out, it's going to me on my terms, not at the teeth of some ####### animal. Besides I have enough humanity left in me to know that if I don't help you idiots out you're all screwed, so let's go."
Haven't seen it. The wolves are the bad guys here? I just have a hard time rooting against animals as antagonists.

I absolutely loved it, of course I was tripping balls in the theater. But it was an incredible experience.
Dude, any movie's great when you're frying.

Am I right to assume when you guys are talking about the best TV show all time you're actually talking about the best TV drama shows of all time? If not, Arrested Development needs to be in the top tier of any list.

I love AD. Although, if we're talking pure comedy, Futurama and The Simpsons are funnier than AD.I know a lot of time has passed, but one of the core reasons all these shows are so good is Hill Street Blues. I think it belongs in the conversation.

For horror movies, I feel like I was about 5 years ago with metal music. Love both and grew up with both, but was #####ing that nothing good has come out recently. "oh, the good old days..." Anyway, a lot of that reasoning for music was laziness - I just wasn't looking hard enough or in the correct places. Since then I have found tons of stuff I dig. So- I catch myself saying the same thing about horror movies. Sure, there is a lot of crap (our store is flooded with a lot of straight to DVD crap every week), but I really wasn't trying too hard to dig deep into the horror from the past decade or so. I have been looking through lists and trying to weed out a lot of the crap and have written down quite a few that have been showing up a few places. At the same time I am trying to revisit a lot of these series and movies that I had held up so high in my mind and seeing if there is still reason for that.

Sorry for the mini rant - all that to tell you that Behind the Mask was the next on my list, so I am glad that you recommend it. I had forgotten about it until I saw the trailer before Hatchet. I will see if my new store has it tonight. This and I am finally going to get around to watching Martyrs. :scared:

I just watched a movie on IFC called "The exam". It's basically about 8 people who are trying to get a top spot with a major corporation, who have to answer one interview question in 80 minutes. They are all kept in the same room together. Unfortunately, they are not told what the question is.

Very interesting movie. Not great, but very interesting. Anybody see this movie?

Not to sure what you mean by pure comedy, but I laugh harder and more frequently from watching Arrested Development than I do from any other TV show. Good call on Futurama though, that show doesn't get the love it deserves.

It's been awhile but I thought it was good.

I watched this probably 6 months ago and I don't remember 1 thing about it. I would have to look up my netflix rating to know if I even liked it or not.

City Of God:

Finally got around to watching this one. This was a good film, but I didn't think it was great or the best foreign movie in years like I keep seeing it rated as. I understand that maybe it's just my dislike for gangster/mob movies which this takes the tone of. There were several problems I had that I just couldn't shake - voiceover, lack of buildup of the underlying story of the narrator, and the ending of the movie fell flat for me, mainly:

1. The narrator and his camera. This was a supposedly big story arc in the film, but wasn't really touched on that much until the end of the movie. I was just hoping for more buildup with him and thought we would slowly watch him deal with things - the first 1/2+ of the movie was basically watching heads of the drug trade get eliminated every 10mins.

2. The silly 'Scooby Doo' reveal about the kid who shoots Karate Mike/Knockout Ned (whatever the hell his name was) got a groan out of me. Felt like a Saw reveal - where we were supposed to pick up on this 2sec statement from the kid and care about that.

3. The very end with the kids talking about who they are going to kill off first. Seems like there were always a #2 guy waiting to take over the slums, but now at the end of the movie it's going to be run by a bunch of 10 year olds?
Long story short, I liked the movie, but the last 20mins or so really left a bad taste in my mouth and knocked the movie down in ratings a bit. Regardless, I am glad I got around to watching it. 6.5/10

Its been too long since Ive seen this to really comment on your complaints, but I love how your hate for voiceover even spans language barriers

Ive seen FvsJ a few times now, and agree its pretty good and better than it seems to get credit for. Feels like it just got dismissed from the get go as a money grab. Not even sure if Ive seen an entire Child's Play before the ones with Jennifer Tilly (so 1 of the first 3 I think), but it just makes me think whoever started that series was really high and watching those movies with John Ritter and the ginger troublemaker kid, and voila.

Free your mind and the rest will follow!Planning a trip up to the MN Zoo to experience Prometheous the same way in the next week or two. You in, Andy?
I must say that Prometheus is probably a bad movie to see if you're frying. Too dark and violent. Weed would be more appropriate.
I was actually thinking the opposite. I think Prometheus has so many open-ended/unanswered questions, thoughts about the beginning, progression, and downfall of man, etc that tripping would be great for it. The fact that it is visually stunning if not mindbending at times, completely immerses you in its world, and nothing truly scary is just icing on the cake

The Change-Up....Maybe I just had really low expectations, but I thought this had as much funny dialogue as any recent comedy. I think expectations have less of an impact with comedies because you either find something funny or you dont though...Pretty explicit language, tons of f-bombs, so if that bothers you I guess pass on this one. I thought this was one of those movies where the F's felt natural and didnt clutter the dialogue or seem overkill, but then again I swear a lot myself. Thought Bateman did a good job apeing Reynolds schtick, Reynolds was ok. Reynolds character had so many great lines early though that I almost wish this wasnt a switch bodies movie because I felt like it was a little reined in for Bateman in that sense, and a perfect role for Reynolds. Of recent comedies, I might compare it to Hall Pass, but funnier and more consistent, funny until the end which many struggle with. With comedies like this though, theyre limited for me because of the gimmick so its hard to reach its potential as a really good or memorable comedy. Instead of a switch em up movie, make this a one where Bateman gets divorced (or is longtime single, bad with women, etc) and Reynolds is a haphazard overconfident matchmaker and you have gold. Definitely funnier than it is good, but still worth the watch..3.3/5

ETA: 4/5 just going on laugh out loud humor. Starts out with bathroom humor but dont remember anything in that sense after it.

Liam is in the afterlife. The other characters are part of what he created. There were no wolves, they were demons.
My theory is that Liam offed himself that first night he left the mess hall with his rifle. He was able to find peace after killing the pack leader. It didn't matter what direction they were heading because he was going to the epicenter no matter what. The wolves were ridiculous because they were exaggerated on purpose. The wolves were the only thing he really knew and understood so it was what he personified as his foe.
Do you think this was the honest intention of the filmmakers? Because if the story is taken literally, the eye-rolling moments are off the charts.

So I am probably going to take some crap for this but here goes. Saw John Carter last night. I don't get the hate I've heard. I thought it was actually not too bad. I have certainly seen way worse. Watched Game of Shadows as well and while I don't remember it getting killed in reviews I don't think it was significantly better. Now it had better actors but overall I don't think I was entertained any more by it and on the pure fun scale I think Carter was a tad ahead.

However, everything I had read leading up to the film had the director framing it as a realistic man vs nature survival ordeal. Maybe he was purposely full of crap in those interviews and I was easily misled, I don't know. Either way, your theory improves the film tremendously. I might see it again with that mindset and probably enjoy it a lot more.

Yeah, kind of hard to do something like that on accident. That's why I like experiencing movies like this in that kind of condition, it gives you a completely different lens. But I've re-watched it a couple times and everything seems to match that theory.

I know you all discuss some tv series in here. Is The Killing worth watching? The end of Season 1 is spoiled for me because I heard about it a lot in the media last year. But does Season 2 make Season 1 worth watching? Been looking for a new series on Netflix Instant.

Am I the only one psyched for this?

Dredd

I don't remember seeing it on any of the remakes lists that have floated around recently.

it looks pretty awful. perhaps the only reason i would give it a second glance is because alex garland wrote the screenplay. he's hit-or-miss as a writer but this could be one of those good ones from him.

I call an official ban on mockery. What is this, the NYU film school?(The movie wasn't bad at all.)

That doesn't mean it was at all good. It was just okay.
John Carter - I have never read the book but I was trying to imagine what the biggest flop in the history of film might possibly look like so I watched it. It's not great, not really even very good but this is not the worst film ever made so that's something, right?
Average action flick for 2012, could be worse, not as bad as all that. Although still not something you should go out of your way to see.
In trying to think of recent action adventure films to compare it to the new Conan and Prince of Persia come to mind and I think it was certainly better than either of those. Of course that isn't saying much.

I tried watching John Carter but it was way too "Disney" for me right away and I shut it off before getting into it. I'm sure I'll give it another go some day.

Another problem I had with John Carter is Daryl Sabara; I can't look at him and see Edgar Rice Burroughs because all I see is his character from World's Greatest Dad. It was a little distracting. He's probably a very good actor, he was excellent in WGD but it looks like that character is gonna stick with him.

Goon: Pretty awesome. The dumbness of the main character was a little over the top but it didn't take away much. They got the hockey culture pretty much perfect. Kind of seemed like a little throw back to Slapshot. Very entertaining 4/5

God Bless America: Same idea as idiocracy but done much much better. Thought the girl in it was great and except to see her in plenty of stuff in the future. Frank was a true hero. The monologue at the end was cringe worthy and way to heavy handed. Can't believe that Bobcat wrote this. Never struck as that smart of a guy. 4/5

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Although it tails off at the end, I really enjoyed this one. Actually thought this was a better take on the 'rules' of slasher movies that Scream was. For those who don't know - this is a horror movie that is sort of a 'behind the scenes' doc following a guy as he picks out his victims and talks about how the night is going to go, etc.. Mix that with a pretty decent slasher movie and this one was quite fun. It was at it's best at the beginning and when it turned into the slasher movie at the end it lost steam. Still well worth the watch and would recommend it to fans of the genre. I would be a fun night to pair it with Tucker and Dale, Scream, Zombieland, etc..

21 Jump Street:

Don't think I loved it as much as others, but I was quite surprised how much I laughed during this one. It was very self-aware and that's what made it such a blast to watch. The stuff from the trailers that made me not want to watch the movie seemed to be over in the first 20mns or so. Really liked the take on what the popular kids in HS are like now vs. a decade ago and how our 2 heroes struggle with that. Also worth it for the scenes of the kids tripping on WTF. Might have lost some points for me because I think skinny Jonah Hill is ####in' creepy.
