So I am probably going to take some crap for this but here goes. Saw John Carter last night. I don't get the hate I've heard. I thought it was actually not too bad. I have certainly seen way worse. Watched Game of Shadows as well and while I don't remember it getting killed in reviews I don't think it was significantly better. Now it had better actors but overall I don't think I was entertained any more by it and on the pure fun scale I think Carter was a tad ahead.

I call an official ban on mockery. What is this, the NYU film school?(The movie wasn't bad at all.)

That doesn't mean it was at all good. It was just okay.

John Carter - I have never read the book but I was trying to imagine what the biggest flop in the history of film might possibly look like so I watched it. It's not great, not really even very good but this is not the worst film ever made so that's something, right?

Average action flick for 2012, could be worse, not as bad as all that. Although still not something you should go out of your way to see.

In trying to think of recent action adventure films to compare it to the new Conan and Prince of Persia come to mind and I think it was certainly better than either of those. Of course that isn't saying much.

Brave

With How to Train Your Dragon, Dreamworks finally showed the world that Pixar wasn't the only studio that could produce beautiful, CGI animated stories. With Brave, Pixar has bounced back from a mediocre effort in Cars 2 to bring us another classic on par with the Toy Story franchise. Spectacular, funny movie. Loved it.

Halloween H20:

Been slowly going through old horror series like I stated earlier. Been awhile since I had seen this one, and think that it's one of the stronger ones of the series. They dropped all the curse and voodoo bull####, brought Laurie back, and went back to it's roots. Just like Friday the 13th only had 4-5 worth watching, I think I would recommend people just watch 1, 2, maybe 4, H20, and the remake.

Tropic Thunder:

Upon each rewatch, I think the first 1/2 or so gets funnier for me, and the 2nd part gets too "Stiller-ish" and more annoying for me. Still damn funny, but I could just use a little bit less of Ben Stiller in the movie.

Another problem I had with John Carter is Daryl Sabara; I can't look at him and see Edgar Rice Burroughs because all I see is his character from World's Greatest Dad. It was a little distracting. He's probably a very good actor, he was excellent in WGD but it looks like that character is gonna stick with him.

Never saw WGD so he was fine for me.

Haven't seen The Nines.The acting isn't the greatest, the movie doesn't leave the plain old cabin and yet the story completely makes it worth it IMO. Intriguing and thought provoking.

It is the polar opposite of something like The Kids Are Alright or The Kings Speech. High profile actors, great acting/directing and nice scenery but terribly boring stories.

Good story >>> good acting.

i was really disappointed with what they did with Watson in Season 2. Martin Freeman made S1 because he was strong & complimentary, the heart to Holmes' mind. the reason the soulless, new-age Holmes worked is that he found a partner to make sure he didnt add his own layer of bull#### while he was cutting through the bull#### of the cases. S2 didn't cop out like DAbbey2, but they missed out by riding the tightrope of high thought, motive & talk and forgetting about the heart, the core of doing good by being bad. it was fun to watch them try but, when everyone's a foil no one's a foil, making both crime & case mere exercises in sociopathy.

finally watched Super 8 - cant anyone in Hollywood do anything halfway anymore to keep the suspense, or will everything be balls-to-the-wall obvious once the tech is out of the bag?! the storytelling was quite compelling in the first half - i love the forlorn sense of family that JJAbrams puts into all his projects - but they couldnt keep the unfolding of the immense scale of developments from poisoning the story & relationships into hero-tragic, soapy nonsense. 2.52/5

The entire movie was filmed in one room and it was all a guy telling stories that another movie may have used flashbacks for. I felt that the writing and acting was pretty compelling actually as I was able to watch the whole thing and be able to imagine in my head the stories being told.

watched lena dunham's "tiny furniture" last night. i liked it even if i felt really old watching it. hard to imagine feeling that disconnected and removed from both NYC and my youth but i certainly did. it's funny, clever and very confident first feature. it's very much the wellspring for "girls" (of which i've only seen maybe 2 episodes which i kind of appreciated)though.

If you mean was there some cool climactic twist where he reveals that he actually lives forever by harvesting the souls of people he's close to and then they have some big laser pistol shootout then no, nothing ends up happening.However, the story does take a pretty big turn in the middle and there are some interesting reveals towards the end.If you didn't like the first half, though, then I doubt it's going to hook you at any point. I loved it all the way through.

I wind up seeing that movie every year or so. If I catch it on cable, it's one of those movies that I will watch through to the end. I *love* it but think it's very much a guy's movie.

One of my favorites too. I just watched it as well a few months ago, and it holds up, although it makes me realize how old I am when I see how young all those guys look, especially Dennis Quaid and Ed Harris. It's a guys movie, but I see no reason any woman wouldn't like it.

21 Jump Street:

Don't think I loved it as much as others, but I was quite surprised how much I laughed during this one. It was very self-aware and that's what made it such a blast to watch. The stuff from the trailers that made me not want to watch the movie seemed to be over in the first 20mns or so. Really liked the take on what the popular kids in HS are like now vs. a decade ago and how our 2 heroes struggle with that. Also worth it for the scenes of the kids tripping on WTF. Might have lost some points for me because I think skinny Jonah Hill is ####in' creepy.

Similar thoughts. I laughed a lot, but not really the best movie. Those scenes made me laugh so hard, particularly where they get busted for hall passes.
