Had a day off and didn't feel very well, so I revisited some movies I had seen before:
Predators:
This one has grown on me quite a bit. Would like it a lot more if Topher Grace wasn't in it.
Drive:
Yes, I still love this movie. Couple scenes I didn't dig this time around, but can't help falling for the style and look of this movie. Even the scenes of non-talking that people ##### about look gorgeous and are lit so well. Great movie.
The Fighter:
Another one that I had on my list as my favorites of that year. I love being reminded that Christian Bale can act every once in awhile, especially before seeing Batman this week. Don't usually like sports movies, but this one did such a great job with the relationships and focused more on that which was a good thing.

I really liked Predators from the first viewing, but Ive enjoyed it just as much on a few repeated viewings. The Fishburne storyarc and Topher Grace (namely how his character eventually pans out) are easily identifiable weaknesses, but for the most part the only ones for me. The other big complaint was Brody as mercenary, but I thought he was perfectly fine. Cant recall any other recent movie that starts out with
45 minutes of mystery/chaos/character development like this.
If it could have kept the level up for the last 1/2 of the movie, it would have been fantastic, but it did tail off a bit after that, and you are right that it happened about the time they met up wit Larry.
I watched Drive somewhat drunk the first time around, was disappointed. Huge expectations didnt help either. Watched it more sober the next time, and its at least in my top 3 from 2011. All around great, Gosling never disappoints.
Im right with you on sports movies, with as much as I love sports, not a big fan of them for film. I think youre spot on that The Fighter was more about family struggle than anything, and it strikes me more as a movie that is sports involved, than sports based. I think the same for Warrior. Both are some of the best "sports movies" ever IMO.
I love sports, but they are entertainment for me. Maybe it's because I was never great at them or didn't dedicate much of my life to them, but I think something that rubs me the wrong way about sports movies is that the characters seem to need this one thing in sports to make their life whole. (that and they all mostly feel the same to me). The Fighter focuses on the family more. Sure Mickey wanted the championship, but the fights were also a reason for the family to rally and reconcile their differences, Dicky to get clean, etc, etc. Maybe it just felt different to me b/c I didn't know anything about the story going in.
