Haven't seen it yet, but I cannot wait to watch Killer Joe. If anyone sees it I'd appreciate a review.

if it's awesome to you now, imagine how amazing it was in its time, just before the dawn of the media explosion, when we imagined that news would be pure, untouched by profit motive & editorial bias, as a cost-of-doing-business that networks would always pay in order to keep their licenses. Chayefsky's prescience about the corporate & media ages to follow is as incredible as were Verne's & Wells's vision in their times - as one who writes, i watch it twice a year to keep myself reminded of the scope moviewords can have.
i love "Prestige". easily one of the best of the last decade for me. i love that nolan managed to stay consistent within the film's universe and still managed to surprise. i loved the reveal. RR is a hack. he has the skills but he's proven time and again that he has no interest in getting better. he's riding in tarantino's wake to get his crummy little films made. The Prestige:
Still one of my favorite movies of the past 10 years or so. Sure the ending is pretty silly, but up until that point it is a fantastic movie. And it's not like the ending is out of left field - what I love about the movie is it's just like Michael Caine keeps telling us - you are being told what's going on with the trick/movie, you just don't want to believe it. 8/10
Desperado:
I am slowly starting to come around to Robert Rodriguez's stuff. He has flashes of brilliance, but there is something about his style and action scenes that rub me the wrong way. LOVE the opening scene with Buschemi. Liked this one more than I expected to, but overall didn't love it. 6/10
Rodriguez has the life of my wildest dreams - make movies, music, moppets, monsters & money without ever leaving home - but i havent liked one of his his films since Mariachi & i'm starting to think i even liked that because of an appreciation of what he did with so little.i love "Prestige". easily one of the best of the last decade for me. i love that nolan managed to stay consistent within the film's universe and still managed to surprise. i loved the reveal. Holy #### - a page 7 bump???

this had been popping up among the recommendations by the netflix algorithms, and i remembered it getting a positive review in the thread, so i decided ti give this a go. it was bad at all. it was pretty simple, kind of goofy time-travel story. this actress was really very lovely in a very unassuming way.Oh, and to jump into the Science fiction discussion,
Yea I didn't get the love for this either. Very weak. And while Gina Carano is easy of the eyes and has some action movie style, her acting/screen presence is atrocious. She needs a years worth of acting classes just to move up to 'bad actress'.And you're right about it being a mess. By the end I didn't care who was doing what to whom, I just wanted it to be over.Haywire - 5/10
Gina Carano is the least of this movie's problems.
What do you get when you take a Bourne movie, remove the plot, poorly edit the remainder, and have Steven Soderbergh make it cool? A mess, that's what.
Avoid.
So better to just watch thisfor a couple of hours?Yea I didn't get the love for this either. Very weak. I haven't seen this is quite some time. You'll have to forgive me on this but I want to say that Ash was displaying an inner conflict in that Asimov-way (ie, "no harm to humans"). Ash's conflict stems from orders given to him by Corporate that he couldn't easily reconcile. It makes him behave erratically. As for the alien, who says it needs to eat anyone to grow to that size? Maybe it got everything it needed from its host, Kane?AlienPrometheus was kinda better. I wasnt scared. Maybe because I knew what was coming. Why does the android go crazy and seem to malfunction? Why was he "sweating" seemingly? How did the Alien grow to the size of a man before eating anybody?
ban, plzAlien

yeah, I watched it because it came up on some random top 10 list I googled, and then got a couple posts in here, and it was pretty cool.I think I should watch it again.Oh, and to jump into the Science fiction discussion,
I'm still a little confused about why he'd murder that girl -- was he just acquiescing, at that point, that we have no control over our own fate?
pretty much my take on it. i think he finally realizes what a can of worms he's opened.yeah, I watched it because it came up on some random top 10 list I googled, and then got a couple posts in here, and it was pretty cool.I think I should watch it again.

Warner Bros. thinking about making a prequel to The Shining instead of not doing that
Keeping with Hollywood's bold "more is more" philosophy, the L.A. Times reports that Warner Bros. is "quietly" exploring the possibility of making a prequel to The Shining, Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's novel about the horrors of family vacations. "What if we hire the person who wrote Shutter Island and executive produced Avatar and say it's a 'new take' on a classic people already know? Does that count as doing our jobs?" Warner Bros. executives quietly whispered while tiptoeing around the corridors, hoping that no one would notice them and demand an actual idea or something. While the project is still in the early stages of development, its nascent premise is that the film would explore what happened at the Overlook before the Torrances arrived—horrible things that were already creepily, effectively hinted at in both the novel and original film, but which would here be spelled out into the "haunted hotel" franchise they have always demanded because it would be easy.
Of course, should it come to fruition, it's possible that a new Shining prequel could also tie into King's own previously announced sequel Dr. Sleep, with all its inclusion of vampire pirates and other things that seem like a blatant appeal to have it optioned for a movie before King even finishes writing it. And then today would be the day that The Shining suddenly turned into a trilogy, like the storytelling equivalent of just typing "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" over and over.
I would take it over that last crappy Bourne movie. But not the first two.Haywire - 5/10

That's not the main message I got from it. It's part of it but it wasn't meant to glorify the characters and I took it more as an indictment of people who have nothing better to do with their lives than to hate celebrities and reality shows (God Bless America- It's not that I was offended by what Bobcat was doing here, but I'm not sure if it was a statement he was trying to make or if he's just exploiting/capitalizing people's hatred of the stupid. Given the Aurora massacre, the movie theater scene was a little tough to take. I guess it's over my head but I don't get the point of this. Granted, I haven't actually finished it yet and I'm not sure if I will. I'm a fan of Natural Born Killers and at least that movie had some artistry and meaning to it. This was just very cold and flat. Not my cup of tea I guess.
).Looks like [REC]3 is even worse.[REC]:
Still one of my favorite horror movies of the last 10 years or so. There are some great scares in here - even when I know what's coming, a couple scenes at the end of the movie when they get to the last room get me to jump. 7.5/10.
Wanted to rewatch it before finally getting around to..
[REC]2:
Damn that sequelitis. This time around we follow a SWAT team into the apartment building to figure out what's going on. Does the mistake that most sequels/prequels/remakes do, and tried to over explain everything. The great thing about the first was the feeling of WTF is going on just like the people trapped in the building. Here we have priests, possessions, conspiracies, etc, etc... hard to build up the level of dread the first one had when that stuff is being explained to you. 4/10
You know, I finally finished it over the course of three nights. It actually turned out better than I thought it would after the opening scene, but I still didn't about anything that was happening. Especially had a problem with John Carter schooling these seemingly all powerful beings. Generous 5/10 for the ending, hot chick and aliens (who didn't like that dog thing?).Just finished John Carter. One of the most boring action flicks I have ever seen. .01/10
How can you not like Psych? That show is a riot.i've needed some lighter fare - serial tv programming - to entertain myself. i wanted to revisit "the shield" (not light, i know) but it's not streaming on netflix. same with "justified". i opted for "white collar" from the good people of USA network. it's light, entertaining and takes place in NYC. it's a bargain. i can't bring myself to watch "psych", "monk", "royal pains", "burn notice", or any of the other ridiculous USA shows. i'm a couple of episodes in to "WC" and it's best of breed.
Eh. I have only seen it a few times and I never found it funny. I recognize they have a good chemistry - the leads - but everything else about it bores me to tears. Same with "Monk" and the rest of the USA shows. I haven't seen that sports-psychology show - "Necessary Roughness" maybe? - but I'm not in any hurry either.'Andy Dufresne said:How can you not like Psych? Man, I was in love with Shanna Moakler back in the day, then I heard the drummer from blink-187 married her and it ruined everything for me.I forgive youI strongly recommend Teensnow.com. The dialogue isn't always the best, but one can look past that.Oops..wrong thread![]()

Olson Jr. Very hot. I liked her performance, but felt like she relied on looking down a lot to convey her character... dunno- maybe that's a genuine trait of "lost" people but it felt a bit forced by the end.I pretty much agree with all this.Saw Marcy May Martha McGuffin.

The movie was pretty ravishing to look at though, and the director did a nice job telling the story in a fairly subtle way. Dialogue was spare and often misguided in a very believable way. That helped the actors do their jobs uniformly well, IMO. Also thought the cinematography was amazing- some really beautiful imagery throughout. I did find the narrative structure of jumping back and forth in time pretty cliche, and felt like it became really obvious when the jumps were about to happen... maybe not a terrible thing, but annoying to me.
I think Krista used a word like "empty" or "trifle" in describing this, and ultimately I don't disagree. I had the feeling while watching that this was a Sofia Coppola movie- beautifully rendered but ultimately shallow. I still enjoyed it, and found the subject matter interesting even if it didn't hit any highs for me.
Oh- a question about the end (and I actually love having questions about endings, rather than having everything pat and clear):
She gets in the car... with her sister and BIL, and they pass somebody walking? Who then gets in the car that starts following them? What went on in that last scene? Is it implied that those were the cult people who were following her?
