I took 5yo Floppolinho to see Paranorman in 2D. He'd enjoy pretty much anything, but after all the Pixar and whoever makes the Train the Dragon etc movies, this was pretty weak to me. Not funny enough at any level (his or mine) and not terribly interesting. Some of the stop-motion animation was pretty amazing- especially the atmospheric effects, but overall I wouldn't recommend. I was hoping to take him to Brave, but he wasn't interested.

American Splendor

Haven't watched this movie in a long time, and it really held up. Love it.
As good as Giamatti is in it, Hope Davis is every bit as good in this. I've been kind of in love with her since "The Daytrippers".
Oh wow- The Daytrippers. I remember not caring for that one too much. Is Parker Posey in that too? IIRC, that came out at a time when it was mandated that every indie-film had to have her in at least a bit role.
It's kind of a who's who of indie cinema at the time: Hope, Liev Schrieber, Parker, Elaine May and Stanley Tucci. I liked it as a gentle kind of comedy very much of its time.

Too bad he didn't want to see Brave. It was excellent.

I told him JDoggy from the infowebz said so, but he doesn't like the cut of your jib.

Lawless.

Was hoping this would be good and was suprised it was actually better then I expected.

Great performances across the board. Tom Hardy steals every scene. Just a soon-to-be star bringing it. Movie would have been better served if it focused more on him and jettisoned much of the Labouf storyline. Hardy does get a lot of screen time but you wouldn't know it by the previews.

Guy Pearce delivered a great villain performance. The guy from Brotherhood was good too. Gary Oldman had a few scenes which were good but not sure why he agreed to such a bit part.

Chastain and Wasikoswki looked amazing.

Movie is not perfect. Labouf is a bit weak and some of the scenes were clunky. But some top-notch performances, great music and cinematography. This director did The Proposition which was a good one.

3 out of 4 stars. Solid flick and odd that with such a cast it seemingly got dumped this weekend.
Screenplay written by Nick Cave, btw.
Guy Pearce's character was one of the more sadistic on-screen portrayals in recent memory. He was outstanding - absolutely frightening in every scene he was in. I loved the way they captured Prohibition-era rural Virginia in the 1930's. Its only 80 years ago but it felt like it was 200 the way they lived - wood houses, basic amenities and the cross-section of society living side by side (devout Christians and renegade bootleggers living shoulder to shoulder)

Also, another shout out to the soundtrack. Appalachian foothill blues and country ballads that perfectly intermingle with a solemn, gritty storyline. Also agree that we couldve done with more Tom Hardy and less Shia Lebouf but it doesnt take away from an above average flick.

7.5 or 8 out of 10.
saw this last night at the Arclight. I'll give it about a 7...maybe even 6.5. some great performances, but it just didn't come together for me the way it could have. I'm one of the people that actually thinks Shia is a better actor than people give him credit for, and Tom Hardy is always nails. but it was just kind of anticlimactic at the end. and what's up with Gary Oldman having about 5 minutes of screen time? weak.if you see it, I would definitely suggest going to a theater with good sound. when Shia was in the church and they were singing that hymn, I could feel it all the way through my bones. amazing sound in that scene.

oh, and the tall dorky guy from Avatar was in the same theater, and even he said with a cast like that, he was disappointed in what a clunker it was.

It's not a great movie but with the odd marketing campaign and that they dumped it on Labor Day weekend it lessened expecations. Think many reviewers were surprised that it was actually pretty entertaining. The ending was clunky though. 65% on RT is about right IMO.

I watched vanilla sky on Netflix yesterday. Never seen it. I thought it was fantastic. There are some places it could have been better but I thought it was really good.

Anyone else have the issue that whenever you click on the little orange box to go to the first unread post for this thread it always goes to the most recent post instead? The weird thing is that issue doesn't happen for any other threads on FBG for me...

 :hifive:Loses a bit of steam in the third act but is still a great film.
My change: instead of tech support revealing that after the night club he never saw her again and he won back control and then killed himself from depression I think it should have been the night club was his own celebration of his last night alive. LE was following him, gets him after he's in the gutter, and then kill/freeze takes place. Btw - I figured out what was happening when hes walking with sophia and it was the Dylan cover. I thought "none of this Is real"

The Fisher King:

There were some fantastic moments in here, but overall I found it a little too long and a little too much. Gilliam seems to be one of those directors who I appreciate and root for, but never really end up loving his movies. I think the only exceptions are The Holy Grail and 12 Monkeys. Still, underneath it all, this movie had a great story that is well worth checking out. 6/10
Brazil is one of those that I personally think is genius, but I would never recommend it to 99% of people. Most would hate it, but I think it's wonderful.
Brazil has been recommended to me as being the perfect movie for me more times than all other films combined. Probably more of a message in that than what the film offered.Much as i'm supposed to & have tried, i dont like Terry Gilliam movies. Not even Fear & Loathing worked for me. The only one i've successfully revisited was Fisher King. Fell in love with it on my 3rd try, fell right out on my 4th. Now, i watch when it's on & am pretty sure my bipolarity determines more of how i'll feel about it than the quality of the film itself.
What about 12 Monkeys? That's an all-time favorite of mine.
:goodposting: Finally got around to watching 12 Monkeys. Great film. :banned:

Life in a Day

Beautiful documentary where several people film 24 hours of their lives - all on the same day. Stunning. Could make the perfect double feature with Tree of Life.

That just happened to me when I clicked into this thread.

Saw Moonrise Kingdom last night. Loved Anderson's ability to tell the story at almost every level through the sensibilities of the young adoloescent lovers. It felt like we were in one of Suzy's novels, with enough magical realism, heroism and plenty of Anderson direction (lots of central points of focus with symmetries on the screen). He does something with his lighting or camera focus or... something... that makes his movies look like you're in a fantastically rendered scale model. Maybe that it's everything seeming like it belongs in a really scripted/designed way? Dunno, but a real joy to watch him films for me. And I'll admit I fell for both kids in this one which brought the film into a level above some of his lesser works for me.

Just watched Moon last night. Very good sci-fi flick.

Sam Bell has a three year contract to work for Lunar Industries. For the contract's entire duration, he is the sole employee based at their lunar station. His primary job responsibility is to harvest and periodically rocket back to Earth supplies of helium-3, the current clean and abundant fuel used on Earth. There is no direct communication link available between the lunar station and Earth, so his only direct real-time interaction is with GERTY, the intelligent computer whose function is to attend to his day to day needs. With such little human contact and all of it indirect, he feels that three years is far too long to be so isolated; he knows he is beginning to hallucinate as the end of his three years approaches. All he wants is to return to Earth to be with his wife Tess and their infant daughter Eve, who was born just prior to his leaving for this job. With two weeks to go, he gets into an accident at one of the mechanical harvesters and is rendered unconscious...

I knew you/we would like it. It's interesting to me where you/we differ in appreciation of his films.

Dark Shadows: Uh... at least it was trying to be different. Dozed off a couple times during and it seemed that every time I woke up it was like a musical. Will not put it on again. INC/5

Snow White and the Huntsmen: Looked good. Sounded good. That was about it. I'm pretty sure I wasn't the target audience. The gf liked it. 2/5

You didn't like it?Here's a list of his films, and my order of preference. Only one that didn't work for me was Darjeeling.

2012 Moonrise Kingdom (4)

2009 Fantastic Mr. Fox (3)

2007 The Darjeeling Limited (7)

2004 The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (5)

2001 The Royal Tenenbaums (6)

1998 Rushmore (2)

1996 Bottle Rocket (1)

Kalifornia

I loved this movie the first time I saw it. Brad Pitt is excellent as a sociopathic killer here. But the other elements in this movie have not held up well. The writing is sophomoric, Duchovny is dull, and Juliette Lewis played the same character in a better movie (Natural Born Killers). Still worth watching for Pitt, but the movie didn't age well.

hated it when i saw it back in the day. the only two people who are interesting on screen are pitt and forbes. pitt, for his part, is doing just another in a succession of similar roles. the difference is it's early in his career. by the 30th time juliette lewis says,"Errr-leeee", anyone will want to punch her in the throat. repeatedly. i cringe just thinking about her in the movie. duchovny, in contrast, is just inert and does that deadpan-bordering-on-leaden thing he does. brutal movie. could have used nicolas cage very badly to punch it up.

You're right: Forbes and Pitt were far more interesting than Duchovny and Lewis. Not sure I agree that Pitt has many roles like this, though. Which ones?

Couldn't sleep last night and actually watched, from start to finish, The Condemned with Steve Austin.

If I had to give it some credit for something, the fight scenes were mildly entertaining. For 3 in the morning. A little.

enlightened and/or visionary white trash? ti's something he taps into and is pretty successful with. "fight club", "12 monkeys", "assassination of jesse...", and "inglorious basterds" are all a variation of that over-the-top hillbilly thing he does to act up a storm.

I agree with Inglorious, but not with Fight Club.

He has a lot of talent as a character actor, IMO. Fight Club and 12 Monkeys were great performances. I didn't like him in IG though.

I like both Fight Club and 12 Monkeys enough to cut him some slack. he was going for something in those at least as opposed to simply raising the volume. he's better when he dials it down just a notch.

Loved him in Inglorious. A contrast to all the eloquent, mellifluous characters.

Win Win

This trailer looked terrible. Coach helps struggling kid? Boooooring. But I loved this movie. Giamatti is always great. Highly recommended.

Maybe the most underratted movie of last year. I'll take Giamatti(Win-Win) over Clooney(Descendants).
Win Win was excellent. Loved it.I've been avoiding The Descendants.
Both Win Win and The Descendants were very good.

The Cabin in the Woods:

Been a while since I have been surprised by a movie, so it gets major props for that. Not quite a great as I was expecting, but still a damn fun watch (probably will grow on me more with repeat viewings). Has all the humor and referencing horror movies that you would expect with Joss involved. Got a tad absurd at the end, but then again, that was part of the fun. Long story short, I think most horror fans will dig this. The less you know going in, the better. 7/10 (for now)
