I liked Sucker Punch but after its over you will think of a million things that could have made the story better. The visuals are fantastic.
What was the deal with the ending? I dont remember my beef exactly, but I found it ambiguous (in a bad way) and frustrating. That was probably my biggest complaint with the movie. I knew about the great visuals but I thought it was better than I expected. Still only like a 2.5/5 or so though.

House At The End Of The Street....Despite having terrible ratings, went with this one as I needed to see some more Jennifer Lawrence after she made me hot and bothered while watching Silver Linings Playbook recently. First off, this movie was terribly marketed. The ads made it look like a horror movie, but its much more of a dark thriller with a psychological edge. Maybe thats why it really got panned upon release (11% on RT critics), maybe it was my low expectations, but I enjoyed it. The last half of it (45-50 minutes) was non-stop suspense which I give it credit for, but plot holes and cliches somewhat take away from it. I also think it couldve used more backstory with the original family/murders, but that could have diminished the final twist/scene. Overall, the acting and chemistry by Lawrence, Elizabeth Shue ( ), and the convincing antagonist made it better than average for me...3.3/5

ETA: Apparently there is an unrated version, I watched the theatrical, and the unrated clears up my biggest problem cliche of the movie - cops goes into house where lights just went out without back-up. And after reading into this, not only does it make the sheriff's decision more plausible, but it adds an entirely new side/storyline to that character in only 1 flashback scene. Presumably this was the difference between it being PG-13 and R and thats why it was cut out. Definitely watch the unrated version which it appears is an option on the DVD that I wasnt aware of.

Argo. Very good
I would take it a notch down and say it was 'good'. The good:1. It really is a good story. 2. Affleck does a great job with tense scenes, humorous scenes, and the ability to jump between them seamlessly. The Bad:1. Affleck's character (or was it just his acting). Completely flat and boring the whole movie. 2. The completely "Hollywood" last 20 minutes. It felt to me like the actual story didn't end exciting enough for them, so they went into standard action movie mode.
We have the typical action tropes in the last scene at the airport - van not starting, problem with the doors for the bad guys, cop cars chasing them down the tarmac, producers almost not getting to the phones, etc, etc. That combined with the over the top scenes of him coming home.
Still a movie worth a viewing, but the problem with a movie like this and rating them becomes what sticks with me is the last part I was watching, and that definitely took the movie down a notch. Just the type of stock movie that the Academy drools over.

:goodposting: Completely agree.

Flight.Agree with most of the criticism this one has gotten but still found it very entertaining. Thought Denzel was superb and his performance warranted the acclaim it has received. Overall I think it was a swing and a miss but I respect the attempt. A few changes and this one could have been great.A continuous miscue was the selection of songs. Just one played out song after another. "Under the Bridge" for the heroin scene? Come on.5/10. Worth checking out especially for Nadine Velazquez's opening scene.

Mass Appeal

An under-the-radar Jack Lemmon flick from about thirty years ago.

Lemmon plays an Irish-Catholic priest who drives a Cadillac, gambles at the race track and drinks too much. But still he knows how to run a parish. Zeljko Ivanek plays a young idealistic seminary student who challenges Lemmon.

The story is a bit cliched, heavy-handed, but Lemmon's performance elevates it.

Just watched this recently. Thought it was weird how they focused on how alcohol can ruin a life, but made cocaine out to be like this wonder hangover cure. Even to the point of portraying the coke dealer as a loveble, funny guy. Strange.

You too can fly commercial airliners upside down and land them without hydraulics with just a little bit of marching powder.
Maybe the only Goodman performance I have not liked. Liked the movie though and Denzel, as usual, plays the hardass very well.

Alcohol didn't ruin his life - being an alcoholic did. Cocaine isn't magic but it's a damn powerful drug.

Batman: Dark Knight Returns Parts 1 and 2 - If you are a fan of the iconic comic/graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller you must see these movies! Very faithful to the source material. Excellent pacing and action sequences. Great voice acting by Peter Weller as Batman and Michael Emerson (Ben Linus from 'Lost') as the Joker.

Batman has been retired for 10 years, primarily as a result of the government banning all superheros from fighting injustice due to the public turning against them, but Bruce Wayne can no longer stand idly by and watch Gotham City get taken over by the new super gang The Mutants. He dusts off the cowl and gets back in the fight.

Something's Gotta Give 3/5OK, not great. It had potential but for some reason I didn't buy the Keaton-Nicholson romance. Diane Keaton's body is damn good for a 50-something at the time. This movie made me realize what an ugly man Jack Nicholson is. But we see him so much we've gotten used to his appearance.

Die Hard 5.Kinda sucked. Basically a spy movie with John McClaine thrown into it. Theres even a scene where he just kinda wanders into the middle of an action scene and stands there asking whats goin on the entire time. That about sums up the whole movie for me.Turns out his son SPOILERS

Turns out his son is a spy also named John McClaine, so im pretty sure theyre gonna try and develop a post-Bruce Willis Die Hard franchise around that.

Take Shelter - 7/10

Too long by at least 15 minutes but I liked it. You have to have patience to enjoy it and I was a bit antsy.

Super spoiler

I was surprised to read that people were struggling with the ending. Of course it's real. In fact the storm is much worse than he imagined. It's not just a couple water spouts with some rainclouds. If you look closely, the tide has receded and is forming into a giant tsunami.

"safety Not Guaranteed"

Comic Aubrey Plaza (tv's "Parks & Rec") headlines this romantic indie comedy. It has an interesting premise but never really does much with it. Duplass does some Ferrell-esque manchild thing but he's not nearly as talented. The script and storytelling are incredibly lazy. Plaza has almost no range as an actor and fails to generate much chemistry with her love interest. Skip it.

Huh. Thought it was about as obvious as possible. Not sure how people could struggle with it.

Wanderlust

Kind of what you'd suspect, but better than I thought it would be. I was pleased to see several members of The State in supporting roles.

If it is real, then it kind of ruins the movie imo. So they spend 115 min showing how Michael Shannon is crazy/paranoid, then in one last scene there's a big "A-ha!!" moment, and he turns out to be the only rational/enlightened one all along? If so that just makes the last 115 min completely pointless and a waste of time.

Refuse to watch after Aniston chickened out of the nude scene.
The movie is kinda dumb, but I must say it had some funny moments.
Does it have Jennifer Aniston's exposed boobs?
Nope. Sorry.
Then I ain't watching.

Fourth Kind:

Been avoiding this one because I have an unfounded fear of alien abduction - Fire in the Sky really gets to me. I think subconsciously I was just avoiding this movie because it's junk. They should have gone one way or the other, but putting the movie side by side with the 'real' footage was really annoying to me. I was already bracing myself for crap with the cheesy intro to the movie about the case. Didn't think it got any better from there (which for me might have been a lucky break) 4/10
Noticed this on instant watch last night, and since aliens/abduction were brought up last week and it was late and it typically takes me 20-30 minutes to decide what mediocre movie to watch on there, I just dove in. I definitely was avoiding this because it looked awful, and wish I stuck with that decision. The bolded really annoyed me, and I kept hoping they would quit with it. That intro was awful, I should have turned it off right then. WTF was the deal with the owl's anyway?! Maybe I dont fear alien abduction because if aliens did arrive, I think they'd kill me instead of abduct me, but I didnt find this scary at all, more laughable. The "real" Milla in this came off as crazy and more like a leader of a cult than a psychiatrist so that didnt help the believability either, and created a further gap since those characters seemed so disparate. Seeing Milla for 90 minutes was about the only redeeming quality...0.5/5Silver lining in this though is once I finished it recommended Fire In The Sky to me. I swear I looked for this a week ago when it was mentioned and it was NOT on instant watch, but now it is, yet its only available/gets removed from instant watch March 1st. Netflix is really frustrating sometimes :wall:

Ive gotten lazy with my reviews despite checking this thread out all the time, so digging back into some of the better stuff Ive found on instant watch over the past 6 months on Netflix that hasnt really be reviewed here (for the most part)..

Heartless...Stylistically quite an unique film. Although based in horror, it has plenty of drama - family and otherwise - with some interesting sci-fi/futuristic aspects and a touch of romance. I saw a review call it a dark urban fairytale and I think thats an apt description. Jim Sturgess stars as a guy with a startling birthmark on his face/neck who wishes for a life where he looked normal. As an underground group of demon-like creatures begins to terrorize his neighborhood, he begins to break from his norm and fight back. During this time, he gets an offer he cant refuse to finally have the chance to live the normal life he's always wanted, but with consequences. Really cool cinematography and direction. I haven't seen much of Sturgess, but I thought he was excellent here and arguably the biggest reason to see this. He really carries a film that has a lot going for it in its own right...4.5/5

I Melt With You....A unique sort of bittersweet if not depressing buddy comedy where a group of friends reunite at a beach house for a few days of fun. Stars Jeremy Piven, Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe, and some other guy. While the drama was a bit overplayed in the 2nd half, I thought enough connection was made with the characters that it still resonated. Its also a little hard to believe such a downward spiral so quickly in this film, but it didnt really bother me. Good acting, good dialogue, good cinematography. I saw this awhile ago but its stuck with me, sort of want to watch it again to really decide how well done compared to overdone it was, but its worth a watch I think..3.8/5

Roadie....Ron Eldard stars as a recently fired Blue Oyster Cult roadie who has to go back and live with his mom, where he then sort of re-evaluates what he's doing with his life and reconnects with his old GF played by Jill Hennessy. Nice little movie, good soundtrack. Ive always liked Eldard in his smaller roles, and I thought he was great here...3.2/5

The Man From Earth...watched this because of the overwhelming praise here and loved it. Definitely has a TV movie feel thanks to the cheap production, and the acting and even dialogue early on is sometimes cheesy, but I thought the lead guy did very good with it and this movie really drew me in. Felt like I was in the room, in disbelief at first but quickly convinced and engaged with the story..Running at just under 90 minutes certainly helps it as well, but I was really hoping for more as it neared the end. I'd easily add this to my list of a favorite genre I call "dialogue-centric movies that take place in 1, or only a few, locations". I'd give it better rating if not for such poor production quality and some weak links in the supporting actors..4.2/5

Welcome To Collinwood...Fun, dry comedy of sorts about a bunch of broke, petty crooks planning to pull of a big job thats bound to go wrong. Fantastic ensemble cast - Sam Rockwell, William H Macy, Luis Guzman, Isaiah Washington, George Clooney, Patricia Clarkson, Michael Jeter - that really elevate it. Sort of felt like a poor man's Ocean's 11 but with guys who have no clue what theyre doing. Id definitely watch this again, surprised its not a cult classic...4/5

Finder's Fee...Another movie like Man From Earth, that essentially takes place in just an apartment. Guy who plays the lottery daily finds a wallet with a winning ticket and contemplates what to do. Not great, and the dialogue isnt either, but the cast keeps it entertaining - James Earl Jones, Ryan Reynolds, Matthew Lillard, Dash Mihok. Surprisingly this was written and directed by the guy from Survivor, Jeff Probst...3.4/5

Wrecked...Psychological thriller starring Adrien Brody as a guy who wakes up in a car that crashed in a ravine. Has pretty much total amnesia and tries to put together who he is, who the passengers are, and how he got there. Would probably bore some people due to the lack of dialogue, probably why it wasnt a theatrical release, but I thought the storyline - how his memories returned, and what was accurate vs muddied - kept it quite entertaining. One of Brody's best performances in years...3.6/5

A Good Old Fashioned Orgy...Im surprised this one hasnt gotten more word of mouth since its DVD release. I thought this was one of the best comedies from 2011. Not quite as good as Horrible Bosses, but arguably my 2nd favorite comedy over Bad Teacher and The Change-Up (which Im also surprised hasnt got more word of mouth). If you dont like Sudeikis, you probably wont like it but I think he is getting better almost by the movie. Nick Kroll (The League) and Tyler Labine (Tucker & Dale) were also funny and really helped it....4/5

Sheitan...Part of it probably has to do with the fact that this is a French horror film, but it was a real WTF is going on, which is nothing for the most part, but as I was watching it is was so different yet surprisingly humorous that I ended up enjoying it. Dialogue is pretty good and really is what keeps Sheitan entertaining, and there's a whiteboy gangsta who is sort of unintentionally funny for a surprising change. The real reason to watch it though is Vincent Cassel who gives one of the best demented psycho performances Ive seen, with minimal lines to boot. It doesnt have any surprises really, the scares are minimal, but its fantastically creepy in a these city kids are about to get butt####ed by these French inbreds kind of way, and theyre totally oblivious to it because theyre just trying to get laid. I think some will think this is awful, but I liked it enough and Cassel was awesome...3.3/5

Monument Ave...Man, what a underrated and forgotten irish mob crime drama. Awesome script with plenty of memorable scenes thanks to extended dialogue, nice direction from Ted Demme with a gritty feel that separates it from a lot of the mob movies from the last couple decades. Denis Leary is very good, as is the entire cast - Noah Emmerich, Colm Meaney, Famke Janssen, Martin Sheen, Billy Crudup, and some other recognizable faces. This guy actually, who I finally realized looked familiar from HBO's short lived show Luck, was great and stole a ton of scenes. Nothing groundbreaking and no really great performances, but a surprisingly overlooked crime drama considering the cast and director...4/5

Middle Men...considering the cast and this was about the rise of internet pron and some guys getting filthy rich, Im not surprised I really enjoyed it but its surprisingly well done and a lot of fun. I think Luke Wilson pulled off his role as the lead well enough and didnt detract from the movie, but if they picked someone a little better - I think Edward Norton or Joaquin Phoenix wouldve been perfect - they couldve knocked it out of the park. Ribisi was awesome. A surprisingly good cast for likely a low budget movie though...I know I'll be watching this again at least a few times...4/5

The Perfect Host...Guy robs a bank, stashes the money, but needs a place to hide as he is identified and all over the news. He ends up finding a place to stay, but it ends up being a deranged killer's (David Hyde Pierce) house. DHPierce has always bothered me and weirded me out, but he was really good and this was a perfect role for him as he brought plenty of teh weird. The other guy was solid as well, and this was another one of those acting and dialogue reliant movies set in primarily one setting that I think succeeded as well. Some nice twists as it nears the end...3.6/5

Most of these still appear to be available on instant watch. Looking thru my watched list I also cant believe how many terrible horror movies I watched :bag:

thought this would be good going in but it fell short for me. Aubrey Plaza is hot though.

2014 contenders?

Drooling over here.
The Counselor, Gravity, Foxcatcher, Wolf of Wall Street all sound very good. The rest, not so much, even including most of the other possibilities listed at the bottom. The Coens one doesnt only sound boring it also looks boring but I'll of course see it anyway. I havent seen the 2 previous Before's though but I know theyre supposed to be good.

Really? I think they all sound at the very least interesting, if not really good. Though I agree, the only one that doesn't intrigue me at all is the Coen's one; the trailer for that looks really dumb.

Life story of whoever wrote Mary Poppins doesnt sound interesting at all unless there's something in her life that would make it so. The Alexander Payne one will in all likelihood be good (Really like all of his that Ive seen, though havent seen Descendents) but black and white is sort of a turn off for me, and I cant picture Will Forte as the star in his movie unless its a slapstick comedy.

Couldn't disagree more. It is not the best PTA movie, but anything he puts out is better than 90% of movies out there. The acting was great, tons of fantastic shots, and just overall a beautiful looking movie. Not as focused as a couple of his other films, but it has all of his usual obsessions in his movies - father/son dynamics, sex, power, rage, etc, etc. I thought it was one of the best movies of the year and 2 days after I watched it I am still thinking about it. 8/10

not really. Hoffman plays a leader starting up a Scientology-like religion. The movie is more about Phoenix's arc and has little to do with the religion itself.

That makes me more interested in seeing it then. As Daywalker mentioned, I was sort of avoiding this one because of the Scientology aspect although Im sure I wouldve watched it eventually regardless.

:goodposting: I'd probably give it a 9/10 myself, probably my 2nd favourite PTA film after Punch-Drunk Love. Though I can see why others would dislike it, as the film doesn't really go anywhere; there's no real climax or anything, just a measured pace from start to finish. And although the film isn't directly Scientology, there's enough allusions there from the script to the casting choices such that I wouldn't say it's not about Scientology. Though I agree with Daywalker in that I don't get how Amy Adams was nominated for that performance; she didn't have much of a presence, and I thought that was the entire point of the character, definitely felt miscast to me. Though I thought a lot of the supporting actor/actress nominations were undeserved this year.

Argo: Good... but best picture good? Maybe I was expecting too much because of the hype. Oh, and a little historical accuracy would have helped as well. I also learned that pretty much every single Iranian is hateful, cruel person. All in all, a solid US propaganda film. 3.5/5

Since when are films historically accurate? And I'd say the 2 minutes at the beginning put the anti-American hostility in the proper context.
