The Incredible Burt Wonderstone wasn't as funny as I expected. I love the I quit segment and Jim Carrey with a drill in his head, but it wasn't the ROFLLMAO movie I hoped it'd be.

I think I am still processing how I feel about this one. There really is no plot and little acting, but I still found myself glued to the screen. Think it is a beautiful looking movie and loved the feel of it. Sounds stupid, but the name that popped in my head when I was watching this was Malick. I am not saying that there is the same level of talent involved, but it did start to feel like a neon ode to him. In a way this is the 2013 Badlands. You have: teenage girl(s) falling for and in a way running off with a criminal, instead of the narration we have weird calls to their families, and replace meandering shots of nature with slow motion shots of bouncing ####. I can see why there is a big divide between critics and fans on this one, and for me it would be in the category of liking it, but probably wouldn't recommend it to many people. 6/10.

Oblivion

IMO, Tom Cruise is not all that good of an actor, but also I think his movies are typically entertaining and worth the watch. Oblivion goes along that line of reasoning, but is elevated by some of the best direction/visuals Ive ever seen (watch this in surround sound HD for sure), a solid script, and a timely soundtrack. Im not sure what my expectations were really for this, but I thought it was a fantastic sci-fi thriller pretty much all around. Highly would recommend.

Over the next 20-30 minutes, I thought maybe Im wrong. Shortly after, Cruise is indeed a clone who is a low-level servant expecting/looking forward to his release from his job and return home. Honestly, its hard to compare it to other movies because it reminded me of a couple, but that would spoil a new viewer.

Its definitely not "dumb fun" though. Its a very good sci-fi thriller, intelligent, and worth the watch.

Honestly, its hard to compare it to other movies because it reminded me of a couple, but that would spoil a new viewer.

Its definitely not "dumb fun" though. Its a very good sci-fi thriller, intelligent, and worth the watch.

Caught the Bruce Willis led 16 Blocks over the weekend when I couldn't sleep.

There were positives to the movie. Bruce did a good job of playing a drunk over the hill cop that somehow had the usual Bruce superpowers to evade and beat the entire NYPD. The head bad guy whose name escapes me but he always plays a cop in every movie or TV show he is in did hi usual decent job. And........

Yeah, that's it. Nothing special. Rather boring plot overall.

I almost rented this the other day and instead got Silver Linings. Can't remember who or where i heard it, but someone said this was the best movie of the die hard brand. Maybe it was in sarcasm. Siliver Linings was good. Wifey liked it more than me, but definetly better than alot of other crap out there.

Guns, Girls, and Gambling wasnt bad. Its only 90 minutes long, Christian Slater with his schtick in full force, some decent shootouts, and nice eye candy.

So is that still actually happening? Based on what I saw from Cohen in Hugo, Im fairly convinced he could do great things with this role.

Decent movie, but just not my type of humor I guess. I didn't love In Bruges as much as others either, but liked it more than this one. 5/10

Lawless:

I ended up having an odd combination of feelings about this one. Really liked a couple of the performances, especially Guy Pierce, and really loved how the movie looked. In the end, I think that is all that kept me going. Plot was straight forward and predictable, and the movie was dull. An OK rental, but don't expect much. 5/10

End of Watch:

Really dug this one. I thought the doc-style filming really helped with the tension, and spending so much time with the two main characters even as they are just sitting in the car talking #### helps you care for them that much more. Some of the scenarios they found themselves in were getting a little silly, but overall I really enjoyed it. One of the better action movies I've seen in a bit. 7/10

Too Big to Fail - One of the better movies based on the financial collapse. Lots of great performances by a huge range of well known actors. Loved Giammatti's subtle portrayal of Bernanke. So many players involved in this story that it gets a little confusing keeping track of who is who but it does a great job of capturing the emotions of the time. 3.5/5

Prometheus - Good, not great. So much of the movie has been done before that it's hardly an original idea but it was visually stunning and somewhat kept my interest throughout. Plenty of gripes but it was a fun ride. The underused Charlize Theron/old man storyline should have been left out, imo. 2.5/5

Last Days Here - Incredible documentary featuring a span of time in the life of Bobby Liebling, former singer for the obscure 70's metal band, Pentagram. Tough to watch at times, funny at others, it was a trainwreck that I couldn't look away from. I had a hard time feeling sympathetic for him throughout most of the movie but watching it proves that there really are some angels in this world. Highly recommend! 3.5/5

Duvall plays a preacher on the run after a violent conflict who seeks redemption in a small Louisiana town. While I think they overdid the length of some of the preaching scenes, especially at the end, it didn't really detract from the movie. Duvall at his best. 3/5

That was well done. I just found the monster stuff to be dull and cliche - whereas the sci fi stuff felt fresh and innovative.

For me, that was enough for Lawless to be one of my favorite films from last year. Granted, Im a sucker for period/historical dramas, and add in illegal activity & the mob and you have me sold, but this was strong in multiple areas. Guy Pearce and Tom Hardy both had award worthy performances that give it a lot of re-watchability, Ive watched it 3 or 4 times already. Dull is the last thing Id call it if for any reason because of the acting all around by the cast. Really my only complaint was it shouldve either used a lot more Gary Oldman, or not had his character in the script in the first place.

Its hard for me to rate it because I thought it was a great performance in an average at best film, but simply its worth watching just for Duvall's Oscar-nominated performance (and in retrospect I have no idea how Nicholson won it that year in As Good As It Gets over Duvall here).

Hard to say how many redeeming qualities Duvall has in The Apostle, but I thought the character had plenty of dimension. Being a preacher who ends up beating a man with a bat, nearly killing him, and trying to find forgiveness from god in the aftermath is fairly complex. Not to mention Duvall made it hard to know if he was scheming or honestly trying to do something for others quite often. The fact that he started a new church and gave people in the community transportation to it and the opportunity to pray, learn, ask for forgiveness, etc is a redeeming quality regardless of Duvall doing it more for himself than them, or whatever the case.

Duvall is a rare guy. Like Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, or Gene Hackman. Actors that are instantly believable the moment you see them on-screen, and they automatically improve any movie they appear in.

Guns Girls and Gambling was decent. Seemed like director was doing a Tarantino immitation of some sorts. Stupid funny, entertaining, and worthy of a watch imo. Lincoln Vampire was pretty weak, some cool things about it, but probably not worthy of a watch imo, unless just utterly bored. Surprised I made it to the end actually.

Love Duvall in everything I've ever seen him in.

I consider him to be the best actor I have seen during my lifetime.From THX1138 to Get Low the man has been a force. And while he definitely gets many accolades IMO he doesn't get the credit he truly deserves.

Duvall is a rare guy. Like Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, or Gene Hackman. Actors that are instantly believable the moment you see them on-screen, and they automatically improve any movie they appear in.

Not sure I'd lump Caine in there, hes had some clunkers, but otherwise agree

What did you think of Sixth Sense? They both were released the same year, and I thought Stir of Echoes was the much better film. I can see how maybe you were disappointed, but to think Stir of Echoes sucked? Im not seeing it. Its an above average supernatural thriller, especially based on whats considered average these days. It has solid acting, plenty of tension, and a twist or two that I dont see how anyone can really determine beforehand. I cant say the same about Sixth Sense, or many others in this genre.
