Big fan of this movie.October Sky 4.5 / 5. Been meaning to watch this for years and found it on Netflix. Gyllenhaal and Cooper were excellent in this. Not too smarmy and just the right touch of sentiment without over doing it.
I'm crossing my fingers that the After Erf boxoffice bust this just might happen. That little lintball destroyed The Day The Earth Stood Still remake. Always a bad sign when there's a character I'm supposed to be sympathetic towards that I want the aliens to kill first.Jaden Smith should never act again.
I haven't watched this since I was about 10 years old when it was on HBO. THAT scene scarred me for life.At this point I absolutely love the movie but it definitely took a few viewings for it to grow on me (although Lithgow made it watchable from the first viewing IMO, just a brilliant performance by him).Didn't much care for the book, I found none of Irving's characters to be really all that likable and I find that Irving tosses around progressive themes of adultery and abortion rather haphazardly and without much consideration for my taste. I get the feeling that he really doesn't have a high opinion of humanity in general.Garp is one of my favorite books of all time. And was really disappointed when I heard Robin Williams was going to be Garp. Did not like the movie at all first time I saw it. But it has grown on me It is a great readWorld According to Garp.
Is the book a lot better? The movie did not do much for me. Kind of all over the place. Had good reviews. Thought it was a movie I should see that came out a bit before my time.
A Prayer for Owen Meany is one of my favs. Should I read Garp? Simon Birch is nothing compared to the book is Garp the same way?
I have enjoyed The East and Disconnect.Hasn't been anything good out in months
I see two recent movies with the same name. Are you talking about the Jason Bateman one?Disconnect
One of the better movies I've seen in a while. Very powerful, well written and the acting was good.
I just finished it and could watch it again.
I thought the performances were more than adequate, particularly the Asian lead girl; though the main guy kind of sucked. Besides that I very much agree with your post, especially the film's need to be much more of a satire. I still enjoyed the film reasonably enough, it did manage to hold my attention throughout, but I wouldn't exactly recommend the film to anyone.did not care for "bling ring". very much a sofia film in a lot of ways. just not a good script and not strong performances. watson is given very little to do, for example. it needed to be much more a satire - buck henry should have been the fixer on this - but didn't go far enough. it's a pretty in moments but empty film. i say this a fan - mostly - of a lot of her work too.
Dreary movie, but still pretty well made.Snow White and the Huntsman - 7/10
Could have been a lot more (but the criticisms of Kristen Stewart are overblown) but the story was interesting and the sets looked really cool. Worth watching, IMO.
That was the part that could have been "more", e.g. going for broke on the Wicked Witch's evilness and the lengths the heroes were willing to go to to overcome it.Dreary movie, but still pretty well made.Snow White and the Huntsman - 7/10

Pretty much. She killed this movie. She can't act. She has one facial expression and I never believe the emotion she is supposed to be portraying. The criticisms of Kristen Stewart were not blown enough IMO.That was the part that could have been "more", e.g. going for broke on the Wicked Witch's evilness and the lengths the heroes were willing to go to to overcome it.Dreary movie, but still pretty well made.Snow White and the Huntsman - 7/10

She didn't wreck it as much as it's true that the part, and by extension the movie, would have been better if played by someone more capable.

Still can't believe it's a John Varvatos boutique now. I live pretty much around the corner and was surprised at how the place just sputtered out and died without as much fanfare as it deserved.Ooo I want to see this.Bourbon Cowboy said:CBGB

Saw and liked it more than a little when it came out in 3D. Not nearly as well as I enjoyed the first in this reboot, but really good nonetheless.Watched the latest Star Trek over the weekend- completely enjoyed it, likely in the same manner as just discussed with the zombie movies. Aside from Uhura, I think they did a great job with the casting.
I got the sense that this would have been pretty spectacular visually in 3d... anybody see it in the theaters?
I liked it as well. Don't get the trekkies that complain it was just an action flick when by far the two most popular of the original Star Trek movies were just action flicks. Don't get the complaints about it "ripping off" Wrath of Kahn either, as I really enjoyed their throwbacks/shoutouts to it.Watched the latest Star Trek over the weekend- completely enjoyed it, likely in the same manner as just discussed with the zombie movies. It's a shame it closed. Kind of a metaphor for the Punk genre, when you think about it.Still can't believe it's a John Varvatos boutique now. looking forward to the film
Saw it in the theater with my son. I liked it a lot, and am really surprised at some of the negative reviews. I don't watch 3-D films, so I can't vouch for that iteration.Watched the latest Star Trek over the weekend- completely enjoyed it, likely in the same manner as just discussed with the zombie movies. I'm not ashamed to say that I am a fanboy when it comes to the original series. That said, I think that some fans tend to really overthink and obsess over small details. I think the creaters of this reboot truly love Star Trek, and that informs their choices.I liked it as well. I have been watching Trek for almost as long as I can remember watching things on TV. I was about 6 the first time I saw it. It was so cool for TV back then. Anyway I say all that to say I have been a life long fan and I really like what they are doing with the films. I think the reboot was a tad better but these are both as good as any of the earlier films and better than most of them.I'm not ashamed to say that I am a fanboy when it comes to the original series. Weird - I did not Mind Uhura, but found Dr. McCoy distracting & annoying (the actor, not the character) . She was awful and doesn't belong on the same screen as Charlize Theron.
I liked the movie enough. It entertained me. I cannot stand Kristen Stewart, though. She seems to be a stupid human being and it is impossible for her to portray a bit of intelligence. This is her main deficit in acting in my opinion.Puhleeze. And when Theron "hams it up" it's safe to assume it is intentional.
Charlize Theron tore a stomach muscle while shooting a scene which required her to scream very loud.
Well to be fair this story line didn't revolve around that. She was a threat to the queens existence not her vanity. And really nothing wrong with hamming it up a bit. My only quibble with the cast (and it's not a big deal) is Spock. The actor does a good job. But he lacks that cool edge that Nimoy brought to the character. The new Spock is clearly capable and smart, but Nimoy was cooler.Bourbon Cowboy said:Weird - I did not Mind Uhura, but found Dr. McCoy distracting & annoying (the actor, not the character) . IIRC they stated (or heavily implied) that it was Snow Whites "virtue" or "purity" or something like that, not her beauty (no duh, amiright?), which may or may not have been part of the original story. Either way we have been taught since day one that Snow White was prettier than the Queen and that ticked the Queen off so for that reason I am calling Kristen Stewart as Snow White to Charlize Theron's Queen a huge fail.NCCommish said:Well to be fair this story line didn't revolve around that. That's just the difference in how they're choosing to portray Spock. Nimoy's Spock was more Vulcan where Quinto's is more human. My only quibble with the cast (and it's not a big deal) is Spock. I can see that but I thought it was hilarious, at least the first hour or so. It felt like a bunch of comedians sitting around talking but I love that stuff.KarmaPolice said:This is the End:

I guess to me it felt like a subpar celebrity roast mixed with a subpar horror/comedy. probably laughed at McBride the most, but he even got old quickly for me.I can see that but I thought it was hilarious, at least the first hour or so. Really? I turned it off after 15-20 minutes and I typically sit through even really bad films.Cold Dead Hands said:That's My Boy
I have not enjoyed a Sandler movie since Happy Gilmore. But I found this to be quite entertaining. I laughed a lot. It was silly but charming and Sandler seemed ok in it. Loved Vanilla Ice in this.
