The Wolverine

Great movie and I only found one really annoying thing in the movie - the unnecessarily long and ridiculous train fight. I never like fights on the top of trains so take it with a grain of salt.
I mostly enjoyed this, although the ending was a bit weak.

Hopefully I can save people from watching "The Counsellor" starring Brad Pitt and a host of others.Boring dialogue....basically boring everything. The kind of movie you sit there waiting to finally "kick in" but never does.
Just curious: could you cite a movie you think has interesting dialogue?
Pulp fiction is an obvious choice. There are a number of older movies like The Maltese Falcon that I could list. I'm a sucker for well written romance like Before Sunrise / Before Sunset. Just about any Coen Brothers or Woody movie. Glengarry Glen Ross. Lots of the early Kevin Smith stuff (if pressed I'd list Chasing Amy at the top). A Fish Called Wanda, The Sting, tombstone, The Princess Bride, Monty Python Holy Grail, My Cousin Vinny, heck even the Clooney Oceans 11 movie had some snappy dialogue.

The older stuff is where you'll find the best dialogue driven movies though.
I'm not surprised that people take issue with The Counselor. I'm just surprised that you don't like The Counselor and cite the reason as the script being boring because the script is fantastic.
I have the same problem with some of Mamet's stuff, in that it sounds like writing instead of people having a legitimate conversation.
I see why you'd say that. Movies are often so poorly written that I can forgive an overly mellifluous tone. Kinda like Deadwood. I don't really care if some of these guys could never have been so eloquent. I just want more.
I still want more "Deadwood". They need to make that happen now.

The good news is HBO cancelled Deadwood to make room for John From Cincinatti.

Cloud Atlas

Finally had the time to finish this mess. I think it's a good time to reflect on the failure that is the The Wachowskis' careers. The Matrix is one of my favorite movies - infinitely re-watchable. But every subsequent film has been worse and worse. Speed Racer is awful. The only reason to see Cloud Atlas is the sheer wonder at how goofy and ridiculous it is. One has to be impressed at the hours and hard work that went into Cloud Atlas. After all, this is a lot of effort for something so ultimately bad.

Funny how similar the Wachowskis' careers are to M Night Shyamalan.

Oh, and George Lucas.

Certainly.

Forgot to post that I watched a couple the other day:

Venus:

Fantastic and fearless performance by O'Toole. Overall the movie didn't click with me as much though - I think I was expecting more sweetness and less perv old man. 6/10

An Education:

This one I liked a lot better, and have liked Carey Mulligan in just about everything I have seen her in. Really loved the feel of the movie and Hornby's script and dialogue really shine through. 8/10

Psycho - 8/10

Another classic that I hadn't seen front to back and hadn't seen any of in years.

Anthony Perkins really is amazing in this movie. And lord do I love Hitchcock's women.

I didn't care for the way it ended. Otherwise a very good movie.

:goodposting:

For a guy with pretty clear mommy issues (Hitchcock, not AD), he sure as hell knew how to cast the hottest women.

Frances Ha

Was watching and it felt familiar. Director did "Kicking and Screaming," his debut in the 90's which I liked. Kind of has a following.

Most of the characters are annoying but the dialogue is often hilarious. Made me laugh and feel like a doosh at times hearing something I would say.

Streaming on Netflix. Definitely worth checking out.

6.5/10

Noah Baumbach?

I was a big fan of this version of Kicking and Screaming (not the soccer one)- funny writing and characters and I remember really liking his handling of flashbacks with a kind of stop-motion freeze frame method I hadn't seen before.

Alos liked his Mr Jealosy (not brilliant, but highly underrated, IMO) and Squid and the Whale... will definitely check this one out.

The middle episodes were brutally bad. I don't agree with hooter at all about the zombie movie remark. I would much rather watch movies like 28 Days Later, Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead, the remake Dawn of the Dead, etc... over this show. Judging from the other shows that AMC has brought to the table, I was excited for this and thought it was a huge wiff for them.
truly. it wasn't even a case of a project not living up to the hype. it just stunk.
I watched the first episode twice about a month ago and couldn't get into it at all. I gave it a try again Saturday morning and ended up watching the whole season in one sitting. Maybe it was just what I was looking for. Because I watched it all at once I didn't really get to think or reflect on it at all until it was done and I was satisfied. Also, those other zombie movies you listed are all in the 90+ percentile for me. We still get like a zombie movie a month that blows.
Just curious - what are you watching? Zombieland was the last one that I remember seeing, but I have gotten fairly good at steering clear of the B horror movies now. I keep picking up The Horde but haven't pulled the trigger on that one yet.
Just watched The Horde and it's a decent flick with lots of action.

These are 28 days later "fast" zombies. Building atmosphere reminded me a lot of "The Raid: Redemption".

Why does it take people FOREVER to figure out you have to shoot a zombie in the head to stop them. Ugh

Olympus Has Fallen: Well, at least it was better than Man of Steel.
I hate you.
 Just being honest.
OHF is the worst movie I've seen in theaters in probably 20 years. And I saw The Golden Compass.
Seriously? It was by no means good but it was on par with pretty much every other action movie from guys like Butler, Willis, Stateham, The Rock, etc.

No. It was really, really bad

So are lots of movies. I don't even remember it, and I saw it. If it was the worst movie in the last 20 years, I'd remember it.

Sure you're not thinking of White House Down?
The one with Jamie Foxx? What a disaster. The trailer looked like it jumped out of Kentucky Fried Movie or Tarantino's grind house films.

I didn't say it was the worst movie I'd seen in 20 years (although it's close). I said it was the worst movie I'd seen in a theater in 20 years.

I'm usually pretty successful in avoiding clunkers in the theater. I'll take more chances on rentals.

But between Olympus Has Fallen and the newest Die Hard, I whiffed twice this year.

So you're saying that it was terrible.

Compared to what? For its genre, it was average at worst. Compared to Man of Steel, it was awesome. Compared to Shawshank, it was horrific.

2014 contenders?

Drooling over here.
The Counselor, Gravity, Foxcatcher, Wolf of Wall Street all sound very good. The rest, not so much, even including most of the other possibilities listed at the bottom. The Coens one doesnt only sound boring it also looks boring but I'll of course see it anyway. I havent seen the 2 previous Before's though but I know theyre supposed to be good.
Really? I think they all sound at the very least interesting, if not really good. Though I agree, the only one that doesn't intrigue me at all is the Coen's one; the trailer for that looks really dumb.
Life story of whoever wrote Mary Poppins doesnt sound interesting at all unless there's something in her life that would make it so. The Alexander Payne one will in all likelihood be good (Really like all of his that Ive seen, though havent seen Descendents) but black and white is sort of a turn off for me, and I cant picture Will Forte as the star in his movie unless its a slapstick comedy.
Nebraska was a good movie, but personally painful to watch since it was like watching my relatives back in Iowa.

Most of the depictions were scarily spot on but Forte mother unrealistically used a lot of bad language. She wouldn't have been so blunt and said similar things without as much profanity.

I can understand those who thought Cloud Atlas was a mess, but I enjoyed it well enough.
I'm not saying it was worthless. But you have to admit it's one of the goofiest movies ever made.
It's been a while since I've seen it, but 'goofy' isn't really something that comes to mind when I think of Cloud Atlas. I guess I can see it with Tom Hanks as a very bizarre looking gangster and whatnot, but I'm much more willing to suspend my disbelief for a film like Cloud Atlas that's trying to do something different as opposed to the standard action/adventure flick, for example.

Did a lot of TV viewing and hit the movies once.....

The Dark Knight Rises. Very enjoyable. The Talia reveal at the end I knew was coming (this was the first time I have actually watched this one) and I liked Bane. No trouble at all understanding him as I have heard. Overall it was a solid end to the trilogy for me. Nothing really special. Did like the Scarecrow guy as the judge.

The Muppets. The new one that came out last year. Still awesome in many ways. Put it on for the kids and the adults ending up wathcing and laughing our arses off most of the time. Might not be the best movie ever made but for a Muppet Movie it hit everything it should have.

Snow White and the Huntsman. Wife liked it, which was very very surprising. Alhtough I think she has a thing for Thor, or whatever his name was in this one. Kristen can't act at all and I really just didn't like her or her character. I enjoyed the darkness of the story but overall it really just didn't do anything for me.

Free Birds. Went to theater because son wanted to see it (the previews, in his defense, were hysterical when we saw them). He enjoyed. I hated it. Aweful movie. The premise had a lot of potential. The entire movie was a snorfest. It was basically a drama - I don't know if that is what they were going for, but animated drama - not for me. Would not recommend at all unless you just know your kids would like it as mine did. Although, I am willing to get he has already forgotten about it.

Battleship. Hehe. They made this a movie. That's funny. I want to be in these meetings sometimes. And, I just want to commend Liam Neeson on taking capitalism by the short hairs and just making money for the sake of making money. Good on you. That whole being a good actor thing in everything you do is overrated. Follow DeNiro - get a paycheck.

Watched the Kings of Summer over the weekend. I found it to be an enjoyable, quirky, coming of age story that had some good laughs. Nothing unique or ground breaking, and fairly formulaic overall. Also they could have developd the characters a bit more, especially the relationships between the parents and the leads. Nonetheless, I'd recommend it.

So we watched Red 2 and RIPD last week. 2 wasn't as good as it predecessor IMO. And RIPD did seem like a bit of a MIB ripoff. With that said I thought both were entertaining. There was plenty of humor, the action wasn't bad and I liked the players.

2 Guns really tries to be a clever, witty, twisting and turning buddy cop flick. It fails at pretty much all of those things. Better than Man of Steel, but that isn't saying much.

haven't seen Red 2, but I thought RIPD was absolutely terrible and turned it off around 3/4 of the way through. Complete MIB rip off, imo, but one that made a lot less sense. The only thing good about it was Marisa Miller.

Well really Bridges saved the movie for me. Reynolds was awful. But Bridges chewing up the scenery was very entertaining.

Just watched this. I think the problem was that, after the second twist in the first 20/30 minutes, it kind of gave away that the whole movie was going to be nothing but twists.

And I don't think Bill Paxton realized what kind of movie he was supposed to be acting in.

Watched a bunch of stuff last week with the wife out of town...

House of Cards (series) - B+ - really good for the most part, but the plot seemed ridiculous by the end. Spacey and Penn are excellent. Worth the 13 hours to binge watch.

World War Z - B - Entertaining but I didm;t think it was as good as I Am Legend. Worth the $1 rental

Star Wars - Into Darkness - B - Worth a dollar, not as gppd as the first one.

Pacific Rim - C - Really wanted to like this, but it is slow and plodding and kind of annoying.

Catch Me if you can - B - Worth a dollar. Starts off pretty cool with regard to magic but then turns in to this light-philosophical thing which is stupid. It's pretty predictable as well, but fun.

The Place Beyond the Pines - A - Probably one of the two or three best movies I've seen this year (but I don't see many). Really liked it, left me thinking for a while. And AJ is one of the least likable movie characters in a long time.

Haven't seen a movie in a long time but was able to catch a few over the break.

Elysium - 6.5/10 - I give it a boost for being an original idea. The futuristic slum setting reminded me of Running Man. I also liked Jodi Foster as the antagonist. I also liked the Australian mercenary bad guy. Overall there wasn't much there as far as depth, and making you think, but it was entertaining.

World War Z - 7/10 - I'm not usually huge fan of Zombie movies but I liked this one. They actually made the concept of a zombie epidemic seem plausible. I could have done without the cheesy parts focusing on Brad Pitt and his family, but they seem to work that crap into all major flicks.
