Saw the Spectacular Now recently. Very solid coming of age movie, but only flaw was the

Spoiler

"big event that wasnt" near the end of the film. Had they had her die like they made the audience initially feel, and have the main lead suffer the consequences of his drinking causing that loss of life, it could have been an epic ending to a solid movie. Instead it just become another one of those movies that was solid but not spectacular.

 

[On The Rocks]

"The Way, Way Back" may not have been the best movie of the year, but it was my favorite.

If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

Add: "20 Feet From Stardom" was by far my favorite documentary.

American Splendor with Paul Giamatti was pretty decent although with the real Pekar sprinkled in throughout the movie, you can see that Giamatti played him too nice. He really does seem like more of a doosh than he's portrayed. Giamatti is just a special actor though. Not many actors can become the character like he does. 2.5/5

Bale really becomes his character in this. Superb. Never been an A. Adams fan but she jumps off the screen in this as well. Renner and Lawrence not so much. They both seemed a bit "young" for their characters.

Leo in WOWS and Bale here are both despicable characters. But unlike Leo in WOWS, I cared about Bale's character and where he was headed.

Overall, home run performances from Bale and Adams in an entertaining flick.

That "Live and Let Die" scene was a movie jolter. She's an excellent actress to be sure, but it just seemed like she knew the performances going on around her were top shelf, so she decided to do some "acting!!!" to keep up. Jar Jar ref is anything that pulls you out of being engrossed in a movie. You're watching, you're liking, then BAM on comes Jar Jar to take you out of the good time you're having.

But again, like the give and take we have here between you and I, ultimately I think how you feel about Lawrence's performance will dictate how you feel about the film as a whole.

Anybody seen Kick A.S.S. 2?

It's not a compete trainwreck but I thought it missed the mark.

I'm probably going to grab this off Amazon and watch it today. I really liked the first one and thought Hit Girl really stole that movie. I'm a little apprehensive of Jim Carrey only because I think he is a huge dooshnozzle.

it was just ok. carrey is hardly in the movie. problem is, they also seemed to push hit girl to the sidelines too.

Yeah, it's like they thought the first one was popular because of the dude playing kick ###. Big mistake. I would have watched (and prefered) a hit girl movie.

Walter Mitty was a rental or airplane movie. I enjoyed it ultimately, but had really low expectations.

Lawrence's performance was an after-thought and ultimately silly but I still really liked the flick. She looked like a kid playing dress up. She's a terrific actress just miscast here.

Yes Crumb is really good. It's a straight documentary, with no fictional drama. As weird as Robert Crumb is, and he's really weird, he's the most normal person in his family by a mile, pretty interesting to see.

Crumb is disturbing and absolutely worth seeing.

Just saw "Saving Mr. Banks", the movie about Walt Disney bringing P.L. Travers story of Mary Poppins to the screen. Recommended, but it can be a tough watch at times, as we learn of the reasons why Mrs. Travers had such a difficult time letting go of the book rights. Nice touch that they had pictures of the real people involved during the credits (along with some audio of Mrs. Travers). Hanks is fine as Disney, but Emma Thompson should be on the Oscar list.

Saw Lone Survivor- thought it would be an emotionally draining movie since its based on a real life military tragedy, but this movie just didnt have the emotional punch that it was looking for. Felt like a simple military action movie that was decent but far from spectacular.

Only reason Berg directed Battleship was if the studio let him shoot this movie. It's his personal project and I can't wait to see it. Wife and I are doing a Lone Survivor/Dallas Buyers Club movie night tomorrow at our house with a few friends. Looking forward to both.

The Internship and We're the Millers:

Both perfectly average comedies. On par with a lot of comedies that I watch lately - I laughed a few times, but thought they dragged a little bit. Rarely does a comedy have the plot to keep me engaged past 90 mins. Would say that Millers is slightly better. Both 5/10

The UP series:

Watched the first couple installments, and I really hope they start getting better. Couple things that the kids said were kinda funny and it interesting to see them change, but I am assuming that it gets a lot more interesting when they reach adulthood. These were way too much like something I would have been forced to watch at school. I do love the forboding music at the end when the interviewers says something like: "and this is a glimpse into the future of England" Will hold off judgement for later installments.

Searching for Sugar Man:

As good as advertised. Highly recommended. 8/10

We Steal Secrets:

Another decent doc., but for my liking focused a little too much on Assange and could have maybe concentrated more on right/wrong of what they are doing. 6/10

Centers around a couple of friends who work at a brewery together and spend a lot of the day hanging out of flirting and how that spills into their relationships with their significant others. Not the best movie, but you could do a lot worse in this genre. 7/10

Prince Avalance:

Odd little movie with Paul Rudd and Emile Hircsh (sp?). Still deciding if I liked it because it was good, or it was just odd enough that I liked it just because it was something different.

Popped in Rocky Balboa last night for the first time in a long while. I just felt like a Rocky movie last night (other than Rocky V which I would never voluntarily put in my blue ray player....ever) and I never watched this one with my wife. She loved it.

I know we are not talking about oscar worthy stuff, nor incredible film making here. But Sly did a great job with this the last movie in the beloved series. I rank it 3rd best overall in the series. The flick had a ton of heart and soul. I always loved Rocky since I saw it back in the 70's in the theater with my parents. I remember going to Rocky II at 9 years old with my uncle. The theater was packed....not a seat available. The crowd was roaring during the final fight with Creed. Those were good times.

I can understand why people would be down on 2 since it's nearly the same story as 1 but for me they are essentially one movie and should be ranked together.

just watched "Bronson" with tom hardy. directed by the same guy that did the ryan gosling trilogy, jan bran redfern or whatever. this movie is just terrific for about 80 minutes before it runs out of steam. but oh! for those 80 minutes! it is glorious, giddy and funny. tom hardy is the movie and delivers in a big way. it's "a clockwork orange" meets terry gilliam in a weird way. i lovedlovedloved this mostly for what hardy did with the part but jan nikita koloff directed the hell out of this movie. i can forgive 10 minutes where it just needed to end somehow.

Watched this very recently. I didn't much care for it but whatever. It wasn't awful. He's a jerk and she's naive but they're both desperate so it's ok. It reminded me a bit of Woody Allen's "Manhattan" with a change of locale and not nearly as funny. Noah has grown on me, as has Gerwig. I was surprised how much I liked Frances Ha.

Greenberg

Loved this movie. Stiller's character is on the autism spectrum and therefore is very unlikeable at times. But Greta Gerwig is nothing less than a revelation here. Fantastic actress. Overall, the movie will appeal to indy film fans. Very offbeat and unusual.

Agreed. I like it when guys like Stiller take departures from their normal shtick and Greenberg definitely worked for me.

Yeah, Greenberg and Permanent Midnight are pretty darn good. I don't much care for Stiller's comedies. Loved his old FOX TV show.

Not like Stiller hasnt made his share of bad or not funny comedies, but come one now. Theres Something About Mary? Meet The Parents? Flirting With Disaster? Zoolander?

Zoolander and Meet The Parents are terrible. Mary is decent. I did like Flirting With Disaster.

Agree about Zoolander and MtP but Something About Mary is freaking hysterical.
