Nebraska - A little slow but quirky and fun. I really hope June Squibb takes the Oscar tonight she was absolutely delightful and completely carried the film.

She was robbed. Fantastic performance.

Haven't seen Nebraska but Im surprised the 12 Years A Slave girl was even nominated let alone won BSA. Yeah, she was good, but I never thought whoa, this is an amazing performance, who is this girl.

If we're giving Oscars to no-name African actors, I think Barkhad Abdi shouldve won over Leto, and I really liked Leto in DBC.

I won't go so far as to say Squibb was robbed but I was disappointed.

Lupito Nyong'o earned her Oscar and Sally Hawkins gave excellent performance as well in Blue Jasmine. It was a strong field for best supporting actress.

Barkhad Abdi was quite good but nowhere near the caliber of performance Leto gave in DBC. I think Leto's win was a mortal lock.

How? By getting raped and whipped in 12YAS she earned an Oscar? I just watched it on thursday and thought pretty much everything about it was very good but not great, and really her performance wasnt something that stoodout to me when I put the film in that context either.

I thought Abdi carried Captain Phillips on his back and without him I dont think that film is near as good or suspenseful or even considered to be a Best Picture nominee. With as good as Leto's performance was, I cant say the same about him.

We're clearly not going to agree on Nyong'o but I thought everything about the way she carried herself in the film was top notch.

Abdi was very good but I don't think his role was nearly as challenging as what Leto did for DBC, and I am not talking about the weight loss.

Well thats kind of obvious, but Leto seems a bit fem to me to begin to with so probably not as challenging as some other actors doing that role.

ETA: and it wasnt that Abdi's role was challenging, to me his screen presence was just tremendous and it didnt feel like he was "acting" at all.

Agree that Abdi was great to watch. He definitely felt authentic in the role.

Captain Philips is another one that I was surprised got nominated for best picture.

Hunger Games: Catching Fire

You could tell that they upped the budget a bit. It really did everything a sequel (I know, it's part of a trilogy) sets out to do - more of everything. It was better than the first, and I enjoyed it quite a bit, but after about 30 mins it really is a repeat of the first movie with the tension and stakes ramped up. Thought the same thing when I read the book, so it really is the fault of the source material. 7/10

I really liked the austere beauty of Nebraska's black and white cinematography and the score.

The skin tones and sky didn't look photorealistic (maybe because of that I didn't recognize Will Forte, Breaking Bad's Saul and Stacy Keach immediately - I only knew Bruce Dern was in it beforehand), so I assume they put in a sepia tint with a filter or in post, which gave it a kind of aged Americana look and feel (same with the small town location shooting).

She maxed out her role. Basically universal rave reviews. Chiwetel Ejiofor? Not so much. He and Lupito both playing slaves. She "stretched" herself and became Patsey whereas Ejiofor just did an adequate job. It's the Solomon Northrup story and it wins best picture while the story is the supporting actress. Nuff said.

I thought Lawrence delivered a fine performance my problem was the fact that her character was pretty much entirely useless in the scope of the film and existed for the sole purpose of advancing one, poorly executed IMO, plot element.

I vaguely remember this one but nothing specific. I do, however, remember Leviathan which IIRC is pretty much the same film (Peter Weller, Richard Crenna, Ernie Hudsonand I kind of enjoyed that one although I am sure it would be terrible today.

I don't think the logic of the Academy awards makes for a very good point of evidence; they may as well be throwing darts at a board for how they give out these things yet alone nominations. Historically they give these actor/actress awards as if they were rewarded for 'most acting' instead of 'best acting', and these 2014 awards were another example of that.

Watched this last night. I was pretty well poop faced by the time I started watching it, and had low expectations, and found it to be slightly better than what I expected. 2/5, maybe a little better.

Either way, Vince Vaughn has been mailing it in since Wedding Crashers, a la Jim Carrey - in his comedies that is - since Me, Myself & Irene. I mean seriously, look at what Vaughn has done since then - The Break Up, Fred Claus, Four Christmases, Couples Retreat, The Dilemma, The Watch, The Internship, Delivery Man. Sadly Ive seen all but 1 of these, and none of them are better than average with stuff like Fred Claus, 4 Xmas just being flat out awful.

Yeah, Id say The Watch and The Dilemma were the 2 best of the bunch listed above, but I still wouldnt say they were better than average.

Agree - was really disappointed in this one. It was messy, but a lot of it might have to do with his wife not being able to act. She was part of an ensemble and better looking his his other 4 movies.

Saw a doc called The Summit about tragedy during a busy day of summit attempts on K2. Very interesting story that I remember only from the news headlines at the time, but the movie was a bit disjointed, suffering from poor narrative organization and editing (and not getting everybody involved to talk). There's a fair bit of jumping back and forth in time and the movie seems to set up one guy as a focal point, building towards an explanation that happens so quickly and confusingly, that it was a real distraction, almost ruining my enjoyment of the movie.

I read the book and thought it had a lot of slow parts in the first half but the film did a good job of editing and it moved very fast.

Clearly, she forgot that Redford slaughters practically every animal from A-Z. The weird part of Jeremiah Johnson is it's really one of the darkest films I've ever seen. But it sure has the patina of a family film. On one hand, there are four or five songs written and performed for the movie that are fairly saccharine. On the other hand, Robert Redford wipes out the entire Crow Native American population. Oh, and lots of women and children get killed. Like a bunch.

Did I mention that this is some dark ####?

Good movie.

This is a great dark film that flies completely under the radar. And yes I think some people think it's Redford ala Gentle Ben. Surprise!

Watched Thor Dark World and Machete 2 this weekend. You know the Machete thing was fun the first time. Over the top but at least a little grounded. This time it was just ridiculous. I mean seriously ridiculous. And on top of that no good nudity.Look a movie like this needs some gratuitous nudity. Without it then you start to pay attention to the plot. That's never good. Let's just say 3 will have to be free.

Thor I thought was pretty good. I wasn't a huge Thor guy during my comic days so I am not sure if they messed with canon a bit or not. Still a nice follow up to the original, some good action and again Loki steals almost every scene. Get this guy some more movies already.

You are probably right. This was actually a decent hit for Redford. In 1972 dollars it made 41 million which was good box office back then. It was really dark for a 9 year old but that's what happens when you let kids loose at the drive in.

Hard Eight:

Finally got around to catching up with PTA's first effort. VERY impressive movie for the first time behind the camera. I don't think the performances were quite as good as in his other movies, but you can still see the talent. Really liked the quietness, pacing of the movie, and character development. As far as old dudes that solve problems in movies that came out around the same time (I know, so many of them, right?) Sydney >>>>>>> The Wolf. Also loved seeing a long haired PSH at the craps table. Punch Drunk Love is a very polarizing movie, but I would say that PTA has not had a stinker yet. 7.5/10. (might be an 8, but can't think of the other movies that came out that year off the top of my head)
