Watched "Battle Royale." Pretty good, violent flick about students that are forced into deadly combat vs. each other. Lovers of Asian extreme cinema may dig this one.
I liked the movie, Kitano plays the teacher very well (but I like most films he is in anyway). IMO the film must be cathegoriced as comedy, not drama, everything else would be just stupid.
Enjoyed this one a lot. Speaking of Kitano, has anyone here seen Outrage? It's on netflix streaming and i would like to know if it's worth the time...

The Lorax - 0/10

Anti-business, environmental claptrap. Never has a movie made a bigger (and worse) about face than this. I was shocked.
having read the book pretty recently with my 2 1/2 year old, it's clearly anti-business. i think the any environmental message is coached in more anti-consumption though. it's pretty obvious like that.it's only "meh" to read aloud. i really like marvin k. mooney, will you please go now? to read to my boy.
Heh this is also on netflix, was wondering whether my kid would enjoy it after reading the book... Seems like the OP wasn't familiar with the source material.

I love the book and thought the movie was a travesty.

300: Rise of an Empire

I had low expectations. But I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. Some will say it's just a duplicate of the original. The 300 sequel adds to the drama of the first movie with some incredible ship battles. In fact, I say the hand-to-hand combat scenes at sea are some of the best choreographed you'll see. So to summarize, I recommend the movie to action fans despite the inevitable poor reviews.
It exceeded my expectations as well. The effects don't seem quite as impressive the second time around but I thought this was every bit as good as the original.

I assume the homo-eroticism goes to 11 in this one too?
Of course. But all that's in the eye of the beholder.

The Long Kiss Goodnight

Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson star in this action thriller about a CIA agent with amnesia. This must be the 10th time I've seen Goodnight, and I can't heap enough praise on this mess. I love it. A completely insane movie. There are scenes here that'll make you laugh out loud from the sheer silliness. The very definition of a guilty pleasure.
I think it's one of the all-time great female action movies.
I love this movie.
I think one reason it's so entertaining is it simultaneously satirizes thrillers while pledging loyalty to them.

Criminally underrated action movie.
Yes. The mark of a good thriller is the replay living up to the first viewing, and Goodnight is almost better the 10th time than it is the first.

Wolf of Wall Street:

Unfortunately it was exactly what I expected, which means I didn't enjoy it at all. I know a lot of it was my built in Scorsese bias. Still can't wrap my head around why such talented director needs to use the god awful voiceover time and time again. This one was also in serious need of editing too - there is not enough going on to carry 3 hours. Aside from that, I think it had a little Blue Jasmine syndrome going for it - I can definitely see the talent on screen, but I didn't want to spend more than a couple minutes with these people. All in all, it was a pretty brutal movie watching experience for me, just not a movie made for me at all.

Metallica: Through the Never

Again, I bring bias to the table even before I put this one in- really want to punch Lars in his chubby, smarmy face. The bad of this is that it comes off as a huge ego stroker, and the "story" interlaced in between the songs is pretty stupid. The good of this is that I can't deny they put on a great looking show. Fun to hear a lot of classics rolled out - in fact, I am not sure they played anything besides Fuel post-Black album. I don't think this is a great concert film, but it is a decent entry for fans of them.

Especially since they didn't play anything new, I spent a good amount of time thinking about their output of the last 20 compared to their contemporaries, and how the other bands of the day seemed to pull of their late careers so much better. For my money, damn near every other band from the day has managed to put out better records in the last decade - everybody from Megadeth to Iron Maiden to Slayer to "lesser" bands like Exodus and Testament. I think the only one that fell off as much as Metallica is Anthrax. Digression over...

White House Down

Perhaps one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I had low expectations for it, and it delivered exactly that. Possibly worse.

Big Metallica fan but I would only recommend seeing the movie when it first came out, on a big screen and in 3D...the way intended it to be watched.

I did wonder how much of a difference it made. I am as anti-3D as they come though and wasn't willing to give that band my money to find out.

Captain Philips: really good. Hanks is awesome.
Watched Captain Philips last night and enjoyed it more than I expected to. I was going to wait for HBO since I really wasn't that interested in it. Lots of tension throughout and Hanks puts on a great performance, especially when he's being examined at the end by the military doctor. I remember reading that the real life captain wasn't nearly as cautious as Hanks plays him. I just can't believe they aren't allowed to have some kind of weapons on board. 4/5

How many of these are there? About a baker's dozen?

I thought Barkhad Abdi who played the main Somali villain stole pretty much all the scenes from Hanks.

Enjoyable film but even while watching it I kept wondering where the Best Picture Nomination stuff was happening. Seemed like pretty standard fare. Without Barkhad Abdi that film would have been mediocre at best. Leto still totally deserved the Oscar but Abdi was tremendous.

Unfortunately I question if his career will have much longevity as a front line supporting actor (and I doubt he will get many lead actor opportunities) because his looks are so distinctive. I think he may have a niche as a modern day Al Leong (nobody knows his name but everyone would recognize him) but because his look is so unusual it will be hard to find a lot of front line supporting actor roles.

I thought Capt. Phillips was well done all around, but I agree without Abdi its much closer to being an average thrilling drama. Yeah, I would also agree with your assessment on Abdi's potential for roles. CP was a perfect role. It will probably be difficult for him to be offerred opportunities to have even close to that amount of screen time.

He just got a role in a Judd Apatow movie so hopefully things get better. I can imagine what his friends and family thought when he decided to move to L.A. to become an actor.

I am not sure things can get much better than an Oscar nom in your first role. I am just wondering if he is sustainable as a front line guy. I am very intrigued to see what Apatow does with him

I think of him in a similar way as I think of the girl from Precious- good actors who are physically sooooo distinct, it will be tough to separate them from their originating role. That said- the girl has booked some other work, so hopefully he can too (beyond Apatow)

Hunger Games Catching Fire...

Yeah I figured why not since I just saw the first one. I can dig these for the most part. I can't decide my feelings on Jennifer Lawrence though.

Well, I'm baised as a big fan...plus my boy has turned into a big fan. I've taken him to see them once and for 14 bucks to see the movie, in 3D, it was pretty damm cool. Now, it's been along time since I last seem a 3D movie...I think the last one was Jaws, but Through the Never was pretty close to being there as far as the concert went. I agree the story was a little cheesy, but at lest the effects were good. I don't agree with the ego stroking part. metallica's part in in was pretty much entirely them performing...seemed to me it was something they could do, hadn't done before, so they took a stab at it. I do think they shot themselves in the foot releasing it so right before Gravity came out...that took some 3D viewers out of the mix...I'm sure not many as they might not share much the same audience. Could be wrong, but it seems like your mind was made up prior.

One thing that was cool for me personally, is I've seen them live over 50 times and never have seen them perform Hit the Lights live...which was included in Through the Never. :headbang:

Watched Oldboy with Josh Brolin and Samuel L. Jackson. Pretty ####ed up movie.
Did you see the original?

I only saw it about a month ago for the first time. I'm not sure if I need to see the remake unless someone who loves the original also loves this one.
I have not seen the original, and didn't know this was a remake.

I probably won't seek out the original.

It came out from Hollywood recently, right?

That's how you know it is a remake.

In other Hollywood news, I can't wait to see Brick Mansions. I did, however, like it better the first time I saw it, when it was called District B-14.

I'm tired of that refrain.

jamny just put up a list of 50 films that are not remakes or reboots.

House of Cards - Season 2

Haven't finished the season yet, but I'm really happy that I stuck with this show. I was annoyed by Kevin Spacey's accent and by his speaking to the camera. But the show really upped the drama for season 2. More characters, and I assume a larger budget.

I am very happy I stuck with it too. They really turned it up a notch and addressed a lot of my concerns from season 1. Particularly as it relates to Kate Mara :jawdrop:

Yeah no kidding.

I can scarcely remember being so shocked and horrified by a scene in a TV show. Closest thing I can equate it to was when Ralphie beat that stripper to death in The Sopranos.
I remember your beef with season one, and they definitely made an effort to write in a bunch of new characters and sub-plots.

Yup.

Not sure how far in you to season two but the point they really seem to be driving home is

The path of destruction they are leaving in their wake.
No plot spoilers in there, but it took me until a specific episode to realize that was a major theme.

Bad Santa

Watched this for the first time in years. Still arguably the funniest movie ever made. Not the best comedy ever, but funniest, yes.

A Good Day to Die Hard

Well I decided to do the dishes and clip my dogs toenails while watching it...and now I'm posting in here (about an hour in) so there's that.

ETA: wow that was all kinds of incomprehensible and really not awesome but I'm kinda drunk so I'll say it was awesome.

Gonna crack another bottle of wine and start Oz The Great and Powerful, that's sure to be a winner...right?
