such a hit or miss movie with people, but I laughed quite a bit. didn't find it funny at all?

The scene with Melissa Mccarthy in the principal office was hysterical.

agree with the 2nd part, but have thought that about all of apatow's movies.

Haven't been here in a while, but here are the ones I enjoyed the most over the last few months (excluding blockbusters):

I enjoyed Chef, but it was pretty cliche.

My wife dragged me to it. She liked it a lot more than I did and it seemed forced in a lot of places. Still, not a bad movie.

I really did not like the first half of the movie at the restaurant. Both Dustin Hoffman and Scarlett Johnanssen were wasted in their parts. Plus it made no sense.

But the second half, after they met RDJ and got the food truck, that was an enjoyable movie. lots of fun their trek back to California. And the video made me

Told my wife after the movie that it reeked of Jon Favreau knowing a lot of people in Hollywood more than "These actors would be great for the parts".

Edit: Hoffman was too nice of a guy to pull off that part and I didn't understand his character at all.

Another thing that is starting to bother me with Apatow's movies is that he is acquiring Will Smith syndrome. He insists on cramming his wife (Leslie Mann) and kids down every ones throat now in every movie.

I can't remember if I posted these reviews, so I'll just comment on them again. I saw two recently that really epitomize what I like in movies. They're interesting, mature, and written for adults without a lot of gimmicks.

Cyrus

Jonah Hill, John C Reilly, and Marissa Tomei star in this funky movie. I don't want to reveal any spoilers, but the movie is very good. See it.

Enough Said

Gandolfini is awesome in his final performance, as are Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Catherine Keener. Highly recommended.

Liked them both. Cyrus a little more.

Same here. Although Gandolfini sure was an incredibly natural actor.

Enough Said was really good. It was sad to watch though.

I liked the movie also, but the subplots with both their Dad's seemed to really drag the movie down. Get rid of them or at least dial the drama back a notch and you have a much funnier/cleaner movie.

For me it was the opposite. I couldn't relate at all and hated the main characters. I couldn't find any humor in people who talk to each other and treat each other like that. So annoying.

Bad Words:

I really liked this one. Thought Bateman was great in it.. Not hard to figure out what was going on or his motivations, but so many great scenes made it well worth the trip for me. I think I had tears from laughing within the first 15 mins. Definitely need to be a fan of darker/uncomfortable/crass movies. Even more wrong than the adult/kid relationship in Role Models, but sweeter on a level too. 7.5/10

It actually took me a little to get into it but it was overall very good and got better as it went along. Hard to pull off a movie like that and still have a lot of heart, which it did. 3/5

It's a dumb movie made by a dumb director for his actress wife. it kind of embodies many of the worst tropes of 90's action filmmaking. think a poor man's michael bay and you have renny harlin.

Caught most of Gravity again this weekend as well. I enjoy it. Definately an IMAX movie though. And the visuals of being born and all that stuff were well done yet massively obvious.

I thought it was mainly a comedy, not serious action movie. Been a long time since I've seen it so I'll watch it again.

Well that would make more sense but it's listed as: Action & Adventure, Action Thrillers, Crime Action, Suspense. Like I said, if people enjoy it because it's fun to goof on, then ok. But I got the sense that people enjoyed it as a serious action flick.

i think it is a fun movie because it is so dumb. SamJax steals the show in pretty much every scene he's in.

I'm in the target age group and thought it was awful. Forced jokes and characters I had a hard time sympathizing with. I'm sure I posted earlier, but it was one of Apatow's weaker efforts. Sure it was better than The Internship because that movie was a giant steaming pile of crap.

On This is 40. I just didn't find most of it funny and too manny characters and scenese seemed really unnecessary. Him riding his bike at the end just seemed useless. The crazy pill popper could have been used so much better since they used Megan Fox so much. John Lithgow was wasted. So was Nemo's dad for the most part although at least with him I could understand the "realism" of him just being a moocher and not being any more in depth than that. But while I am in that age bracket and frankly that couple could have been me and my wife sans the passive agreesive BS, none of it related that much if at all. I will admit I have spent too much time in the bathroom just because it is a quiet place but that could have been funnier.

I don't know. just didn't do it for me.

However, War Games last night.... even the wife was entertained with some 80's nostalgia. Floppy disks in lock drives; pre AOL sounding phone connections for the computer; Joshua's voice; Dabney Coleman; Matthew Broderick looking 12 and acting like it. Just a classic great movie. And watching it I'd say at least 50% of the people with speaking parts are known faces even if they are just or were character actors - it's a pretty amazing cast from that view.

The 100 ft. Journey - 3.3/5 - I've seen three chef movies this month; this one, Le Chef (french) and Chef (US). All were decent. NOne challenged any new ground in movie-making or in the culinary world, but I enjoyed them all. Imo, there really wasn;t a dime's worth of difference between them, but I'm glad I saw them all.

Earth to Echo - 3/5 - I was not the intended audience, but I thought it was pretty good. Decent $2 matinee fodder

Its been a couple months since I saw it but A Million Ways to Die in the West was the worst movie I've seen this year., Hideous. I left in disgust in less than an hour. It made This Is 40 seem oscar-worthy

I saw it with a packed audience and enjoyed it.

But you know how that goes: comedies in a large group always seems funnier.

Bad Words 1.9/5 - I did laugh aloud a few times and love his attorney, but its a really miserable movie.

Saw this over the weekend. My wife who can't stand unnecessary profanity in a movie got up and left the room 5 minutes in.

I laughed out loud several times, loved the attorney also......and hated the whole why he was in the spelling bee story line. I just didn't care about what happened next.

However....it had enough laughs that I don't regret taking the time to watch.

caught "Calvary" over the weekend. it's a thoughtful kind of film with Brendan Gleeson playing an Irish priest. it's littered with comic moments but i would not call it a comedy. good film and with really good acting.

I don't know a thing about that movie, but I always enjoy Brendan Gleeson so I saved it to my queue.

I liked it for the most part. I would probably give it a solid 7/10, but that is mostly based on the performances. Other than that it was a standard revenge flick that has been done to death, and I didn't really understand a couple of the character's motivations.

I didn't enjoy my experience with this one at all. For sure an important film as far as the topic of race relations is concerned, especially for the time it was released, but Spike Lee's style and one dimensional characters made it really hard for me to take this movie too seriously. From the opening credits (I won't lie, is was expecting Fire Marshall Bill or the Head Detective to come out after the credits), it felt more like a series of skits or a play than a coherent movie. It honestly took a bit of willpower to not hit the FF button or eject this one. Maybe I missed something, but I am not understanding the near universal praise this movie seems to get.

Yeah, I've seen it a couple times before, but last night I watched it with the wife. She doesn't care much about movies, so it's a good sign that at the end of the movie she asked what the title was and said it was good. Usually all I get was "it was Ok" out of her, so that was as close to a rave review I might get out of her.

From the opening credits (I won't lie, is was expecting Fire Marshall Bill or the Head Detective to come out after the credits), it felt more like a series of skits or a play than a coherent movie. It honestly took a bit of willpower to not hit the FF button or eject this one. Maybe I missed something, but I am not understanding the near universal praise this movie seems to get.

i think context is key here. it's a flawed film, for sure, as many of the characters are thinly written. more achetypes than real people. it is also episodic, as you mentioned, rather the flowing narrative. that said, it's a potent film that is full of life and full of audacious choices. it may feel dated (i haven't seen it in some years) but it's no less topical now than it was 25 years ago.

i like Lee more than most here probably. he's made some just terrific movies (X, Clockers, and Mo Better Blues are among my favorites) and he's made a slew of just terrible and indulgent films. i don't think i have seen any of his new films that he's done in maybe 10 years, honestly.

I love Lee's use of color and framing, and when my mood is right can get behind the flat-stereotypes he floats out there as characters. In those moments, the characters are less about characters and more devices to tell/preach a story. But at it's worst- and it's a very fine line for me- the preachy paper-thin stereotypes get waaaaay too soap-boxey and dull that no amount of nice color or framing can fix.

i think it's interesting to see how he progressed as a director. i like that he's doing more conventional projects like "old boy" and "inside man" because he's benefited from the constraints of the genre. "clockers" is a really good example of how he could adapt and play to his strengths. some of his worst films are bad because they are so personal and ultimately indulgent.
