"st vincent" with bill murray, melissa mccarthy, chris o'dowd and naomi watts.

it was only okay. it had its moments and was a generally pleasant. they kind of start the movie one way and decide to dispense with it about midway through. huge plot holes really. performances are all over place too.

The Admiral: Roaring Currents

Went to the Korean theatre in LA to see this (CVG).

May be the best naval battle scenes recorded on film. Strong rival to Master and Commander.

Much like Fury, an excellent film for those waniitng to see epic military battles on the big screen, without that much of a need for character development, story arc, yada yada yada

4/5 stars for men

Snowpiercer - B

Somewhat reminded me of Land of the Dead in how bad the class system was.

Tilda Swinton was fantastic as was Allison Pill's cameo as the Teacher.

The movie dragged after they were gone.

Worth watching, glad I got to watch it on Netflix
Ha, just watched this a couple days ago.

Weird movie. So many things just didnt make sense and were silly, but it was pretty entertaining.

12 Years a Slave - Solid, disturbing at times, but not Best Picture caliber imo. I would have liked to have seen more of Solomon before and after in the North to give a little more insight into his character. Acting was mostly good all around except for some of the Shakespearean dialogue, especially the woman who was separated from her kids. I had an issue with that in Deadwood too but maybe that's how they spoke. And Brad Pitt was more a distraction than a plus. Nothing against his performance, but I would rather have seen an unknown to keep me in the movie. Too many long shots too, like the noose scene, that could have been cut down. 3/5

Not that I disagree with your take, but was curious - what would have been your Best Picture of last year?

X-Men: Day of Future Past:

Thought this one was good, but I didn't get into it like I did the first 2 of the older movies and the first of this series. I am sure some of it was the way the CG was, especially in the future, but something with the rest just felt a tad bloated as well. Still worth a watch, but didn't think it rose to the level of the others. 5.5/10

Saw this yesterday. Seemed to be a lot of people on a short train. Hated the ending. I found it to be a bit too goofy to enjoy.

It's "12 Years A Slave" for a reason.

While I personally enjoyed Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle more, I think Dallas Buyers Club should have won.

So then why did they show him at all with his family in the beginning and end?

Not great, but I sure did love that jailbreak scene with Quicksilver.

Just reserved a seat a Grauman's Chinese to see Interstellar in 70mm IMAX. Thirteenth row, dead center.

I am expecting a audio/visual feast and hoping the narrative doesn't blow it

Earlier this week I went to the new Korean theatre in LA; CGV and saw the Korean epic sea battle movie Admiral: Roaring Currents

trailer

It was notable for two things: one of the most evil antagonists since Hans Gruber and perhaps the greatest sea battle ever out to film. Its been a long time since I've seen Master and Commander, but I think this tops it.

Sadly, the other characters and their development and the sappy, sentimental constructs really kept this movie from achieving the status its battle scenes warrant.

Still worth seeing on the big screen if you can find it, just for the spectacle.

3.9/5 stars, strictly on the f/x

Boyhood

Gotta say, for as cool as the idea and process of the film is/was, the film certainly didn't blow me away like I expected it to given its universal praise. Definitely a cool experience and all, but the film doesn't have that much to say imo. Linklater has written better scripts and directed better movies as far as I'm concerned. I'd still recommend a viewing, but I'd try to keep expectations in check.

expectations can definitely kill a movie. With the Tomatometer blowing up for Boyhood I can see you getting over-hyped.

Boyhood is universally loved, but few the critics were "in love" with it, they just liked/recomended It has no flash or pomp and should not be entered into with great expectations. Its a typical Linlater film that grows on you much more than it ever wows you. Try it again in a few months and I bet you like it better.

Django Unchained

I can't count how many times I tried to get through this movie. Every time I'd grab it from Redbox (twice) I would get 10 minutes into it and fall asleep.

Then it came out on Netflix and I figured I'd get through it. It took almost an entire week - of watching it 30 minutes at a time. And it wasn't an awful movie, it just, i don't know....paced poorly? Or maybe just because it was like what? A five hour movie?

Christopher Waltz is spectacular. I'd watch him stand still and think he's a genius.

Jamie Foxx was really good.

Sam Jackson - IMHO was great!

Not a fan of Leo in this - but meh....whatever.

I don't have a specific dislike for QT, there are somethings he does in his movies I absolutely love, (the music in his movies is cool) - what I didn't like in this movie was the blood "splashes" in the second to last final gun battle. I'm not someone who has an issue with too much blood or gore in a movie. But that scene - with the literal splashes of blood was so over the top and unnecessary, it almost ruined the entire movie for me.

Overall....I liked it. I would have loved it 30 minutes shorter and less of the ridiculous blood.

very interested to see people's thoughts on interstellar. couple things I heard was that it looked great but Nolan doesn't excell at emotions in his movies. I also didn't know that Spielberg was set to direct this first.

eta: also I read that nolan made the mix and settings so specific that it is quite possible to have a subpar experience due to deafening levels/not hearing dialogue, etc. can't remember if that was specifically for a certain one of the 12 ways to see the movie.

Just got back from Interstellar.

Loved it.

Much heavier on the human drama aspect (which I liked a lot), and didn't get too bogged down on the scientific details.

Cinematography was awesome and beautiful.

8.5/10 for me.

Frank

Jon, a young wanna-be musician, discovers he's bitten off more than he can chew when he joins an eccentric pop band led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank.
One of the strangest movies I've seen and ends up having nothing to do with what you think it's about at the beginning.

If you like straight forward movies that make sense then don't watch it.

How To Train Your Dragon 2:

Damn good movie. Not quite to the level of the first - I think they missed slightly on some of the things the first one did so well, mainly the final battle and explaining how the dragons work (ie, how was the baddie able to control the dragons, etc..). Small beef though because this one expands the world in great ways, improved the animation, and upped the stakes nicely. Probably still one of the better animated movies to come out in the last few years. 8/10

Happy Christmas:

Decent movie by the team that did Drinking Buddies. As usual Anna Kendrick is great, but I think the supporting cast is weaker, so I didn't enjoy this one as much as Drinking Buddies. Worth a look for those who liked DB or those looking for a decent indie movie. 6/10

Zodiac:

Got behind doing other stuff the other day, so didn't get to Nightcrawler on time. Instead, that night I revisited this one for a Jake fix. The more I watch this movie the more I love it. I think this has to be one of Fincher's best movies - gun to my head, I would put it #2 of his behind Fight Club. 9/10

This out on dvd, or did you catch it in the theater?

Hunger Games - Catching Fire

Had to pull an all-nighter tonight and watched this...it kept me entertained and despite some occasionally painful twilight-esque dialogue i liked it :bag:

Watched a couple blockbusters from this year. Had similar thoughts about them, but completely different reactions to the movies.

Amazing Spider-Man 2:

Mostly brutal to watch. I did think there was a couple decent scenes, but mostly these were brief and quiet interactions between characters - Peter and Gwen, Peter and his aunt, etc.. As soon as they get to the bad guys, it turns to ####. Electro was just terrible, CG looked terrible, it was just a mess. I thought this was Joel Schumacher Batman bad and would tell most to stay away. 3/10.

Godzilla:

This was a surprise to me. I ended up having a blast with this one. It was mostly the opposite of Spidey. I thought most of the characters were bland, but really liked what they did with the monsters and the CG. This is what I wanted out of Pacific Rim. Yes, it was dumb, and we have to endure a completely bland main guy, but I thought Edwards did a great job with the scale of monsters and showing us how little we could do about what was going on. Did a great job of having humans in the scenes so we get an idea of how big they are and the destruction they are creating. Enough nods to the old ones, had a slight Speilberg edge to it, but it really could have used some more characters that we like more - Cranston and Olsen were great, but not in it enough. The guy from Kick-### was completely boring to be around, and despite the chaos going on around him, seems to have 0 emotion. Still definitely worth a watch. 7/10
Yes to all of this.
Agreed on Spidey, which really is a shame with him being one of my favorite characters growing up.

Saw Godzilla last night, none of my sons had any interest in seeing it, my 11 year old hung out with me with it on but was playing Mario Kart 8 on his wii U handheld throughout the movie. Really disappointed in LT Ford's character, Johnson's acting was weak but that was more the writing than his fault. The scene where he tells his son he'll be there in the morning just to immediately leave was brutal. The ending was sloppy. Disagree with your statement about Cranston and Olsen being great but they were better than most of the cast. We shouldn't expect much from the kid actors in these things but this one was especially bad. Without giving too much of the plot away, the sub-plot involving the bomb was stupid. Still, due to the imagery it gets 3/5 stars. Glad to have seen it, enjoyed it, but won't bother to re-watch.

I liked both movies but you really have to suffer from some painful dialogue.

Not that I disagree with your take, but was curious - what would have been your Best Picture of last year?
I also agree with Jamny though for different reasons.

My problem with 12 Years was that the north was nirvana and there was not one shred of decency in the south. In fact, characters only seemed to exist to inflict as much cruelty as possible on the poor slaves.

Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyer'sClub, Philomena and Nebraska were all better IMO. If I have to pick one, Ill go with Captain Phillips.

The point of the movie was to show how slavery degraded everyone in the South, not just the slaves. It wasn't North vs. South or black vs. white but about the evils of slavery.

That's fine, but as a film, it felt very exaggerated and one sided.

I guess I just chalked that up to being based on his memoir. Assumed that he didn't have a very balanced take on what was going on around him.

I agree. After watching this twice I actually purchased it for my library the third time I watched it because it just gets better every time I watch it. Sort of "True Detective'esque" long before the HBO series came along.

Disagree. its fun, inventive take on shoestring horror film making.

Solid 2.5, maybe 3.25 / 5 stars

agreed. Glad someone tested it out, but this was not going into my watch list without a few glowing reviews.

Wasnt as funny as I thought it was going to be, but was still pretty funny and worth a "watch it once for laughs then forget it ever existed".

Wow. Interstellar was interesting. I don't think it was a complete success. But it had two things going for it: the space photography was stunning, and the movie does aim very high with the plots and concepts. It's funny: the movie deals with some very complex physics. But it felt like the script tried to dumb it down a little too much at times.

Still, highly recommended, and a must-see on the big screen.
