Okay, had this one fired up from Netflix and was waiting for a nice Saturday afternoon to check it out. I was quite looking forward to it. Put it in, pushed play, and watched. When the movie ended, my wife said it was the absolute worst movie she's ever seen. Well, that's a bit strong. I am still thinking about my opinion on it. It was nothing like I expected. I was pretty disappointed too....but there was something about it that after the movie was over lingered with me. I'm going to pass on grading this one...because to me I was probably expecting a whole lot more than I got, but I'm not going to dismiss it as terrible. There were some aspects of the movie I liked a lot. Others, well, did not like at all. I have a hard time placing this movie as an all-time classic of 5 star movie. It was interesting.

I liked this movie a lot. Good story, good pace, nice storytelling. It was pretty long, but it flew through. Not a movie without flaws.....but overall, very well done. I'd rate it 8/10.
I re-watched American Pyscho this weekend too. I liked it the first time, my wife detested it. I liked it even more the second time. I don't know what it is about this movie, but I really do enjoy Bale's performance in it. I know they left out quite a bit from the book....but the movie is enough to give you a feel for it. I'm going to watch it again the next time I have nothing better to do. I think it's worth at least one viewing.
And, one more from a number of years ago....I re-watched Once Were Warriors. This movie is tough to get through, and even tougher when you're married with children. The first time I watched it, I was like, meh. Okay, I didn't use that word, but I'm pretty sure I turned it off half-way and wasn't all that interested. This time around I watched the whole thing and it's pretty gut wrenching stuff. I think it's a pretty solid film, with very good acting and characters you care about. I'd rate it a 7/10

Dexter - Season One - I know there is a thread somewhere about this, but thought I would post here instead. Watched all 12 episodes over Friday, Saturday and tonight. My wife and I both really enjoyed this. Brilliantly simple idea of a serial killer working for a forensics lab. I will say that the acting by most of the supporting actors really lacked, but the main character and the concept more than made up for it. Plenty of humor, and the twists at the end were nice. A bit too much blood for my wife, and not enough T&A for me, but overall an A+.

Ok- not a vid, but we finally saw the latest Harry Potter movie in the theater (hello, babysitter!... who knew lives could be reclaimed in such a simple way?).
I liked it just fine and we got to wondering about whether there are any other serial/sequel movie series that get progressively better the way HP has? I couldn't think of any (and Godfather 1 and 2 count, IMO)... I guess LOR, although I think I preferred the first in that series.

Just saw it last night... pretty stunning movie. The overall story was interesting, but a bit cliched in the "hero journey" aspect. That said- that's my only- and minor- issue with the movie. Visually amazing (watch the interview with the really young, astonishingly smart, director in the special features), incredibly acted, well written, beautifully scored and designed. Operating on a variety of different levels all the time, and is so... dunno... precise/rigorous (?) in it's direction. A different kind of movie than some of my other favorites this year (Little Children, Pans Lab), but very worth watching. Very.

To each their own. I've read plenty of decent science fiction that had far more ridiculous contraptions. If a movie needs to use a MacGuffin* to advance an interesting story, I guess I don't care.Kinda like the burrowing machine in The Core. Sure it's ludicrous, but necessary if we're to have a story at all. And I really liked that ridiculous little movie.*
From the link: Because a MacGuffin is, by definition, basically unimportant to the story, its use can challenge the audience's suspension of disbelief. Well-done works will compensate for this with a good story, interesting characters, talented acting/writing, and so on. In the case of an ambiguous MacGuffin, audiences can imagine what it is or ignore it and just go along with the story.

I love sci-fi & fantasy movies.
But at least have something somewhat plausible. One of my favorite movies is Armageddon. I liked the Core just fine. Sure, the machine they took down there was illogical, but the basic premise was interesting...and they dealt with other stuff. Deja Vu didn't deal with any of the impossibilities of their seriously flawed base. Maybe it would have helped if it hyped itself as a sci-fi movie instead of an action movie.

Just saw Hotel Rwanda. Obviously a very powerful movie and a heavy subject, but I was quite disappointed with this. Cheadle was very good, but his supporting cast (Nick Nolte?!?) was pretty sub-par. It was a struggle to finish this movie.
I also wonder if they intentionally structured this movie to portray Paul Rusesabagina as a modern day Oskar Schindler. By that I mean, yes, there are similarities, but it seemed they wanted to hit you over the head with it.
Probably 6/10 tops for me.

I guess it was lowered expectations after all the hype. I didn't expect much and found myself enjoying it all the way through. I recorded it and fast forwarded through a few scenes so that helped. Only a couple of slow parts.Watch for the famous line by Sam Jackson, which was poorly added after the fact.

This was a Hollywood movie that could have been good, but again in this day in age was not. I swear that they edited this POS together in 15 minutes or completely changed the script because toward the end of the movie this was a D effort in tying things together. It was so far fetched towards the end that I nearly turned it off. Not that I was looking for it to be "based on true story" but seriously this movie just sucked after the first 30 minutes or so and the character development, the background, and really the plot was in pieces at the 90 minute mark of a two hour film. I think Mark Wahlberg must have thought the script looked better than what the movie ended up being presented as. I can't remember a more shoddy editing job in a feature film that was supposed to be decent.

And in totally unrelated news, I watched the documentary "DiG" last night (just upgraded to digital cable and love On Demand). Pretty interesting tale of the parallel rise and sputter of two friendly bands from the mid-90's.

Saw two documentaries recently.
Spellbound - After reading about it in this thread, thought I'd give it a look. Fascinating movie. There are so many different types of kids doing the national spelling bee and it was very interesting to see the very diverse backgrounds of just a few of the participants. You gotta feel for some of those kids. One of the moms said it best in that the NSB was the one place where genius kids could get together and everyone was comfortable with everyone. Excellent movie.
Control Room - Another very good documentary about Al-Jazeera and a behind the scenes look at its coverage of the invasion of Iraq. After watching it, I now am more strongly of the belief that to really win a war these days, you have to play the media propoganda card correctly, and doing so in an underhanded fashion is often very effective at garnering the needed support for your cause. Got me thinking that the public really knows a very small amount of what is really going on in Iraq and that you can't believe everything you see in the media. Every side has its agenda, and we all know that, but this movie really showed that point in very clear detail. A great "makes you think" documentary, I'd highly recommend it if you have any interest in the Iraq war at all (and even if you don't, it is still very well done).

Blades Of Glory - Typical Will Ferrell and I laughed the whole way through. The wife and I got about 10 mins in and decided we would end up owning this one. Jon Heder is headed really fast to being a one-dimensional character, but it worked well here.
High Roller-The Stu Unger Story - I think a must see for any poker fans and esp fans of the people who play poker. Told a tragic but great story. Michael Imperioli was great in the title role. Would have liked to have seen more poker action, but that is just me.
Empire Records - One of my favorite movies from college, I picked it up off the cheap rack to give a view and see "if it still stands up today." I was pleasantly surprised that it did. Love the music in it, great overall cast and Renee Zellweger has never looked as hot as she did in this movie. The scene where she is singing on the roof, and the scene where she is wearing only an apron brought back good memories. Makes me yearn for the days of the mid 90's when it was all about the short skirt/sweater combo around campus.
Clerks 2 - As a huge Kevin Smith fan, I saw this opening night at the theater and then plopped down my cash to buy it when it came out on DVD. I realized that I bought it months ago and it was still in the wrapper. And I know I have watched Chasing Amy many times, Dogma twice and Clerks once since owning it. So I opened it up and watched it again. This movie will end up just ahead of Jersey Girl in the KSmith film listing. In the theater it seemed so funny and over the top, but at home you just realize that the two main characters (esp Dante) are played by guys that just are not good actors. Smith can write the most perfect script, but if they can't execute, it is worthless. Some golden moments with Mewes and Smith and Jay and Silent Bob, and Rosario Dawson shaking her cans while dancing makes up for the bad acting....a little.
