Transformers The Movie

Meh.

Talk about a mix of contradictions. The effects were pretty cool, but the detail was hard to follow as the scenes were too fast. The story was flimsy. Dialog clumsy, although strangely the acting as a whole wasn't half bad. Lots of overt adult violence, but comedy was geared for the preteen.

Might have been worth catching on the big screen for the effects, but a terrible rental.
That is about as accurate a description of that movie as you can get.
I can't think of one reason to see this movie.
It's not awful. Just not great.
Isn't that the title of Michael Bay's autobiography?

No Country For Old Men

Awesome film. Coen fans will not be dissapointed. Javier Bardem could be the meanest, scariest villain ever. His character makes The Terminator seem like My Little Pony. Brolin is very good and Tommy Lee Jones was awesome.

I will warn you that the last 25 minutes are very unusual. Anyone that expects traditional Hollywood devices probably isn't familiar with the Coens' works. I loved it, and will probably need to see it two or three more times to truly appreciate it.

I know it wasn't a rental, but I still like to post here
Just watched Miller's Crossing for about the thirtieth time this weekend. What a masterpiece. Stil trying to find time for NCFOM.

Just watched Miller's Crossing for about the thirtieth time this weekend. What a masterpiece. Stil trying to find time for NCFOM.
Someone saw fit to argue with me earlier when I made this point, but I think Miller's is one of the most beautifully-filmed movies ever made. Every shot is a masterpiece. And it's astounding how few people have seen that movie.

"jarhead" - meh. i didn't especially like or empathize with gyllenahall's character. as a movie, it was trying waaaay too hard. "the piano" - watched this over the weekend for the first time since i saw it in the theater years ago. i forgot how much i really liked this movie. it's a gorgeous film to look at. the acting - hunter, in particular - was really quite good. the story and script - written by the very smart jane campion - just make it a pleasure.
And by "pleasure", you mean Harvey Keitel's schvantz.
actually, holly hunter's frontal nudity reminded me that she used to be quite a dish. cute lil tush on her...

I haven't seen this since the first time in the theater. I honestly don't remember it being that great- but it could've come out during the 5 or 6 years wrapping grad-school and my first few years as a professional where I didn't sleep and was perpetually crabby.

the wife and i watched him in "mouth to mouth" over the weekend. it was a very fine farce in that modern euro film tradition. it owes a very clear and obvious debt to pedro almodovar.

The dialog is razor, and I mean RAZOR, sharp and like jdoggydogg said, it's beautifully shot. And the performances are all first rate. John Turturro should have gotten a nomination for his role.

Tom Reagan: Think about what protecting Bernie gets us. Think about what offending Caspar loses us.

Leo O'Bannion: Oh, come on, Tommy. You know I don't like to think.

Tom Reagan: Yeah. Well, think about whether you should start.

Sweet. I am totally unfamiliar with Bardem's acting. But watching him on Charlie Rose with the Coens, he was pretty much the exact opposite of his character in Old Men. So based on that alone, this guy must be a pretty solid actor.

you don't need to sell me on this film. i think it's the best drama from the Coen canon. it's certainly their most well rounded film. i dearly love Albert Finney in this film. he and joe polito steal this movie for me.

Turturro is just outstanding in that role. And Gabriel Byrne does the perfect 40s noir protagonist.

Tom Reagan: [on finding someone sitting in the dark in his apartment] Hello Bernie. Bernie: Hello Tom. What's the rumpus? How'd you know it was me?

Tom Reagan: You're the only one I know who'd knock and then break in.

Bernie: Your other friends wouldn't break in, huh?

Tom Reagan: My other friends want to kill me so they wouldn't've knocked.

Every exchange of dialog is just RICH. I love it.

:subscribe: Going on vacation in a couple days- will hit up BB for it... hoping it's a week long rental.

Just saw The Pursuit of Happyness - on HBO quality flick

Rented - Shooter with Marc Walhberg - about what I expected.

NExt rental is Reign Over Me I think.

For your Consideration... I love Christopher Guest movies, although Mighty Wind and this one have just about tapped out the genre. But I still love seeing that cast do what they do- this one just kind of petered out without enough goofiness.

Yeah, this one just didn't do it for me...Very meh, although there were a couple of very funny parts

You can't throw the baby out with the bathwater because then all you have is a wet, critically injured baby.

Quick sidebar:After I watched the movie, I went to use the restroom. While I am standing at the urinal, my boot gets tapped from the stall next to me. Turns out it was my brother in law, but for a second there, I said, "Buh?!"

God bless Larry Craig :lmao:

Saw Fred Claus. Movie was fair. Elizabeth Banks gave me wood.
Why?
Heard Elizabeth Banks was in the movie. :goodposting:
I have to introduce you to a little thing called "The Internet." Full of beautiful women, and mostly free ;)
That is rich. If you had any idea how much time I spent on the "mostly" free sites you'd need to take a shower to rinse your self of the disgust you'd have for me.Wife said let's go to see a flick. I picked one with a hot chick in it. No more, no less.

Just started Netflix :behindthetimes:

Live Free or Die Hard - I liked it, 4 stars

Shrek the Third - saw it in the theater, still like it a lot, 5 stars

Surf's Up - ok, not great, but alright for what it is 2 stars

Ocean's Thirteen - love this series, but this was the worst of the 3. 3 stars

The Wild - too similar to Madagascar, didn't care for it, but son liked it. 2 stars

the movie sucked. but for you home theater nuts, the HD DVD looks and sounds absolutely phenomenal.

Mr. Brooks

A sufficient thriller that relies too much on coincidence. 7/10

Demi Moore is still attractive. William Hurt gives a good performance.
Saw this movie over the weekend and really liked it. Actually thought Dane Cook did a good job.
I thought Costner was very good in this movie. His reserve gave his character good depth and made him more believable IMO. Hurt was excellent as usual (does anyone play a better cold hearted ******* than him lately?). But I thought (and have thought for awhile) that Demi Moore is severely overrated. Dane Cook was actually a pleasant surprise. It's a solid flick- definitely a good rental.

Not a whole lot to report, but here's the latest Netflix batch:

Hot Rod - I wasn't expecting this to be great, and therefore I was not disappointed. Was it hilarious and laugh out loud funny? Not so much. Did I find parts amusing, and really really enjoy the allusion to The Whoopee Boys, a favorite movie from my childhood, that most people haven't heard of? Damn skippy. (3/5)

The Devil's Backbone - Really really good movie. Been in my queue forever. But it's got 500 movies in it, so it takes me a hot minute sometimes. (4/5)

Blue - Also, been in my queue forever, and I finally was able to get to watch. Before krista flames me for giving it a 4, let me say that I did think the movie was beautiful, and I enjoyed it very much. But, I do have a rodent phobia, and I could have done without the whole "family of mice" plotline. Ewwwww. (4/5)

I like The Devil's Backbone a lot, though not nearly as much as Pan's Labyrinth. Of the Red/Blue/White trilogy, Blue is my least favorite, so I'll cut you some slack. :pics: Haven't had time for movies lately so the only one I have to report on for the past couple of weeks is Tsotsi, the South African film that won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film a couple of years back. I was blown away by the performance of the lead character in this movie and was moved by the film as a whole, especially the last scenes. 4.5/5

Some movies I have seen in the past year that I really liked:

Pretty Pursuation - awesome movie with some good plot twists

Hot Fuzz - from the maker of Shaun of the Dead, very funny

The Godfather of Green Bay - worth it just to see the character that plays the Godfather's mullet, and to see him do the Marcarina

Hard Candy - a young girl reverses the game and gets revenge

The Dog Problem - I like Givioni Ribisi

Invincible - excellent for any football fan, especially any Eagles fans

Knocked Up - hilarous

Poolhall Junkies - Christopher Walken and the guy that played Sonny in A Bronx Tale (also a great movie)

Classics

Gone in 60 Seconds - a must if you love cars (original from the 70s is cool too)

The Big Lebowski - one of my favorites of all time

I think the point at which "Gone in 60 Seconds" is listed in this thread as a "classic" might be the time at which I need to retire from the thread.
